Bruce Campbell

When Sam Raimi signed on to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it was pretty much a given that he was going to give his longtime friend and Evil Dead franchise star Bruce Campbell a cameo somewhere in the film, just like he had Campbell appear in each one of the Spider-Man movies he directed. (Campbell was a ring announcer in the first Spider-Man, a theater usher in the second, and a maître d’ in the third). Sure enough, Campbell showed up in the Doctor Strange movie as a character called Pizza Poppa – and in interviews given since then, Campbell has stated that not only his Pizza Poppa a variant of his Spider-Man character(s), but he also has a future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

Over a year after the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Campbell told ComicBook.com, “The cameos are like, in the Spider-Man movies — if you know anything about the multiverse, you know now, retroactively, I’m in the multiverse now because of Doctor Strange. I’m not a pizza vendor, okay? That would be a massive mistake to think I’m just a pizza vendor, or an usher, or a ring announcer, or a maître d’. It’s called the multiverse, my friend. So, yes, he is the same character, but we don’t know who he really is. It has not been revealed yet. I just got off the phone with the guys at Marvel, and we’re getting close to finding out.Spider-Man: No Way Home did open portals in the multiverse that allowed the MCU’s Spider-Man (played by Tom Holland) to interact with Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man from the Amazing Spider-Man movies and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man from Raimi’s trilogy – and if Maguire’s Spidey is out there, so are (or so is) the Campbell character(s) he interacted with.

In a new interview with Variety, Campbell added, “I play the Pizza Poppa, but ask yourself: Really? In the Marvel timeline, I’m just a Pizza Poppa? Please don’t kid yourself. My contract is that thick for that movie. You think I’d sign a contract that thick for that simple little throwaway character? What did I do in that movie? I delayed Doctor Strange. I didn’t defeat him, we didn’t fight. I delayed him from what? Did I just save Doctor Strange’s life? The Marvel world really is just starting and, again, I can only comment so much.

Of course, Campbell is just kidding around about all of this, but it would be great to see him go on to play a more substantial role in the MCU somehow. And if Sam Raimi does come back for Doctor Strange 3, as is rumored, chances are good that Campbell will be showing up in that film as well. In the meantime, we’ll get to watch him on the Peacock series Hysteria!

Peacemaker, James Gunn, Season 2

Gather ’round the campfire, Peacemaker fans, and join me for a guessing game in which we will try to identify a new character coming to the second season of DC and Max‘s Peacemaker series. James Gunn took time out of his busy schedule on Wednesday to tease fans of the John Cena-led series with an image that’s as dark as it is mysterious. In the photo, a buff individual sits with their back turned to the camera, a blazing campfire illuminating their chiseled physique. The character’s braided grey hair dangles from their skull as feathers attached to their bulging biceps dance against a brisk wind. With little else to give us clues about their identity, the game is afoot, and Peacemaker Season 2 is closer than you think.

According to online detectives, many believe the character is Long Shadow, a former member of the Ultimen and an update to the Native American superhero Apache Chief from the Super Friends. Project Cadmus genetically engineered Long Shadow to serve the U.S. government, which is… yeah. Meanwhile, one Twitter user jokes the character could be Nightwolf, a character introduced in the Mortal Kombat 3 video game. Nightwolf feels unlikely, regardless of DC teaming up with Mortal Kombat for the fan-favorite DC vs. Mortal Kombat game franchise.

When James Gunn’s Superman production was in full swing, the DC Studios chief said he was working on scripts for Peacemaker Season 2 during downtime. According to Gunn, the show’s transition from the defunct DCEU to the shiny new DCU “won’t be confusing.” When asked why he didn’t make a different show to avoid bewilderment, Gunn said, “Because it’s my favorite thing to do, it’s the biggest original Max show ever, and I have a way in. It won’t be confusing.”

What do you make of today’s Peacemaker Season 2 tease? Is that Long Shadow roasting marshmallows in the middle of the woods, or does Gunn have another character up his sleeve? Although Gunn enjoys threading the needle when presenting the unexpected, Apache Chief and Long Shadow are controversial characters. Is Gunn willing to wade into those dark waters? We’ll keep our eyes peeled for confirmation about the character’s identity.

Anything for Jackson

Justin G. Dyck has almost 40 directing credits to his name, and most of those credits have been on TV movie romances with titles like Christmas Wedding Planning, Christmas with a View, A Very Country Wedding, and Art of Falling in Love… but recently, Dyck has been shifting gears. In 2020, he brought us the supernatural horror movie Anything for Jackson (pictured above), which was released through the Shudder streaming service. He went on to contribute to episodes of Shudder’s Creepshow series. Last month, we heard he will be directing the horror film The Casket Girls, starring Gabrielle Union. Now, Deadline reports that Dyck will be directing the haunted house movie William for Aperture Entertainment.

William is an adaptation of a novel by Andrew Pyper, which was written under the author’s sci-fi/thriller pen name Mason Coile. Pyper is writing the screenplay with Chris Sivertson, whose previous writing credits include The Image of You, Wicked Lake, Marauders, Sorority Sister Killer, and Margaux. Sivertson also directed The Lost, All Cheerleaders Die, I Know Who Killed Me, and Monstrous, among other films.

William is said to be a contained sci-fi horror film that blends the worlds of Ex Machina and The Amityville Horror, set in a timely haunted house story in which the haunting is AI. Here’s the book’s description: Henry is a brilliant engineer who, after untold hours spent in his home lab, has achieved the breakthrough of his career—he’s created an artificially intelligent consciousness. He calls the half-formed robot William. No one knows about William. Henry’s agoraphobia keeps him inside the house, and his fixation on his project keeps him up in the attic, away from everyone, including his pregnant wife, Lily. When Lily’s coworkers show up, wanting to finally meet Henry and see the new house—the smartest of smart homes—Henry decides to introduce them to William, and things go from strange to much worse. Soon Henry and Lily discover the security upgrades intended to keep danger out of the house are even better at locking it in.

Copies of the novel can be purchased at THIS LINK.

Alyssa Limperis

The sixth season of the FX series What We Do in the Shadows will also be the show’s last. The final batch of episodes are scheduled to start airing on October 21st at 10 p.m. ET/PT… and fans will have the chance to watch the first three episodes that night! The remaining eight episodes of the 11-episode season will be released on a weekly basis, and will be available to stream the next day on Hulu. They’ll be available to stream internationally on Disney+ at a later date. When the new episodes do air, viewers will be introduced to a new character: someone named Lisa, who “works in a corporate environment,” and today Deadline revealed that Lisa will be played by comedian Alyssa Limperis.

Limperis’ previous credits include Flatbush MisdemeanorsThe List, Aunty Donna’s House, and Too Late. She also voices multiple characters on the Cartoon Network show We Baby Bears. Deadline notes that she is best known for her viral mom videos and also has an hourlong comedy special about losing her dad called No Bad Days on Peacock.

A spin-off from Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s horror-comedy mockumentary film of the same title, What We Do in the Shadows centers on three vampires who live together: Laszlo (Matt Berry), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), and Nandor (Kayvan Novak) — the former two are husband and wife. Also living with them is a fourth vampire named Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), who’s an “energy vampire.” Instead of blood, he sucks the energy out of his victims by boring them to death with mundane anecdotes and bad jokes. The office is his feeding ground, but his powers also work on his vampire roomies.

Limperis joins a cast that includes Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou, Harvey Guillen, Mark Proksch, and Kristen Schaal.

Here’s the official synopsis for season 6: After a very brief stint as a full-blown vampire, Guillermo is re-evaluating his life. Who is he if not a familiar who will do anything to please his Master in hopes of one day being turned into a vampire? Meanwhile, the vampires are reevaluating, too. When their former roommate reappears after a 50-year nap, they realize how little they’ve done in half a century — not one goal accomplished, not one dream pursued, not one part of the New World conquered (except for their street and part of Ashley Street).

What We Do in the Shadows is executive produced by Taika Waititi, Jemaine Clement, Paul Simms, Scott Rudin, Eli Bush, and Garrett Basch.

Three years have gone by since it was announced that Edgar Wright was coming on board to direct a new take on the novel The Running Man, which was written by Stephen King under his Richard Bachman pen name. The Running Man was, of course, previously turned into a film back in 1987 that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and had little to do with the source material. Earlier this year, it was announced that Glen Powell of Top Gun: MaverickHit Man, and Twisters is following in the footsteps of Schwarzenegger to play the lead role in the new adaptation – and now we’re starting to hear the names of some of his co-stars. Last week, it was announced that Katy O’Brian, who had a breakthrough role in Love Lies Bleeding and shared the screen with Powell in Twisters, had signed on to play one of the contestants in the film. Now, Deadline has reported that Daniel Ezra, who played the character Spencer James on 106 episodes of the CW series All American, has also joined the cast. Details on his character were not revealed.

King’s novel has the following description: It was the ultimate death game in a nightmare future America. The year is 2025 and reality TV has grown to the point where people are willing to wager their lives for a chance at a billion-dollar jackpot. Ben Richards is desperate – he needs money to treat his daughter’s illness. His last chance is entering a game show called The Running Man where the goal is to avoid capture by Hunters who are employed to kill him. Surviving this month-long chase is another issue when everyone else on the planet is watching – and willing to turn him in for the reward.

During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast last year, Wright said he was drawn to The Running Man because, “I like the film but I like the book more, and they didn’t really adapt the book. Even as a teenager when I saw the Schwarzenegger film I was like, ‘Oh, this isn’t like the book at all!’ And I think, ‘Nobody’s [done] that book.’ So when that came up, I was thinking, and Simon Kinberg says, ‘Do you have any interest in The Running Man?’ I said, ‘You know what? I’ve often thought that that book is something crying out to be adapted.’ Now, that doesn’t mean that it’s easy! [Laughs] But it’s something that we are working on, yes.”

Wright is directing The Running Man from a script he co-wrote with Michael Bacall and is producing the film with Nira Park and Simon Kinberg.
