David Corenswet, Superman, James Gunn

Beyond a couple of photos, we haven’t been able to see David Corenswet in action as Superman, but James Gunn is confident that the actor will blow us away. While chatting with THR about the upcoming Creature Commandos series, Gunn was asked about the Superman movie and was full of praise for his leading man.

Superman is an enormous bear of a movie. It’s completely different from [Creature Commandos] in every way, but it’s very much fantastic as well,” Gunn said. “Honestly, from the bottom of my heart, David Corenswet is going to freak everyone out with how great he is. He is one of the best actors I’ve ever worked with, and he can do everything. The man is incredible.”

Hopefully, we’ll get to see some footage soon. THR’s report mentions that Gunn is currently test-screening Superman, and some believe that we might see the first teaser trailer by the end of the year. Fingers crossed.

Superman stars David Corenswet (Pearl) as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Ms. Maisel) as Lois Lane. The cast also includes Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Guy Gardner, a charismatic and slightly obnoxious member of the Green Lantern Corps; Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as Mister Terrific; Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho; María Gabriela de Faría (Deadly Class) as The Engineer, a member of The Authority; Sara Sampaio (At Midnight) as Eve Teschmacher; Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones) as Jimmy Olsen; Wendell Pierce (The Wire) as Perry White; Neva Howell (Logan Lucky) as Martha Kent; Pruitt Taylor-Vince (The Walking Dead) as Jonathan Kent; and Nicholas Hoult (The Great) as Lex Luthor.

The members of the Daily Planet newsroom have also expanded for the movie, with Beck Bennet (Saturday Night Live) set to play Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover (The Suicide Squad) as Cat Grant, and newcomer Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe.

DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has previously teased that Superman will not be an origin story and will focus on “Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned.Superman is slated to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

As for Creature Commandos, the first two episodes of the animated series will debut on Max on December 5th. You can check out a glowing review from our own Steve Seigh right here.

HBO, release, Euphoria season 3, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

A new year brings new projects, and HBO has revealed when some of our favourites will be back. During a tech and media conference hosted by Wells Fargo, Warner Bros. Discovery global streaming chief JB Perrette teased release dates for some of their biggest shows, including Euphoria, The White Lotus, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and more.

The third season of The White Lotus will be up first, as Perrette said the show will return in February 2025. The Last of Us season 2 will premiere in spring 2025, followed by the launch of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in summer 2025. However, Variety notes that the Game of Thrones prequel will more than likely end up to be a “fourth-quarter title.

Unfortunately, the wait for the third season of Euphoria continues as the acclaimed series isn’t expected to debut until 2026. Production on Euphoria season 3 will kick off in January 2025, and despite reports of a further delay, HBO boss Casey Bloys told Variety last month that everything was still on track. “We are shooting Euphoria,” Bloys said. “I think we have a start date, mid to late January. Nothing’s changed. Somebody said something online, and then this whole thing started. We are shooting the season. I have read the scripts. We’re happy. We’re moving ahead. All of the actors are in the show.

Looking even further ahead, Perrette indicated that the upcoming Harry Potter TV series might be delayed. The series was previously looking at launching in 2026, but it may be pushed into 2027. “As you look at ’26 and into ’27, you begin a 10-year journey on the ‘Harry Potter’ series, which we’re super excited about,” Perrette said. “And I’d argue, may be the biggest event by the time we get to that series.

The casting process for the Harry Potter TV series has begun. An open call was put out for children who are residents of the U.K. and Ireland and will be between the ages of 9 and 11 in April 2025 to play Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger. “We are committed to inclusive, diverse casting,” the notice reads. “For every role, please submit qualified performers, without regard to ethnicity, sex, disability, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other basis protected by law unless otherwise specifically indicated.

Martin Starr, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle remake

THR reports that Martin Starr (Tulsa King) is set to join Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Ahsoka) and Maika Monroe (Longlegs) in the upcoming remake of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. Raúl Castillo (Smile 2) will also appear in the film.

The 20th Century Studios project is a new take on the 1992 thriller, which starred Rebecca De Mornay and Anna Bella Sciorra. When Claire Bartel (Sciorra) is assaulted by her doctor, she reports him to the police, but he kills himself to avoid being arrested. The doctor’s pregnant wife, Peyton (De Mornay), has a miscarriage and is driven mad with rage. Posing as a nanny for the Bartel family, she decides to tear Claire’s life apart by seducing her husband and murdering her. Monroe will be playing the De Mornay role in the remake, while Winstead will be stepping into the Sciorra role.

Martin Starr will be playing a neighbour whom Winstead’s character will turn to for help. Raúl Castillo will play Winstead’s husband. Michelle Garza Cervera (Homecoming) will direct the remake of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, based on a script by Micah Bloomberg (Sanctuary).

Starr can currently be seen starring alongside Sylvester Stallone in Tulsa King. He plays Lawrence “Bodhi” Geigerman, a marijuana dealer who is recruited into Dwight Manfredi’s (Stallone) crew. The second season wrapped up on Paramount+ last month, and Stallone has been inking a new deal for two more seasons.

The official synopsis for Tulsa King season 2: “Dwight (Stallone) and his crew continue to build up and defend their growing empire in Tulsa, but just as they get their bearings, they realize that they’re not the only ones who want to stake their claim. With looming threats from the Kansas City mob and a very powerful local businessman, Dwight struggles to keep his family and crew safe while keeping track of all his affairs. Plus, he still has unfinished business back in New York.

Our own Alex Maidy is a fan of the new season, saying it’s “as good if not better” than the first. “This new season further distinguishes itself from other Taylor Sheridan-created series rather than getting lumped in as another show from the guy who made Yellowstone,” Maidy wrote. “Tulsa King is violent, funny, and the best mob series to hit the air since The Sopranos.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.

quick and the dead

Picture this: you’ve introduced the world to a revolutionary horror-comedy franchise but still haven’t quite cracked the mainstream. Then along comes Sharon Stone – and we’re talking 1990s Sharon Stone – who is such a fan of your oddball movies that she personally approves you as director for a western starring herself and Leonardo DiCaprio. You’d think you’d be grateful for being ushered into the scene, but according to Sharon Stone, Sam Raimi – director of The Quick and the Dead – has never acknowledged the help.

Sharon Stone, who also served as producer of The Quick and the Dead, is taking credit for putting Sam Raimi on the map. “I had my great Italian cinematographer Dante Spinotti, and I was very blessed to produce [The Quick and the Dead] and to have the opportunity to cast this film. The director Sam Raimi, who I had an opportunity to bring from B movies to A movies, and then he directed Spider-Man and became a very big A movie director.” She also seemed to be patting her own back as far as her fellow cast goes. “I brought Russell Crowe from Australia [pre-Gladiator]. I had the opportunity to cast Leo DiCaprio [pre-Titanic] and bring him into a big leading role…” OK, we’ll give her and the Crowe claim, but DiCaprio had an Oscar nomination by that point and so was well on his way to getting a lead role. Even still, for his part, DiCaprio has shown gratitude for casting him.

Elaborating on her grudge with her The Quick and the Dead director, Stone feels even nearly 30 years on that she was never properly thanked. “In Sam Raimi’s case, I really liked his films. I thought he was very intelligent and very funny — different from [Casino director] Marty Scorsese, because he’s Italian, he has loyalty, he has that family feeling, and because of it Marty and I still have a relationship and because of it Marty and I still work together. Sam was a kid and he doesn’t have loyalty, he doesn’t have family, he didn’t ever talk to me again, he didn’t thank me, he didn’t hire me again, he didn’t acknowledge the relationship…”

While it’s pretty unfair to compare directors like that, one does wonder if Sam Raimi fully recognizes (at least in public) the potential that helming The Quick and the Dead presented for him. Sure, the movie flopped at the box office, but Raimi would next director A Simple Plan, a fantastic movie that showed true growth as a filmmaker. And we all know what happened from there, as Stone was quick herself to point out.

What do you think? Do you think Sam Raimi owes anything to Sharon Stone for The Quick and the Dead or did it not have that level of impact?

Wicked, porn lawsuit

While Wicked is continuing its box-office domination, a piece of Mattel merchandise from the movie has prompted a multi-million dollar lawsuit over an inadvertent porn connection. Uh oh.

After buying a Wicked doll for her young daughter, Holly Ricketson discovered that the website on the packaging didn’t take her to anything related to the movie but rather a pornographic website. “After opening the box that contained the Wicked Doll, Plaintiff’s minor daughter used an iPhone to visit the website shown on Defendant’s packaging,” reads the filing. “To her absolute shock, the website, ‘Wicked.com’, had nothing to do with the Wicked Doll. Rather, Wicked.com pasted scenes of pornographic advertisements across her phone screen.

The filing continues: “These scenes were hardcore, full on nude pornographic images depicting actual intercourse, and can be available for an in-camera review by the court as necessary. Plaintiff’s minor daughter immediately showed her mother the photographs and both were horrified by what they saw. If Plaintiff had been aware of such an inappropriate defect in the Product, she would not have purchased it.

Mattel pulled the dolls off shelves last month, saying: “We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this. Parents are advised that the misprinted, incorrect website is not appropriate for children. Consumers who already have the product are advised to discard the product packaging or obscure the link and may contact Mattel Customer Service for further information.” However, Ricketson says Mattel didn’t offer a “refund for consumers who had already purchased the dolls.

Wicked is now playing in theaters, and despite not being much of a Broadway musical fan, our own Chris Bumbray found a lot to like. “While I’ll admit that there were a handful of moments where I felt I was missing some kind of in-joke for fans of the play, overall, I had a pretty good time with Jon M. Chu’s Wicked – Part I,” Bumbray wrote. “Certainly, it’s one of the better modern versions of The Wizard of Oz, far more entertaining than Sam Raimi’s largely forgotten Oz: The Great and Powerful. Chu seems to have a knack for movie musicals, and with Universal clearly pumping a pretty penny into it, it feels like the kind of big, broad fantasy epic that should be able to crossover beyond its core audience of Broadway enthusiasts.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.

I Know What You Did Last Summer

There’s a new sequel to the 1997 slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer (watch it HERE) and its 1998 follow-up I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (watch that one HERE) coming our way from director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) – and the project’s official X account has just unveiled a behind-the-scenes image to announce that production is underway!

The image shows a clapperboard for the filming of scene 50B, which involves a computer monitor that looks like it’s left over from the ’90s and a hook that has a slightly different design than the hooks we saw in the previous movies:

Robinson is directing the film from a screenplay by Leah McKendrick (M.F.A.), which has received some rewrites from Robinson and journalist Sam Lansky. McKendrick told Collider a while back that the new sequel will reckon with “some big ideas about hero and villain, right and wrong, how your skeletons come back to haunt you. And in the age of the internet and the age where fame is such a revered concept, the creation of TikTok and social media, who is Julie James in a world where there are no secrets anymore?“ McKendrick also said that when she went in to pitch her take to Sony, the most important things they wanted to hear about were “the accident, the event that kicks it off, and who the killer is.

The new I Know What You Did Last Summer stars Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks), Sarah Pidgeon (Tiny Beautiful Things), Tyriq Withers (Atlanta), Jonah Hauer-King (The Little Mermaid), Billy Campbell (The Rocketeer), Lola Tung (The Summer I Turned Pretty), Nicholas Alexander Chavez (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story), Austin Nichols (The Day After Tomorrow), and model / musician Gabbriette, who will be making her feature film acting debut. Robinson’s Do Revenge star Camila Mendes (Riverdale) was attached at one time, but had to drop out due to scheduling issues. It appears that she has been replaced by Chase Sui Wonders (Bodies Bodies Bodies). I Know What You Did Last Summer and I Still Know What You Did Last Summer cast member Freddie Prinze Jr. recently signed on to reprise the role of Ray Bronson, while Jennifer Love Hewitt (who played heroine Julie James in the first two films) has been in negotiations to appear in the film.

I Know What You Did Last Summer was directed by Jim Gillespie from a screenplay by Kevin Williamson that was inspired by a Lois Duncan novel. The film has the following synopsis: A year after running over a fisherman and dumping his body in the water, four friends reconvene when Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) receives a frightening letter telling her that their crime was seen. While pursuing who he thinks is responsible for the letter, Barry (Ryan Phillippe) is run over by a man with a meat hook. The bloodletting only increases from there, as the killer with the hook continues to stalk Julie, Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.).

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer was directed by Danny Cannon from a screenplay by Trey Callaway. The synopsis: A year after killing vengeful hit-and-run victim Ben Wills (Muse Watson), who gutted her friends with an iron hook, college student Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) is still shaken by the experience. When her roommate, Karla (Brandy), wins a vacation for four to the Bahamas, she plans to bring along her boyfriend, Tyrell (Mekhi Phifer), attractive Will (Matthew Settle) and Julie. At the resort, Julie starts receiving threatening notes and realizes Ben is still alive.
