the wheel of time

Amazon Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time takes its own getting to new seasons, with a full 21 months between the first and second. Finally, after season two concluded in October of last year, we have a teaser for season three. And while that might give fans a taste of what’s to come, they still have to wait until March for the episodes to drop.

As per Amazon Prime Video, season three of The Wheel of Time has the following synopsis: “The threats against the Light are multiplying: The White Tower stands divided, the Black Ajah run free, old enemies return to the Two Rivers, and the remaining Forsaken are in hot pursuit of the Dragon … including Lanfear (Natasha O’Keeffe), whose relationship with Rand will mark a crucial choice between Light and Dark for them both. As the ties to his past begin to unravel, and his corrupted power grows stronger, Rand becomes increasingly unrecognizable to his closest allies, Moiraine and Egwene (Madeleine Madden). These powerful women, who started the series as teacher and student, must now work together to prevent the Dragon from turning to the Dark, no matter the cost.”

Based on Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson’s book series of the same name The Wheel of Time first premiered in 2021, making it one of the earliest original endeavors from Amazon Prime Video. While we didn’t dig the first season all that much and it has by and large flown below the radar, its fanbase – particularly those who kept up with the books – has kept it going, even getting this upcoming third season greenlit before its second even debuted.

The Wheel of Time book series has been around for decades, with the first novel coming out in 1990. Since then, there have been numerous novels – with the final one, A Memory of Light coming out in 2013 – as well as comic book imaginings and games. Judging by this and with a faithful fandom, The Wheel of Time could prove to be one of the streamer’s most popular shows.

Season three of The Wheel of Time comes to Amazon Prime Video on March 13th.

It has been nearly a decade since we last got a Star Trek movie, but Paramount+ is proving to be the final frontier, as they are moving forward with a series of movies exclusive to their service. The first of these, Star Trek: Section 31, is set to hit the streamer on January 24th, and now we have the official trailer to get fans ready.

Released at CCXP in Brazil, the trailer for Star Trek: Section 31 looks to be upping the risk for the Starfleet. As Michelle Yeoh’s character warns and readies, “Millions of lives are at stake. Gather your people. We’re going to need every one of them.” As per Paramount, Section 31 has the following plot: “In the movie, Yeoh reprises her fan-favorite role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou – a character she played in STAR TREK: DISCOVERY’s first season – who joins a secret division of Starfleet. Tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, she also must face the sins of her past.” Olatunde Osunsanmi – a veteran of Star Trek: Discovery as well as short anthology Short Treks – directs, while Craig Sweeny (Medium, Elementary) writes.

Joining Yeoh for Star Trek: Section 31 are Omari Hardwick, Kacey Rohl, Sam Richardson, Sven Ruygrok, Robert Kazinsky, Humberly Gonzalez, and James Hiroyuki Liao.

Star Trek: Section 31 hasn’t exactly been building a lot of positive buzz with the fanbase, and it’s not likely that the trailer will do much to sway. While the cast does have promise – especially led by Oscar winner Yeoh, who has such little TV work to her credit – the movie just isn’t looking to be a draw for Paramount+. Touching on the potential backlash while also defending why he took such an approach, Sweeny previously stated, “The concept is almost antagonistic to some of the values of Star Trek. Famously, there’s a spot for everybody in Roddenberry’s utopia, so I was like, ‘Well, who would be the people who don’t quite fit in?’ I didn’t want to make the John le Carré version, where you’re in the headquarters and it’s backbiting and shades of gray. I wanted to do the people who were at the edges, out in the field. These are not people who necessarily work together the way you would see on a ‘Star Trek’ bridge.”

What do you think of the trailer for Star Trek: Section 31? Will you be checking it out on Paramount+?

Best Christmas Action films

Is Die Hard a Christmas movie? This is an age-old debate a lot of film fans have surprisingly strong feelings about. When it came out in the summer of 1988, Die Hard wasn’t originally intended as a Christmas movie, despite the fact that it takes place on Christmas Eve, but in the 21st century, the movie steadily became a yuletide favourite. Even if it wasn’t intended as a Christmas movie, it can’t be denied that Bruce Willis’s John McClane has become a Christmas icon, and that thematically (a man reunites with his family on Christmas Eve) it’s not all that different from other holiday classics. In my opinion, time has made it a Christmas movie, but the time has come for our readers to make the call themselves. Is Die Hard a Christmas movie? Take the poll below and let us know why (or why not) in the comments!

Box Office

In a turn of events that shouldn’t surprise anyone, Deadline is reporting that Thanksgiving holdovers Moana 2 and Wicked are dominating the box office on a weekend that’s light on competitive new releases. However, both Moana 2 and Wicked are coming in softer than I anticipated in my box office predictions, with Disney’s animated sequel on track to make just over $50 million (a stronger-than-expected 64% drop) while Wicked should make $32 million.

Just like in previous weekends, Gladiator II should be right behind them with a $12 million gross, while Red One should make $7 million for an $85 million total (it will be interesting to see if it can top $100 million domestically). However, the movie placing fifth this weekend is a huge surprise, with the Indian-made sequel, Pushpa 2 – The Rule, on track for a $5 million weekend.

The weekend’s two biggest new releases, A24’s Y2K and Briarcliff’s Werewolves seem to be struggling to find an audience in the marketplace. Y2K, in particular, was given a big push by A24 with over 2000 screens for the Rachel Zegler-led horror comedy, but it will barely top $2 million this weekend for a ninth-place debut. Werewolves won’t even make it to the top 10, with it on track for only $1.2 million (too bad – as we quite liked this flick).

In fact, outside of Pushpa, the most successful release this weekend is the 10th anniversary re-release of Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, which is on track for a hefty $4.1 million despite being exclusively open on only 165 IMAX screens. Back when it came out, Interstellar, which wasn’t able to cross $200 million domestically, was seen as a disappointment, but time has been kind to Nolan’s film, with it now considered a classic.

real ghostbusters

Who you gonna call? Funko! Not only will Funko release Pop! Vinyls modeled after The Real Ghostbusters but they are up for pre-order now. According to sources, the Real Ghostbusters figures will street on January 19th.

As photos show, the Real Ghostbusters does a great job at capturing the charm that helped the animated series be a fan favorite. Peter Venkman comes with Slimer, Ray Stantz looks genuinely scared, Winston Zeddemore is decked in his blue suit, and Egon Spengler – who had the biggest makeover from movie to series – has his blonde top and red glasses. Even cooler, each of the guys comes with an “in-use” proton pack that will give your display more action.

Funko is no stranger to the Ghostbusters property, hitting everything from the original 1984 movie to the 2016 all-female version to the most recent entry, Frozen Empire. Whether human or spirit or anthropomorphic marshmallows, the company has made good and steady use of the franchise. Really, it was only a matter of time before they got around to The Real Ghostbusters. And to be honest, this set of four – which are sold separately – might be the best-looking of the entire lot so far.

The Real Ghostbusters ran for season sevens and 140 episodes, debuting in 1986, a few years before Ghostbuters II came out. That it continued into 1991 showed just the sort of pop culture power the series had even back then. But we have to admit that even though these Funko Pops! give off a nostalgic vibe, it’s tough to match the toys that were put out when the show was on the air. And now you’re once again regretting ever getting rid of the firehouse playset, which of course goes for a pretty penny on eBay.

But it’s not just fans that love The Real Ghostbusters – it’s not making the movies, too, as a super cool Kenner tie-in toy called Bug-Eye Ghost was actually given a cameo in Afterlife. Hey, it’s less grotesque than the Fearsome Flush!

What do you think of the Real Ghosbusters Pop! Vinyls? Will you be pre-ordering them?
