Scrubs, reboot

Are we heading for a Chocolate Bear and Vanilla Bear reunion? It’s possible now that a Scrubs reboot is in development at ABC, with series creator/executive producer Bill Lawrence returning to the O.R. The promising update about Lawrence’s Scrubs reboot comes after lengthy negotiations with Warner Bros. TV, where Lawrence has an overall deal and four series. After sorting all the details, Lawrence can develop a follow-up series for Disney’s 20th TV and ABC. While Lawrence is on board for the reboot, he will not be the show’s showrunner.

After securing Lawrence for the in-demand project, the challenge of assembling original cast members from the original series can begin. According to Deadline, Zach Braff, who plays John “J.D.” Dorian, Sarah Chalke (Elliot Reid), Donald Faison (Christopher Turk), and John C. McGinley (Perry Cox) could return for more comedic hospital drama shenanigans. Absent from the list is Judy Reyes, who plays the straight-shooting nurse Carla Espinosa in the original series. Reyes left the series before its final season, though sources say her character factors into early episodes of the reboot. Reyes is a series regular on ABC and 20th TV’s popular new drama series High Potential, so the jury on her involvement remains out.

“Big chunks of the creative team behind the camera, and most of it from in front of the camera, are all super invested and excited,” Lawrence told Deadline in October. Lawrence says he plans for the new show to be a hybrid between a revival and a reboot. He wants to revisit old characters but also introduce new ones.

“We’ve been talking about a lot, and I think the only real reason to do it is a combo,” Lawrence said in October. “A: people wanting to see what the world of medicine was like for the people they love, which is part of any successful reboot. But B: I think that show always worked because you get to see young people dropped into the world of medicine, knowing young people that go there are super idealistic and are doing it because it’s a calling. There’s no cliché ‘rich doctors playing golf’ — that’s not what it is anymore. So I think that, no matter what it is, it would be a giant mistake not to do as a combo of those two things.”

Scrubs fans have been asking for a revival of the beloved medical sitcom for years, but they have yet to see their demands met. Thankfully, it sounds like dreams are about to come true. Wonder Twin’s powers of Chocolate Bear and Vanilla Bear activate!

You’ve really got to hand it to director James Mangold – he knows how to direct the heck out of a big-screen biopic. After making one of the classic biopics of the 2000s, Walk the Line, which brought Johnny Cash’s tumultuous life to the big screen, he’s back with A Complete Unknown. This one charts the first seven years of Bob Dylan’s career, from his early days as a protege of folk singer Pete Seeger (played by Edward Norton) and climaxing in his controversial decision to go “electric”, the movie is earning early raves for star Timothee Chalamet’s performance as Dylan.

In fact, Dylan himself recently took to X to promote the film, writing, “There’s a movie about me opening soon called A Complete Unknown (what a title!). Timothee Chalamet is starring in the lead role. Timmy’s a brilliant actor so I’m sure he’s going to be completely believable as me. Or a younger me. Or some other me. The film’s taken from Elijah Wald’s Dylan Goes Electric – a book that came out in 2015. It’s a fantastic retelling of events from the early ‘60s that led up to the fiasco at Newport. After you’ve seen the movie read the book.”

While it sounds like Dylan hasn’t actually seen the film yet, I was lucky enough to get a very early look at the film last night, and found myself utterly immersed in this biopic, with Chalamet just as good as everyone says he is. I’ll post my full review when the embargo breaks next week, but it’s up there with The Brutalist and Nosferatu as one of my favourite movies of the year. It even functions as a quasi-sequel to Walk the Line, with Cash a supporting player in the film, with Boyd Holbrook filling in for Joaquin Phoenix.

A Complete Unknown opens on Christmas Day!

Harry Potter TV series, HBO

HBO is ready to meet the cast and crew of its upcoming Harry Potter TV series on Platform 9 3/4 at King’s Cross Station. They’ll then board a train to Leavesden this summer to begin production. Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and EP Mark Mylod surprised the attendants of a Max Showcase in London to reveal the official start of her “very very specifically British 1990s production.”

The latest big-budget Harry Potter project has thousands of young actors looking to land the roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione. 32,000, to be exact. The Harry Potter TV series says it’s adhering to the “canonical” ages of specific characters. Still, others are likely to change, including the Dursleys, who will be younger in the show. Gardiner says the cast will experience a “bigger sandpit to play in” when her Harry Potter TV series begins.

Yesterday, The Hollywood Reporter said that Paapa Essiedu could play the role of Severus Snape, a thorn in Harry’s side and friend to the boy with the lightning bolt scar’s fallen parents. Essiedu’s potential casting was met with immediate vile and venom from a subsection of angry fans, who say the actor fails to resemble the pasty Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher’s description. Previously, a casting call asked for all races, ethnicities, and gender identities to audition for many roles.

There’s been no official casting on the Harry Potter TV series yet, but Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) is said to be close to signing on to play Albus Dumbledore. The casting process for the three leading kids has begun. An open call was put out for children who are residents of the U.K. and Ireland and will be between the ages of 9 and 11 in April 2025 to play Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger. Succession’s Francesca Gardiner will serve as a writer and showrunner on the series, while Mark Mylod signed on to executive produce and direct multiple episodes. The project was originally developed for Max but made the leap to HBO (along with various other Max shows) in June.

PLOT: A woman (Amy Adams) who gave up her career as a stay-at-home mom begins to think she’s turning into a dog.

REVIEW: I don’t know why, but when I first heard the premise for Nightbitch, I assumed it was going to be a horror movie. I’m definitely not the only one, as if you Google the film, it’s still classified as horror, and the posters make it look like dark, edgy fare. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that Nightbitch, despite its provocative title, is actually a sweet tribute to motherhood and the pressures therein, similar to Jason Reitman’s Tully

It’s a good little movie, with Amy Adams getting her best role in a couple of years as the increasingly harried and unnamed protagonist (she’s credited only as mother). Once a noted bohemian artist, her days mostly consist of caring for her toddler son, with her sense of isolation growing more potent by the day. Her husband (Scott McNairy) is a nice enough guy, but he takes her for granted and is somewhat oblivious to how, as her life has becomes solely defined by her role as a wife and mother, she’s lost her identity.

While it sounds serious, director Marielle Heller approaches Nightbitch with a light touch. She’s non-judgemental and presents Mother as a bit of her own worst enemy in some ways in that she only ever vocalizes her frustrations in fantasy sequences. But, when she thinks she’s becoming a dog, with fur sprouting out of her back and her teeth suddenly becoming sharper, she becomes somewhat liberated and starts to regain her sense of self.

Certainly, this movie will cut close to the bone for any parent with a young child. It’s probably a good one to watch together as a couple, as Heller’s script tries to be fair to everyone, including the husband who, in a simpler film (such as Tully), would be presented as oafish. Here, he vocalizes his own frustrations and isn’t shown to be constantly off base, with McNairy always sympathetic.

Nightbitch review

Yet, this is a showcase for Amy Adams more than anything, and certainly, you’ve never seen her like this before. In a performance utterly without vanity, we get to watch her go to the dogs, literally, as she goes down on all fours playing with the pups she meets at the park and shoves her face into a bowl of Mac-and-cheese (with meatloaf on top) at the grocery store. Heck, we even get to see Amy Adams sing a Weird Al Yankovic song (“Dare to be Stupid”) in perhaps my favorite needle drop of the year.

Nightbitch is Heller’s fourth film, and like all of her other movies, it’s slickly made, with excellent cinematography by Brandon Trost. She’s always had a good sense of pacing, with her accomplishing quite a bit in a movie that runs just a hair over ninety minutes. It also has some nice, empathetic moments, with characters that initially seem vacuous showing surprising depth, and a nice supporting role for Phantom of the Paradise & Suspiria legend Jessica Harper, who, between this and last year’s Memory, seems to be making a very welcome comeback.

While horror fans will be disappointed to learn this isn’t the quasi-Amy Adams werewolf movie we all wanted, Nightbitch is still a nice little flick that would make for a great night out at the theatre for new parents. Just expect a heavy conversation on the drive home.

The Chucky TV series may have gotten the ax, but we all know that the base will never let the franchise die. It’s just so embedded in the horror spirit that we’ll always come back to it and the fan favorite characters. And for Jennifer Tilly, that means forever being linked to Tiffany, something she might literally take to her grave.

Sitting down with Interview, Jennifer Tilly acknowledged that Tiffany is without a doubt her signature character and the role she’ll best be remembered for, despite an Oscar nomination for Bullets Over Broadway. And for that, she has the hardcore fans to thank. “I’ve come to terms with the fact that when I pass away, people are going to leave Chucky dolls on my grave, and I’m fine with that. When the internet happened, because when I started out there was no internet, I realized that Chucky and Bride of Chucky are these huge cult phenomenons. The Chucky fans are the greatest fans in the whole world…They’re very fanatical, but they’re very, very loyal, and they’re really smart.”

While there are hopes for Chucky and Tiffany to continue on, nothing is definite at this point. But Jennifer Tilly is almost certain that she will be playing Tiffany again and again. “I’ve done four movies and three seasons of the TV series, and I have a feeling I’m going to be doing Chucky probably until the day before I finally pass into spirit, as Sally Kirkland would say. Maybe I do my last little cameo on Chucky where he’s chasing me…”

Introduced in 1998’s Bride of Chucky when the Child’s Play franchise was in desperate need of fresh blood. An immediate hit with fans, Tiffany would be as much of a staple in the Child’s Play movies/TV show as Chucky himself, being fleshed out (so to speak) in a way that sidekicks are rarely given. Now, every year, you’re guaranteed to see a few Tiffanys around Halloween, while their beaus have to suck it up and wear denim overalls.

What do you think Jennifer Tilly and Tiffany brought to Child’s Play? What is your favorite scene of hers?

Grab a badge and bring enough donuts for the entire precinct because another spinoff of ABC’s The Rookie is in early development. The project hails from Lionsgate Television and 20th Television, with The Rookie creator Alexi Hawley writing the latest offshoot.

According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, The Rookie spinoff is “set in Washington state, the potential spinoff follows a male cop who is stepping into a new phase of life in his second act. It keeps the major midlife change concept of the Los Angeles-set original series, which started off with Nathan Fillion’s John Nolan switching careers to become the oldest rookie in the LAPD.”

Hawley is doing more than picking up his pen. He’s also an executive producer of The Rookie spinoff alongside Nathan Fillion, Michelle Chapman, and Bill Norcross, whose real-life informed the core series. The Rookie is a tremendous success for ABC, with a seventh season premiering on January 7, 2025. The Rookie focuses on John Nolan (Fillion), who, after a life-altering incident, is pursuing his dream of joining the LAPD. As their oldest rookie, he’s met with skepticism from those who see him as just a walking midlife crisis.

“Fans are still discovering that show and will continue for years to come. That’s the staying power of a good drama,” said Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich. With that in mind, Hawley took advantage of a network’s blind script commitment, which resulted in the upcoming spinoff.

The first spinoff for The Rookie franchise, The Rookie: Feds, stars Emmy winner Niecy Nash-Betts as Simone Clark, the oldest rookie in the FBI Academy. In the show, Simone Clark is assigned to support the LA field office. The show ran for 22 episodes from 2022 to 2023.

Hawley’s other project, The Recruit, stars Noah Centineo as Owen Hendricks, a CIA lawyer who becomes involved in massive international conflicts with dangerous parties after an asset tries to expose her relationship with the agency.

Speaking with Tudum.com, The Recruit creator, showrunner, and executive producer Alexi Hawley teased the events of Season 2, saying, “Owen rolls into this season basically screwed. Owen knows that if he does not walk away with a win this season, his career is going to be over. He might go to prison. Depending on what people are into, they can show up this season for the big, flashy, splashy action stuff, but they can also be on a journey with this guy who’s just trying to fix something that he broke.”

Are you excited about The Rookie getting another spinoff? Did you enjoy The Rookie: Feds? Who should take the lead role in Hawley’s new show? Let us know in the comments section below.
