crazy rich asians

Crazy Rich Asians captured the Chinese culture like no Hollywood production had in decades, garnering an immediate fanbase that propelled it to box office success and awards recognition, even getting Golden Globe and SAG nods. With that, it’s no wonder sequel talk was on the table. But director Jon M. Chu isn’t going to do it just to get people back in theaters, he’s going to do it because a Crazy Rich Asians sequel has to matter.

Speaking with Deadline, Chu said he doesn’t want to waste the cast’s time without giving it all for a Crazy Rich Asian sequel, but he has good reason for that. “I won’t bring everyone back unless it’s worth it. There’s too much on the line for everybody.” He added, “I want the best thing. I want it to be worthy of what Crazy Rich Asians 1 was. We’ve tried all different versions. It’s hard because people think the first movie is like the book, but it actually is not. It’s the right spirit, but the plotting is very different. And so, you can’t just go and translate. And we’ve tried versions and the fact is, is that we just haven’t gotten there…And there’s no way I’m dragging the audience back. There’s no way the bar is too high. So, in time when we get there, we will.”

Word on a Crazy Rich Asians sequel has been circulating for a while now, with the plan being to adapt the second book in Kevin Kwan’s series, China Rich Girlfriend. That could then open the door for Rich People Problems, which concluded his trilogy back in 2017.

But with so much time resting between the release of 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians and now, one wonders if the heart for a sequel fully there or not, or if the time and focus on perfecting it will get in the way of a timelier release. Word came not that long ago that filming would take place in early 2025, but honestly, Chu doesn’t seem all that enthusiastic about returning, which might not necessarily be a bad thing. Even though the book has built-in sequels, is it totally necessary to complete it on the big screen? Why bother trying to capture that again when there could be so many other stories of Asian culture to tell?

Do you think Crazy Rich Asians will ever get its sequel? Does it even need one?

Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Lance Reddick, Courtney B. Vance

Emmy winner Courtney B. Vance is taking over the late (and great) Lance Reddick’s role as Zeus for Disney’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Lance Reddick passed away in March of 2023 from coronary artery disease and atherosclerotic heart disease, leaving behind a legacy many actors can only aspire to. Courtney B. Vance is honored to fill Reddick’s shoes for the live-action Disney series, posting the following message for fans to consider:

“I can’t tell you how excited I am to join the extraordinary cast of Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” Vance said in a statement. “There are few moments in an actor’s career when you can honestly say that you’re about to board a series that has such a devoted fan base filled with characters beloved around the world and is based on a wildly successful book series. I know that stepping into this role of Zeus will be a memorable experience and I’ll be giving my brother, Lance Reddick, who left us way too soon, a heavenly hug.”

The sophomore season for Percy Jackson and the Olympians is currently in production, with multiple actors assuming exciting roles, including Daniel Diemer, Tamara Smart, and Andra Day, with guest stars Sandra Bernhard, Margaret Cho, and Kristen Schall.

In season two of Percy Jackson and the Olympians “Percy Jackson returns to Camp Half-Blood one year later to find his world turned upside down. His friendship with Annabeth is changing, he learns he has a cyclops for a brother, Grover has gone missing, and camp is under siege from the forces of Kronos. Percy’s journey to set things right will take him off the map and into the deadly Sea of Monsters, where a secret fate awaits the son of Poseidon.”

In August, Disney debuted a first look at Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2, featuring a more mature (and older-sounding) Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson. The preview teases a descent into the depths, where monsters and other ungodly creatures await. Anticipation for the upcoming season is through the roof as Disney+ subscribers continue to rewatch the show’s first season and anticipate any updates about new episodes. Today’s news about Courtney B. Vance joining the cast of Percy Jackson and the Olympians should give them plenty to think about.

We had heard that director Rhys Frake-Waterfield and producer Scott Jeffrey Chambers were planning to create a cinematic universe with the Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey films and other horror movies inspired by children’s stories, like Peter Pan’s Neverland NightmareBambi: The Reckoning, and Pinocchio Unstrung. Then, Jagged Edge Productions and ITN Studios officially announced that this cinematic universe, which is being referred to as The Twisted Childhood Universe, is building up to the crossover movie Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble, which will be released in 2025. Now, Deadline has confirmed that Martin Portlock, who plays Peter Pan in Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, will be reprising the role in Poohniverse.

The confirmation of Portlock’s involvement comes in Deadline’s report that Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble has secured distribution deals in in Latin America (BF Distribution), Germany and Italy (Plaion), the UK (Altitude), Benelux (ND Pictures), France (Factoris), Australia and New Zealand (Umbrella), Turkey (BG Films), Russia/CIS (Voxell), Japan (New Select), Taiwan (Movie Cloud), Malaysia (Mega Films), Mongolia (Filmbridge), and Pakistan (Cine Entertainment). ITN will handle distribution in North America. Filming is expected to begin in March.

Frake-Waterfield will be directing the crossover film from a screenplay he wrote with Chambers. It was previously confirmed that the cast will include Chambers as Christopher Robin, Megan Plactio as Wendy Darling, Roxanne Mckee as Xana, and Lewis Santer as Tigger.

Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare and Bambi: The Reckoning are set to receive theatrical releases in the first quarter of 2025, with Pinocchio Unstrung likely to follow later in the year, so we’ll be introduced to all of the horrific characters well before Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble makes it to screens.

Frake-Waterfield explains, “It will be complete carnage. We are heavily influenced by Freddy vs. Jason and The Avengers. We would love to see a horror movie where the villains group together and are going after their survivors. We have some incredible set pieces in mind and some sequences I think will truly shock people. The movies we are working on now as stand alones are all building towards Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble.

Chambers added, “Similar to The Avengers, we will follow Pooh, Tigger, Rabbit, Owl, Piglet, Pinocchio, Sleeping Beauty, Bambi, The Mad Hatter, Peter Pan, and Tinkerbell joining forces to wreak havoc. We are working with a larger scale budget on this one and are excited for what the future will hold. When you see the stand alone movies you will see the easter eggs hinting toward the crossover. Some of the villains also will not see eye to eye, which will allow for some carnage within the group in some epic sequences of monster vs. monster.

Are you looking forward to Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble and to seeing Martin Portlock’s Peter Pan cross paths with the likes of Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, and Pinocchio? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
