Month: December 2024

Josh Brolin, Denis Villeneuve

Dune: Part Two was a hell of a movie, and Josh Brolin certainly believes that it will have Oscar glory in the future. In fact, Brolin laid down the gauntlet last month, saying that he will “quit acting” if director Denis Villeneuve doesn’t get nominated for an Academy Award. “[Dune: Part Two] was a better movie than the first one. When I watched it, it felt like my brain was broken open,” Brolin said. “It’s masterful, and Denis is one of our master filmmakers. If the Academy Awards have any meaning whatsoever, they’ll recognize him.

That’s a lot of pressure to put on someone, and Denis Villeneuve responded to Brolin’s statement while speaking with GamesRadar+. “That gives me a tremendous amount of responsibility, putting all of that on my shoulders!” The Dune director said. “Thanks Josh, that’s embarrassing! I mean if Josh does decide to quit acting, it will be my responsibility to fight him on it.

The first Dune received a lot of love at the Academy Awards in 2022, with ten nominations. It won six awards, including Best Original Score, Best Sound, Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, and Best Visual Effects. And hey, if Villeneuve strikes out again, he’ll get another chance when he returns to Arrakis for a third installment of the franchise. However, the director has said that he doesn’t view Dune 3 as the completion of a trilogy. “First, it’s important that people understand that for me, it was really a diptych,” Villeneuve said. “It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book. That’s done and that’s finished. If I do a third one, which is in the writing process, it’s not like a trilogy. It’s strange to say that, but if I go back there, it’s to do something that feels different and has its own identity.

There’s more story that could be told with Dune, but Villeneuve has said that this will likely be his last journey to Arrakis. That said, he’s fine if something else wants to continue the franchise. “Listen, if ‘Dune: Messiah’ happens, it will have been many years for me on Arrakis, and I would love to do something else,” he said. “I think that it would be a good idea for me to make sure that, in ‘Messiah,’ there are the seeds in the project if someone wants to do something else afterwards, because they are beautiful books. They are more difficult to adapt. They become more and more esoteric. It’s a bit more tricky to adapt, but I’m not closing the door. I will not do it myself, but it could happen with someone else.

James Gunn is setting the record straight about going back behind the camera for his Superman film in the wake of deceptive reports. While responding to a fan inquiry on Threads this weekend, Gunn clarified that he’s scheduling a “day and a half” of pickup shots, not reshoots, to enhance his Superman film. Responding to the additional footage rumor and whether or not he plans to shoot more footage for the foundational superhero film, Gunn said:

“Sort of. Not a few days. We’re doing a day and a half of pickup shots. No scenes. No reshoots. Just a handful of individual shots to enhance the film.”

While some fans challenged Gunn’s response in some poorly veiled attempt to out him about filming new scenes, others commended Gunn for his transparency, saying they appreciate hearing from the horse’s mouth instead of being kept in the dark. James Gunn has traditionally been up-front about his intentions for projects he lays hands on. His behavior could stem from being an old-school film fan and knowing what it’s like to fan out over things you feel passionately about.

A lot is riding on James Gunn’s Superman. The Gods and Monsters arc of the new DCU kicks off with the seven-episode animated series Creature Commandos, but many await Superman like it’s the end all be all of the franchise. If Gunn’s Superman film stumbles at the box office – and with fans – it brings Gunn and Safran’s ability to lead DC Studios into question, tainting enthusiasm for future projects. Superman blows everyone’s socks off in a perfect world, teeing Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Batman Azteca: Choque De Imperios (Clash of Empires), The Authority, Teen Titans, and more. I shudder to think of the backlash if Superman doesn’t land with precision, especially as someone whose job is to report on such things.

Thankfully, Gunn sounds highly confident about his Superman film, and pickup shots could enhance the film in ways we’ve yet to realize. I hope Superman comes out of the gate swinging, instilling confidence in fans and getting them jazzed about the DCU’s future. I’m dying to see Tom King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and my friends have been up my ass about reading The Authority for months. A strong showing from Superman could only mean good things for the DCU’s future. Let us pray.

While there are mixed feelings surrounding the digital release of what could be Clint Eastwood‘s final, Juror #2, Warner Classics is rubbing ointment on the wound with a Clint Eastwood Marathon featuring several of the legendary filmmaker’s classic films. Head over to the Warner Classics YouTube channel. You’ll find movies like Unforgiven, Where Eagles Dare, the Dirty Harry series, Flags of Our Fathers, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Kelly’s Heroes, and more streaming on the dominant video share platform.

The Clint Eastwood Marathon began on December 3 but still brings viewers essential picks from Eastwood’s catalog with quality picture and sound. Well, it’s as good as YouTube or your monitor can muster. Still, I’m watching the stream on my second screen right now, and it’s good enough for me. And because it’s YouTube, you can scroll back, pause, watch whatever is playing for free!

Considering Clint Eastwood’s contribution to the film industry, many wonder if WB let him down by failing to give Juror #2 a wide theatrical release. His films have grossed more than $3.8 billion at the box office, yet WB needs help finding room for him in theaters across the United States. That’s weird, right? Some would even say it’s disrespectful. It’s not like Juror #2 is one of Eastwood’s weaker films. Even Guillermo del Toro when to bat for the courtroom drama on Bluesky:

“Went to the theatre to see Juror#2, Clint Eastwood’s latest film. We enjoyed it tremendously.  It’s – in some ways- his Crimes and Misdemeanors.  The film is precisely and assuredly filmed, and it’s Nicolas Hoult’s to lead.  The cast delivers beautifully, and it has an ending that sets the theatre abuzz-Its central dilemma reminded me of the quiet turmoil boiling under Dana Andrews in Preminger Noir of your choice (for me- Where The Sidewalk Ends). It wrestles with it supported by a well-paced structure and well-pondered twists.  Why was this not released widely in the States? We saw at the Grove with a significant crowd that was vocal and responsive all the way.  I truly hope WB can hold it longer.  Eastwood is a master filmmaker and the steady, unfussy craft reveals him still in great form.  Go see it on the big screen!”

Juror #2 comes to Max on December 20, but you can watch the Clint Eastwood Marathon on Warner Classics’ YouTube channel now! Do you have a favorite Clint Eastwood film? Let us know in the comments section below.

Evil Dead Rise

In the build-up to the release of Evil Dead Rise (read our review right HERE) last year, Evil Dead franchise rights holders Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Rob Tapert let it be known that they were already looking forward to producing more entries in the series, with Campbell revealing they were hoping to make a new sequel / spin-off every two or three years. In February, they proved their commitment to this idea by hiring Sébastien Vaniček, who made his feature directorial debut on the French horror film Vermin, a.k.a. Infested, to write and direct a new installment in the franchise. Now, Vaniček has taken to social media to share a picture of the title page for his script Evil Dead Burn, along with a promise that the film will be released in 2026!

Details on the story Vaniček will be telling in Evil Dead Burn have not been revealed, but he has said that he has complete creative control on his Evil Dead movie, and intends to give it a French twist.

Last year, Bruce Campbell told AV Club, “It’s all about the books now. It has nothing to do with (franchise hero Ash) or any particular character. In Army of Darkness, we first saw three books. So we know there are three out there, and none of them are any good. It’s about: where does that darn book wind up, who gets it, and what happens? But the universe is the same. It’s about innocent people with no special skills having to fight for their very lives. … I think the stories will progress a little more now. We’re going to try and do them more like every two or three years rather than every 10 years. It’s also the first time Sam is working with his brother Ivan to create an overall Bible that will give future writers and directors an idea of where this thing should go next to potentially tie in some of these stories. So I think it’s going to get a little more tied in as the years go by. But because it’s all about the books. It could be a book in the past, a book in the future. It’s yet to be determined.

Sam Raimi made his feature directorial debut with the original The Evil Dead, which introduced Campbell as iconic hero Ash Williams. Ash returned for Evil Dead II, Army of Darkness, and the Ash vs. Evil Dead TV series, with Raimi directing the films and the first episode of the show. After seeing a short film directed by Fede Alvarez, the Evil Dead rights holders gave him the chance to make his feature directorial debut with the Ash-less 2013 Evil Dead. Then Lee Cronin was hired to make the Ash-less Evil Dead Rise based on the strength of his own feature debut, the 2019 film The Hole in the Ground. So Sébastien Vaniček being hired to make the next Evil Dead movie right after entering the feature world with Vermin / Infested is very on brand for this franchise.

Vaniček’s Evil Dead Burn isn’t the only Evil Dead movie in development. Two months after he was hired to make his movie, the rights holders also hired Francis Galluppi, who just made his feature directorial debut with the crime thriller The Last Stop in Yuma County, to write and direct his own Evil Dead flick. We haven’t heard any more about that one. An animated series follow-up to Ash vs. Evil Dead is also in the works.
