Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Jim Carrey, money

Two years ago, Jim Carrey said he was retiring unless “the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink,” but the actor returned for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Does this mean the Sonic sequel was that magical gold ink script? Not quite.

That night’ve been hyperbole, yeah,” said Carrey when asked about his past comments on the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 red carpet. “I came back to this universe because I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And you know, I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly.

Carrey naturally reprised his role of Dr. Ivo Robotnik for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but he actually pulls double duty as Gerald Robotnik, Ivo’s grandfather and the creator of Shadow the Hedgehog. Director Jeff Fowler knew they wanted Carrey to play both roles, but he acknowledged that it was “such a big ask” as Carrey would have twice the amount of work (and twice the pay cheque?) Thankfully, Carrey was down. “I don’t know what we would’ve done,” Fowler told EW last month. “I don’t even want to think about this.

The official synopsis for Sonic the Hedgehog 3: “Sonic the Hedgehog returns to the big screen this holiday season in his most thrilling adventure yet. Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.” The first reactions have been positively glowing, with many calling it the best installment of the trilogy.

James Marsden reprises his role as Tom Wachowski in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the sheriff of Green Hills. Other returning cast members include Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Miles “Tails” Prower, Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna, Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski, Tom Butler as Commander Walters, Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone, and, of course, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik/Gerald Robotnik. New members of the cast include Krysten Ritter, James Wolk, Sofia Pernas, Cristo Fernández, and Jorma Taccone, as well as Alyla Browne, who is said to be playing Maria.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will hit theaters on December 20th.

Happy Gilmore 2, release, Eminem

It’s been nearly thirty years since the release of Happy Gilmore, but Adam Sandler is back on the links for the sequel. Sandler recently called into the Dan Patrick Show and revealed that Happy Gilmore 2 has wrapped. Not only that, but the actor teased a cameo from Eminem and a possible release in July.

I don’t know 100 percent [when Happy Gilmore 2 will be released], but I think around July,” Sandler said. “Not July 4th, but we’re trying to get it done in time for July. You never know what’s going to happen. We’re just finishing today — it’s the last day.

As for Eminem, Sandler said, “Eminem was cool. He came by, and he was great. I know Eminem for a long time, and he’s a great guy. He came in and was funny as hell. I think we just hung out a day with Eminem, and he just shot and shot, and it was insane. Said a million things we can use and a million things that we’re glad we have him on tape.” Sandler also teased that golfing legend Jack Nicklaus showed up for a scene. “He was amazing, and his wife was awesome,” Sandler said. “In the scene, I sit next to Jack, so I got to talk to him, and he was so nice to me, man.

The original Happy Gilmore is much beloved among fans, and Sandler is definitely feeling the pressure for the sequel to live up to the first movie. “It’s on your mind,” Sandler said. “We’ve got a lot of good stuff, and we just want to make sure that it all comes together and keeps it going from start to finish, and that’s the goal. We’ll see. We’re definitely nervous, but we feel some sort of confidence.

In addition to Sandler, the sequel features a few members of the original cast, including Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, and Ben Stiller. The film also includes appearances from Benny Safdie, Bad Bunny, Margaret Qualley, Scott Mescudi, and many more. These types of belated comedy sequels rarely work out, in my opinion, but I am anxious to see what Happy has been up to all these years. Plus, Sandler has said he was “the most excited I’ve been in many years” for the sequel, and that’s got to count for something.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3, first reactions

History has shown us that video game movies rarely work. Sure, there are a few notable exceptions, but I never expected Sonic the Hedgehog to be one of them. But here we are, with the first reactions to Sonic the Hedgehog 3 praising it as the best of the trilogy.

Collider’s Steven Weintraub said Sonic the Hedgehog 3 “is definitely the best one yet. The addition of Shadow (voiced by Keanu Reeves) adds a great antagonist that isn’t empty calories. But the reason to see the Sonic movies is Jim Carrey. He’s such a brilliant performer and he never gives less than his everything. Was a lot of fun watching him play off himself. He plays two roles in the sequel.

ComicBook.com’s Chris Killian added, “It’s not often that each movie gets better in a trilogy, but #SonicMovie3 is the best of the bunch. There’s action-packed goofiness a plenty thanks to Jim Carrey pulling double duty, but what I didn’t expect was a surprisingly moving performance from Keanu Reeves and a third act that might make Sonic fans a little weepy-eyed. Also – there are two big post credits scenes so AVOID SPOILERS. It’s clear [Jeff Fowler] and crew have a great affinity for the Blue Blur and he’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

The Hollywood Handle said: “[Sonic the Hedgehog 3] nears perfection and is easily the best film of the trilogy. While the first film felt like it was a kids film, this third film feels like it’s aimed at young adults with its story and tone although the jokes never fail to find their place for the younger audience. Keanu Reeves is the perfect casting for Shadow who is handled with great care and has a story that’s emotional and powerful. Jim Carrey’s return turns the dial up on his charismatic and energetic characteristics. Ben Schwartz, Colleen O’ Shaughnessey and Idris Elba are an unstoppable trio that bring the film together with their vocal performances.

Per The Atom: “LEGENDARY!! Keanu’s Shadow is PERFECT. Fun & BOMBASTIC adventure with emotional stakes. Balances humor with such gravitas. Also thrilling action that edges your hog. Not just another sequel, it’s the BEST Sonic film ever!

Those are certainly some glowing first reactions, but will Sonic the Hedgehog 3 live up to the hype?

Ian McKellen, Steven Soderbergh

Deadline reports that Steven Soderbergh is setting up the cast for his next project, with Ian McKellen (The Lord of the Rings), Michaela Coel (I May Destroy You), and James Corden (Cats) signing on.

Titled The Christophers, the dark comedy is “about the estranged children of a once-famous artist who hire a forger to complete his unfinished works so they can be discovered and sold after his death.” The movie has been scripted by Ed Solomon, who has worked with Soderbergh on several projects, including No Sudden Move, Full Circle, and Mosaic. Production will kick off in London in February.

Soderbergh has several movies set to debut in the new year. First up is Presence, a psychological thriller about a family who moves into a suburban house and becomes convinced they are not alone after a supernatural force infiltrates the house and takes a specific interest in the couple’s daughter. The film stars Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Callina Liang, Julia Fox, Eddy Maday, and West Mulholland. Our own Chris Bumbray caught the film when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and you can read his review right here. Presence will hit theaters on January 17, 2025.

Next up is Black Bag, a spy thriller with an all-star cast, which includes Cate Blanchett (Borderlands), Michael Fassbender (The Agency), and Regé-Jean Page (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves). Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the film will debut in theaters on March 14, 2025.

As for McKellen, the actor has expressed a tentative willingness to return for the upcoming Lord of the Rings spinoff movie featuring Gollum. However, the 85-year-old actor added that they’d “better be quick” about it if they want him back. The Gollum movie may not be the only Lord of the Rings project that McKellen could return for. Screenwriter Philippa Boyens has said that they’re “playing around with a number of ideas, but most of those ideas do involve Gandalf.

Andy Serkis, who will direct the movie and play Gollum, dropped a few teases about The Hunt for Gollum earlier this year. “It is so early; it would be unfair to commit to anything at this point,” Serkis said. “But I will say that it will be a deep dive where we investigate Gollum’s character. There may be characters that we recognize that might be coming back. I’m not going to say who.

Greta Gerwig Narnia

Back in July of 2023, it was announced that Barbie director Greta Gerwig had been hired to write and direct at least two Chronicles of Narnia films for the Netflix streaming service. We haven’t heard any details on this project, we don’t even know for sure which book(s) Gerwig has chosen to bring to the screen, but during an interview with Deadline, producer Amy Pascal said (with thanks to Total Film for the transcription) that Gerwig has a “very new take on Narnia. It’s all about rock ‘n’ roll.” Meanwhile, actor Jason Isaacs is spreading the rumor that the first Narnia book that Gerwig is adapting is the prequel The Magician’s Nephew!

While listing his favorite books, Isaacs told The Week, “I loved all the Narnia books as a kid. When Peter was told he wouldn’t be coming back, I understood something devastating about mortality. I picked this one because Greta Gerwig is about to make a film of it, which I can’t wait to see.

Netflix acquired the rights to C.S. Lewis’ series of Narnia novels way back in 2018. There are seven novels in the series: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair, The Horse and His Boy, The Magician’s Nephew, and The Last Battle. The first four books have received multiple television adaptations over the decades since they were published in the 1950s. Walden Media made two big screen adaptations with Disney. The first, Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, was an enormous hit in 2005, grossing over $745 million worldwide, but the 2008 sequel Prince Caspian, made significantly less, $419 million. So Walden Media had to go to Fox to get a third movie made, 2010’s The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. That one made about as much as Prince Caspian.

Like Jason Isaacs, I loved the Narnia books when I was a kid. I haven’t read them since I was a kid, though. I really should revisit them.

If Gerwig is making The Magician’s Nephew, this is the story she’ll be bringing to life: Narnia… a land frozen in eternal winter… a country waiting to be set free. On a daring quest to save a life, two friends are hurled into another world, where an evil sorceress seeks to enslave them. But then the lion Aslan’s song weaves itself into the fabric of a new land, a land that will be known as Narnia. And in Narnia, all things are possible.

Are you looking forward to seeing what a “rock ‘n’ roll” Narnia adaptation from Greta Gerwig is going to be like? What do you think of the idea that she’s making The Magician’s Nephew? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
