Capcom’s ambition to bring some of its big-hitting AAA games to mobile devices is certainly to be applauded. It’s a bold ambition, to see Resident Evil 7 on a tablet. So it’s a shame the project has been pretty disastrous, the games barely shifting any copies. And Capcom’s reaction? Make it far, far more inconvenient…

Scientology has an extensive list of celebrities associated with the practice. We know the usual names: Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Elisabeth Moss are current prominent members, while some, like Leah Remini, Beck and Jason Lee, have all left for various reasons. And then there are those who were never given a chance. As it turns out, the Church of Scientology had no mercy on John Stamos.
As he recalled on Matt Friend’s Friends in High Places podcast (via EW), John Stamos remembered at first being lured into Scientology by a babe long before he got his first acting gig on General Hospital. “I was in an acting class and there was this hot girl. She said, ‘You know, we’re all meeting at this address on Hollywood Boulevard, come after [class]!’ I was working at my dad’s restaurant at the time and I said, ‘Dad I gotta, I gotta go.’ So I went and it was the Scientology building. I was 16, 17.”
Upon sitting in on a Scientology session where he had to hold an E-Meter (a device used to “measures mental state and change of state”, according to the official website), he couldn’t help but mock the scenario. “You’re holding these two cans, so I started, you know, ‘Hello…Peabody in the Wayback Machine!’ You know, Sherman and Peabody.” And that was about all it took for Stamos to be booted from any further sessions at the Church of Scientology. “They didn’t like that. I was just f*cking around so much that they said, ‘Get out. Get. Go.’ They just kinda kicked me out.” Interestingly, also around this time John Stamos found himself on the set of Grease, whose star, noted Scientologist John Travolta, was an inspiration for the up-and-coming actor.
Several years after toying with Scientology, John Stamos would land his true breakout, Full House, where he played Jesse Katsopolis, the uncle obsessed with Elvis…who was, by coincidence, also reportedly once lured into a meeting at the Church of Scientology. Presley’s wife and daughter also had ties to Scientology at different points.
While Stamos says he dodged a bullet – or at least a missing persons report – by goofing off, he has fared quite well without Scientology.
From Black Myth: Wukong and Star Wars Outlaws to Dustborn and Madden NFL 25, we reviewed a lot of games last month. But perhaps no title left us feeling more satisfied and accomplished than Visions of Mana, the first new mainline entry in Square Enix’s Mana series in over 15 years. Dr. Mark Chavez, who sold ketamine to another doctor tied to the death of Matthew Perry, has been released on a $500,000 bond just two weeks after being arrested. He, too, is expressing remorse over the death, which occurred in October of last year.
Outside of a Los Angeles courthouse this week, a lawyer defending Chavez stated that the former doctor – who has since been stripped of his license – is “incredibly remorseful”, while a defense attorney added that this sentiment was not solely because of the fame that Matthew Perry had but also because it happened to any patient of his. That attorney also added, “He is trying to do everything in his power to right the wrong that happened here. He didn’t accept responsibility today, but only because it wasn’t on the calendar.” Chavez was expected to plead guilty in the death of Matthew Perry on Friday, August 30th. This has now been pushed back to the fall.
Chavez is just one in a long line of people that were arrested earlier this month. The others involved are: Jasveen Sangha, who has been dubbed “The Ketamine Queen”, Dr. Salvador Plasencia, Eric Fleming (who plead guilty to distributing the ketamine), and Kenneth Iwamasa, who served as Matthew Perry’s live-in assistant at the time of his death. At the time, a key U.S. attorney declaring these individuals “took advantage of Mr. Perry’s addiction issues to enrich themselves.” More arrests are expected to take place, according to Deadline.
While we will have to wait to see how this all shakes out, there does seem to be some damning evidence working against at least some of those tied directly to Matthew Perry’s death, including text messages that indicated that they wanted to charge the actor as much as they could for the ketamine, taking full advantage of both his wealth and addictions.
Matthew Perry had been focusing on staying sober for quite some time, with seldom media appearances over the past few years. But many will find it fitting that his last credit was on the Friends reunion, as that sitcom remained his trademark work for his entire career.
One night, I happened to be in the same movie theater as Gary Oldman watching Blue Jasmine. We weren’t together in a formal sense, but we were sharing the experience of leaving the house, going to the cinema and watching something unfold before our eyes. You just don’t get that at home – and not just because Gary Oldman has turned down every invite I’ve sent. But people of a certain generation will always champion going to the theater to see a movie; now, Kevin Bacon is taking a stand to join the cause.
In a new video, Kevin Bacon records himself coming out of a daytime showing of Strange Darling, saying it was the third movie he had seen at the theater that week (along with Blink Twice and Alien: Romulus). And while he loved all of these and had nothing but praise for the filmmakers, he noted that his opinion on the movies doesn’t matter – but getting to the cinema does. “I’m not saying this because my opinion is of any value when it comes to movies and what you’re going to like. But what I’m saying is, going out to the movies is a very special experience. This is the experience that I grew up with, it’s what made me want to be in the movies, going to see Dog Day Afternoon and Godfather and Chinatown and Tootsie…It’s a really great thing to go and share that experience…A guy stopped me in the bathroom and said, ‘Wow, man, what did you think of that movie?’ I said, ‘That was crazy!’ That was an experience that we share.”
A recent study indicated that two-thirds of people would rather skip the theater experience altogether and stream a movie from their couch. And while Bacon couldn’t deny the convenience of that, he knows what’s ultimately better. “It’s cool to stay home and watch things, for sure, I’m all about it, I love my shows. But once in a while, go to the movies. It’s cool as hell.”
Bacon had two movies out this year, both of which highlight the importance of the modern theater: MaXXXine took in just $15 million domestically despite the franchise’s cult following, while Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F had huge streaming numbers for Netflix when we all know it should have gone to the big screen.
Are you on Kevin Bacon’s side when it comes to seeing a movie at the theater? How many do you typically catch in a month? Pick your favorite seat and let us know below!
The blockbuster summer of 2024, which started slowly but rallied (big time) with movies like Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Twisters, came to a quiet end this weekend. As we predicted in our weekly predictions report, Deadpool & Wolverine easily won the weekend, with it grossing $15.1 million for the three-day weekend (tomorrow is a holiday). That puts its domestic total at a gargantuan $604 million, which is unheard of for an R-rated movie. The second highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time is The Passion of the Christ, which made $370 million, although adjusted for inflation, that would be like $616 million. However, within a week or two, Deadpool & Wolverine should be able to close that gap, which is, overall, an absolutely amazing showing for the summer’s most popular movie with the JoBlo audience (check out our summer poll here).
Another R-rated movie, Alien: Romulus, also had a solid weekend, with it grossing $9.3 million, which is only a 43% drop since last weekend. Its domestic total now stands at $88.7 million, but it will easily pass the $100 million mark. Overseas, it’s been a blockbuster, with the international cume likely to cross $300 million by next weekend, meaning a sequel seems to be a no-brainer.
Meanwhile, the popular Blake Lively vehicle, It Ends With Us, which is an adaptation of the Colleen Hoover novel, continued to rake in big business, adding another $7.42 million to its coffers. It’s made $133 million (so far), making it one of the summer’s biggest word-of-mouth hits.
Reagan, a biopic about the famed U.S. President, overcame terrible reviews to become something of a sleeper hit this weekend, grossing $7.4 million despite a lower-key release from indie label Showbiz Direct. Following hot on its heels is Twisters, which has really cemented Glen Powell’s stardom this summer, adding $7.1 million to its huge $258 million domestic total. Oddly, the movie has struggled to find an international audience, with it only grossing slightly north of $100 million overseas (thus far), putting sequel talk into jeopardy given the big budget.
Last weekend’s Blink Twice, which stars Channing Tatum and was directed by Zoe Kravitz, showed signs of life at the box office, dipping only 36% for a $4.6 million weekend. While it will only end its run slightly north of $20 million, this Amazon/MGM release should be a major hit once it hits streaming in a month or two. The faith-based release, The Forge, also had a decent hold, dipping about 32% for a $4.6 million weekend. It’s possible Reagan might have gobbled up some of its audience.
Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 added another $4 million to its $355 million domestic total, with it on track to end its run as the third highest-grossing film in the franchise to date. However, the weekend also had a MAJOR flop, with the poorly reviewed AfrAId (which our own critic slammed) only grossing a tepid $3.7 million despite being open on over 3000 screens. It’s a relatively rare box office misfire for Blumhouse, whose movies can usually overcome bad reviews to deliver respectable grosses. Not this time, it seems. It came close to losing the weekend to the summer’s biggest box office champ, Inside Out 2, which made another $2.7 million, for a staggering $650 million domestic total.
Notably, this weekend also spelled doom for Lionsgate’s The Crow, a much-maligned reboot, which opened to pretty grim business last weekend. It dropped over 60% this weekend for a $1.8 million weekend well outside the top 10. Its domestic total is only $8.6 million so far, and it likely will only clear $10 million domestically by the end of its run. Ouch. Certainly, The Crow and Lionsgate’s other big August release, Borderlands, will go down as the year’s two biggest box office disasters.
Next weekend, we will see the long-awaited (like 36 years) release of Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice. A lot of folks think it might crank $100 million for the weekend. What do you think? Let us know in the comments!
