Boxing movies stand apart from other sports dramas for the sheer energy and underdog spirit they bring to the screen. From Rocky to Raging Bull, the legacy of movies about the sweet science has fascinated viewers for decades. In 1951, young director Stanley Kubrick directed a short documentary titled Day of the Fight, which followed middleweight boxer Walter Cartier as he prepared for a match-up at Madison Square Garden in New York. Actor Jack Huston was fascinated by that film and wrote a film using the same title but chronicling a much different lead-up to a prize fight.
Day of the Fight follows Mike Flannigan (Michael Pitt), a former champion boxer who spent years in prison after an accident claimed the life of a child. Given a chance to redeem himself in the ring, Irish Mike travels around New York City to make amends with people from his past while also getting himself in the right mindset to enter the squared circle. On his journey, Mike reconnects with friends (John Magaro and Steve Buscemi), his father (Joe Pesci), the mother of his daughter (Nicolette Robinson), and his trainer Stevie (Ron Perlman). As Mike comes to terms with his life, he also prepares for what may or may not come next.
I got the chance to talk with the cast and filmmakers behind Day of the Fight. Co-star Nicolette Robinson talked about her method for centering her character in such an emotionally powerful story and the music that got her into the right place for the role. Ron Perlman talked about working with Jack Huston and Michael Pitt and whether he based his character on any iconic characters or actors from film history. Star Michael Pitt talked about how appreciative he was of Jack Huston turning down bigger budgets to keep him in the lead role after a rough time in his real life. Jack Huston talked about his first directorial effort and how he brought together a great cast. He also talked about a specific scene in the film between Michael Pitt and Joe Pesci which may be one of the best single scenes in the last decade of film. The Sundance Film Festival is once again upon us! Set to happen from January 23rd to February 2nd in Park City, Utah (with an online component from January 30th to Feb 2nd), the official schedule was unveiled today, and once again it’s an eclectic mix of indie fare, award hopefuls, and horror flicks. Once again, I’ll be there for JoBlo, filing a ton of reviews. To note, in recent years, Sundance has become especially well known for genre fare, with Hereditary, Talk to Me, and I Saw the TV Glow all premiering in the midnight section of the fest. January 1st will mark the two-year anniversary of Jeremy Renner’s snow plow accident, which fans and even Renner himself didn’t know if he would survive. Now part titanium (which he couldn’t help but note was better than iron, a swipe at Marvel co-star , Renner has made a miraculous recovery that he has been extremely open about. Next, Renner is setting pen to paper to chronicle his accident and recovery, planning a book that will do that and inspire others.
As Jeremy Renner recently revealed, he is currently writing a memoir related to his 2023 accident, even as he attends the Red Sea Film Festival. “While I’ve been here this whole trip, I’ve been doing the final edit on it, so it’s kind of fresh in my brain, because I tried to push it away a lot of times. And there’s so many wonderful gifts that come from being tested to your limits of death. Because I did die, and I came back, and I came back for a reason, and nothing to do with me. If it was my choice, I’d rather stay. But I came back, and I’m glad I’m back.” Now that’s one hell of a story that we can’t wait to get the full version of.
To give a little taste of what we might expect in his book regarding what he gained from the accident, Jeremy Renner continued, “The freedoms and the gifts bestowed on me because of the great tests, you know, crushing 38 bones and eye comes out, you know, the terrible things that kind of happen in a crushing injury, that’s so nothing at the end of it. I can say that now coming out of it, but great blessings unto the love and support of all the people I have in my life. And there’s nothing better than that – the only thing that matters in my life.”
It’s impossible not to give props to Jeremy Renner over his sheer perseverance following his accident. Here’s a guy that kept promoting his shows, started yet another one in Rennervations and is poised to make his movie return with next year’s third Knives Out, Wake Up Dead Man. As for reprising Hawkeye in the MCU, Renner is no doubt up for the challenge. And while no exact time frame has been given for Renner’s book, many of us will be picking that one up on day one.

Since then, the release was pushed back to sometime in March in an effort to align the domestic release with its international roll-out… but some of the PVOD platforms didn’t get the message. As Deadline reports, F Marry Kill reached some digital stores and PVOD on December 6th, then disappeared a few hours later. So if you managed to catch the movie during that brief window last Friday – congratulations, you got a special sneak peek! If you didn’t catch it, there’s still three months left to wait for it.
Laura Murphy, whose previous credits include Who Killed Santa? A Murderville Murder Mystery and episodes of the shows Adam Ruins Everything and Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens, directed F Marry Kill from a screenplay by Meghan Brown and Ivan Diaz, who are both earning their first feature writing credit on this film. Lucy Hale of Pretty Little Liars, Scream 4, Truth or Dare?, and Fantasy Island takes on the lead role.
Here’s the official synopsis: When true-crime junkie Eva Vaugh (Hale) is shoved into the dating app world by her besties on her 30th birthday, she suddenly finds herself at the center of a real-life murder case. As new details about the murders are revealed on her favorite podcast, she realizes that one of the three men she’s dating could be the infamous ‘Swipe Right Killer’ terrorizing the city. Now it’s up to Eva and her ride-or-die friends to figure out which date is a f***boy, a potential husband, or a killer in this comedy-thriller.
Hale is joined in the cast by Virginia Gardner (Halloween 2018), Brooke Nevin (I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer), Samer Salem (The Expanse), Bethany Brown (The Good Doctor), JayR Tinaco (Another Life), Jedidiah Goodacre (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Haley Victoria Hunt (The Charisma Killers), RJ Fetherstonhaugh (Wayward Pines), Brendan Morgan (Meet Me Next Christmas), Edem Nyamadi (Death and Other Details), Spencer Borgeson (When Mom Becomes a Murderer), Laura Yenga (Living with My Mother’s Killer), Brad Abramenko (Amish Stud: The Eli Weaver Story), Pete MacLeod (Hitler’s Land Stand), Kyle Mosonyi (Devil in Ohio), Cam Woodman (Food for the Heart), and Kendra Hesketh (Puppy Love).

Amazon has released the new trailer for the upcoming Will Ferrell/Reese Witherspoon dueling wedding comedy You’re Cordially Invited. Nicholas Stoller, whose credits include the Neighbors movies, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and the recent Seth Rogen Apple Original Platonic. Joining Ferrell and Witherspoon in the cast is Geraldine Viswanathan, Meredith Hagner, Jimmy Tatro, Stony Blyden, Leanne Morgan, Rory Scovel, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Ramona Young, Jack McBrayer and Celia Weston.
The official synopsis reads, “When two weddings are accidentally booked on the same day at the same venue, each bridal party is challenged with preserving their family’s special moment while making the most of the unanticipated tight quarters. In a hilarious battle of determination and grit, the father of the bride (Will Ferrell) and sister of the other bride (Reese Witherspoon) chaotically go head-to-head as they stop at nothing to uphold an unforgettable celebration for their loved ones.”
The movie is also written by Stoller and is executive produced by Alex Brown, Brendan O’Brien and Ted Gidlow. Nicholas Stoller, Conor Welch, Reese Witherspoon, Lauren Neustadter, Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum are on board as the producers of the film.
Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar last year, Witherspoon said You’re Cordially Invited harkens back to the days of feel-good comedies. “I think the human capacity to handle as much heartbreak and tragedy that’s happened in the world is really diminished,” she said. “I think of opportunities to make movies and television shows that are joyful, optimistic, funny … I think about what I want to see on a Friday night, and while I can appreciate a true-crime show or a podcast, I really need some levity. I think the world is looking for a little brightness.“
Meanwhile, Ferrell is also set to reunite with Stoller for Judgement Day, a TV courtroom comedy in development at Amazon MGM Studios. The plot for Judgement Day “follows a young convict fresh out of prison who takes a reality TV courtroom hostage, blaming the megalomaniac TV judge (Ferrell) for a past ruling that the convict feels ruined his life.”
You’re Cordially Invited will premiere on Prime Video on January 30, 2025.
