Month: January 2025

A while back, we shared a Best Movie You Never Saw video on the action thriller Sniper, which was given a theatrical release in 1993 and spawned a direct-to-video franchise that is continuing to this day. In fact, a trailer for the eleventh film in the franchise, Sniper: The Last Stand, has just arrived online and can be seen in the embed above. The film is set to receive a digital release on January 21st.

Tom Berenger took on the lead role of sniper Thomas Beckett in the original film, and came back for Sniper 2 (2002) and Sniper 3 (2004). As of 2011’s Sniper: Reloaded, Thomas’s son Brandon, played by Chad Michael Collins, became the lead character in the franchise, and his story has continued through Sniper: Legacy (2014), Sniper: Ghost Shooter (2016), Sniper: Ultimate Kill (2017), Sniper: Assassin’s End (2020), Sniper: Rogue Mission (2022), Sniper: G.R.I.T. – Global Response & Intelligence Team (2023), and now Sniper: The Last Stand. Berenger returned for appearances in Legacy, Ultimate Kill, and Assassin’s End, while Billy Zane, his co-star in the first movie, showed up in Reloaded, Ghost Shooter, and Ultimate Kill. Neither Berenger nor Zane seem to be in The Last Stand.

Directed by Danishka Esterhazy, whose credits include The Banana Splits Movie and the Slumber Party Massacre remake, from a screenplay by Sean Wathen (Escape the Field), Sniper: The Last Stand has the following synopsis: To stop an arms dealer from unleashing a deadly superweapon, the Ace sniper Brandon Beckett and Agent Zero are deployed to lead a group of elite soldiers in Costa Verde. Taking an untested sniper under his wing, Beckett faces his newest challenge: giving orders instead of receiving them. With time and ammo running low, they must overcome all odds just to survive.

Chad Michael Collins is joined in the cast by Ryan Robbins, who has been co-starring in these films as Agent Zero since Assassin’s End, as well as Sharon Taylor, Manuel Rodriguez-Saenz, and Arnold Vosloo.

Are you a fan of the Sniper franchise, and will you be watching Sniper: The Last Stand when Sony releases it later this month? Check out the trailer, then let us know by leaving a comment below. I have been following this series from the start, and will definitely be watching this new addition.

euphoria, colman domingo

The third season of HBO’s hit controversial show Euphoria has been delayed due to a bevy of reasons, but HBO boss Casey Bloys said last month that the series should commence very soon. “We are shooting Euphoria,” Bloys said. “I think we have a start date, mid to late January. Nothing’s changed. Somebody said something online, and then this whole thing started. We are shooting the season. I have read the scripts. We’re happy. We’re moving ahead. All of the actors are in the show.“

Very little is known about this season. Apparently, even one of the show’s breakout stars, Colman Domingo, hasn’t yet seen a script, but he has been hyped about returning ever since discussing it with the series creator, who is coming off of the equally controversial HBO series The Idol. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Domingo appeared on an episode of the U.K.’s Table Manners podcast with Jessie and Lennie Ware and shared his excitement about this upcoming season. When talking about what he has coming up, Domingo said,

I go back to my show Euphoria — I haven’t read [the script] but [creator Sam Levinson] told me some of it, and it’s going to be groundbreaking.”

That’s not the only thing the actor has on his plate. Domingo is getting into the director’s chair for the first time for Scandalous. The movie will come from Miramax and has been fast-tracked to start production. Domingo is planning to start filming after completing season 3 of Euphoria and he’ll be bringing along his co-star Sydney Sweeney along for the film. Sweeney is also on board as producer and will be active in its development. The plot of the drama is about the clandestine love affair between film star Kim Novak and singer/dancer and film star Sammy Davis Jr. in 1957. Sydney Sweeney will play Novak, and David Jonsson will play Davis Jr.

On the acting front for Domingo, he reportedly joined Steven Spielberg’s newest top-secret UFO event movie. Domingo’s castmates include Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer), Colin Firth (Kingsman: The Secret Service), and Eve Hewson (Hedda). As for the project itself, we don’t know much about it, only that it’s said to be a UFO movie based on Spielberg’s own original idea, with David Koepp (Jurassic Park) writing the screenplay. Universal Pictures has already slated the project for a May 15, 2026 release.

Domingo has been enjoying a hell of a run over the last year. He earned an Academy Award nomination for his role in Rustin and has won praise for his work on Sing Sing and The Color Purple. He’s also playing Joe Jackson in the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic directed by Antoine Fuqua which will be released on April 18, 2025.

Steve Guttenberg

In trying times, many of us are reminded of Mr. Rogers’ famous quote: “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” But never did we expect to find such a soul in Steve Guttenberg – it’s not because of him (we love Guttenberg!), but just that it seems so unexpected. And judging by a recent news video, he’s not doing it for praise; he’s doing it because he’s a good man.

As brush fires rage in Los Angeles’ Pacific Palisades, homes and lives are being destroyed, with more than 3,000 acres of the region seeing impact. One person doing his part to help is Steve Guttenberg, who took time for a brief interview with KTLA (via People). As he explained to the reporter, “If anybody has a car and they leave the car, leave the keys in the car so that we can move the car…What’s happening is people take their keys with them as if they’re in a parking lot. This is not a parking lot. We really need people to move their cars. If you leave your car behind, leave the key in there so a guy like me can move your car so that these fire trucks can get up there. It’s really, really important.”

At first, the reporter didn’t recognize Steve Guttenberg, asking the Good Samaritan his name. Only when he was buzzed in the ear did the reporter mention that his interviewee was an actor. But Guttenberg continued with the interview to focus on the necessity of getting people in the area the help they need. It’s definitely cool to see Guttenberg, now in his mid-60s, not looking to take credit for his good deeds, instead being approached by the media to see what an “average Joe” was doing.

The brush fires are spreading rapidly in the Los Angeles area, having started just Tuesday morning. While the cause is not yet known, efforts have been well underway to control the fires and help residents evacuate.

While most noted for his work in the ‘80s and ‘90s through movies like Cocoon, Police Academy and Short Circuit, Steve Guttenberg has still kept busy in the 2020s, recently joining series Paper Empire.

Scream

Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures once intended to make a Scream 7 that would have starred Scream (2022) and Scream VI leads Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, with Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon at the helm. But then Ortega allegedly asked for a substantial pay raise – and as we saw when Neve Campbell dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute, these pay issues don’t tend to work out. Then Barrera was fired from the project after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass. Landon dropped out the of the project soon after. So Scream 7 has been re-developed, Campbell has signed on to return as franchise heroine Sidney Prescott, back in the lead role, while Kevin Williamson, who wrote the screenplay for the original Scream, directs the film from a screenplay by 2022’s Scream and Scream VI writer Guy Busick, who crafted the story with his co-writer on the fifth and sixth films, James Vanderbilt. (Vanderbilt is also a producer on the most recent sequels.) Scream 7 is set to reach theatres on February 27, 2026 and filming is now underway – and after the first day of filming wrapped, Williamson took to social media to celebrate.

Sharing a picture of a Scream 7 clapperboard, Williamson wrote, “I’m not supposed to post about Scream and I hope Spyglass and Paramount will forgive me but when you have one of the best days of your life it’s really hard to keep it to yourself. What an extraordinary day I had working with an amazing and talented cast and crew. They brought their “A” game and had my back every step of the way. I’m so very grateful for this opportunity and to Wes Craven who was on my mind through it all. The profound impact he has had on my life and career is endless. What a day! I can’t wait for tomorrow!

In addition to writing the original Scream, Williamson has also written I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream 2, The Faculty, and Halloween H20 (where his script contributions were uncredited). He wrote the initial drafts of Scream 3 and Scream 4, then those both received some major rewrites. Williamson made his directing debut with the 1999 thriller Teaching Mrs. Tingle. Scream 7 will be his second directing credit.

Neve Campbell is joined in the cast by Isabel May of the Yellowstone prequel 1883, who has signed on to play Sidney’s daughter; Mckenna Grace of the Ghostbusters franchise, Grace’s Ghostbusters co-star Celeste O’Connor, Gen V‘s Asa Germann, The Fabelmans‘ Sam Rechner, Pitch Perfect‘s Anna Camp, fellow franchise star Courteney Cox, who reprises the role of reporter / author Gale Weathers, and Mason Gooding of 2022’s Scream and Scream VI, back as Chad Meeks-Martin. Patrick Dempsey has had discussions about reprising his Scream 3 role of Detective Mark Kincaid, but we haven’t heard if he signed a deal or not.

Want to hear some rumors / possible character spoilers? A while back, industry scooper Daniel Richtman claimed that Scream 7 has the following character line-up: Taylor (17-18) – Sidney’s daughter. Brian (17-18) – is Taylor’s boyfriend. Chelsea (17-18) – the heartbreaker of the group. Holly (17-18) – Taylor’s rich friend, the queen bee of the group. Logan (17-18) – Taylor’s hot, but creepy neighbor with a Ted Bundy vibe. Jennifer (40s-50s) – Logan’s mom and Sidney’s friend. So look over the cast list and see which actor you think matches which character.

Carry On, Netflix Top 10

Carry On was released on Netflix less than four weeks ago, but the action thriller has already become one of the streaming service’s most popular movies.

The film has taken the fifth spot on Netflix’s Top 10 Most Popular Movies of All Time with 149.4 million views. This places it ahead of Leave the World Behind, The Grey Man, Damsel, We Can Be Heroes, and The Mother. As Netflix counts views from the first thirteen weeks, it’s almost certain that Carry On will be moving up this list.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by TJ Fixman, Carry On stars Taron Egerton as a young TSA agent who must fight to outsmart a mysterious traveller (Jason Bateman) who blackmails him into letting a dangerous package clip onto a Christmas Eve flight.

Given the film’s popularity, I imagine Netflix might be considering a potential sequel, something Egerton teased when he spoke with JoBlo. “I think the thing about Carry On is…he’s a guy who is not really sure of who he is and he’s thrust into these sort of extraordinary circumstances and he rises to the occasion,” Egerton said. “But he’s a bit lost, I think, in this movie and you kind of see him just struggling to keep up for most of the film. And at the end of the film, you see a guy who’s a bit more sure of himself. So I think if we were ever lucky enough to get a second bite of the apple, I’d probably want to see him be a little more…fully realized, a little bit more certain of himself.

Carry On has received largely positive reviews, but our own Tyler Nichols wasn’t totally satisfied. “Ultimately, Carry-On feels like more of a whimper than a bang. For everything that works, there are a multitude of things that don’t,” Nichols wrote. “Even so, I still have a soft spot for these kinds of films and Jason Bateman‘s performance is absolutely electric. If you don’t let the logic of it all ruin it for you, then this is an interesting thrill ride. But I have a very hard time recommending it as it doesn’t really bring anything new to the table.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.

Were you one of the viewers who have helped propel Carry On up the Netflix Top 10 list? What did you think of the film, and would you be interested in a sequel?

James Mangold, Star Wars

One of the many Star Wars projects in development is a story which will take place 25,000 years before the Skywalker Saga and explore the first Jedi and the discovery of the Force. That’s further in the past than the Star Wars franchise has ever gone, and that’s exactly why James Mangold was interested in it.

The Star Wars movie would be taking place 25,000 years before any known Star Wars movies take place,” Mangold explained to MovieWeb. “It’s an area and a playground that I’ve always [wanted to explore] and that I was inspired by as a teenager. I’m not that interested in being handcuffed by so much lore at this point that it’s almost immovable, and you can’t please anybody.

The era encompassing the Skywalker Saga is steadily growing with new movies and TV shows, but Mangold wanted more freedom to craft his story. “To me, the really important aspects are the freedom to make something new,” he said. “Beau Willimon and I, in relation to Star Wars, have been working on a script, and we’ll see what happens. Do we find a way on the page to say something original?” Given how many Star Wars projects have been announced over the last decade, only to languish in development hell, I’m not about to place any bets on whether Mangold’s movie will see the light of day, but it would be something different.

Mangold’s A Complete Unknown is now playing in theaters, and our own Chris Bumbray loved the Bob Dylan biopic. “It’s one of the year’s most entertaining movies,” Bumbray wrote in his review, “with Mangold’s film so good that I hope he’s got a few Dylan sequels in him, as it truly left me wanting more.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.

Here’s the official synopsis for A Complete Unknown: “Set in the influential New York music scene of the early 60s, A Complete Unknown follows 19-year-old Minnesota musician Bob Dylan’s (Timothée Chalamet) meteoric rise as a folk singer to concert halls and the top of the charts – his songs and mystique becoming a worldwide sensation – culminating in his groundbreaking electric rock and roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.” In addition to Timothée Chalamet, A Complete Unknown stars Edward Norton, Elle Fanning and Monica Barbaro. The film also co-stars Boyd Holbrook, Dan Fogler, Norbert Leo Butz, and Scoot McNairy.

Bret Easton Ellis, American Psycho, reboot

Just last month, it was reported that Austin Butler was being considered to star as Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino’s new adaptation of American Psycho. However, American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis said on his podcast (via World of Reel) that he thinks it’s all just “fake news.

I have a feeling it’s fake news,” Ellis said. “I heard somewhere, from someone, that there are no contracts. Austin Butler hasn’t signed anything to play Patrick Bateman. Luca doesn’t have a deal. Scott Burns, who is supposed to write the screenplay, doesn’t have a deal either. From various sources that I have, this is just fake news that was put out there to see how an audience is going to react.

Even if the American Psycho project is legit, Ellis isn’t involved in any capacity. “If it does exist, I am not involved, I have nothing to do with this,” Ellis explained. “I might get some money if they do this, but I am not involved creatively on any level, and that is all I know.

This year happens to mark the 25th anniversary of Mary Harron’s American Psycho. The film starred Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, and although it divided critics upon its release, it has gone on to become a cult classic. The thought of remaking it is seen as sacrilegious to some, but when has that ever stopped Hollywood? The initial report of the American Psycho reboot said Luca Guadagninomight have interpreted the Patrick Bateman character in a much different way than its previous incarnation.” I’m certainly ready to give Guadagnino the benefit of the doubt, and I’ll be watching if the project moves forward.

The American Psycho synopsis reads: “Patrick Bateman is a young, handsome, Harvard-educated Wall Street success, seemingly perfect with his stunning fiancé and entourage of high-powered friends. But his circle of friends doesn’t know the other Patrick Bateman, the one who lusts for more than status and material things. With a detective hot on his trail and temptation everywhere, Patrick Bateman can’t fight his terrible urges that take him on the pursuit of women, greed and the ultimate crime – murder!
