Barbara Crampton

Writers/directors Brea Grant (Torn Hearts) and Ed Dougherty (co-writer of Paint It Black) have wrapped production on their four-part horror anthology Grind, Deadline reports, adding that filming took place in the Los Angeles area. Grant got her start as an actress, working on such projects as Friday Night Lights, Midnight Movie, Heroes, Dexter, Rob Zombie’s Halloween II, and Ice Road Terror. She made her feature directorial debut with the 2013 film Best Friends Forever, and has since directed Torn Hearts, 12 Hour Shift, and episodes of Pandora, among other things. Doughterty has previously directed multiple short films and music videos.

The cast of Grind includes genre icon Barbara Crampton (Jakob’s Wife, pictured above), James Paxton (Twisters), Christopher Marquette (Freddy vs. Jason), James Urbaniak (Oppenheimer), Rob Huebel (Welcome to the Jungle), Vinny Thomas (Platonic), Aubrey Shea (Nashville), Courtney Pauroso (Reno 911!), Ify Nwadiwe (Grand Crew), Jessika Van (Seoul Searching), James A. Janisse (Scream 2022), Sharlene Cruz (In the Summers), Jon Gabrus (101 Places to Party Before You Die), Teri Gamble (Mrs. Davis), Hannah Alline (Doom Patrol), and Gigi Saul Guerrero (Culture Shock).

Details on the segments that make up this horror anthology are being kept under wraps, but Deadline was able to find out that the stories center on the gig economy, hustle culture, and the evils of late-stage capitalism. While the movie digs into those subjects, I hope it will also feature different types of monsters and madmen.

Grant and Dougherty produced Grind alongside Chelsea Stardust. Stardust is also a director, having helmed the 2019 releases Satanic Panic and Into the Dark: All That We Destroy.

I have to admit, the description that says the film is focused on “the gig economy, hustle culture, and the evils of late-stage capitalism” doesn’t exactly get me hyped, but since the movie was co-directed by Brea Grant and has Barbara Crampton in the cast, that means I will be checking it out when it’s released.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man Jack Kesy

A new live-action vision of Hellboy will be coming to our screens soon, a franchise reboot called Hellboy: The Crooked Man that has been directed by Crank‘s Brian Taylor from a screenplay by Chris Golden and Hellboy comic book creator Mike Mignola. We saw a new trailer for the film during the San Diego Comic-Con, and while we’re still waiting to hear of a release date, GamesRadar+ was able to catch up with the film’s star, Jack Kesy, who told them that he didn’t feel any pressure when taking on the role of Hellboy, even though he’s following in the footsteps of Ron Perlman (who played the character in two movies) and David Harbour (who played Hellboy in the most recent film).

Kesy said, “You know what, I love a good challenge, I’ve always been like that so I was excited to take it on. Everyone, the supporters, the haters, whoever, bring them on. You know it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. You always get an opportunity to play people similar to yourself but when do you get a chance to be in full prosthetic, playing iconic characters? The excitement topped everything.” He went on to say that when he got the job, he only felt “excitement and a little bit of creative pressure, like, ‘How am I going to do this?’ I’ve never worked in prosthetics.’ But we collaborated with the director [Brian Taylor] and it was one day at a time, one scene at a time.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man will see Hellboy and a rookie BPRD agent stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia. There, they discover a small community haunted by witches, led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy’s past: the Crooked Man. In the comic, The Crooked Man was an eighteenth-century miser and war profiteer named Jeremiah Witkins who was hanged for his crimes yet returned from Hell as the region’s resident Devil. The film has been rated R for some violent content, language and nudity.

Kesy may be best known for playing Black Tom Cassidy in Deadpool 2. Kesy is joined in the cast by Jefferson White of Yellowstone as Tom Ferrell and Adeline Rudolph of the Netflix Resident Evil series as Bobbie Jo Song. According Hellboy.Fandom, Tom Ferrell is a character from the comic books who “was born around 1923 in the Appalachian mountains near the Hurricane (an area locals try to avoid) to a mother we know little of and his father, Charles E. Ferrel, who had a habit of drinking in the back woods. His early misadventures with witchcraft led to a self-imposed exodus.” Tales from the Collection adds that the story will introduce parapsychologist Bobbie Jo Song, who is tasked with delivering a spider to the BPRD but must seek Hellboy’s help when things go awry. Together, they travel to Appalachia to take on the Crooked Man, who has been sent back to Earth to collect souls for the devil.

Millennium Media producer Les Weldon told us this is “a true, dark, DARK, in the style of the comic book take on it. There’s no gloss that any of the other films had. There’s a methodical pace and a real creepiness to it.

brick, blu-ray

Before Rian Johnson gained notoriety with his Star Wars sequel, The Last Jedi, and his whodunnit mystery films, Knives Out and Glass Onion, he made a name for himself on the indie scene with Brick. Brick would start his working relationship with his Looper star, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The film also co-starred Lukas Haas, Emilie de Ravin, Nora Zehetner, and Noah Fleiss. Now, Blu-ray.com has unveiled that the physical media label Kino Lorber will be releasing Brick on 4K Blu-ray. This new remastering is scheduled to hit retailers on October 15.

Brendan Frye (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, The Lookout, Looper) is a high school loner, someone who knows all the angles but has chosen to stay on the outside. When the girl he loves turns up dead, he is determined to find the “who” and “why” and plunges into the dark and dangerous social strata of rich girl Laura (Nora Zehetner, Beneath), intimidating Tugger (Noah Fleiss, Joe the King), drug-addled Dode (Noah Segan, Deadgirl), seductive Kara (Meagan Good, D.E.B.S.), and the ominous Pin (Lukas Haas, Witness). But who can he really trust? These are the ingredients of Brick, a gritty and provocative thriller co-starring screen legend Richard Roundtree (Shaft). Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Knives Out) wrote and directed this clever and twist-filled neo-noir that wowed audiences and critics alike.

A little over a year ago, Showtime announced that they were ordering a series – then known as Dexter: Origins, now known as Dexter: Original Sin – that would serve as a prequel series to their popular show Dexter, which finished its eight season initial run back in 2013, then recently came back for a new season (called Dexter: New Blood) that appeared to wrap things up for good… We’ve been hearing Dexter: Original Sin casting announcements here and there in recent weeks, and now Deadline reports that the latest addition to the cast is Amanda Brooks, whose previous credits include Super Pumped, The Birch (pictured above), Christmas Everlasting, Castle Rock, Nashville, Outsiders, and Aquarius.

Brooks will be taking on the role of Becca Spencer, Captain Aaron Spencer’s ex-wife who shares custody of their son, Nicky. On this show, she’ll be sharing the screen with Patrick Gibson of Shadow and Bone (as the young Dexter Morgan), Christian Slater of Mr. Robot (as Dexter’s dad, Harry Morgan), Molly Brown of Senior Year (as Dexter’s younger sister, Debra Morgan), Patrick Dempsey of Grey’s Anatomy (Aaron Spencer, the Captain of Miami Metro Homicide who has a decades-long relationship with Harry Morgan), Christina Milian of Falling Inn Love (as Maria LaGuerta, Miami Metro’s first female homicide detective), James Martinez of Love, Victor (as Angel Batista, an up-and-coming homicide detective who leads with his heart), Alex Shimizu of The Blacklist (as Vince Masuka, a forensic analyst who eagerly shares his expertise while relishing the chance to boss around his new intern, Dexter Morgan), Reno Wilson of Mike & Molly (as Bobby Watt, the longtime partner and confidant of Dexter’s adoptive father, Harry), Sarah Michelle Gellar of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Tanya Martin, the CSI Chief at the Miami Metro Police Department and Dexter Morgan’s new boss), Joe Pantoliano of The Matrix (as Mad Dog), Brittany Allen of The Boys (as Dexter’s biological mother, Laura Moser), Randy Gonzalez of Bloodline (as Santos Jimenez), Aaron Jennings of Pure Genius (as Clark Sanders), Raquel Justice of One Day at a Time (as Sofia), Jasper Lewis of V/H/S (as Dexter’s adoptive mom and wife of Harry, Doris Morgan), Carlo Mendez of The Bay (as Hector Estrada), Isaac Gonzalez Rossi of That’s Amor (as Gio), and Roberto Sanchez of Palm Royale (as Tony Ferrer).

Dexter: Original Sin follows Dexter in 1991 Miami, as a student transitioning into a serial killer in training. When his bloodthirsty urges can no longer be ignored, Dexter finds solace and understanding in Harry. As his only confidant, he teaches Dexter a Code that’s designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to die—all while avoiding getting caught by law enforcement. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.

Played by Michael C. Hall in the nine seasons of Dexter, the title character is “a serial killer with a code which directs his compulsions to kill only the guilty. As a blood spatter analyst for the Miami police, he has access to crime scenes, picking up clues and checking DNA to confirm a target’s guilt before he kills them.“ Hall will be narrating this prequel series.

Dexter: Original Sin will be available from Paramount+ with Showtime. The first season of the show is expected to consist of 10 episodes. Production is currently underway in Miami.

Clyde Phillips, who served as showrunner on the first four seasons of Dexter and returned to the job for Dexter: New Blood, serves as showrunner on this new show as well. Phillips is also executive producing alongside Scott Reynolds, Mary Leah Sutton, Tony Hernandez, Lilly Burns, and Michael C. Hall. Robert Lloyd Lewis is producing with Showtime Studios and Counterpart Studios. Michael Lehmann, who directed Slater in the cult classic film Heathers, will serve as directing executive producer. The show is being creatively overseen by Gary Levine and Urooj Sharif for Showtime Studios, with production supervised by Tara Power. It will be distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution outside of Paramount+ markets.
