Month: December 2024

Thirteen months ago, we heard that production had wrapped on an A24 project called Death of a Unicorn (it originally had an E at the end its title), which stars Paul Rudd (Ant-Man franchise) and Jenna Ortega (Wednesday), was executive produced by Hereditary/Midsommar/Beau Is Afraid director Ari Aster, and boasts a score composed by the legendary John Carpenter, along with his collaborators Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies. The movie is set to be released sometime in the spring of 2025, and today a poster for Death of a Unicorn has arrived online, along with the promise that a trailer will be dropping tomorrow. You can check out the poster at the bottom of this article.

Said to be a dark comedy, Death of a Unicorne marks the feature debut of writer/director Alex Scharfman, who co-founded the production company Secret Engine and has produced films like Blow the Man Down and Resurrection. The story centers on a father (Rudd) and daughter (Ortega) who accidentally hit and kill a unicorn while en route to a weekend retreat, where the former’s billionaire boss seeks to exploit the creature’s miraculous curative properties.

Here’s some more informationThe movie follows Elliot and his teenage daughter Ridley as they are en route to a crisis management summit with Elliot‘s bosses, the Leopold family, when they accidentally crash into a unicorn. The Leopolds quickly seize the opportunity to exploit the magical creature’s flesh, blood, and horn, which are endowed with supernaturally curative properties. However, as they delve deeper into their research, they discover the deadly consequences of their actions.

Richard E. Grant (Saltburn) plays the billionaire boss. Also in the cast are Téa Leoni (Flirting with Disaster), Will Poulter (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3), Anthony Carrigan (Barry), Sunita Mani (GLOW), Jessica Hynes (Shaun of the Dead), and Stephen Park (Asteroid City).

Scharfman produced Death of a Unicorne alongside Drew Houpt and Lucas Joaquin of Secret Engine, Tyler Campellone and Lars Knudsen of Square Peg, and Tim Headington and Theresa Steele Page of Ley Line Entertainment. Aster, Rudd, and Ortega serve as executive producers with Michael Williams, Jacob Epstein, David Darby, and Nate Kamiya. A24 and Ley Line Entertainment provided the financing and A24 will be handling the distribution.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, Sony, Bob Persichetti, Justin K. Thompson

The final film in Sony Animation‘s Spider-Verse trilogy, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is swinging into production. Franchise vets Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson will direct the highly anticipated threequel, striving for perfection after the first two films helped Spider-Verse become one of the most sought-after animated franchises ever.

“We have had the immense privilege of being part of Miles’ journey from the very beginning, and directing the conclusion to his story is beyond exciting,” said Persichetti and Thompson. “The creativity and care poured into every minute of this project has been truly inspiring. We have crafted what we feel is a very satisfying ending, and we can’t wait for fans to experience it – we’re bringing everything we’ve got!”

Persichetti and Thompson have been swinging alongside Miles Morales since the start of the character’s animated odyssey into the Multiverse. They jointly served as contributing directors for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and executive produced the sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. They contributed to the franchise’s eye-popping, industry-changing visuals and were a part of the directing team for Across the Spider-Verse with Joaquim Dos Santos and Kemp Powers.

Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Amy Pascal, and Avi Arad return as Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse producers, with Jinko Gotoh producing. Aditya Sood and Christina Steinberg are executive producers, and Jessica Berri is a co-producer. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller wrote the script alongside David Callaham, together performing the task of webbing up all the loose ends to one of animation’s most robust, multi-verse-spanning plots.

“Bob and Justin’s fingerprints are woven into the DNA of these films, and their passion for Miles’ journey shines through in every frame of his last adventure,” said Lord and Miller. “There is nothing more rewarding than collaborating with creative partners with bold vision and brilliant execution like Bob and Justin.  We are thrilled to work with them once again to create a beautiful and satisfying conclusion to this story.”

Plot details for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse remain a mystery, but you can bet I’ll pay close attention to this one. It isn’t easy to choose, but I’ve said out loud that Sony Animation’s Spider-Verse franchise is my favorite animated anything of all time. That’s a bold statement, I agree. But I can’t think of anything that’s helped change the game for the animated medium than the Spider-Verse films, visually speaking. The impact and success of the first two films have forced studios to rethink how they present animated features. Dreamworks Animation’s The Wild Robot and Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem are just two examples.

The trailer for Carry On purposely throws off the viewer by making them think they’re in for a romantic comedy. But this is decidedly more Die Hard than anything else. I didn’t love the film but I’ll admit it still has some interesting elements. You can read my review HERE but it seems like a lot of folks are loving this movie, which seems to have the makings of a holiday hit for Netflix.

I was lucky enough to talk to the cast of Carry On and what sets the thriller apart from other films. Danielle ended up being the star of the interview, giving some great answers and genuinely having a great time with it all. Notably, Taron Egerton teased the fact that he thinks the movie has franchise potential, saying, ““I think the thing about Carry On is…he’s a guy who is not really sure of who he is and he’s thrust into these sort of extraordinary circumstances and he rises to the occasion. But he’s a bit lost, I think, in this movie and you kind of see him just struggling to keep up for most of the film. And at the end of the film, you see a guy who’s a bit more sure of himself. So I think if we were ever lucky enough to get a second bite of the apple, I’d probably want to see him be a little more…fully realized, a little bit more certain of himself.”

In Carry On, Egerton plays a young TSA agent fights to outsmart a mysterious traveller (Jason Bateman – playing against type) who blackmails him into letting a dangerous package slip onto a Christmas Eve flight. Have you seen Carry On? Let us know in the comments what you thought!

The Return of the Living Dead Linnea Quigley

Almost forty years ago, writer/director Dan O’Bannon delivered one of the most highly entertaining zombie movies of all time with The Return of the Living Dead (watch it HERE). A company called Living Dead Media LLC claims to own the copyright to the original screenplay and the underlying script for that film, as well as other trademarks, which is how they’re able to move ahead with a new Return of the Living Dead film that’s aiming for a Christmas 2025 release. But earlier this year, a new company called ROTLD Originals LLC was formed, with Return of the Living Dead cast member Beverly Randolph, a.k.a. Beverly Dawn Hartley, signing the formation document. And now it has been revealed that ROTLD Originals LLC is teaming up with DRagonSTUDIOS, a company that owns the trademarks to The Return of the Living Dead and ROTLD Universe, for a movie project called Trash’s Revenge, which is described as being part of the “Return of the Living Dead Universe.”

Trash was the character played by scream queen Linnea Quigley in the original film – and Quigley and Randolph are both coming back for Trash’s Revenge. Quigley is also producing the film, with Randolph serving as an associate producer.

Here’s what it’s all about: As the saga continues decades after the horrific events of the 1985 cult classic, Trash the notorious punk rocker, played by Linnea Quigley, finds herself trapped in a past where fame has faded. Once a rebellious icon, Trash now embraces the persona of a grotesque Norma Desmond from Sunset Boulevard, attending conventions to sign autographs while her co-stars rise to greater heights. For Linnea, her legacy as a star of Return of the Living Dead becomes both a curse and a twisted ticket to notoriety in an industry obsessed with horror and scandal. But when a young filmmaker approaches her to make a documentary with staged re-enactments from the original film to celebrate the film’s 40th Anniversary, Linnea sees an opportunity to reclaim her place in the spotlight no matter the cost. As the documentary delves into her past, a shocking truth emerges: Return of the Living Dead wasn’t just fiction, part of it was real. Linnea confesses that she still possesses three original cannisters from the film, hidden away in her basement. Cannisters that were never revealed to the public… until now.

Trash’s Revenge will be launching a crowdfunding campaign on CineBacker.com next month – and to find out more about that campaign, click the link. Filming will take place in Los Angeles, New York, and London.

Back in August, Living Dead Media LLC filed a lawsuit against ROTLD Originals LLC, arguing that “simply being an actor in a film does not grant or convey any particular rights to that character or any other character or any rights to the Original Film, any derivative works, or related intellectual property.” There’s no word on what’s going on with that case, but it’s clearly not slowing down Trash’s Revenge.

man with the bag

After movies like Violent Night, Fat Man and the recent Red One, you’d think Santa movies with an action twist had reached their limit. However, the action icon, Arnold Schwarzenegger, now suits up to play Kris Kringle for the comedy The Man With the Bag, which also stars Alan Ritchson. The concept is similar to Red One, except this time, Santa loses his bag of presents and enlists a former thief to get it back. Adam Shankman (HairsprayRock of AgesA Walk to Remember) directs The Man With The Bag from a script by Allan Rice (Stuck in the MiddleCall Your MotherThe New Adventures of Old Christine). The holiday-themed project hails from Amazon MGM Studios.

The former Terminator has posted a photo for this holiday that features him donning some Christmas-y threads from the set of the film. Arnold posts on his Instagram, “Santa Claus is coming to town! It is fantastic to be shooting The Man with the Bag with @alanritchson. Our director @adamshankman is one of the funniest directors I’ve worked with, New York City is an amazing host, working with @amazonmgmstudios is a joy, and I can’t wait to share all of this Christmas cheer with each and every one of you.”

Meanwhile, the Reacher star will next lead in an action film called Painter, which will team him with Prey star Amber Midthunder and John Wick writer Derek Kolstad. The story Kolstad has crafted for this film centers on a young woman, trained from a young age, who must employ every skill in her arsenal to rescue her father after he is kidnapped. Midthunder will, of course, be playing that highly skilled young woman. The hope is that this will end up launching a franchise, much like John Wick. The Kolstad-scripted Nobody also has a sequel coming our way, so he’s good at launching franchises.

Ritchson and Kolstad are producing Painter alongside Drew Simon of Infrared, Josh Adler of Circle of Confusion, and Dan Spilo of Industry Entertainment. Infrared is providing the funding. Simon gave the following statement: Painter will be a seminal action hero film, making Midthunder into this generation’s Sarah Connor (Terminator). We loved Kolstad’s high-octane script, and we know with Garrett Warren at the helm this film will kickstart an exciting new franchise in the world of action.“
