blood on snow

Deadline has revealed that Tom Hardy and Aaron Taylor-Johnson will be working with True Detective and No Time to Die director Cary Fukunaga on the film adaptation of Blood on Snow. The movie is based on the crime thriller novel by author Jo Nesbø. Nesbø will also be penning the script for his own adaptation with revisions done by Ben Power. The logline involves the plot taking place in 1970s Oslo, where two rival gang leaders—Hoffman and the Fisherman (Hardy) —vie for control.

Hardy and Dean Baker will produce the movie under their Hardy Son & Baker company alongside producers Fukunaga, Nesbø, Niclas Salomonsson, and Hayden Lautenbach. Both Hardy and Taylor-Johnson can be seen this later year in Sony’s Spider-verse movies Venom: The Last Dance and Kraven the Hunter.

The synopsis for the story reads,
“Hoffman’s trusted hitman, Olav (Johnson), is a cold, efficient killer, perfect for the job. But beneath his ruthless exterior lies an unexpected intelligence and an unwavering moral code shaped by a complicated childhood…When Hoffman orders his own wife to be murdered, Olav’s principles clash with his loyalties. Instead of pulling the trigger, he hatches a scheme that makes him Hoffman’s next target and with nowhere safe to turn, Olav forms an uneasy alliance that places him at the heart of Oslo’s deadly gang war. Once a violent enforcer, Olav’s choice makes him an unlikely hero in a world where no good deed goes unpunished.”

Meanwhile, Netflix is also adapting one of Nesbø’s other novels for the series, Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole, which will star Tobias Santelmann, Joel Kinnaman and Pia Tjelta. The mystery’s plot is led by “famed anti-hero detective Harry Hole. Underneath the surface, this series is a nuanced character drama about two police officers — and supposed colleagues — operating on opposite sides of the law. Throughout the first season, Harry goes head-to-head with his long-time adversary and corrupt detective, Tom Waaler. Harry is a brilliant but tormented homicide detective who struggles with his demons. As the two navigate the blurred ethical lines of the criminal justice system, Harry must do all he can to catch a serial killer and bring Waaler to justice before it is too late.”

Joker: Folie à Deux is just weeks away and while the movie was somewhat being billed as a musical, both director Todd Phillips and star Lady Gaga are curbing expectations for audiences who are thinking they are in for an In the Heights-type experience. Phillips stated,  “Most of the music in the movie is really just dialogue,” Phillips said. “It’s just Arthur not having the words to say what he wants to say, so he sings them instead.” Phillips added, “I just don’t want people to think that it’s like In the Heights, where the lady in the bodega starts to sing and they take it out onto the street, and the police are dancing. No disrespect, because I loved In the Heights.“ At the Venice Film Festival, Gaga said she would describe it as a musical, “It’s very different. The music is a way to give the characters a way to express themselves because the dialogue wasn’t enough.”

According to Deadline, the film’s star Joaquin Phoenix would also add an anecdote about getting in Arthur Fleck’s shape for the sequel. Phoenix is one of those actors who really commits to the role and for the last Joker film, he revealed in 2020 that he lost a staggering 52 pounds to embody the role of Arthur Fleck. This time, Phoenix explains,

I’m not going to talk through specifics of the diet, but this time it felt a bit more complicated just because there was so much dance rehearsal that we were doing, which I didn’t have last time. I’m now 49, I probably shouldn’t do this again. This is probably it for me.”

Phoenix would also field a question about his recent departure from Todd Haynes‘ film that was set to go into production. Haynes’ film revolves around two men who are intense lovers and leave California for Mexico. The reason for Phoenix’s exit is unclear. Still, some have wondered if the project’s intimate and explicit content was a factor. Phoenix would be inquired about the situation surrounding his abrupt exit and he would reply, “If I do, I’d just be sharing my opinion from my perspective and the other creatives aren’t here to share their piece so I don’t think that would be helpful. So I won’t.”

PLOT: West Texas. A boy who, after his sister is kidnapped by a violent killer known only as Cut Throat Bill, enlists a fierce bounty hunter named Reginald Jones who becomes the leader of the group of outcasts searching for the stolen girl.

REVIEW: If there’s one thing I’ve always appreciated about Peter Dinklage it’s that he often avoids roles that highlight his dwarfism. He’s such a presence that he can take a role intended for a larger actor and make it totally believable. His desire to not be put into a box is quite commendable and it shines through in his work. He’s always putting his best foot forward, and creating interesting characters, which is why I was immediately interested in his new Western, The Thicket. Add in an eclectic group of side characters and you’ve got the makings of one of the better Westerns of the year.

The narrative behind The Thicket is in line with what you would expect: a woman is kidnapped by a group of bandits and a bounty hunter is tasked with getting her back. It’s so simple yet immediately gives the viewer a desire for a solution. This is a tough world and death feels like it’s around every corner whether it’s bandits or brothel owners. Levon Hawke (son of actors Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman and brother to Maya Hawke) is the boy, Jack, who is trying to find his sister. He’s fine, but the role itself is a bit intentionally whiney so I had a hard time connecting. I was more intrigued by the sister, Lulu (Esme Creed-Miles) as she has a much more difficult journey. Her interactions with Cutthroat Bill are some of the best moments of the film.

Peter Dinklage in The Thicket (2024).

It’s not a surprise to hear that this was a passion project for Dinklage who is great as Reginald Jones, the bounty hunter tasked with getting Jack’s sister back. He’s clearly been bounty hunting for a long time and has a firm grasp on every situation. He feels like a cousin to Christoph Waltz’ Dr. King Schultz from Django. I swear I’ve seen more Westerns than the ones made by Tarantino, but I’ll continue to make comparisons since they’re the most prominent of the last few decades. Juliette Lewis absolutely relishes in being the bad guy, Cutthroat Bill. Her gravelly voice helps hide some of the scenery chewing she’s doing and it’s glorious. There’s an unpredictability to Bill, where any character in her orbit could die at any time. Those types of characters are hard to pull off but I think Lewis brings just the right balance of crazy. This was her best role in years and should hopefully lead to a comeback of sorts.

The Thicket features so many recognizable faces, each one as unexpected as the last. Comedian Andrew Schulz appears as a brothel owner and really leans into the southern twang. Metallica’s own James Hetfield plays a lawman on the hunt for Cutthroat Bill.. Batgirl‘s Leslie Grace has a bit role as a prostitute, but it’s mostly so Jack can play savior. And while the characters range from great to stereotypical, they’re always introduced in such a nonchalant way, that it further grounds the film.

Juliette Lewis, Levon Hawke, and Esme Creed Miles in The Thicket (2024).

Sometimes Independent Westerns can feel a little cheap in their production design but the world here feels real and lived in. There’s a layer of dirt and grime on every person and building and it adds to the texture of the production design. I also really appreciated that, despite this being a Western, they weren’t afraid to set this in the snow. Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight seemed to open modern Westerns up to the idea and it’s really wonderful. As someone who gets really bored with the constant desert aesthetic, it’s a nice change of pace, visually.

While it may be a bit predictable, I really enjoyed my time with The Thicket. It’s a tad on the slower side so it may turn off modern audiences but the characters bring enough intrigue that it’s still rewarding. There are times when the film plays it a bit safe, which prevents it from reaching that next level. Even still, Dinklage proves once again why he’s so good for these larger-than-life characters. His presence, along with Lewis, helps some of the otherwise dull moments from dampening the experience. I could easily watch more exploits of Reginald Jones and hope to see more of Dinklage’s passion projects see the light of day.

THE THICKET IS PLAYING ONLY IN THEATERS ON SEPTEMBER 6TH, 2024.

Video game movies with a prominent storyline don’t often transfer to the big screen in a way that can live up to its source material. The movie Borderlands is a recent example. However, with a game like Minecraft, in which the whole thing is a sandbox of which the player can make anything they want, the possibilities can be endless for how a movie adapts the property. Get a peek at how things unfold in the new trailer for A Minecraft Movie.

From Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures and starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, A Minecraft Movie, directed by Jared Hess, is the first-ever big-screen, live-action adaptation of Minecraft, the best-selling video game of all time. The film also stars Emma Myers (Wednesday), Oscar nominee Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Sebastian Eugene Hansen (Just Mercy, Lisey’s Story), with Jennifer Coolidge.

Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival!  Four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks)—find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination.  To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black).  Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.

Oscar nominee Hess (Ninety-Five Senses, Nacho Libre) directed, with Roy Lee, Jon Berg, Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Jason Momoa, Jill Messick, Torfi Frans Olafsson and Vu Bui producing, and Todd Hallowell, Kayleen Walters, Brian Mendoza, Jonathan Spaihts, Pete Chiappetta, Andrew Lary and Anthony Tittanegro executive producing.

The director’s creative team behind the camera includes BAFTA-nominated director of photography Enrique Chediak (127 Hours, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts), Oscar-winning production designer Grant Major (The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, The Meg), editor James Thomas (Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, the Borat films), Oscar-winning VFX supervisor Dan Lemmon (The Jungle Book, The Batman), and costume designer Amanda Neale (The Meg, What We Do in the Shadows).  Casting is by Rachel Tenner.  The music supervisors are Gabe Hilfer and Karyn Rachtman, and the music is by Mark Mothersbaugh (Thor: Ragnarok, the LEGO® movies).

halloween prequel

If small screen horror franchise prequels are going to be a thing, then you know all of us here are ready for them. We’ve seen some snags in the Friday the 13th series Crystal Lake, but with that looking to be back on track that will make for a high-profile expansion on the series. We, too, can also look forward to It – Welcome to Derry, which is set to premiere on HBO next year. Joining them could be a prequel series to the Halloween franchise, with the focus being on Dr. Sam Loomis, the psychiatrist who was assigned to Michael Myers after murdering his older sister.

As Titus Peoples – who produced 2020’s The Cattle Farmer – posted on Instagram, “Still very much so in the early development of things but I’ve always wondered about the life of Dr. Samuel Loomis before getting to Michael. With the help of my co creator and co-writer @pbr__papi we will expand on the “Halloween” Mythology with this series. Pilot episode 90% written.. Ultimate Class Studios going crazy! Pen to pad and belt to ass! The cases before Michael…”

Obviously, very few details are known at this point, but when iHorror reached out to Peoples over the Halloween prequel, he said, “I think fans are going to really appreciate the extended world we are building in the Halloween universe. Dr. Samuel Loomis is such an interesting character so it would be great to explore who he was before he met Michael.”

While building on well-loved franchises can put fans on high alert, I think exploring Loomis is a terrific idea for a Halloween prequel series. After all, we already know so much about Michael Myers and, really, do we need to see what he was up to when he was three years old? As far as Halloween characters go, Loomis is absolutely the one worth learning more about. Hell, we were asking for one almost a decade ago!

Psycho prequel series Bates Motel went off the air but clearly made enough of an impression to inspire others. As of now, Brad Caleb Kane is serving as showrunner for both Crystal Lake and It – Welcome to Derry, which wrapped production last month.

Do you think a Halloween prequel series focusing on Dr. Loomis could work? Who would make a perfect younger version?
