Month: December 2024

There’s an inevitability that whenever a non-English-language film proves a notable crossover hit internationally, talk of a Hollywood redo will soon arise. In recent years, an American-set remake of horror Train to Busan is just one of several notable projects caught up in staggered development without making it to camera, despite the United States’ train infrastructure being a questionable fit for that particular film’s setup.

It’s a hackneyed thing to say but the international films that cross over, to a level that attracts Hollywood producers, do so because the cultural specifics of their storytelling ultimately tap into something universal.

That said, it’s interesting that some of the more successful English-language remakes of recent years – commercially or with awards bodies – have been those adapting films with fairly broad premises in the first place, where the template for even a half-competent translation is already there. While not reaching the over $400 million worldwide gross of French film The Intouchables (released as Untouchable in the UK), American remake The Upside still banked over $100 million upon release in early 2019.

And then there’s Belgian dramedy La Famille Bélier being remade as the most puzzling Oscars titan of late, CODA.
A similar awards-bait remake fate may befall How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies, a Thai film that’s become an unprecedented commercial success in Asian markets. For much of director Pat Boonnitipat’s debut feature, you can spot all the ways in which this story could so easily be translated to many other territories, particularly the United States.

In this case, however, it’s not that it’s a formulaic tale that comes across like a deliberate ploy to tempt investors in international film markets. Far from it, though there are certainly some telegraphed elements of predictability in this accomplished weepie.
After an extended family member dies following a long, debilitating illness, twentysomething slacker ‘M’ (Putthipong Assaratanakul) learns that his medical student cousin Mui (Tontawan Tantivejakul) has scored most of the old man’s multimillion-dollar inheritance, having been his primary carer.

When he learns of a bleak cancer diagnosis for his somewhat estranged grandmother (Usha Seamkhum, a wonder in her film debut) that the elderly woman doesn’t yet know about, M sees an opportunity to improve his prospects by becoming the world’s most devoted grandson. Grandma proves exceedingly tough to please, though M also learns he’s not the only opportunist gunning for the inheritance. And Amah is by no means as clueless as her kin seem to think.

Alongside beautifully-judged performances and management of a tricky tone, Boonnitipat and Thodsapon Thiptinnakorn’s sentimental but never saccharine screenplay nails something true and relatable about all the complicated responses we can have to the likely death of family – some of which may disgust us, though they stem from questions that naturally arise amid the practicalities of preparing for the worst. A bond that initially starts from a place of greed can still transform into something genuinely enriching beyond material gains. To paraphrase advice that cousin Mui gives M, all time given to loved ones is time well spent.

ANTICIPATION.

Thai megahit that’s also the country’s Oscars entry.

Oliver Stone, Gladiator II, Ridley Scott

I’m always curious to hear what filmmakers think of the work of their peers, and Oliver Stone recently chimed in with a few thoughts on Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II.

It’s certainly watchable. It’s good, well made, usual tight Ridley film, but I didn’t care about the people. I wasn’t invested,” Stone said on the PBD Podcast. “The first one was a classic. The second one is empty calories, like a commercial product.” While Scott may not have won Stone over, he does have a fan in Christopher Nolan, who recently expressed his love for the Gladiator sequel.

One film which Stone did like this year was Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis. “On a visual scale, it’s one stunning scene after another – beyond his Apocalypse, or his exotic One from the Heart,” Stone said. “As a narrative, many have knocked the film, and I cannot say I followed it completely, but enough to want to see it again, because I believe Francis was sincere in his exploration of a future, which is beyond what our society still doesn’t understand — that we can have a humanitarian society.

From legendary director Ridley Scott, Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome,” reads the official Gladiator II synopsis. “Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius (Paul Mescal) is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical Emperors who now lead Rome with an iron fist. With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look to his past to find strength and honor to return the glory of Rome to its people.

Our own Chris Bumbray recently reviewed Gladiator II, and while he admits that it isn’t the instant classic the original was, “it’s nonetheless a highly entertaining, faithful sequel, jam-packed with action and spectacle. There hasn’t been a lavish, action-driven historical drama done on this scale in some time, with Scott, despite his advancing age, as energetic and kinetic a director as ever.” You can check out the rest of Bumbray’s review right here.

The Running Man, release, Glen Powell

Edgar Wright’s The Running Man was previously slated to hit theaters on November 21, 2025, but Paramount has bumped up the release to November 7, 2025. This will move it out of the way of Wicked: For Good, which is set for a November 21, 2025 release. The studio will also have access to more IMAX screens on the new date.

The new release date isn’t entirely free of competition, as The Running Man will now face off against Dan Trachtenberg’s Predator: Badlands and Yorgo Lanthimos’ Bugonia, all of which are currently set to open on the same day.

Glen Powell (Twisters) stars in The Running Man as Ben Richards, a “desperate man, needing money for his sick daughter, who joins the most popular show, The Running Man, in which teams of killers hunt down contestants. The longer that a contestant survives, the more money that person makes. But as the game show’s producers and killers will find out, this desperate man will break all the rules and expose the show’s dark secrets.” In addition to Powell and Zayas, the rest of the cast includes Josh Brolin (Avengers: Endgame), Katy O’Brian (Love Lies Bleeding), Lee Pace (Foundation), Daniel Ezra (All American), William H. Macy (Shameless), Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim), Emilia Jones (CODA), Jayme Lawson (The Batman), and David Zayas (Dexter).

Edgar Wright is directing The Running Man from a script he co-wrote with Michael Bacall. It’s based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name, which was published in 1982 under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Wright has previously said that The Running Man remake will be closer to the original Stephen King novel than the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. “I like the film but I like the book more, and they didn’t really adapt the book,” Wright said. “Even as a teenager when I saw the Schwarzenegger film I was like, ‘Oh, this isn’t like the book at all!’ And I think, ‘Nobody’s [done] that book.’ So when that came up, I was thinking, and Simon Kinberg says, ‘Do you have any interest in The Running Man?’ I said, ‘You know what? I’ve often thought that that book is something crying out to be adapted.’ Now, that doesn’t mean that it’s easy! The Running Man will now hit theaters on November 7, 2025.

Superman trailer, James Gunn

The highly anticipated teaser trailer for James Gunn’s Superman was released yesterday, and judging by how much it’s been watched and dissected in the last 24 hours, the new DCU is off to a good start. In fact, the teaser trailer broke a big record for Warner Bros. and DC as Gunn took to social media to announce that it has been viewed over 250 million times.

Krypto really did take us home: With over 250 million views and a million social posts, Superman is officially the most viewed and the most talked about trailer in the history of both DC and Warner Bros,” Gunn wrote. “This is because of all of you: thank you! We’re incredibly grateful and, most of all, excited to share this movie with you in July. Happy Holidays!

While the Superman trailer has gathered more views in 24 hours than almost any of the year’s big movies (including Joker: Folie à Deux with 167 million views and Inside Out 2 with 157 million views), it’s still trailing behind Deadpool & Wolverine, which holds the record for the most-watched trailer of all time with 365 million views.

The Superman teaser trailer gave us a nice glimpse into what Gunn has planned for this new universe. I’m still not sure if I’m sold on the suits, but I’ve got my fingers crossed for this one. Be sure to let us know what you think of the trailer!

Superman stars David Corenswet (Pearl) as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Ms. Maisel) as Lois Lane. The cast also includes Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Guy Gardner, a charismatic and slightly obnoxious member of the Green Lantern Corps; Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as Mister Terrific; Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho; María Gabriela de Faría (Deadly Class) as The Engineer, a member of The Authority; Sara Sampaio (At Midnight) as Eve Teschmacher; Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones) as Jimmy Olsen; Wendell Pierce (The Wire) as Perry White; Neva Howell (Logan Lucky) as Martha Kent; Pruitt Taylor-Vince (The Walking Dead) as Jonathan Kent; and Nicholas Hoult (The Great) as Lex Luthor. Superman is slated to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

Deep Blue Sea, 4K Arrow Video

Renny Harlin’s Deep Blue Sea will be making the leap to 4K Ultra HD courtesy of Arrow Video. The guilty pleasure shark flick is one of my absolute favourites, so I am thrilled. The limited edition 4K set (which will also be released on Blu-ray) will be released on March 18, 2025.

Deep Blue Sea, 4K, Arrow Video

The official synopsis reads: “At an isolated research facility in the middle of the ocean, a team of scientists, led by Susan McAlester (Saffron Burrows), are working on a cure for Alzheimer’s by genetically altering the brains of sharks. When a shark escapes and attacks a pleasure boat, the company sponsoring the research threatens to pull its funding and sends corporate executive Russell Franklin (Samuel L. Jackson) to investigate. McAlester has just 48 hours to prove the value of her work, but her experiments have made the sharks smarter. No longer happy to be injected, prodded, and caged, they begin to turn the tables. As a freak storm causes chaos on the surface, making it impossible to leave, the facility is flooded and the scientists must fight to survive against the rising water and the hungry sharks that now swim freely through the corridors.

Zoe Saldaña, Avatar: Fire and Ash

Avatar fans won’t have to wait nearly as long for the return of James Cameron’s epic sci-fi franchise, as the next installment will hit theaters next year. While speaking with Deadline, Zoe Saldaña dropped a little tease about what’s to come in Avatar: Fire and Ash.

The way that we left the Sully family, they’re mourning heavily the loss of their child. So I do believe that that will carry out a great deal in the third installment of Avatar,” Saldaña said. “Jake and Neytiri are on this journey of acceptance, of accepting who they are and what they must be for each other and how they’re going to push forward to keep their family safe. And I love the fact that in the core of this entire saga is a beautiful love story, and I love that Jim really wrote that for them. But it’s not going to be easy. They’re not always going to meet eye to eye, and I just hope that they keep each other safe. That’s my hope for them.

Speaking of Avatar, Saldaña recently expressed disappointment that motion-capture acting doesn’t receive recognition at the Oscars. “Old habits die hard, and when you have old establishments, it’s really hard to bring forward change,” Saldaña said. “And I understand that, so I’m not bitter about it, but it is quite deflating when you give 120 per cent of yourself into something. I mean, not winning is OK, not being nominated is OK, but when you’re overlooked and then minimised and completely disregarded…

Avatar: Fire and Ash will also introduce another biome of Pandora, where the “aggressive, volcanic race” of Na’vi, known as the Ash People, reside. Avatar: Fire and Ash is currently set for a December 19, 2025 release, followed by Avatar 4 on December 21, 2029 and Avatar 5 on December 18, 2031. Cameron even has ideas for a potential Avatar 6 and 7, but that all depends on whether the demand for the franchise is still there. “There’ll be just far enough apart that they remain events, hopefully, in the lives of fans, of people who want to follow us, but not so far apart that it’s like there’s a generational difference between one movie,” Cameron said. “We’re fortunate we survived that, right? We got over that hurdle. So now we believe it’s going to come at the right pacing.

Jared Leto, Skeletor, Masters of the Universe

It’s…Skeletor’ing time? Following rumours earlier this year, Jared Leto is confirmed to be playing the role of Skeletor in the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie. A handful of other villains have also been cast, including Sam C. Wilson (House of the Dragon) as Trap Jaw, Hafthor Bjornsson (Game of Thrones) as Goat Man, and Kojo Attah (In the Grey) as Tri-Klops.

Masters of the Universe will star Nicholas Galitzine (The Idea of You) as Prince Adam/He-Man, Camila Mendes (Do Revenge) as Captain Teela, Alison Brie (Community) as Evil-Lyn, and Idris Elba (Sonic the Hedgehog 3) as Man-at-Arms/Duncan. The project has been in the works for quite some time with a revolving door of directors, writers, and actors, but at long last, it seems like it’s finally happening. Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings) will direct from a script by Chris Butler, with initial drafts penned by David Callaham, and Aaron & Adam Nee.

The project was previously set up at Netflix, but the streaming service scrapped the project last summer. Aaron and Adam Nee were tapped to write and direct the project before it fell apart, reportedly due to budget issues. Netflix had already spent close to $30 million on development costs, with the budget ballooning to over $200 million. There was an attempt to bring the budget down, with the idea of shooting the movie back-to-back with a sequel in order to amortize the cost, but an agreement couldn’t be reached. The project later found a new home at Amazon MGM Studios. Masters of the Universe will be released in theaters on June 5, 2026.

Leto will next be seen in Tron: Ares, the long-awaited Tron sequel. Leto stars as Ares, a highly sophisticated program that is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings. The film also stars Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Cameron Monaghan, Sarah Desjardins, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Gillian Anderson, and Jeff Bridges reprising his role of Kevin Flynn.
