Month: December 2024

Arrow Video has unveiled their February Blu-ray lineup, hitting some major titles that will find viewers cruising the streets of New York City, dining with the Sawyer family and fending off space vampires.

Arriving on February 25th from Arrow will be William Friedkin’s Cruising, which is being featured in a limited edition 4K release, notably restored from the original camera negative. While you’ll see some previously available special features, the set has some new extras. They include:

Brand new commentary featuring original musicians involved with the soundtrack

I Want to Be the Curator, a brand-new interview with actress Karen Allen

Walking the Line, a brand-new interview with actor, film consultant, and former police detective Randy Jurgensen

Breaking the Codes, a brand-new visual essay surrounding the hanky-codes featuring actor and writer David McGillivray

Cruising also comes with a 120-page perfect-bound collector’s book with photos, articles and essays, as well as a reversible sleeve featuring new artwork by Sister Hyde.

Arrow also has The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 arriving, with the sequel hitting shelves one week earlier on February 17th. Along with a 4K restoration from the original negative in 2160p, you can expect a lot of goodies, including special packaging, a booklet with new essays, postcards, and even a chili cook-off recipe. While the packaging is new (and incredible), those who dig the original artwork that spoofed The Breakfast Club will be happy to know that a reproduction is also included in the set. TCM 2 is a bit light on new special features, but does have some solid-sounding additions:

Are We Not Both the Living Dead?, new visual essay by Scout Tafoya

You’ve Got Good Taste: Cannibal Camp and Perverse Parody, new visual essay by Miranda Corcoran

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2

Also arriving on February 17th is another Tobe Hooper essential, Lifeforce. Like TCM 2, Lifeforce is a bit light on new material but it does feature both the 116-minute International Cut and the 101-minute Theatrical Cut, immediately making it a must-own for fans. There, too, is new artwork and a collector’s booklet with writing on the movie.

Be sure to check out Arrow Video’s website for more details for in-depth details of the special features, technical specs and more, as well as other titles arriving in February.

Elizabeth Olsen

Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail and Julia Roberts have worked together multiple times already. She starred in the series Homecoming, which he co-created; he was an executive producer on the limited series Gaslit, which she starred in; and she starred in his thriller Leave the World Behind, which was a big hit for the Netflix streaming service, landing on their list of Top 10 Most Popular Movies. As of right now, Leave the World Behind stands as Netflix’s fifth most popular English-language film of all time, with 143.4 million views. Esmail and Roberts are set to continue their working relationship with another thriller, this one called Panic Carefully, and Deadline reports that Elizabeth Olsen (WandaVision) has signed on to star in the film alongside Roberts.

Esmail will be directing Panic Carefully from his own screenplay. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the project is being described as “a paranoid thriller in the vein of Esmail’s Emmy and Golden Globe winner Mr. Robot, as well as The Silence of the Lambs.

The project went out to assorted studios and streamers earlier this year, kicking off an intense bidding war. Warner Bros. came out the winner of that bidding war, and Deadline notes that their victory was “in part due to their commitment to a theatrical run.” So, while Esmail and Roberts had great success taking Leave the World Behind to streaming, they want this one to get more play on the big screen. (Leave the World Behind got a limited theatrical release about two weeks before it started streaming.)

Esmail and Chad Hamilton are producing Panic Carefully for Email Corp. Roberts is also producing the film, as are Scott Stuber, Marisa Yeres Gill, and Lisa Gillan. Kevin McCormick and Chrystal Li are overseeing the project for Warner Bros. Filming will take place in England and cameras are expected to start rolling in January.

This will be the first time Esmail and Olsen have worked together, and the same goes for Olsen and Roberts.

It’s time to saddle up and ride with dual-wielding teasers and first-look images for Taylor Sheridan’s 1923 Season 2. The Western epic starring Academy Award winner Helen Mirren (The Queen, Gosford Park, RED) and Academy Award nominee Harrison Ford (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Shrinking) will premiere Sunday, February 23, exclusively on Paramount+.

“In the second season of 1923, a cruel winter brings new challenges and unfinished business to Jacob (Ford) and Cara (Mirren) back at Dutton ranch. With harsh conditions and adversaries threatening to end the Dutton legacy, Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) embarks on an arduous journey home, racing against time to save his family in Montana. Meanwhile, Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer) sets off on her own harrowing trans-Atlantic journey to find Spencer and reclaim their love.”

In addition to Mirren and Ford, 1923 stars Brandon Sklenar, Julia Schlaepfer, Jerome Flynn, Darren Mann, Brian Geraghty, Aminah Nieves, Michelle Randolph, Sebastian Roché, Timothy Dalton, and Jennifer Carpenter. The Dexter alumna, Carpenter, joins the 1923 Season 2 cast as Mamie Fossett, a capable United States Deputy Marshal based on the real-life woman of the same name. Fossett and S. M. Burche were the first women ever to do active duty as U.S. Marshals. They joined the ranks in 1898.

Recurring guest stars include Jerome Flynn (Banner Creighton), Darren Mann (Jack Dutton), Brian Geraghty (Zane), Aminah Nieves (Teonna Rainwater), Michelle Randolph (Elizabeth Dutton), Sebastian Roché (Father Renaud), and Timothy Dalton (Donald Whitfield).

Today’s 1923 Season 2 teasers preview the continuation of Sheridan’s expansive story, with danger closing in on all sides. The first teaser finds Spencer fighting to return home, his nose bleeding and dread filling his strained eyes—the second shows Jacob and Cara gearing up for a deadly confrontation. Before the second teaser ends, we get a glorious shot of Cara firing off a round from her trusty firearm. It’s glorious.

In addition to dropping 1923 Season 2 teasers, Paramount+ shared a gallery of first-look images of characters and anticipated moments from the upcoming season. The return of 1923 is months away, but today’s promotional materials should give fans something to look forward to.

Werewolves seem to be going through a bit of a comeback. From The Wolfman to The Beast Within, it certainly feels like there’s more happening within the subgenre than ever before. Yet they do often feel very…samey. They often involve a man being bitten by a mysterious creature and then having to fight the urges of his werewolf counterpart. This is why it’s so exciting that we’re finally getting a film involving Werewolves that breaks the mold and does something different. And boy oh boy is it different. With an entire planet filled with Werewolves and practical FX that are sure to satisfy, this is the Werewolf movie we’ve always wanted. You can check out my glowing review of Werewolves HERE.

I was fortunate enough to talk to star Frank Grillo and director Steven C. Miller about all things Werewolves. Grillo is always the man (check out when he shouted us out) so it was a blast to pick his brain about the film. And given the parallels between The Purge and Werewolves, his inclusion feels all the more apropos. Ever since Silent Night I’ve considered Miller an underrated director and he continues to prove it with every new film. Werewolves shows us just enough of the creatures, always cutting away at the appropriate moments, allowing the practical FX to flourish. Sometimes big lumbering creature suits can be a little slow on camera, so the editing really comes through here, giving us believable Werewolves. Check out the interview above and make sure you check out Werewolves in theaters. We need more films like this.

Werewolves plot:

A supermoon event has triggered a latent gene in every human on the planet, turning anyone who entered the moonlight into a werewolf for that one night. Chaos ensued and close to a billion people died. Now, a year later, the Supermoon is back….

Lionsgate is bringing light in darkness, unveiling a character poster for Ana de Armas’ Eve Macarro, the titular ballerina of the upcoming John Wick spin-off movie, adding to the already peak anticipation for this expansion.

As you can see on the poster, Eve is tatted up, with one notable phrase standing out above the rest: Lux in Tenebris, which is Latin for Light in Darkness. That might feel a little on the nose, but it does give us a better glimpse into her psyche – especially when she’s got a gun in her hand. The poster has incredible coloring to it, too, which plays off of the trailer quite nicely. Check it out:

In the trailer that was released in September, we saw a familiar face right away, Winston Scott (Ian McShane), who approaches a young Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas) and offers to bring her to a ballerina school. Except these are no ordinary classes and soon she is prepped with: “To stop the assassin, you must become the assassin.” From there, it was cleverly set to Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer” – but this ballerina isn’t exactly dancing in the sand, instead positioning herself as someone you don’t exactly want to tango with. And for those wondering, yes, Keanu Reeves does turn up in the trailer, with Eve stating, “You’re him. The one they call the Baba Yaga. How do I start doing what you do?”

While we will have to wait until June 6th for Ballerina to hit theaters, everything we’ve been given so far should hold us at least for a while. While the four John Wick movies have easily marked themselves as some of the best action movies to come out of the century – with plenty holding the argument that it’s one of the finest action franchises ever – we all got a little skeptical of the purpose of expanding once Peacock’s The Continental disappointed.

But based on the materials released up to this point, I’m expecting amazing things that fit well into the John Wick universe (hey, it’s right there in the clunky official title, too: From the World of John Wick: Ballerina). For the sake of understanding the narrative, Ballerina takes place between the events of 2019’s Parabellum and last year’s John Wick 4, hence the more battered John Wick.

In addition to Reeves and McShane, Ballerina will also bring back Anjelica Huston and the late Lance Reddick, with the film marking his final posthumous appearance. It will also introduce Gabriel Byrne, Norman Reedus and Catalina Sandino Moreno into the mix.

Are you looking forward to Ballerina? Where do you see the John Wick franchise going from here?

PLOT: A supermoon event has triggered a latent gene in every human on the planet, turning anyone who entered the moonlight into a werewolf for that one night. Chaos ensued and close to a billion people died. Now, a year later, the Supermoon is back…

REVIEW: It feels like werewolves are going through a bit of a resurgence. It may not be as crazy as slashers in the early 80s or zombie films in the 2000s, but it’s hard to deny. From The Beast Within, Werewolves Within, to The Wolf Man, lycanthropic endeavors seem on the rise. And who better to lead some Werewolf mayhem than action star extraordinaire, Frank Grillo! In Werewolves, a supermoon event turned anyone who touched moonlight into a werewolf one year prior. Billions of people died and it was a global tragedy. Now, the Supermoon is back and the world must prepare for the monster mayhem to come.

I’ve really been enjoying this place that Frank Grillo has taken up in cinema. When you need an action hero who can bring a ton of levity to a role, there’s no one better suited these days. And Grillo appears to be having an absolute blast here, blasting away werewolves and acting as the de facto leader. His character Wesley is trying to aid scientists as they research the werewolves but he also has his brother’s family at home, who he must protect. Outside of Grillo, no intriguing character’s really exist. But that doesn’t really matter because this is mostly about following Wesley and his journey back to his family. Or well…his brother’s family. I assume this was done in an attempt to avoid a more stereotypical plot thread. Wesley is making the choice to save them, it’s not an obligation.

What starts as an event the government is hoping to study and learn from becomes a fight for survival as they quickly learn they’re no match for these werewolves. There are some interesting ideas like Katrina Law’s scientist character being in love with one of the Werewolves. Or the group of civilians used to test the effects of the Full Moon. But neither of these concepts is really developed to a satisfying conclusion. They’re more just elements that get lost once the story gets going.

Oddly enough, I actually found some parallels between Werewolves and The Purge (a different series that Grillo has appeared in). This is one night of the year when chaos reigns supreme and our lower classes are the most vulnerable, while the rich just wait for the night to pass in their bunkers. The big difference is when the actual insanity begins, there’s a lightness to the werewolf mayhem. These aren’t human beings killing others for some kind of revenge/political gain, these are just animals out for blood.

One of the most satisfying elements of Werewolves is the practical FX. There’s nothing worse than a fun werewolf story getting brought down by CGI monstrosities. And even practical can be a hard line to walk, as they have to be shot correctly to still maintain any sense of realism. Thankfully, the Dog Soldiers approach is used here, with large, suited monsters that are hinted at sometimes, and fully shown at others. Usually we just get one or two monsters but there’s a line that seems to indicate there are billions of them. Obviously, we don’t see them nearly to that scale but it’s clear that nearly every inch of earth, walks a lycanthrope. There are so many different werewolves that I lost track of all the different designs. A good problem to have.

Director Steven C. Miller feels like he’s leveled up with his filmmaking, shooting a very tight and well-paced action film. He’s really able to stretch a dollar and put it all in the frame. I was consistently impressed with how large-scale the story got, while never feeling overly hampered by its lack of money. This was a perfect balancing act of an indie film trying for a larger scope and scale. And it never lets its low budget hamper its main mission: to entertain. Whether it’s limbs being ripped off, a massive Gatling gun, or a racist neighbor clearly set up to be a shithead, the name of the game is fun.

I had an absolute blast with Werewolves to the point where I was grinning ear to ear throughout the duration. Werewolves have always gotten the short end of the stick yet this finally feels like they’re getting their due. They’re prominently featured and never treated as a joke, giving us some fantastic visuals. This is still very much an indie film so don’t go in expecting a $100 Million blockbuster. But doesn’t mean you won’t have blockbuster levels of fun. This reminded me how much I love those big Bad Moon/Dog Soldier-style creatures and I hope this results in more of them. Because Werewolves is one helluva ride.
