Terrifier 3

The eighteenth edition of the genre festival Fantastic Fest is set to be held at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, Texas from September 19th – 26th (badges are available now at FantasticFest.com), and this year the festival is going to feature 28 World Premieres, 23 International and North American Premieres, and 15 U.S. Premieres that are “guaranteed to delight and surprise you, complemented by jaw-dropping events and spectacular special guests.” Among the films in the lineup, which you can look over below, are the Alexandre Aja / Halle Berry horror film Never Let Go, the supernatural slasher sequel Terrifier 3, the Rosemary’s Baby prequel Apartment 7A, and much more.

Festival Director Lisa Dreyer had this to say: “The Fantastic Fest team is absolutely elated about this year’s festival. We can’t wait to share the very best new films from around the world and enjoy our sensational events together this September. We’re also honored to be joined by a number of notable guests, and welcome our Fantastic Fest family back to Austin to celebrate cinema, whether it’s your 1st time or 19th!

The world premiere of director James Ashcroft’s The Rule of Jenny Pen aims to open Fantastic Fest 2024 with a bang. The film stars Geoffrey Rush as a judge who finds himself in a nursing home after an unexpected health scare, where he encounters a bizarre resident (played by John Lithgow) hellbent on terrorizing the patients. As the stakes escalate, Rush and Lithgow battle it out in epic fashion, in this unbelievably entertaining and disturbing thriller.

Never Let Go

The opening night gala will include a screening of Never Let Go, with Aja and Berry in attendance. As an evil takes over the world beyond their front doorstep, the only protection for a mother and her twin sons is their house and their family’s protective bond. Needing to stay connected at all times – even tethering themselves with ropes – they cling to one another, urging each other to never let go. But when one of the boys questions if the evil is real, the ties that bind them together are severed, triggering a terrifying fight for survival. Never Let Go will keep you on the edge of your seat.  The opening night is packed, as it will also feature the world premiere of the Christmas-set Terrifier 3, in which the infamous Art the Clown spreads holiday fear.

As the festival goes on, there will be a special screening of the Netflix documentary Will & Harper, with Will Ferrell, Harper Steele, and director Josh Greenbaum in attendance. That event will be livestreamed to select Alamo Drafthouses nationwide. Will & Harper follows the two friends on a road trip across the USA, so Ferrell can connect more deeply with his longtime collaborator Steele after her recent transition, and is a heartwarming, humorous, and extremely timely and important watch. Director Nacho Vigalondo will also be at the festival to receive a special award for his contributions to genre film, from Timecrimes to Colossal. His latest movie is the “intensely personal sci-fi romance” Daniela Forever, which will be screening at the festival, followed by a Q&A with Vigalondo.

The closing night film is the world premiere of director Brandon Espy’s Hulu film Mr. Crocket, which is based on his short. Starring Elvis Nolasco as a diabolical children’s TV show host and Jerrika Hinton as a mother who will stop at nothing to protect her son, Mr. Crocket is an entertaining and imaginative slasher with a deep emotional core at the center of the story.

The wait to reconnect with Dwight ‘The General’ Manfredi (Sylvester Stallone) is almost over as Paramount+ debuts the Tulsa King Season 2 trailer, teasing a territorial dispute that could send shockwaves throughout Oklahoma. Alongside today’s intense trailer, Paramount+ announced that Grammy-nominated country star Jell Roll will cameo in the upcoming season. The new preview features a sneak peek at Jelly Roll’s unreleased song “Get By” from his upcoming sophomore album. Tulsa King Season 2 gets rough on Sunday, September 15, in the U.S. and internationally.

Here’s the official synopsis for Tulsa King Season 2 courtesy of Paramount+:

In season two, Dwight (Stallone) and his crew continue to build up and defend their growing empire in Tulsa, but just as they get their bearings, they realize that they’re not the only ones who want to stake their claim. With looming threats from the Kansas City mob and a very powerful local businessman, Dwight struggles to keep his family and crew safe while keeping track of all his affairs. Plus, he still has unfinished business back in New York.

Martin Starr, Jay Will, Max Casella, Vincent Piazza, Tatiana Zappardino, Annabella Sciorra, Domenick Lombardozzi, Andrea Savage, Garrett Hedlund, and Dana Delany star alongside Stallone as primary characters. Neil McDonough plays the powerful and highly territorial businessman Cal Thresher, and Frank Grillo plays Bill Bevilaqua, a Kansas City mobster interested in Tulsa.

Tulsa King is part of Taylor Sheridan’s growing slate on Paramount+, which includes 1883, Mayor of Kingstown, Lawmen: Bass Reeves, the upcoming Landman, and the forthcoming second seasons of Lioness and 1923.

In Paramount’s Tulsa King Season 2 trailer, Stallone’s Dwight Manfredi finds his progress in Tulsa hindered after exiting prison. Determined to get the band back together, Manfredi assembles his crew to rebuild their hold on Tulsa and establish businesses that could find them running things from a legitimately. Looking to cramp The General’s style and claim the territory for themselves are Cal Thresher (McDonough) and Bill Bevilaqua (Grillo), who’d instead rearrange Manfredi’s face than share any of the spoils with their competition.

Borderlands

Cate Blanchett stands as one of the greatest actresses of her generation, if not ever. And she is undoubtedly one of the most committed working today. This is something that Jamie Lee Curtis saw firsthand while making Borderlands with Blanchett, observing that she was practicing her Lydia Tár technique in between takes.

As Curtis – whose Everything Everywhere All at Once co-star Michelle Yeoh beat out Cate Blanchett for Best Actress – remembered, she would see Blanchett practicing conducting while in full Lilith get-up, which only added to the confusion. “I was like, ‘What are you doing?’ She said, ‘Oh, I have this job I’m going to next.’ She went straight to Berlin from Budapest. That’s how long ago we made this movie,” referring to the movie beginning filming in April 2021, four months before cameras on the Todd Field film rolled.

Blanchett admitted that the whole situation may have been strange to the Borderlands cast and crew. “Perhaps if you’re doing two things that were vaguely similar, it might be a little bit confusing, but you couldn’t get two more diametrically opposed projects than Borderlands and Tár.” She added, “When you’re doing something as physical as [Borderlands], you can only go up and down on a harness so many times before they have to turn the set around. There’d often be an hour where I had the time to sit down and look at the score. I always thought I was going to do needlepoint or knitting, but no.”

Cate Blanchett’s performance in Tár might rightly be considered one of the best of the century so far. That may sound like hyperbole, but Blanchett presents this character and the themes in a way that is simply unmatched, bringing forth the complexities of Todd Field’s screenplay with both composure and force. For more on our love of both Blanchett’s performance and the film itself, check out our 10/10 review. As for Borderlands…well… not so much.

Based on the popular first-person shooting series, Borderlands is directed by Eli Roth and also stars Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Edgar Ramirez, and Ariana Greenblatt.

Sometimes, I feel the need for speed. Recently, we at JoBlo had the chance to satisfy that need. I had a groovy time for the upcoming Netflix action comedy The Union. It started with training. During the experience, journalists and influencers took on a little CIA training. After all, it makes sense for the new film. It tells the story of Mark Wahlberg’s Mike, a regular Joe thrust into a world of spies and danger. So, what better way to prepare for the buddy comedy? How often do you get to race around a track in a go-kart or shoot paintball for work? Well, if you get that chance, I highly recommend taking it.

While in training, we had evasive driving and paintball target practice (which I sucked at). After the adventure, I took part in the feature film The Union. And yes, Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg had terrific chemistry together. Directed by Julian Farino, the charming comedy will be available for viewing this coming Friday. And if you are a Wahlberg or Berry fan, their latest adventure is a must-watch. You also have a great supporting cast that includes J.K. Simmons, Mike Colter, Jackie Earle Haley, and more.

Recently, I sat down with Mark Wahlberg to talk about The Union. I’ve spoken with Mr. Wahlberg a few times in the past. And he is seemingly excited about this latest project. Mark discussed playing a regular Joe (JoBlo) and working with Halle Berry. What I especially appreciated about the conversation was how down to Earth he was. It’s been a while since we last spoke. Yet you always get a sense when someone is truly happy to discuss their latest project. And you don’t need to be a CIA agent to get the he has a lot of love for this one.

Check out The Union this Friday on Netflix!
