Rumor: Marvel Studios developing a new The Punisher TV show?

The nine episode first season of the Marvel series Daredevil: Born Again is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on March 4, 2025 – and while there was once an idea to cherry-pick elements from the Netflix Daredevil show and build something new around them, those plans changed while Daredevil: Born Again was in production. The Netflix series is now canon to the Disney+ show, which evolved into a direct follow-up, picking up five years later. Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Elden Henson, Deborah Ann Woll, Wilson Bethel, and Ayelete Zurer reprise the roles of Matt Murdock / Daredevil, Wilson Fisk / Kingpin, Murdock’s associates Foggy Nelson and Karen Page, Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter / Bullseye, and Vanessa Marianna Fisk. Jon Bernthal is also back as Frank Castle / The Punisher, who made his debut on the Daredevil series before getting his own Netflix series. There have been rumors that The Punisher might be revived on Disney+ just like Daredevil is being revived – and now, industry scooper Daniel Richtman has said there might be some truth to this. He wrote, “Marvel Studios is reportedly developing a new The Punisher show.“

During a recent interview with Phase Hero, Marvel Head of Television and Streaming Brad Winderbaum was asked if we can expect to see Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher show up in MCU projects beyond the upcoming episodes of Daredevil: Born Again. He answered, “100%. He’s definitely great in the role. can’t wait for you to see him in this series. There is absolutely a future for him in the MCU afterwards.“

When Netflix’s Daredevil became canon to the MCU, the rest of the Netflix Marvel shows, which Daredevil crossed over with, were also pulled into the MCU. Meaning that The Punisher, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders are all part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Speaking of Jessica Jones, there are also rumblings about Krysten Ritter reprising that role – hopefully soon.

A Grimm reboot is emerging from the shadows of a dark forest at Peacock from Josh Berman & the original series’ creative team

Something wicked is coming to Peacock in the form of a Grimm reboot movie. That’s right, folks! Peacock is developing a reboot of the 2011 NBC series, with Drop Dead Diva creator Josh Berman writing and executive producing the project alongside the original series’ creative team. The Grimm reboot also finds original series co-creators/executive producers and showrunners David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf joining the effort, with producer Lynn Kouf, Sean Hayes, and Todd Milliner’s Hazy Mills Productions and Universal Television.

The original series starred David Giuntoli as Portland Homicide detective Nick Burkhardt. After discovering he’s a Grimm, the last line of defense between humanity and mythological creatures, he uses every trick in the book to solve mysteries and maintain order in a world brimming with nightmarish creatures and unlikely allies.

Berman and the team behind the Grimm reboot won’t reveal the plot of the upcoming series, but sources say it could tie into the original series, albeit loosely. The mission is to make the Grimm reboot something old heads want to see while welcoming new viewers.

Grimm is a cult favorite series among fans of supernatural storytelling. The original show ran for six seasons, peaking in the 2011-2012 season. Akin to shows like Supernatural, Sleepy Hollow, and Mayfair Witches, Grimm reimagines fairytale creatures and characters with a mature edge, bringing some of the most terrifying bedtime stories to life on the small screen.

In addition to Drop Dead Diva, Josh Berman has been a producer on shows like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Vanished, The Mob Doctor, Bones, and The Blacklist. We hear the goal is to launch a Grimm franchise if the new show is successful. The original Grimm series starred David Giuntoli, Russell Hornsby, Silas Weir Mitchell, Sasha Roiz, Reggie Lee, Elizabeth Tulloch, Bree Turner, and Claire Coffee. It remains unclear if any actors from the original series will reprise their roles for the Grimm reboot.

Is Will Smith joining the Matrix universe? A mysterious post is driving fans wild with the possibilities

In 1997, the Wachowkis offered Will Smith an opportunity to star in their generation-defining sci-fi epic The Matrix, but the Fresh Prince actor turned it down to make Wild Wild West. Yeah. Poor life choices aside, audiences have remained curious about what a Matrix film starring Will Smith would look like. According to a mysterious post on Smith’s Instagram account, they could get their wish. Stop the presses! Could Will Smith play Neo in The Matrix 5? Let the speculation commence!

After Warner Bros. released The Matrix Resurrections in 2021, the studio confirmed The Matrix 5 is in development. Sadly, the Wachowski sisters won’t direct the project. However, WB’s got Cabin in the Woods helmer Drew Goddard going behind the camera.

On Monday, Will Smith posted a cryptic video that harkens back to the original Matrix film. In the video, a typed message tells Will to “wake up.” The message reads, “What would the Matrix have been like with Will Smith as Neo?” The video then reveals that the Matrix has him, leading fans to believe Smith is leading the next film in the Matrix franchise.

What does this mean? Your guess is as good as mine, but I’d bet Smith will replace Keanu Reeves as Neo for the next Matrix movie. While that move could sound like sacrilege, it wouldn’t be the first time the franchise recasts primary characters. In The Matrix Resurrections, Jonathan Groff played Agent Smith instead of Hugo Weaving, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II played a version of Morpheus rather than Laurence Fishburne.

If Smith steps into the role of Neo, could other characters get recast? Does The Matrix 5 continue the story, or is the fifth live-action film a reboot? Goddard could present an in-universe reason for Smith replacing Reeves, but it might be better to start from scratch. Regardless of the plan, Smith getting the chance to revisit the Neo role all these years later is wild. Will fans of the franchise warm to Smith’s portrayal? Will Smith’s Neo exhibit a personality similar to Reeves’s? I have so many questions.

The Monkey: Stephen King adaptation shares a ratings board report on the trailer that’s coming on Wednesday

Back in March, we heard that production had wrapped on the Stephen King adaptation The Monkey, which is coming our way from the team of producer / genre regular James Wan and director Osgood Perkins, whose credits include The Blackcoat’s Daughter (a.k.a. February), I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, Gretel & Hansel, and the recent Nicolas Cage horror film Longlegs (you can read our review HERE). Longlegs was released by Neon – and they’ll also be giving The Monkey a theatrical release on February 21, 2025. We’ve seen a teaser trailer for the movie before (you can watch it in the embed above), but now it has been revealed that a full trailer will be dropping this Wednesday – and ahead of that, Neon has shared the Motion Picture Association ratings board’s report on the trailer! You can check it out at the bottom of this article.

Perkins wrote the screenplay for The Monkey, working from a King short story. The film will tell the following story: When twin brothers Hal and Bill discover their father’s old monkey toy in the attic, a series of gruesome deaths starts occurring all around them. The brothers decide to throw the monkey away and move on with their lives, growing apart over the years. But when the mysterious deaths begin again, the brothers must reunite to find a way to destroy the monkey for good before it takes the lives of everyone close to them.

Theo James (The White Lotus) plays the twins in later years, while Christian Convery (Sweet Tooth) plays them in their younger days. Also in the cast are Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings), Tatiana Maslany (She–Hulk: Attorney at Law), Colin O’Brien (Wonka), Rohan Campbell (Halloween Ends), and Sarah Levy (Schitt’s Creek).

James Wan and Michael Clear are producing The Monkey for Atomic Monster, while Jason Cloth and Dave Caplan produce for C2 Motion Picture Group. Executive producers include Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Fred Berger of Automatik, Peter Luo and Nancy Xu of Stars Collective, John Friedberg of Black Bear, and Chris Ferguson. Atomic Monster and Stars Collective developed the project, and C2 Motion Picture Group provided the financing.

Wan previously provided the following statement: “Stephen King is the godfather of the horror genre. He had a huge influence on me as a child and throughout my career and it’s always been a dream to help bring one of his stories to life. The Monkey is a personal favorite, with its simple, iconic, and incredibly marketable conceit. And I can’t imagine anyone better than a visionary and lifelong genre fan like Osgood to bring this to life.“

In addition to directing the films mentioned at the top of this article, Perkins directed an episode of the recent revival of The Twilight Zone. He has also worked on the screenplays for the thriller Removal, the crime thriller Cold Comes the Night, and the horror film The Girl in the Photographs.

The Motion Picture Association ratings board has given The Monkey an R rating for strong bloody violent content, gore, language throughout and some sexual references. Their report on the trailer we’ll be seeing on Wednesday can be read below, or you can click HERE to blow up and clarify the image.
