summer rental

One of John Candy’s 80s classics from director Carl Reiner, Summer Rental, was pretty elusive on physical media. Fans of this comedy don’t have to wait any longer as the boutique label Kino Lorber will now be releasing a new 4K restoration Blu-ray transfer of the film at the start of the new year. Blu-ray.com is reporting that Summer Rental, which was previously scheduled to hit retailers this year, will now have its physical media release on January 21, 2025.

The 1985 comedy stars John Candy, Karen Austin, Kerri Green, Joey Lawrence, and Aubrey Jene and is directed by Dick Van Dyke Show alum and Ocean’s Eleven star, Carl Reiner, who would direct another summer-themed comedy with Mark Harmon, Summer School, just a couple years later.

The description reads, “Comedy legend Carl Reiner (Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid) directed this tale of a family man who takes a vacation from sanity when he takes a lease on a Florida Summer Rental. Comedy icon John Candy (Uncle Buck) plays the stressed-out air traffic controller whose much-needed family holiday yields one hysterical misadventure after another—from settling into his hovel, to settling down on a “party” beach, to settling the score with a nut at sea. The fun’s in the sun, and so’s the moral: taking it easy is tougher than landing a 747! Co-starring Richard Crenna (The Flamingo Kid), Rip Torn (Dodgeball), John Larroquette (Blind Date), Kerri Green (The Goonies), Joey Lawrence (TV’s Blossom) and Karen Austin (The Ladies Club).”

Special features and technical specs have been revealed for this release:

  • Optional English Subtitles

Kino Lorber has a specialty for releasing some rare-to-find films, although their library varies as they also announced the special 4K release of the early Dwayne Johnson action-comedy The Rundown. However, the label also recently revealed that they will be releasing a special 30th-anniversary edition of the cult film Radioland Murders. That film is lesser-known work of Star Wars creator George Lucas and stars Brian Benben and Mary Stuart Masterson. The 1994 film was directed by Mel Smith and the screenplay was penned by Lucas with Willard Huyck, Gloria Katz, Jeff Reno and Ron Osborn. The movie was also produced by Star Wars: Special Edition and Star Wars Episode I-III producer Rick McCallum.

George R.R. Martin, The Winds of Winter

It’s been over thirteen years since the release of A Dance with Dragons, the most recent installment of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels. To say fans have been anticipating the next novel is something of an understatement, but as the years have passed by, many have begun to wonder if Martin will ever finish The Winds of Winter. Turns out, it’s a concern Martin shares.

Unfortunately, I am 13 years late,” Martin told THR. “Every time I say that, I’m [like], ‘How could I be 13 years late?’ I don’t know, it happens a day at a time. But that’s still a priority, and I do hope to visit it. A lot of people are already writing obituaries for me. [They’re saying] ‘Oh, he’ll never be finished.’ Maybe they’re right. I don’t know. I’m alive right now! I seem pretty vital!

Even when Martin does finish The Winds of Winter, there’s still A Dream of Spring, the planned seventh and possibly final installment of the series.

Although Martin has been making progress on The Winds of Winter, it is slow going, especially as the author is very involved in the various Game of Thrones projects being developed at HBO. One of those projects is a potential Game of Thrones movie. HBO chief Casey Bloys recently confirmed it was in the works and that Martin was involved in the process. “They’re going to develop [an] idea,” Bloys said. “We’ll see if it’s good. We’ll read the scripts along with them. I think it could be fun and interesting. I mean, that’s the point of development, you see is there a story that’s worthy of being in theaters and a big spectacle? I think it would be fun.

A third season of House of the Dragon is on the way, with another spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, set to debut on HBO in 2025. There have been a number of Game of Thrones projects which have been scrapped, including a Jon Snow series which Kit Harington has said is now on the shelf. “Currently, it’s off the table, because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough,” Harington said. “So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf.

If you were a betting person, would you put money on Martin finishing The Winds of Winter?

Scream 7, Asa Germann

Deadline reports that Asa Germaan (Gen V) has joined the cast of Scream 7. As you might expect, details on who Germann will be playing are being kept under wraps.

The upcoming sequel will see the return of Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott. After playing the role in the first five Scream movies, she was expected to return for the sixth until the studio low-balled her. “As a woman, I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream,” Campbell said. “I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise. It’s been a very difficult decision to move on.” Hopefully, they apologized with a dump truck of cash this time around. Courteney Cox is also expected to return as Gale Weathers, but she hasn’t officially signed on yet. It’s also possible that Patrick Dempsey might be returning as Mark Kincaid (now married to Sidney) from Scream 3. It was recently announced that Isabel May (Yellowstone: 1883) had joined the cast as Sidney’s teenage daughter. Celeste O’Connor (Madame Web) has also signed on.

The original plan for Scream 7 would have seen Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega returning as Sam and Tara Carpenter, but Spyglass Media fired Barrera after a few pro-Palestinian social media posts that they deemed anti-Semitic. The very next day, it was revealed that Ortega had exited the project as well. It was initially reported that this was due to scheduling conflicts with the second season of Wednesday, but it later emerged that she had wanted a substantial salary increase, which Spyglass refused, so she walked.

That wasn’t the end of the drama either. Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day) was set to direct the movie, but he also departed, calling it a “dream job that turned into a nightmare.” The studio then turned to Kevin Williamson, screenwriter of the original Scream movie, to direct. Upon the announcement, Neve Campbell said, “While I’ve been so incredibly lucky to make these films with both the master of horror Wes Craven and the wonderfully talented Matt and Tyler team, I’ve dreamt for many years of how amazing it would be to make one of these movies with Kevin Williamson at the helm. And now it’s happening, Kevin Williamson is going to direct Scream 7! This was his baby and it’s his brilliant mind that dreamt up this world. Kevin is not just an inspiration as an artist but has been a dear friend for many years.Scream 7 is slated for a February 27, 2026 release.

Asa Germaan plays Samuel Riordan on Gen V, a Supe student at Godolkin University with super-strength. He’s expected to return for the second season, which will debut on Prime Video in 2025.

Kingsman, Taron Egerton

The lackluster box office of the last installment of the Kingsman franchise seems to have put a halt on Matthew Vaughn’s action-packed spy saga. As an added nail to the coffin, 20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell told THR in October that there were “no plans” for any Kingsman sequels or prequels “anytime soon.” However, Kingsman star Taron Egerton would still like to do one more movie to bring the story of Eggsy to a close.

I think… I don’t know, and I don’t want to speak out of school, but I don’t think that necessarily means that we won’t do it,” said Egerton while speaking with ScreenRant. “I think Matthew and I very much want to do one more. I want to do one more. And so while, you know, we don’t have a shoot date yet, I think it could still happen.

Kingsman: The Secret Service debuted in 2015 and grossed $415 million against a budget of around $80 million. It was followed by Kingsman: The Golden Circle in 2017, which took in $410 million worldwide on a budget of $104 million. The next film was a prequel taking place in the early 1900s and detailed the beginnings of the Kingsman organization. Unfortunately, the film was a box-office bomb, grossing just $125 million worldwide. Vaughn revealed last year that he has written a sequel to The King’s Man, titled The Traitor King. “The next one is about the rise of Hitler, and how Hitler did come to power and basically was supported by the English aristocracy,” Vaughn said. “So I was like, ‘Well, that’s interesting’, and how the world was worrying so much about Communism that Fascism rose up. And I look at the world at the moment, everyone getting distracted and worrying about this [and that] and if you worry too much about [this] bad things can happen here. So it is a story that I think needs to be recalled.

While I’m not sure if we’ll ever get that sequel to The King’s Man, I’m slightly more optimistic about another Kingsman movie. What do you think? Do you want to see Taron Egerton return for one more Kingsman movie?

He also stars alongside Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Robbins, and Rashida Jones in Silo, a sci-fi series based on the Silo trilogy of novels by author Hugh Howey.
