Month: September 2024

Matt Reeves take on The Batman brought us Colin Farrell. The actor blew me away. His performance as Oz Cobb/The Penguin was exceptional thanks to the many elements with it. It was a sublime introduction to an intriguing character. And I’m extremely happy that the Max TV series The Penguin, which follows the events of the 2022 film, is outstanding on every level. From the first episode, you get a sense of how deeply they explore every single character. Mr. Farrell gives one of his best performances. And frankly, this is one of the most complex and fascinating villain stories I’ve beyond enjoyed tuning into. You can check out Alex Maidy’s rave review here. In it, he calls it a masterpiece. I tend to agree.

I first had the opportunity to meet and interview Colin Farrell back with In Bruges. Throughout the years, I’ve grown to genuinely admire and respect him. Farrell is an exceptional talented actor. As well, he is a supremely kind human being with a generous and giving nature. As evidence, he created the Colin Farrell Foundation in hopes of making the lives of those with Intellectual Disabilities much easier “through education, advocacy, and innovative programs.” Something that means a whole lot.

For us at JoBlo we’d like to thank Mr. Farrell for an amazing chat. As always, it was wonderful to see him. A great actor, great human being, and someone I love talking to. As we began our conversation, Colin gave one of the best responses to any question regarding his hope that people enjoy The Penguin. He talked about bringing all of the elements together, and the amazing cast and crew that have gathered to tell this crime story. The man is one of my favorite guys in Hollywood. And one hell of a fantastic actor.

The Penguin premieres this Thursday, September 19th.

The stylish neo-noir thriller Magpie is set to play on the big screen in New York, Los Angeles, and select U.S. cities starting on October 25th, and with that theatrical release date just one month away, Shout! Studios has unveiled a poster and a trailer for the film. The trailer can be viewed in the embed above, and the poster can be found at the bottom of this article.

Directed by Sam Yates (VANYA, The Hope Rooms) from a screenplay by Tom Bateman (Murder on the Orient ExpressThirteen Lives) that was based on an original idea by star Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Magpie has the following synopsis: The lives of married couple Anette and Ben begin to fracture when their daughter is cast alongside a glamorous movie star, Alicia. As Anette’s suspicions of Ben’s infatuation with Alicia intensify, their secrets and lies threaten to burst to the surface and destroy them all.

Ridley plays Anette and is joined in the cast by Shazad Latif (Penny Dreadful) as Ben and Matilda Lutz (Revenge) as Alicia. Also in the cast are Pippa Bennett-Warner (Gangs of London), newcomer Hiba Ahmed, Cherrelle Skeete (The Midwich Cuckoos), Alistair Petrie (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Niall Wright (6Degrees), Jenny Galloway (Wicked Little Letters), Andy M Milligan (Dead Hot), Emmet Kirwan (Dublin Oldschool), Matthew Spencer (Trying), and Karel Bojan Hutter (Another God).

Magpie is coming our way from Align, in association with The Veterans, A Werewolf Films, and 55 Films. Ridley and Bateman produced with Kate Solomon, Camilla Bray, Nadia Khamlichi, and Sierra Garcia. Adrian Politowski, Martin Metz, Nessa McGill, and Clare Hardwick served as executive producers.

Ridley recently revealed that she has been diagnosed with Graves’ disease, with the symptoms first showing up while she was working on Magpie. She has a role in the survival thriller We Bury the Dead, which will be premiering soon, and she’s set to star in another Star Wars movie.

What did you think of the Magpie trailer? Does this look like a movie you’d like to watch next month? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

PLUS AN ALL-NEW POST-CREDIT SCENE

The new post-credit scene is an interesting announcement. It will likely be a tease for a future sequel as this film became one of the year’s few box office hits. The directors, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, have also said they’d like to make Bad Boys 5 a more international story. Fallah stated, “What we want [is] to go around the world with them.”

El Arbi added, “In every country we were imagining, how would Mike and Marcus be in France, or how would they be in the U.K., or how would they be in Dubai, or in Morocco, or in Africa, or in Asia? There’s a lot of interesting comedy that you could do with them. We’ve gotta push it to the next level in terms of action.” The directors added that they hadn’t heard anything about a potential sequel from Sony other than Tom Rothman emailing congratulations on the success of Ride or Die. If they return to direct Bad Boys 5, they will have directed more franchise installments than Michael Bay.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has dominated the box office the last two weekends, emerging as one of the year’s biggest blockbusters. However, its reign at the top of the box office heap seems bound to (maybe) end this weekend with the release of Paramount’s Transformers One. This animated prequel has to overcome the fact that some degree of franchise fatigue has started to set in, with Bumblebee, Transformers: The Last Knight and Rise of the Beasts all struggling to break even at the domestic box office, even if internationally, the grosses remain strong.

What makes Transformers One different is that this is a departure from live-action, with it being the first animated movie in the franchise since 1986’s Transformers: The Movie. The estimates for the film are relatively weak, with only a $30 million (or so) weekend looking likely. I personally loved the film (check out my review) and even got quoted in the final trailer. Here’s the thing – it’s going to have a soft opening. It’s just a fact. But word of mouth is going to be great. When I attended a word-of-mouth screening here in Montreal, the audience cheered when it ended. The last time I remember that happening was at Black Panther. The CinemaScore is going to be great, so hopefully, word of this great little animated flick will spread. However, it also has big competition next week with The Wild Robot (which is apparently also great).

Transformers One should be able to eke out a victory over Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, with that one looking at about $25 million this weekend, although it’s not impossible the sequel could repeat at the top of the charts

Third place should go to Lionsgate’s Never Let Go, which is looking at a modest $6 million weekend. The studio is suffering one of the worst runs at the box office in recent memory, and while Halle Berry’s star power might bring in an audience, I think horror fans are waiting until October to really get in the spirit of the spooky season. It could even get beaten by Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil in week 2.

Firth place is a total crapshoot. It could be Deadpool & Wolverine with about $3 million, but it could also go to Matt Walsh’s controversial Am I Racist, which made a surprising amount of money last weekend. I’m betting on Deadpool as I think that movie was front-loaded.

Here are my predictions:

  1. Transformers One: $30 million
  2. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: $25 million
  3. Never Let Go: $6 million
  4. Speak No Evil: $5 million
  5. Deadpool & Wolverine: $3 million

Emma Corrin

A seventh season of the anthology series Black Mirror will be making its way to the Netflix streaming service sometime in 2025 – and today, Netflix revealed the names of 19 Black Mirror season 7 cast members! Here’s the line-up: Awkwafina (Jackpot), Milanka Brooks (Mum and I Don’t Talk Anymore), Peter Capaldi (Doctor Who), Emma Corrin (Deadpool and Wolverine), Patsy Ferran (Firebrand), Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers), Lewis Gribben (Blade Runner 2099), Osy Ikhile (Citadel), Rashida Jones (Sunny), Siena Kelly (Domino Day), Billy Magnussen (Road House), Rosy McEwen (Blue Jean), Cristin Milioti (The Penguin), Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids), Issa Rae (Barbie), Paul G. Raymond (Horrible Histories), Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish), Jimmi Simpson (Westworld), and Harriet Walter (Succession). Information on the specific episodes they’ll be in and the characters they’ll be playing is being kept under wraps.

Black Mirror season 7 will consist of six episodes, one of which will be a sequel to the popular season 4 episode USS Callister! We even have a short synopsis for that one: “Robert Daly is dead, but for the crew of the USS Callister, their problems are just beginning.“ Directed by Toby Haynes from a script written by William Bridges and Brooker, the season 4 USS Callister episode told the story of a gaming company’s CTO. He is the mastermind behind a popular multiplayer game and has a private copy of it, which he uses to torment his colleagues who fail to show him respect in the office. The episode had a running time of 76 minutes and starred Jesse Plemons, Cristin Milioti, Billy Magnussen, Jimmi Simpson, Michaela Coel, Milanka Brooks, Osy Ikhile, Paul G. Raymond, Hammed Animashaun, Tom Mulheron, and Aaron Paul. Given that several of those actors are named on the season 7 cast list, we probably know which episode they’re appearing in…

Created and written by Brooker, Black Mirror is an anthology series that taps into our collective unease with the modern world, with each stand-alone episode a sharp, suspenseful tale exploring themes of contemporary techno-paranoia leading to an unforgettable – and sometimes unsettling – conclusion. Without questioning it, technology has transformed all aspects of our lives; in every home; on every desk; in every palm – a plasma screen; a monitor; a Smartphone – a Black Mirror reflecting our 21st Century existence back at us.

Coming our way from the Broke & Bones production company, Black Mirror season 7 is being executive produced by Brooker, Jessica Rhoades, and Annabel Jones.
