JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray has made it clear that he’s a big fan of the 1994 sci-fi action film No Escape, so when he had the chance to speak with legendary producer Gale Anne Hurd recently, he couldn’t let the opportunity to talk to her about the movie go by – and as it turns out, by mentioning No Escape, he opened the door to also discussing how director Martin Campbell got the job to direct the James Bond film GoldenEye, the 1991 made-for-HBO horror noir Cast a Deadly Spell, and the possibility of a Cast a Deadly Spell TV series!
When Bumbray told Hurd that he’s a big fan of No Escape, she confirmed that she loves the movie as well and said, “It was actually my second collaboration with (director) Martin Campbell; the first one was an HBO movie called Cast a Deadly Spell. … I’ve just worked with some amazing people. But Martin is a brilliant, and anyway, (No Escape) was financed independently by a company called Savoy that promptly went out of business. And not only were they the financier, they were the distributor. So we didn’t get the theaters. We didn’t get the exposure. We had no marketing money. And I think when a film stumbles at the box office and rights were in tied up in litigation because of bankruptcy for a long time, it’s hard to gain traction because no one had an opportunity to see it. But it was an absolute blast to make that in Australia. And, you know, an interesting tidbit. One of the people who saw the film was John Calley, the amazing late John Calley. He called me up and he said, ‘We’re looking for a new director for the Bond series, for GoldenEye. What do you think of Martin Campbell? Because I saw your movie and I love it and how much did it cost?’ And I said, ‘Almost nothing.’ And that’s how he hired Martin Campbell.” Campbell went on to direct not only the first Pierce Brosnan Bond film, GoldenEye, but also the first Daniel Craig Bond film, Casino Royale.
Circling back to Cast a Deadly Spell, Bumbray mentioned that it’s a property that should be revived – and Hurd agreed. In fact, she said, “We’ve pitched. We’ve pitched a number of times, and now that HBO’s Max, who knows? It’s to the credit of Joseph Dougherty, who was the writer, who created the character. And given, you know, a sort of noir L.A. with mythical L.A. with all kinds of, vampires and werewolves and things like that. It’s just an incredibly fun premise that I think would actually make a great TV series.” Bumbray and Hurd also agreed that, if there were to be a new addition to the Cast a Deadly Spell franchise, Jeffrey Dean Morgan would be a great choice for the lead character, hard-boiled detective Harry Philip Lovecraft.
Directed by Campbell from a script by Dougherty, Cast a Deadly Spell starred Fred Ward as Lovecraft and had the following synopsis: In a 1940s Los Angeles from another dimension, the entire population has supernatural abilities, save for sleuth Harry Philip Lovecraft. The strange but affluent Amos Hacksaw trusts Lovecraft because of his distaste for magic, and he recruits the private eye to track down an ancient text. Harry’s seemingly straightforward task becomes complicated when he realizes that the object of his mission contains curses that Hacksaw hopes to use for world domination.
A sequel called Witch Hunt followed in 1994, with Dennis Hopper taking over the role of Lovecraft and Paul Schrader directing from a Dougherty script. That one had this synopsis: In 1950s, in a fictional universe where magic, witchcraft and monsters exist in the world, Private detective H. Phillip Lovecraft investigates a murder connecting an actress and a senator.

As family, friends, and fans continue to mourn the sudden loss of Friends star Matthew Perry after the actor’s accidental drug overdose, a break in the ongoing case has led to the arrest of one suspect, with other arrests expected to follow.
“This is a very difficult case to piece together,” a senior law enforcement source told Deadline Thursday. “What has happened today and will be announced…there will be likely be more arrests later.” After a Department of Justice news conference in Los Angeles, more details should follow this afternoon.
Specifics about Perry’s untimely passing have plagued concerned individuals since the night in question. On October 28, 2023, Perry was found in a hot tub at his home in Los Angeles. Upon further inspection, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office declared that Perry had passed away from the “acute effects of ketamine.” After a series of investigative tests, the autopsy report also cited drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine – a drug used to combat opioid use.
Before his passing, Perry became quite vocal about his efforts to remain sober and get his career back on an even path. He even had an idea to make a Mattman movie with Adam McKay. The fact remains that Perry was something of a Batman obsessive. He spent $20 million on a 10,000-square-foot mansion to house a “bat cave” filled with Dark Knight memorabilia. Perry also titled the final chapter in his addiction memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, “Batman.” He even devised a nickname for himself as an homage to Bats, “Mattman” – or Matman, as he spells it in the book. Plotting a comeback into the limelight, Perry brought his ideas for a Mattman film project to Don’t Look Up filmmaker Adam McKay, who cast the actor as a smarmy cable news anchor in the apocalyptic comedy starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, and Jonah Hill. Ultimately, Perry’s role fell to the cutting room floor, but only after he approached McKay about his Mattman fantasy.
“On October 28, 2023, the Los Angeles Police Department responded to the residence of actor Matthew Perry to conduct a death investigation. On October 29, 2023, an autopsy of Mr. Perry was performed by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. On December 15, 2023, the results of the autopsy indicated that Mr. Perry died from the “acute effects of ketamine.” Based on the Medical Examiner’s findings, the Los Angeles Police Department, with the assistance of the Drug Enforcement Administration and the United States Postal Inspection Service, has continued its investigation into the circumstances of Mr. Perry’s death.“
We’ll keep our eyes peeled for more details as authorities continue to investigate the mysterious circumstances surrounding the beloved actor’s death.

Yesterday, we learned that the animated film Transformers One, which takes place on the Autobots and Decepticon’s home planet of Cybertron and is set to reach theatres on September 20th, has earned a PG rating (for sci-fi violence and animated action throughout, and language) from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. Now a featurette has arrived online to give us a look at the voice cast and hear what they had to say about the project, and you can check it out in the embed above!
Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley directed the film from a screenplay that was crafted by Ant-Man co-writers Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari, along with Eric Pearson, whose credits include Thor: Ragnarok and Godzilla vs. Kong. The animated movie tells the “long-awaited origin story of how the most iconic characters in the Transformers universe, Orion Pax and D-16, went from brothers-in-arms to become sworn enemies, Optimus Prime and Megatron.”
Chris Hemsworth (Avengers: Endgame) and Brian Tyree Henry (Eternals) are providing the voices of Optimus Prime and Megatron, respectively, and they’re joined in the voice cast by Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) as Elita, Keegan-Michael Key (The Predator) as Bumblebee, Jon Hamm (Mad Men) as Sentinel Prime, Steve Buscemi (Reservoir Dogs) as Starscream, and Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix) as Alpha Trion. The featurette promotes the involvement of all of them.
Hemsworth recently explained that he was drawn to Transformers One because it’s an origin story. “It isn’t a remake; it’s not a reimagining. It shows the early years of these characters, whom we only knew later in their lives. This film delves into friendships and relationships you have with people when you’re vulnerable and afraid. It talks about what bravery really means and how good and evil aren’t as simplistic as they might first appear. We make mistakes, and we learn from them. But ultimately, we are defined by the decisions that we make.“
The film was produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Tom DeSanto, Don Murphy, Michael Bay, Mark Vahradian, and Aaron Dem. Executive producers include Steven Spielberg, Zev Foreman, Olivier Dumont, Bradley J. Fischer, B.J. Farmer, and Matt Quigg.

Festival Director Lisa Dreyer had this to say: “The Fantastic Fest team is absolutely elated about this year’s festival. We can’t wait to share the very best new films from around the world and enjoy our sensational events together this September. We’re also honored to be joined by a number of notable guests, and welcome our Fantastic Fest family back to Austin to celebrate cinema, whether it’s your 1st time or 19th!“
The world premiere of director James Ashcroft’s The Rule of Jenny Pen aims to open Fantastic Fest 2024 with a bang. The film stars Geoffrey Rush as a judge who finds himself in a nursing home after an unexpected health scare, where he encounters a bizarre resident (played by John Lithgow) hellbent on terrorizing the patients. As the stakes escalate, Rush and Lithgow battle it out in epic fashion, in this unbelievably entertaining and disturbing thriller.
The opening night gala will include a screening of Never Let Go, with Aja and Berry in attendance. As an evil takes over the world beyond their front doorstep, the only protection for a mother and her twin sons is their house and their family’s protective bond. Needing to stay connected at all times – even tethering themselves with ropes – they cling to one another, urging each other to never let go. But when one of the boys questions if the evil is real, the ties that bind them together are severed, triggering a terrifying fight for survival. Never Let Go will keep you on the edge of your seat. The opening night is packed, as it will also feature the world premiere of the Christmas-set Terrifier 3, in which the infamous Art the Clown spreads holiday fear.
As the festival goes on, there will be a special screening of the Netflix documentary Will & Harper, with Will Ferrell, Harper Steele, and director Josh Greenbaum in attendance. That event will be livestreamed to select Alamo Drafthouses nationwide. Will & Harper follows the two friends on a road trip across the USA, so Ferrell can connect more deeply with his longtime collaborator Steele after her recent transition, and is a heartwarming, humorous, and extremely timely and important watch. Director Nacho Vigalondo will also be at the festival to receive a special award for his contributions to genre film, from Timecrimes to Colossal. His latest movie is the “intensely personal sci-fi romance” Daniela Forever, which will be screening at the festival, followed by a Q&A with Vigalondo.
The closing night film is the world premiere of director Brandon Espy’s Hulu film Mr. Crocket, which is based on his short. Starring Elvis Nolasco as a diabolical children’s TV show host and Jerrika Hinton as a mother who will stop at nothing to protect her son, Mr. Crocket is an entertaining and imaginative slasher with a deep emotional core at the center of the story.
