Wilhelm Scream, Ben Burtt, Star Wars

Arrrgghhhh! We all know the Wilhelm Scream, the iconic piece of audio that has been featured in countless movies and TV shows over the decades, but Ben Burtt, the man credited with rediscovering it for the original Star Wars movie, told THR that he had “created a monster.

The Wilhelm Scream can be traced back to Distant Drums, a 1951 Western starring Gary Cooper. It found its way into Warner Bros.’ stock sound library and was used in many other films, but it achieved fame when Burtt put it into Star Wars as part of an in-joke with his friends.

It was a scream I first heard as a child. I recorded it off the television. It was in many of the Warner Bros. films in the 1950s and ’60s. It was a stock scream in their library, and it had been used in a lot of Westerns. For cowboys getting shot with arrows or whatever,” Burtt said. “It was just one of the many sounds I had.” While attending USC alongside fellow future sound editor Richard Anderson, the pair would insert the scream in their student films and laugh about it. During the production of Star Wars, Burtt was able to track down the original recording, and the game was on.

So in Star Wars, I stuck it in for a stormtrooper falling into a trench when he gets shot. It was just for my own pleasure. Nobody asked for it. Nobody noticed it. That was it. The next time might have been for More American Graffiti. I stuck it in. After that, I started seeing how far I could go with it. Richard Anderson had gone back to L.A. and he was working on other films, and he started putting it in his movies. We played this game of one-upmanship for 25 years, just the two of us knowing what we were doing.

Burtt continued: “He would put it in a Quentin Tarantino film and call me up and challenge me to find it. I put it in an Indiana Jones movie. It was a private joke. Nobody said a thing. It wasn’t until the Internet came along, it must have been around 2000 or so when people could collectively talk about trivia and DVDs were on hand so you could study these movies. Suddenly everybody was hearing the same scream on all these Lucas films, and on a few others, and began wondering what it was. Somehow the word got out. I didn’t mention it. But then it escaped onto the Internet and became, what do you call it, a meme? Is that what it is? I don’t know. Now it’s everywhere. I just heard it in a commercial on TV yesterday. An insurance commercial. It’s just crazy. I stopped putting it in. But even when I stopped, my crew would put it in because they felt it had to be there. I couldn’t stop them. I created a monster.

What started as an in-joke to Burtt and his friends got out of control. “I never intended that,” Burtt said. “If you Google me, the first thing it says is: ‘Ben Burtt, creator of the Wilhelm Scream.’ I say to my wife: ‘Is that what I’m known for?’ It was a joke I made once and now I can never live it down.” Nowadays, Burtt says that including the Wilhelm Scream is a rite of passage for sound editors. “A kind of audio baptism,” he said. “You put it in and join the club. But none of it was intentional.

Daredevil: Born Again, Netflix

When it was first announced that Charlie Cox would be returning for Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+, there was a question of how closely it would (or wouldn’t) connect to the original Netflix series. Cox, along with fellow returning stars Vincent D’Onofrio, Jon Bernthal, Deborah Ann Woll, and Elden Henson, told Entertainment Weekly that “our history stands” regarding the previous three seasons.

What the characters went through still exists, that’s still part of who they are, it’s just that now we’re catching up with them at a different point in their lives,” said Woll.

Cox added, “Deborah and I had a scene where we find an old box — am I allowed to say that? I think I can say that. We had a scene where we were looking through a box and we find stuff from the past, and it was real stuff from the past. It was stuff from the old [show]. It was like a photo frame we used on a set eight years ago and we were looking at it together — well, I wasn’t looking at it. But we were reminiscing over it, and it was sweet. It was kind of a little bit of life imitating art.

Although Cox said that having a “shared character history” gives Daredevil: Born Againtexture,” he also cautions that too many callbacks can be an enemy. “Because that is the stuff that’s left behind you as you go forward and then you’re tied to it,” he said. “I felt like the writers and [showrunner] Dario [Scardapane] did a really amazing job at finding a way for us to have our history, to have our connections, but not dwelling on it so much that you are tied to it the whole time.” Considering Daredevil: Born Again apparently had no connections to the Netflix series when it first started production, I think fans will be pleased that so much has been woven into the new story.

The actor added that while they didn’t want to “alienate” new viewers who may not have seen the original Daredevil series on Netflix, they still wanted to serve long-time fans. “It’s a really tough job so I’m so impressed with what the writers managed to do by allowing us to keep that history but also present it in a way where it isn’t alienating,” Cox said.

Daredevil: Born Again will premiere on Disney+ on March 2025.

Halle Berry, Deadpool & Wolverine, Storm

Deadpool & Wolverine was packed with cameos from previous Marvel characters, but one actress who didn’t make an appearance was Halle Berry. While speaking with ComicBook.com, Berry said she was actually approached by Ryan Reynolds’ wife, Blake Lively, about reprising her role of Storm in the Deadpool sequel… only for Reynolds to never reach out.

When asked if anyone had reached out to her about playing Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine, Berry said, “No. Blake [Lively] asked me one time — I ran into her at a Marc Jacobs fashion show — and she said, ‘Would you ever be in my husband’s movie as Storm?’ I said, ‘Yeah, if he asked me,’ but he never asked me.” Reynolds! Would have been the perfect opportunity for a reprise of Storm’s iconic line: “Do you know what happens to a toad when it’s struck by lightning? The same thing that happens to everything else.” Deadpool would have had a ball with that.

Berry will next be seen starring alongside Mark Wahlberg in The Union. The action comedy follows Mike (Wahlberg), a New Jersey construction worker whose simple life is upended when his long-lost high-school sweetheart, Roxanne (Halle Berry), shows up to recruit him on a dangerous intelligence mission in Europe. The film will debut on Netflix on August 16th.

Taking place six years after the events of the last movie, Deadpool & Wolverine finds Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) toiling away in civilian life with his days as Deadpool behind him. But when his homeworld faces an existential threat, he must suit up once again and convince a reluctant Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) to help save his universe. In addition to Reynolds and Jackman, the cast also includes Matthew Macfadyen, Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Brianna Hildebrand, Shioli Kutsuna, Rob Delany, Stefan Kapičić, and more.

Our own Chris Bumbray had a lot of fun with Deadpool & Wolverine, which sounds like a real crowd-pleaser. “Have you ever been to a concert and wished that your favourite band would stop playing their not-as-good new stuff and play the hits? That’s exactly what Marvel is doing with Deadpool & Wolverine,” Bumbray wrote in his review. “After a rough run of movies, with many saying their Phase 5 has been disastrous, this feels like an everything but the kitchen-sink attempt by the company to win back those fans who feel alienated by the new direction the company seemed to be heading in. With this, you have a rock ‘em, sock ‘em thrill ride that delivers fans exactly the movie they wanted to see, with nary a message to be found amidst all the charred, sliced and diced corpses our heroes leave in their wake. It’s glorious fun.” You can check out the rest of Bumbray’s spoiler-free review right here, and don’t forget to let us know what you think of Deadpool & Wolverine as well!

J. Jonah Jameson, Stan Lee, J.K. Simmons

J.K. Simmons‘ portrayal of J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy is iconic, but it’s a role that Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee wanted for himself. While speaking with GQ, Simmons said that Lee confessed to him that he was jealous they didn’t even ask him to play the part.

I had never met Stan and didn’t even know, and this is kind of obvious to anyone who’s really paying attention or smarter than I am, but JJJ was kind of based on Stan, the comic version of himself,” Simmons said. “He confessed to me at the time that, you know, he was a little jealous that they didn’t ask him to play the part in the movie, but ‘having seen you do it, I thought you were fantastic.’ Very, very nice things, which obviously, coming from the man, was a great, great compliment.

After playing the J. Jonah Jameson in all three Spider-Man movies, it seemed that we had seen the last of Simmons as the boisterous Daily Bugle publisher. However, fans were shocked when he returned in the mid-credits scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Simmons said that by the time they asked him to reprise the role, “the movie was [already] in the can.

The actor was intrigued by the idea of reprising the role but was upset that the producers didn’t want to do the flattop haircut, the mustache, or the cigar. “I was like, that’s half the guy, what do you mean?” Simons said. He eventually got them to agree to the mustache, and they quickly shot the scene a day or two later. “We shot it in somebody’s office,” he said. “It wasn’t on stage. It happened fast.” In fact, it happened so fast that Simmons suspects the reason they didn’t want to do the flattop haircut was because they “didn’t have time to get a wig made. I think it may have come down to that.” Simmons returned as Jameson for a slightly more substantial appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Simmons has a number of projects on his slate, including starring alongside Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry in The Union (coming to Netflix on August 16th), playing Milton Berle in Saturday Night (hitting theaters on October 11th), playing Santa Claus opposite Dwayne Johnson in Red One (set for a November 15th release), and more.

Tobe Hooper, who had previously made The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Eaten Alive, Salem’s Lot, and The Funhouse, directed Poltergeist from a screenplay that producer Steven Spielberg wrote with Michael Grais and Mark Victor. Spielberg also crafted the initial story. The film has the following synopsis: Strange and creepy happenings beset an average California family, the Freelings — Steve, Diane, teenaged Dana, eight-year-old Robbie, and five-year-old Carol Ann — when ghosts commune with them through the television set. Initially friendly and playful, the spirits turn unexpectedly menacing, and, when Carol Ann goes missing, Steve and Diane turn to a parapsychologist and eventually an exorcist for help.

Craig T. Nelson, JoBeth Williams, Dominique Dunne, Oliver Robins, Heather O’Rourke, Beatrice Straight, Michael McManus, Virginia Kiser, Martin Casella, Richard Lawson, James Karen, Dirk Blocker, and Zelda Rubinstein star, with appearances by The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2‘s Lou Perryman and Predator‘s Sonny Landham.

Originally released on June 4, 1982, Poltergeist was made on a budget of $10.7 million and ended up earning more than $121 million at the box office.
