Dexter, prequel spinoff, Trinity Killer, John Lithgow, Michael C. Hall

The Dexter universe is growing larger by the second. Dexter: Original Sin is currently telling the origins of the young serial killer, but another prequel series could soon follow. Deadline reports that a prequel series revolving around the Trinity Killer (played by John Lithgow in the original series) is still “in development” at Paramount+.

The Trinity Killer prequel series was actually reported to be in condition in early 2023, but it’s been a long time since we’ve heard anything about it. Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips and Dexter writer/producer Scott Reynolds will serve as co-creators and executive producers of the Trinity Killer prequel series. Phillips even revealed that John Lithgow has agreed to come back and provide the inner voice of his younger self, much in the same way Michael C. Hall is doing for Dexter: Original Sin.

We wrote the entire Trinity Killer series. At the moment, it is on the back burner,” Phillips said. “John Lithgow has agreed to be the voice of his younger self the way Michael Hall is doing for [Original Sin]. There’s that and we’re doing another show with Michael C. Hall, [Resurrection]… We were writing that while shooting Original Sin, so that’s fairly busy. We begin shooting [Resurrection] in January and it will air in June 2025.

It doesn’t sound like the Trinity Killer prequel is a big priority at the moment, but if Dexter: Original Sin and Dexter: Resurrection can keep the franchise momentum going, we’ll probably see it on our screens. John Lithgow was featured in the fourth season of the original Dexter series and is regarded as one of the show’s best villains. He also made a very brief appearance in the revival series Dexter: New Blood.

The official synopsis for Dexter: Original Sin reads: “Set in 1991 Miami, Dexter: Original Sin follows Dexter (Gibson) as he transitions from student to avenging serial killer. When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry (Christian Slater), he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcement’s radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.” The series also stars Patrick Dempsey, Molly Brown, James Martinez, Christina Milian, Alex Shimizu, and Reno Wilson, with Sarah Michelle Gellar appearing as a special guest star. Yellowstone finale, ratings

The long-awaited finale of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone aired last week and broke a major ratings record. According to a press release, the final episode was watched by 13.1 million total viewers, making it the biggest episode in the series’ history. The second half of the fifth season was also the most-watched Yellowstone season on social media, with 619 million engagements—a 55% increase compared to the first half of the season.

The Yellowstone finale has concluded the tale of the Dutton family—but wait, not really. There are plenty of Yellowstone projects in development, including a potential spinoff series featuring Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly returning as Rip and Beth. There’s also The Madison, which has some serious star power behind it. Michelle Pfeiffer is set to star in and executive produce the new show, which follows a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana. Per Paramount, the series is described as “a heartfelt study of grief and human connection.

Michelle Pfeiffer is a remarkable talent who imbues every role with emotional depth, authenticity and grace. She is the perfect anchor to the newest chapter of the ’Yellowstone’ universe, ’The Madison,’ from the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan,” said Chris McCarthy, Paramount Global co-CEO and the president and CEO of Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios. The cast also includes Matthew Fox, Patrick J. Adams, Elle Chapman, Beau Garrett, and Amiah Miller.

The second season of Yellowstone prequel series 1923 starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren will debut on Paramount+ on February 23, 2025. Here’s the official synopsis: “In the second season of 1923, a cruel winter brings new challenges and unfinished business to Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Cara (Helen Mirren) back at Dutton ranch. With harsh conditions and adversaries threatening to end the Dutton legacy, Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) embarks on an arduous journey home, racing against time to save his family in Montana. Meanwhile, Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer) sets off on her own harrowing trans-Atlantic journey to find Spencer and reclaim their love.” You can check out the recently released trailer right here.

Christopher Nolan, The Odyssey

Christopher Nolan has an early Christmas present for us: It’s been announced that his next movie will be an adaptation of The Odyssey. The director has been busy assembling an all-star cast for his new project, but details have frustratingly been kept under wraps… until now.

Christopher Nolan’s next film ‘The Odyssey’ is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology,” reads the post from Universal Pictures. “The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.” Now that the new project has finally been revealed, some of the rumours, which ranged from a period vampire thriller to a helicopter action movie, seem downright ridiculous.

The Odyssey is an ancient Greek poem by Homer which tells the tale of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his journey home after the ten-year Trojan War. The trip was filled with peril, including encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the witch-goddess Circe. At home, Odysseus is presumed dead, and his wife Penelope and son Telemachus must contend with groups of unruly suitors who each want Penelope’s hand in marriage to control the kingdom.

As I mentioned above, the film features an all-star cast which includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, and Zendaya. Could Damon be playing Odysseus? The Odyssey has the potential to be one of Nolan’s biggest productions, and I’m hugely excited by the possibilities. This is going to be one to watch.

We’ve seen several adaptations of The Odyssey over the years, including the 1954 movie Ulysses starring Kirk Douglas and the 1997 miniseries starring Armand Assante. The poem has inspired countless others, including O Brother, Where Art Thou?. The latest adaptation, The Return, hit theaters just a few weeks ago. It stars Ralph Fiennes as Odysseus and retells the last sections of Homer’s poem when the King washes up on the shores of Ithaca.

How do you feel about Christopher Nolan tackling The Odyssey?

The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim, digital release

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will be available on digital on December 27th after just two weeks in theaters. That’s certainly a quick turnaround, but given how poorly the animated movie has performed, it’s not surprising.

The War of the Rohirrim will be available on digital platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and more. The film will continue playing in theaters, but with all the heavy competition from Wicked: Part One, Moana 2, Mufasa: The Lion King, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, I can’t imagine the remaining screens will last long. The War of the Rohirrim has grossed just $15.4 million on a budget of $30 million.

The digital release of The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will include a few special features, including:

  • Return to Helm’s Deep: History Becomes Legend
  • Middle-earth and Anime: A Marriage of Creativity
  • Héra: A New Hero for Middle-earth

The official synopsis for The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim: “Set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original trilogy of films, “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” tells the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan. A sudden attack by Wulf, a clever and ruthless Dunlending lord seeking vengeance for the death of his father, forces Helm and his people to make a daring last stand in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg—a mighty fortress that will later come to be known as Helm’s Deep. Finding herself in an increasingly desperate situation, Héra, the daughter of Helm, must summon the will to lead the resistance against a deadly enemy intent on their total destruction.

The voice cast is led by Brian Cox (Succession) as Helm Hammerhand, the mighty King of Rohan; Gaia Wise (A Walk in the Woods) as his daughter Héra; and Luke Pasqualino (Snowpiercer) as Wulf. Miranda Otto reprises her role as Éowyn, the Shieldmaiden of Rohan who serves as the tale’s narrator. Christopher Lee also returns as Saruman with the use of archival recordings. The War of the Rohirrim has received mixed reviews, but our own Steve Seigh was a big fan, saying the film “reinvigorated my love of the LOTR franchise.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.

Lionsgate will be giving the highly-anticipated action thriller Den of Thieves 2: Pantera a theatrical release on January 10th – and with that date right around the corner, we’ve gotten our hands on a batch of EXCLUSIVE images from the film that feature stars Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr., highlighting the “buddy” dynamic their characters have in this sequel. You can check the images out at the bottom of this article.

This sequel involves a balls-to-the-wall diamond heist in Europe, with ‘Big Nick’ O’Brien (Gerard Butler) and Donnie Wilson (O’Shea Jackson Jr.) burying the hatchet for a bullet-chewing-caper that could set them up for life. Here’s the official synopsis: In Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, Big Nick is back on the hunt on the mean streets of Europe, closing in on Donnie, who is embroiled in the dangerous world of diamond thieves and the infamous Panther mafia, as they plot a massive heist of the world’s biggest diamond exchange. The film was directed and written by Christian Gudegast, who also wrote and directed the first movie.

If you need a refresher on what the first movie was about, here’s that synopsis: A Los Angeles crime saga in the vein of Heat, Den of Thieves follows the intersecting and often personally connected lives of an elite unit of the LA County Sheriff’s Dept. and the state’s most successful bank robbery crew as the outlaws plan a seemingly impossible heist on the Federal Reserve Bank of downtown Los Angeles.

Jordan Bridges (Den of ThievesMona Lisa Smile), Swen Temmel (The CovenantBoss Level), Evin Ahmad (Snabba CashBeyond Dreams), Yaen Zates Atour (The WitcherRobin Hood), Salvatore Esposito (FargoThe Perfect Dinner), Orli Shuka (Gangs of LondonWar Machine), and Rico Verhoeven (Black LotusUndercover) star alongside Butler and Jackson Jr. as primary cast members in Den of Thieves 2: Pantera.

Butler and Jackson Jr. are also producers on the film, producing alongside Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Mark Canton, Alan Siegel, and Tucker Tooley.

Wicked, George Lucas, Jon M. Chu

Many people have quickly congratulated Jon M. Chu for his silver-screen adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s Wicked, though one instance of praise is sure to rise above the rest. According to Chu, none other than Star Wars mastermind George Lucas called him to say how much he enjoyed Wicked. Speaking with CBS Mornings, Chu said Lucas called him from a mall to express his adoration for the film.

“He was still at the mall where he’d just seen the movie. He couldn’t have been more kind,” Chu said. “He’s like, ‘I see all the elements in that movie. I know how hard it is to pull it all together.’”

Chu added, “It’s so nice when you see leaders like that, creative leaders who actually reach out. I didn’t know that happened and are just so kind and say we’re doing this together.”

Wicked is a box office sensation, with $571.3M worldwide, making the musical one of 2024’s most successful and talked-about films. The film stands a good chance of being nominated for several Oscars in the upcoming awards ceremony, and the holiday rush at cinemas is about to heat up. While Sonic the Hedgehog 3, A Complete Uknown, Nosferatu, Moana 2, Babygirl, and Mufasa: The Lion King will take a portion of the holiday earnings, I could see Wicked picking up some additional millions as families visit theaters for the holidays.

The three-time Tony Award-winning stage musical was adapted from Gregory Maguire’s bestselling novel by writer Winnie Holzman and composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz, who collaborated on the screenplay adaptation. The story explains how a green-skinned woman framed by the Wizard of Oz becomes the Wicked Witch of the West. Maguire’s yarn is the ultimate fairy tale origin story and could have you rooting for the villain by the time it’s all over.

Do you think Jon M. Chu was freaking out when he saw he had a random phone call coming in from George Lucas? Do you plan to make Wicked a part of your holiday? Do you tend to go to the movies during the Christmas break, or is it easier to stay home? I want to see Nosferatu on Christmas Day, but it might be hard to sneak away with so many family members milling about. We’ll see.

Scarlett Johansson, Black Widow

What’s old is new again, as Marvel Studios plans for the future of its cinematic universe. After announcing that Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans would return for surprise roles in Avengers: Doomsday, a new rumor from industry leaker Daniel Richtman suggests Scarlett Johansson could also reprise her role as Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, for the upcoming superhero event film. Technically, Johansson’s character died while sacrificing herself to obtain the Soul Stone in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Still, when has that stopped Marvel from rewriting history to tell a new story?

Johnasson’s return to the MCU is a curious proposal. Following a dispute with Disney about the Black Widow solo film, she repeatedly said that she had no plans to play Black Widow again. However, time heals many wounds, and getting the band back together (plus a lucrative payday) could entice Johansson to suit up. While Downey’s role as Doctor Doom is confirmed, rumors suggest Chris Evans returns to the franchise as a Steve Rogers variant called Nomad. Hayley Atwell is also reprising her role as Captain Carter. If Downey, Evans, and Johansson return for more Avengers madness, could Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, and Mark Ruffalo also return? If the rumor about Doctor Doom assembling an “evil Avengers” team is true, I would not be surprised if Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars represent a reunion of the World’s Mightiest Heroes.

Joe and Anthony Russo direct Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars for Marvel Studios. Films leading up to Doomsday include Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Other projects in various stages of development are Marvel’s Blade revival, a fourth film in Sony’s Spider-Man franchise, a third Black Panther movie, and multiple television series, including Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Daredevil: Born Again, Ironheart, Wonder Man, Vision Quest, a Nova series, a Black Panther series, Spider-Man Noir starring Nicolas Cage, X-Men ’97 Season 2, and more!

How likely is it that Scarlett Johansson will return to the MCU for Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars? Are you excited about the classic MCU actors getting back in the game? Is this the best way for Marvel to move forward, or do they need to find a new angle? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Creature Commandos, Season 2, Max, DC

James Gunn and Peter Safran are likely doing the Monster Mash today after hearing that the first installment of DC’s Gods and Monsters arc, Creature Commandos, is getting a Season 2 renewal at Max. Between critics flapping their arms for The Penguin, Creature Commandos being a hit, and the new Superman trailer breaking records online, a renewed energy flows through DC Studios, making the future so bright we’ll need to wear shades.

Creature Commandos finds Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) forming a new team to do her dirty work. Code-named Task Force M, the misfit group of monsters accepts jobs deemed too risky for most humans. Creature Commandos boasts outstanding voice performances, with standouts Frank Grillo, Indira Varma, Maria Bakalova, and Zoe Chao. Each team member is more than what they appear, with Gunn taking a “villains aren’t born, they’re made” approach to the squad.

“We’re thrilled to team up with Max for another season of Creature Commandos mayhem,” Gunn and DC Studios co-chairman Peter Safran said in a statement. “From our spectacular first season of Peacemaker to the astonishing run of The Penguin to the record-breaking launch of Creature Commandos, Max has consistently delivered above industry expectations and beyond our wildest imaginings. Thank you, Casey, Sarah, Pia, Sono and the entire team for your tremendous support of DC Studios. We are proud to call Max home.”

Amy Gravitt, VP of HBO and Max comedy programming added, “Only James Gunn could have conjured this wild band of misfit monsters who tug at your heart and force you to root passionately for them. We couldn’t be more delighted to continue their stories with James, Dean Lorey, Peter Safran, and our fantastic partners at DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation.”

In my Creature Commandos review, I wrote, “If there’s one thing James Gunn is incredibly good at, it’s mixing action, comedy, and drama into a compelling narrative with characters that present depth and complexity. He’s a filmmaker who excels at changing the mood on a dime. One moment, you’re gasping at the absurdity of his taste for hyper-violence, and the next, he’s hitting you with an emotional story beat that reduces you to near-tears. Despite a pacing issue or two at the start, Creature Commandos steadily evolves into an exciting first chapter of what I assume are great things to come.”

Are you excited about Creature Commandos getting a Season 2 renewal? I can’t wait for you all to see the series’ remaining episodes. It’s a hell of a ride and a fantastic way for DC Studios to start a new era.
