Frank Grillo has had quite an interesting film career. Appearing in various roles since the 90s, 2011 saw him breaking out in both Warrior and The Grey. Following an appearance in the MCU as Crossbones, Grillo started to find his niche in the action genre. Now, he’s prepping to join the DC film world as Rick Flagg Sr in Creature Commandos as well as Season 2 of Peacemaker. His latest film, Long Gone Heroes, sees Grillo rescuing his niece from a hostage situation in Venezuela. Given the insanity going on in that country, it’s a very modern story, and you can check out my glowing review.

There are times in life when you just kind of have to pinch yourself and make sure you’re not dreaming. I was lucky enough to have one such moment with actor Frank Grillo during a recent interview. The director had sent him my review of the film and he was very appreciative, and happy he could thank me face to face. We also talked about Geezer Teasers, what makes Long Gone Heroes so special, and his excitement about joining James Gunn‘s DC film universe. It was a great chat and shows what a good dude Grillo is. So make sure to check out Long Gone Heroes as well as his appearance is Rick Flagg Sr in the DCU.

Long Gone Heroes plot: Gunner, a special forces soldier who has witnessed the darkest side of country and combat, is forced back into the field of battle to save his niece, who is being held in South America. As the fight intensifies, Gunner and his team discover that her disappearance is part of a corrupt private operation that hits way too close to home. Acclaimed actors Andy Garcia, Melissa Leo, Josh Hutcherson, and Frank Grillo star in a nonstop action-thriller that will leave you breathless.

LONG GONE HEROES IS IN THEATERS, ON DEMAND, AND DIGITAL ON SEPTEMBER 20TH, 2024.

The 4:30 Movie, the sixteenth feature film from director Kevin Smith, received a theatrical release on September 13th, and now it has been revealed that the movie is coming to 4K and Blu-ray on November 5th! Copies of the physical media versions of the movie are available for pre-order on Amazon – including an Amazon-exclusive steelbook edition where the case is designed to look like a large VHS tape and the discs look like VHS tape spools! A fitting design for a movie that’s set in 1986. Images of the steelbook design can be seen right here:

The 4:30 Movie is a coming-of-age comedy that follows three sixteen-year-old friends who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local multiplex. But when one of the guys also invites the girl of his dreams to see the latest comedy, each of the teens will learn something serious about life and love before the credits roll.

Austin Zajur (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark), Nicholas Cirillo (Outer Banks), and Reed Northrup (High Maintenance) play the sixteen year old friends, with Siena Agudong (Resident Evil) as the dream girl. Ken Jeong (The Hangover), Genesis Rodriguez (Tusk), Justin Long (Barbarian), Sam Richardson (Veep), Jason Lee (Almost Famous), Rachel Dratch (I Love My Dad), Kate Micucci (The Big Bang Theory), Adam Pally (Sonic the Hedgehog), Harley Quinn Smith (Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood), Jason Biggs (American Pie), and Method Man (How High) are also in the cast.

The 4:30 Movie was filmed at Smodcastle Cinemas in New Jersey, a theatre Smith now co-owns and used to hang out in every weekend when he was a teenager. Liz Destro, Josh Bachove, and Jordan Monsanto produced, with Bill Bromiley, Shanan Becker, and Jonathan Saba executive producing.

JoBlo’s own Alex Maidy and I were both fans of The 4:30 Movie and rank it highly as one of the best movies Smith has ever made. You can read Alex’s review HERE. I will definitely be adding a copy of this one to my collection of Kevin Smith movies on physical media. A collection that’s only lacking KillRoy Was Here, since that one was released as an NFT.

The back of the 4K release reveals that bonus features include an audio commentary with Kevin Smith and a making of featurette, as well as the trailer.

The Penguin, Scarface, HBO series

The Batman‘s universe continues strong. HBO’s The Penguin is earning positive reviews with a certified fresh rating of 94% with critics and an audience score of 89%. In his review, our Alex Maidy stated, The Penguin easily becomes the best DC or Marvel television series to date, with the bar being raised substantially. Colin Farrell’s performance will easily earn the actor a slew of awards, and it is another jewel in the long-running streak of top-caliber HBO original series. A couple of key moments towards the end of the series will shake up audiences who are unprepared for where The Penguin is headed. Still, it also provides some references that tease us into how these characters will factor into The Batman Part II. Not a single moment in these eight episodes feels wasted or padded, which is surprising since every episode comes close to a full hour, with the premiere and finale going longer than sixty minutes.”

Variety has now revealed that The Penguin has become quite a hit with the Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti show opening to 5.3 million U.S. viewers across all platforms since it debuted on September 19. This figure also includes repeat airings on the premium channel HBO, as well as multiple viewing streams. These numbers make the show a bigger hit than the final season premiere of the Emmy-winning Succession, which had brought in 4.9 million viewers, and the second season premiere of the comedy, The White Lotus, which came to about 4.1 million. However, The Batman spin-off would come just behind the premiere of the crime series True Detective: Night Country, which attracted around 5.7 million viewers. The series would also accumulate the biggest 4-day audience for a new series on Max in every region globally since the adaptation of The Last of Us from January 2023.

As delicious of a role as this is for Colin Farrell, the Irish actor doesn’t see himself continuing to reprise him beyond the show. “Don’t get me wrong – I loved it – but it got in on me a little bit. By the end of it, I was bitching and moaning to anyone who would listen to me that I f*cking wanted it to be finished. I tried to remind them that I had ‘grumpy gratitude.’ I was still grateful, and still honored – I grew up watching Burgess Meredith, and then Danny DeVito was my Penguin – so being a part of the lineage of that storytelling, I really did feel privileged. But by the end of it…”

That’s not a guaranteed no but Colin Farrell’s hesitation at this point to return for a second season of The Penguin isn’t looking good. Thankfully, he at least wasn’t constantly taking the character home with him or getting involved to the point where he started embodying Oz. “It’s not like I didn’t know who I was and I was going out and burning cars and shit, but…if you take what Matt Reeves created and then what Lauren [LeFranc, showrunner] did and what Mike [Marino, prosthetics and make-up designer] did and put them all together, it was a really powerful experience.”

The found footage horror anthology series V/H/S was launched in 2012, with the sequels V/H/S/2 and V/H/S: Viral following in 2013 and 2014. There was a spin-off called SiREN in 2016, then the franchise went dormant for a few years… before being revived by the Shudder streaming service, which has had great success delivering a new V/H/S movie every year. There was V/H/S/94 in 2021, V/H/S/99 in 2022, and V/H/S/85 in 2023 (with another spin-off, called Kids vs. Aliens, also dropping in 2023). There will be no lack of V/H/S this year, as Shudder recently announced they’ll be releasing V/H/S/Beyond on October 4th – and with that date coming up next week, a full trailer for the film has arrived online. You can watch it in the embed above.

A Shudder Original Film made in association with Studio71, V/H/S/Beyond will feature six new bloodcurdling tapes, placing horror at the forefront of a sci-fi-inspired hellscape.

The segments making up this entry in the franchise are:

“Stork”: Directed by Jordan Downey (ThanksKilling, ThanksKilling 3, The Head Hunter), screenplay by Downey and Kevin Stewart

“Fur Babies”: Written and directed by Christian Long and Justin Long, who had acting roles in Jeepers Creepers, Tusk, and Barbarian

“Live and Let Dive”: Directed by Justin Martinez, story by Martinez and Ben Turner, screenplay by Turner. Martinez contributed a segment to the anthology Southbound and directed a segment of the first V/H/S as part of the collective Radio Silence.

“Dream Girl”: Directed by Virat Pal (Recapture), written by Pal and Evan Dickson

“Stowaway”: Directed by actress Kate Siegel, making her directorial debut, working from a script written by her frequent collaborator (and husband) Mike Flanagan (Hush, The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, etc.)

There will also be a special presentation by Jay Cheel (Cursed Films, How to Build a Time Machine.)

V/H/S/Beyond is being produced by Josh Goldbloom, James Harris, and Michael Schreiber, with Adam Boorstin serving as executive producer.

What did you think of the V/H/S/Beyond trailer? Are you a fan of this franchise, and will you be watching this new installment next month? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Last month, Joaquin Phoenix would make headlines. Not for his upcoming Joker sequel, but because Phoenix would exit from a Todd Haynes film about gay lovers just as it was about to go into production. Haynes’ film revolves around two men who are intense lovers and leave California for Mexico. The reason for Phoenix’s exit is unclear. Still, some have wondered if the project’s intimate and explicit content was a factor. While Phoenix was promoting Joker: Folie à Deux at the Venice Film Festival, he was asked briefly about the situation and replied, “If I do, I’d just be sharing my opinion from my perspective and the other creatives aren’t here to share their piece so I don’t think that would be helpful. So I won’t.”

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Christine Vachon, who was a producer on Haynes’ film, spoke about the ordeal at the San Sebastian Film Festival. Vachon stated, “The truth is, pretty much what happened is out there for all of you to see. If I had anything to gossip about it, I would, but I don’t. It was tragic. The most tragic part about it, in my mind, is Todd Hughes is 62. There’s a finite number of films that they’ll be able to do in his lifetime. I consider him one of the most extraordinary film artists of his generation.”

She continues, “The idea that his time was wasted and that a movie is not a result of those years of working closely with Joaquin, that is the tragedy to me and that I can’t get over. We, as a cultural community, lost an opportunity to have another movie by Todd Haynes. That is just criminal.” Vachon had also conveyed that the days following Phoenix’s exit had been “a nightmare.” No plans to recast have been announced.

As for Phoenix’s upcoming October release, Joker: Folie à Deux, director Todd Phillips recently talked about the unsettling feeling the movie will leave audiences with. “For the people that have seen this movie in general … at the end, they sit and they don’t move for about three to five minutes,” Phillips said. “Then they text me, the ones that know me, or email me and go, ‘I need a minute to process the movie.’” Phillips added, “I think it’s going to leave you with a very unsettling … I think it’s unsettling.”
