From a satanic serial killer to an iconic football broadcaster, Nicolas Cage really can do it all. Deadline reports that Nicolas Cage is set to play John Madden in a sports drama, which will be written and directed by David O. Russell. Probably safe to say that George Clooney won’t be part of the cast.
“Nicolas Cage, one of our greatest and most original actors, will portray the best of the American spirit of originality, fun, and determination in which anything is possible as beloved national legend John Madden,” said director David O. Russell in a statement. “Together with the ferocious style, focus, and inspired individualism of Al Davis, owner of the underdog Oakland Raiders, the feature will be about the joy, humanity and genius that was John Madden in a wildly inventive, cool world of the 1970s.“
John Madden was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 1969 to 1978 and led the team to eight playoff appearances, seven division titles, seven AFL/AFC Championship Game appearances, and the Raiders’ first Super Bowl title. After announcing his retirement due to medical issues and burnout, he became a commentator on NFL games for thirty years. He also lent his name, voice, and creative input to the John Madden Football series from Electronic Arts. The series has become one of the biggest video game franchises of all time and has released annual installments since 1990.
Nicolas Cage may not seem like the most obvious choice to play John Madden, but as I said at the top of this article, he really can do it all. The actor is currently in production on Spider-Noir, a live-action Spider-Man series starring Cage as an “aging and down on his luck private investigator in 1930s New York who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.” Cage can also be seen starring in Longlegs alongside Maika Monroe. The horror thriller from writer/director Osgood Perkins has been receiving rave reviews, with Cage’s performance in particular said to be something to behold. I have largely moved away from buying collector’s editions over the past decade, and so I was probably not going to buy Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s pseudo-special edition, called “Rook’s Coffer,” to begin with. If I don’t see something that I might actually use in the big box of collectibles offered alongside a game…

In April, Nintendo officially shut down the 3DS online servers. But some players didn’t log off and stuck around, keeping the servers going. However, after nearly four months, it seems just one person is left standing. They are now the last person still playing their 3DS online in 2024.

Merced played Anya Corazón in the movie, one of the three young women destined to become superheroes. While speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Merced said that the reaction to the film left a “sad taste” in her mouth.
“I’d say…I feel like every actor I know and admire has that one movie where it’s so camp. It’s so camp. The group chat was fun after. All the Tweets that would come out and the memes we would see made the group chat very fun,” Merced said. “But at the same time, it does [leave] a sad taste in my mouth because there were people that worked on it who worked really hard. Maybe this was their opportunity to have a big break and I can’t help but think about the people who put in the work. I’m lucky enough to have other opportunities right now.“
Merced continued, “That’s what I feel really blessed about but I do feel bad for the other people who put their all into this. There [were] so many cooks in the kitchen. Even though you might mean well, someone else might not understand the assignment.” Despite the crash and burn of Madame Web, Merced still has a “spot soft” in her heart for the movie. “Honestly, I love The Room. I love Flubber. I love Catwoman. Those are my favourites,” Merced said. “I’m a little proud of it in that sense. I’m really glad we had each other.“
Thankfully, Merced has a couple of very exciting projects on her slate. She joined the cast of The Last of Us season 2 as Dina, Ellie’s love interest, and will be playing Hawkgirl in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie. She also stars alongside Cailee Spaeny in Alien: Romulus, which hits theaters on August 16th. You can check out a review from our own Chris Bumbray right here.
Back in February, we heard that a thriller called Amber Alert, starring Hayden Panettiere of Heroes, Scream 4, and Scream VI and Tyler James Williams of Everybody Hates Chris,Abbott Elementary, and The Walking Dead had made its way through production and that Lionsgate had acquired the worldwide rights to the film. Now we know what Lionsgate is going to do with it. The company has announced that they’re releasing Amber Alert on VOD and in select theatres on September 27th, and today a trailer for the film has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.
Amber Alert was directed by Kerry Bellessa, who also wrote the screenplay with Joshua Oram. Bellessa’s previous credits include the 2022 horror film Immanence and a 2012 thriller that was also called Amber Alert… so apparently this is a reimagining of Bellessa’s previous film. The new take on Amber Alert will show us what happens when an ordinary ride share becomes a high-stakes game of cat and mouse. The story follows Jaq (Hayden Panettiere) who is eager to get to her first day at a new job, and her driver, Shane (Tyler James Williams), who is just trying to earn a little extra at his side hustle. An alert of a child abduction on their phones will change all that when they discover they are behind a car that matches the description of the kidnapper’s. Unable to let a possible child trafficker escape, they begin a pursuit that will put their own lives at risk.
The 2012 version of Amber Alert, also written by Bellessa and Oram, had the following synopsis: When a group of friends decides to follow a car they’ve seen posted on an Amber Alert, things start to go very wrong.
The new Amber Alert is being produced by Joseph Restaino and Tony Stopperan of Hungry Bull Productions, which is best known for bringing us Michael Sarnoski’s Pig, starring Nicolas Cage and Alex Wolff. Kerry Bellessa is also producing, alongside Summer Bellessa (who starred in the original film) for Bluefields Entertainment. Leal Naim is a producer on the project as well. The film was co-financed by Hungry Bull Productions and Three Point Capital. Panettiere and Williams serve as executive producers.
