The Stepfather

Back in April, JoBlo’s own Kier Gomes – who hosts the JoBlo Originals Live Stream, Friday Night Flicks, on our JoBlo Originals channel – put together an episode of the Deconstructing series that took a look at the 1987 classic The Stepfather. A couple of months ago, we shared the news that Kier also contributed an audio commentary to the new 4K and Blu-ray release of The Stepfather from Scream Factory – and today happens to be the release date for that 4K and Blu-ray! Copies are available at THIS LINK.

Directed by Joseph Ruben from a screenplay by popular crime novelist Donald E. Westlake (who crafted the story with
Carolyn Lefcourt and Death Wish author Brian Garfield), The Stepfather has the following synopsis: Jerry Blake is a family man, but he happens to have a series of families, with each one on the receiving end of his murderous ways. When Jerry sets his sights on a lovely widow named Susan and her headstrong daughter, Stephanie, it appears that his brutal pattern of killings will continue. However, Stephanie begins to suspect that there’s something wrong with the seemingly well-adjusted Jerry, and a violent confrontation is inevitable.

The film stars Terry O’Quinn, Shelley Hack, Jill Schoelen, Charles Lanyer, Stephen Shellen, Stephen E. Miller, Robyn Stevan, and Jeff Schultz.

Kier had this to say about getting involved with Scream Factory’s new release of The Stepfather: “The Stepfather (1987) is one of those films that gave me the creeps as a young child and has remained one of my staple rewatches every autumn when Halloween rolls around. It’s a movie that I’ve not only seen, but studied as an aspiring filmmaker my entire life. As a fan, I spent weeks working on a video essay for our JoBlo Horror Originals channel that would deconstruct what works so well about the film and its cult legacy among horror fans. The video was meant to be a love letter to the cast and crew who made it, but turned into something even better. About a month or two after posting the video, a member of Shout Factory’s development team contacted our company and asked if I was interested in helping to create some of the bonus material for the 4K Blu-Ray release. Now, as a physical media lover AND a fan of the film- the answer was an instant yes.

When getting in contact with Shout, my contact with the company was incredibly excited about adding some additional content to the special features. I was half expecting them to ask me for a quote and that would be that, so you can imagine how excited I was to find out that Shout was sending me a 4K screener of the movie and requesting a full 90-minute audio commentary to pair with the film. So, I spent a few days doing even more research and really fleshing out my love and knowledge of the film and when the time came I sat down, watched the best looking version of the film I’ve ever seen, and spent the duration of the film talking about all things The Stepfather. As a kid I enjoyed director’s commentary tracks on the special features of my favorite films, and now I get to be ONE of the talented people to provide viewers with one of my very own. I’m truly excited and a bit nervous for my work to be heard by so many people, but I could not be more proud of this project and my involvement in it.

Schoelen kindly mentioned Kier’s involvement while promoting the release on social media yesterday:

Fear the Walking Dead cast member Colman Domingo has executive produced a horror film called It’s What’s Inside, which earned a lot of positive reviews after having its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival at the start of this year. (You can read an 8/10 review from JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray right HERE.) The Netflix streaming service quickly picked up the distribution rights for $17 million, with their plan being to release the movie on October 4th – and with that date right around the corner, a trailer for the film has arrived online! You can check it out in the embed above.

It’s What’s Inside marks the feature directorial debut of Greg Jardin, who also wrote the screenplay. Details on the plot are being kept under wraps, with most reviewers doing their best to keep the movie’s secrets. The set-up is, A pre-wedding party descends into an existential nightmare when an estranged friend shows up with a mysterious suitcase. Jardin told Entertainment Weekly, “The central theme that I kept coming back to really revolves around artificial intimacy, that is, how we’ve all become reliant on screens for not only our self-worth, but for our general sense of how we connect with one another on a romantic level. So, in this case, we focus on a relationship in crisis, where both members of the relationship have consumed such a high amount of online artifice, that they each have issues connecting with one another because their collective values have been so warped.

The film stars Brittany O’Grady (The White Lotus), James Morosini (I Love My Dad), Gavin Leatherwood (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Devon Terrell (Rap Sh!t), Nina Bloomgarden (The Resort), Reina Hardesty (What Comes Around), David W. Thompson (The Boys), Madison Davenport (Sharp Objects), and Domingo’s Fear the Walking Dead co-star Alycia Debnam-Carey.

Domingo executive produced the film through his company Edith Productions, alongside Raúl Domingo. Kate Andrews produced for Boldly Go Productions, William Rosenfeld produced for Such Content, and Jason Baum is a producer on the film as well. Such Content’s Robert Kapp serves as an executive producer. Such Content also provided the financing. Filming took place in Portland, Oregon over the course of 18 days.

After the consecutive years of working on Marvel projects, Elizabeth Olsen recently talked about finding other projects that she can explore outside of the superhero realm. She stated, “I don’t want… it’s not that I don’t want to be associated as just this character. But I really feel like I need to be building other parts back up for balance. I so much want to do films right now. And I hope some of them come together in the way I feel like they can. But yeah, that’s something that I need. I just need other characters in my life. There’s no longevity in one character.”

In her post-MCU career, Olsen has starred in HBO’s limited series Love & Death, she has the Netflix drama His Three Daughters coming out, as well as roles in films like Love Child and the rom-com, Eternity. Although its understandable she’s ready to move on and not be tied to a single character, Olsen isn’t completely counting out a return to the MCU. According to Collider, the actress recently spoke on FM104 about being open to revisiting Wanda. She stated,

It’s a character that I love going back to when there’s a way to use her well, and I think I have been lucky that when I started I was used well. I think people didn’t know what to do with me for a second there… if there’s a good way to use her I’m always happy to come back.”

While Olsen is expanding to other projects now, she credits WandaVision as being a career move that no one thought she’d make. She explained in Harper’s Bazaar“My career curveball was Wandavision. No one forced me to do that! I have made a choice to continue on with Marvel, and they’ve made a choice to continue on with me. I was really scared about doing a Marvel project for TV, because these are otherworldly, larger-than-life characters that are seen in films, and I didn’t know if it would still work on a television at home. But I had confidence in the format because the storytelling really honoured the TV medium.”

She continues, “We really felt we were Marvel’s weird cousin. We didn’t know it was going to have such a response. It came out during the pandemic and it almost had way more relevance to everyone’s lives; [we were all] trying to function in these bubbles that we were put in, and then there was this world outside of a bubble. No-one even knew what reality was at that point!”
