Deadline reports that Demián Bichir is set to join the cast of The Black Phone 2, the highly anticipated sequel to Scott Derrickson’s supernatural horror movie.
Exactly who Demián Bichir will play in The Black Phone 2 is being kept under wraps, but he joins original cast members Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and Miguel Mora, who are all returning for the sequel. Scott Derrickson is returning to direct, and he also co-wrote the script with C. Robert Cargill. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but I’m intrigued to see what the sequel will bring. The first film followed “Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, who is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.“
Joe Hill, who wrote the short story on which the film is based, knew a sequel would happen as soon as he saw the mask of The Grabber, the serial killer played by Ethan Hawke. “As soon as I saw the mask, which was designed by Tom Savini and Jason Baker, as soon as I saw the mask I thought, ‘If this film is a hit, there’ll be a sequel,’ because the mask is so iconic,” Hill said. “It is like Freddy Krueger’s glove, it is like Michael Myers’ mask, it is this thing where it’s the imagery, iconic imagery, that haunts people’s sleep. And, look, in horror, guys like Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger, and Frankenstein, and Dracula, none of these guys stay buried. They all claw their way out of the grave for a sequel and then a threequel.“
Bichir was recently seen starring alongside Salma Hayek in Without Blood. The film, which was written and directed by Angelina Jolie, follows a woman who comes face to face with the man who murdered her father and brother years ago but spared her life. Without Blood premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Universal has slated The Black Phone 2 for an October 17, 2025release.
Chad McQueen, best known for playing Dutch in The Karate Kid and The Karate Kid Part II, has died at the age of 63. He’s also the son of Steve McQueen, the legendary actor who starred in The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, Bullitt, and more.
In a statement to Variety, Chad’s wife, Jeanie, and his children, Chase and Madison, said, “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our father, Chad McQueen. His remarkable journey as a loving father to us, along with his unwavering commitment to our mother, truly exemplified a life filled with love and dedication. His passion for racing not only highlighted his exceptional talent but also served as a way to honor his father’s legacy, a testament to the values instilled in him. He passed his passion, knowledge and dedication down to us, and we will continue not only his legacy but our grandfather’s as well. As a family, we need to navigate this difficult time, and we kindly ask for privacy as we remember and celebrate his extraordinary life.“
McQueen’s character in The Karate Kid was one of the members of Cobra Kai who frequently threatens Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio). There had been talk of him reprising the role in the Cobra Kai TV series, but he reportedly turned down the offer. In addition to the Karate Kid movies, McQueen also appeared in Fever Pitch, Martial Law, Death Ring, Jimmy Hollywood, and Red Line.
However, McQueen’s true passion was racing, an interest he inherited from his father. When he was just 10 years old, his father was shooting Le Mans. He would sit on his father’s lap at the wheel of a Porsche 917 as it sped around at triple-digit speed. Two years later, he won his class at the World Mini Grand Prix. He went on to have a successful career in racing and founded McQueen Racing, which develops high-performance cars and motorcycles. Unfortunately, he had a near-fatal crash years ago while practicing for the 24 Hours of Daytona race at the Daytona International Speedway. He suffered a broken leg, fractures to his vertebrae, and multiple rib fractures. According to TMZ, his longtime attorney, Arthur Barens, said this injury led to progressive organ failure and contributed to his death.
Our condolences go out to Chad McQueen’s family and friends. Safe travels.
After the debut of Tulsa King, it was revealed that showrunner Terence Winter would be stepping down, reportedly due to creative differences with creator Taylor Sheridan. Fans were disappointed. After all, the man who was involved in The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, and The Wolf of Wall Street was a big asset to the crime series. Then, just one year later, Winter surprisingly returned to Tulsa King for the second season.
While speaking with Deadline, Winter explained why he decided to come back to Tulsa King. “Because I love it. I love working with Sly. I love the cast, the crew, and we got to the point where we solved whatever creative … we all got on the same page creatively, I think,” Winter said. “And the fact that I got the opportunity to continue, I was absolutely not going to pass that up. It’s so much fun to do. And yeah, working with Sly and this group of actors has been one of the highlights, so I was so thrilled we were able to work that out.“
As for how his role on the series has changed, Winter said, “It’s changed in the sense that I’m much more focused on the writing than being on set and producing. We brought on a wonderful producing director this year, Craig Zisk. So that took a lot of those duties away from me, and it was really more about working directly with Sly and the writers. So in that sense, it changed. I did go out to Atlanta a couple of times where we were shooting this year and was involved with casting and that sort of stuff, but for the most part I kind of stayed put and just focused on the writing, which is really what I want to do.“
The official synopsis for Tulsa King season 2: “Dwight (Stallone) and his crew continue to build up and defend their growing empire in Tulsa, but just as they get their bearings, they realize that they’re not the only ones who want to stake their claim. With looming threats from the Kansas City mob and a very powerful local businessman, Dwight struggles to keep his family and crew safe while keeping track of all his affairs. Plus, he still has unfinished business back in New York.” The new season will premiere on Paramount+ on September 15th.

We’ve seen plenty of musical biopics over the years, so it’s somewhat surprising that we’ve never seen one about KISS, the iconic rock band formed by Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss. A KISS biopic has been in development for several years, but it’s been slow going. However, Deadline reports that it’s taking a big leap forward as McG (Terminator Salvation) is in final negotiations to direct Shout It Out Loud.
Shout It Out Loud is set to be produced by STX Entertainment, and Deadline reports that the studio is talking with Lionsgate to co-finance the project and distribute it worldwide. Darren Lemke (Shazam!) penned the most recent draft of the script. The project was initially going to be set up at Netflix with Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tale) directing, but it seems it went back on the market. Shout It Out Loud will focus on bandleaders Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, who are working closely with the production, as it goes all the way back to when two misfit kids from Queens formed an unlikely friendship and started Kiss and enlisted guitarist Ace Frehley and drummer Peter Criss.
McG is currently in production on Way of the Warrior Kid, an adaptation of the children’s novel by retired Navy SEAL, Jocko Willink. “Fifth grade was the worst year of Marc’s life. He stunk at gym class, math was too hard for him, the school lunch was horrible, and his class field trip was ruined because he couldn’t swim. But what was most awful thing about fifth grade? Kenny Williamson, the class bully, who calls himself the ‘King of the Jungle,’” reads the novel’s description. “When Marc’s mother tells him that his Uncle Jake is coming to stay for the whole summer, Marc can’t wait. Uncle Jake is a for real, super-cool Navy SEAL. And Uncle Jake has a plan. He’s going to turn Marc into a warrior. Becoming a warrior isn’t easy. It means a lot of pull ups, sit ups, pushups, squats, swimming, eating right, and studying harder than ever before! Can Marc transform himself into a warrior before school starts in the fall – and finally stand up to the King of the Jungle himself?” The film, which stars Chris Pratt, is being produced for Apple and Skydance.
Once McG finishes that project, he will move forward with Shout It Out Loud, which is expected to start production in the second quarter of 2025.
Now, who in Hollywood has the tongue to play Gene Simmons in the KISS biopic?
