Shining Vale

The horror comedy series Shining Vale premiered on Starz back in March of 2022, then the second season reached the airwaves in October of 2023. Unfortunately, it was cancelled soon after, as it “did not find a large enough audience to continue.” But Starz went further than just cancelling this show, they also it from their archives, removing from the Starz streaming service at the end of 2023. A year later, Shining Vale has now resurfaced and is available to watch on the Max streaming service!

Created by Jeff Astrof and Sharon Horgan, the first season of Shining Vale followed a dysfunctional family that moves from the city to a small town into a house in which terrible atrocities have taken place. But no one seems to notice except for Patricia “Pat” Phelps, who’s convinced she’s either depressed or possessed – turns out, the symptoms are exactly the same. Pat is a former “wild child” who rose to fame by writing a raunchy, drug-and-alcohol-soaked women’s empowerment novel (a.k.a. lady porn). Fast forward 17 years later, Pat is clean and sober but totally unfulfilled. She still hasn’t written her second novel, she can’t remember the last time she had sex with her husband, and her teenage kids are at that stage where they want you dead. She was a faithful wife until her one slip-up: she had a torrid affair with the hot, young handyman who came over to fix the sink while Terry was at work. In a last-ditch effort to save their marriage, she and Terry cash in all their savings and move the family from the “crazy” of the city to a large, old house in the suburbs that has a storied past of its own. Everyone has their demons, but for Pat Phelps, they may be real.

Shining Vale stars Courteney Cox as Patricia “Pat” Phelps, Greg Kinnear as Pat’s husband Terry, Merrin Dungey as Pat’s friend and book editor Kam; Gus Birney and Dylan Gage as Pat and Terry’s teenage kids Gaynor and Jake; Mira Sorvino as Rosemary, “who is either Pat’s alter ego, a split personality, her id, her muse, or a demon trying to possess her”; Sherilyn Fenn as realtor Robyn Court; and Judith Light as Joan, “Pat’s Lithium-infused mother, who has long battled mental illness, and her daughter… (who she blames for her mental illness). Joan is vain and hyper-critical, taking any opportunity to recall her prized youth, or belittle Pat. Of all the horrors that Pat faces, becoming Joan is the most frightening – and most real.”

As reported on Deadline, “the Warner Bros. Discovery streamer Max has picked up the two seasons of horror comedy, produced by sibling Warner Bros. Television which at the time of the December 2023 cancellation tried to find a new home for it. Made available January 1st, the series shot up to #3 on the platform within its first 24 hours on Max.”

Shining Vale was produced by Lionsgate and Warner Bros. Television, in association with Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, Astrof’s Other Shoe Productions, and Horgan and Clelia Mountford’s Merman. Astrof, Horgan, Mountford, Kaplan, and Dana Honor were all executive producers, while Cox was a producer. The pilot episode was directed and executive produced by Dearbhla Walsh.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Super Smash Bros, Ben Scwartz

With movies like Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog franchise leveling up at the box office, film adaptations of video games are finally being taken seriously in Hollywood. Though many see Mario and Sonic as competitors, times regarding crossovers and team-ups across rival IPs are changing. While walking the blue carpet for Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s premiere, Sonic voice actor Ben Schwartz told Variety that a team-up of epic proportions could happen as a Super Smash Bros. movie. While nothing is in the works, a film based on Nintendo’s legendary platform fighting game would be monumental, and now I can’t stop thinking about the possibilities.

When asked if there’s a Sonic crossover he’d like to see, Schwartz told Variety, “There’s two things I would love. I love Chris Pratt. I think he’s amazing, and he plays Mario — which we probably shouldn’t talk about in this interview — but the “Olympic Games” is great. What I really think could be bananas is if we get a “Super Smash Bros.” spinoff, but that would take so many different studios being kind to each other at the same time. But the idea that we get to build our own franchise that lives on its own, and we have so many characters within this franchise, that we can do three, four, five, six — that’s what I’m concentrating on and that’s what I love. If you want to have a battle royale with a bunch of people we all love in video games, because I’m a video game nerd, I would not be against it.”

Schwartz is correct about many studios needing to “play nice” for a Super Smash Bros movie to become a reality. Nintendo is scarily protective of their in-house IP, and the fact that Smash Bros exists is a miracle in and of itself. The paperwork alone would be enough to drive lawyers insane. However, stranger things have happened, and if the studios can agree to terms, a Super Smash Bros movie would destroy box office expectations. We’ve seen cool crossovers in Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph, but a Smash Bros movie would require a whole other level of filmmaking. Imagine seeing Link from The Legend of Zelda alongside Capcom’s Mega Man, Namco’s Pac-Man, Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog, and Nintendo’s roster of iconic characters all battling on the big screen. I would ascend, and I’m sure others would, too.

What do you think about Ben Schwartz’s wish for a Super Smash Bros. movie? Is it possible? Are we still several movies away from a project like this? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

On Halloween, Sony Pictures unveiled a red band teaser trailer for the Valentine’s Day-set horror romantic comedy Heart Eyes – which is the video embedded above. The film’s director, Josh Ruben (who previously brought us Werewolves Within and Scare Me), has taken to social media to let it be known that the full trailer will be dropping online next week – but while we wait for that to come along, the Motion Picture Association ratings board has revealed that they’ve given Heart Eyes an R rating for strong violence and gore, language and some sexual content.

Heart Eyes has the following synopsis: When the Heart Eyes Killer strikes Seattle, a pair of co-workers pulling overtime on Valentine’s Day are mistaken for a couple by the elusive couple-hunting killer. Now they must spend the most romantic night of the year running for their lives. Ruben previously provided the following statement: “My love of horror is rivaled only by my love of romantic comedies. I’m excited as hell to mount my most challenging genre bender to date: a brutal slasher in a nostalgic rom-com universe.“ Christopher Landon and Michael Kennedy, a duo that had previously worked together on the body swap slasher Freaky and the time travel slasher Time Cut, wrote the screenplay with Phillip Murphy (The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard).

Olivia Holt of Totally Killer and Mason Gooding from the two most recent Scream movies star alongside Jordana Brewster (The Fast and the Furious), Devon Sawa (Final Destination), and Gigi Zumbado (The Price We Pay).

Heart Eyes is set up at Spyglass, and Republic Pictures has picked up distribution rights to the film outside of the U.S. and Canada. Landon is producing the film with Divide/Conquer’s Greg Gilreath and Adam Hendricks. Spyglass’ Gary Barber and Chris Stone serve as executive producers with Murphy and Mel Turner.

What do you think of the reasons given for Heart Eyes‘ R rating? Are you looking forward to this slasher movie? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Heart Eyes is set to reach theatres on February 7, 2025. February 14th is a Friday in 2025, so that would seem to be the perfect choice for this movie’s release date, but it was already taken by Disney/Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World, so Sony had to move it to the week before Valentine’s Day. Its competition on that date is the Universal action movie Love Hurts, starring Ke Huy Quan.

Se7en, David Fincher, 4K, restoration

David Fincher is already making headlines in 2025 as he prepares to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his 1995 thriller, Se7en, with a 4K restoration on Blu-ray on January 3. Before tackling the grim and gritty world of a deranged serial killer, Fincher shot music videos for artists like Madonna, Paula Abdul, Steve Windwood, Gypsy Kings, Billy Idol, and others. His moody and atmospheric style was too unique to be remanded to music videos alone, and with 1992’s Alien 3, Hollywood had a new premiere filmmaker. Learning about Fincher’s filmmaking methods is something aspiring filmmakers and fans love to experience, and thanks to Collider‘s Peri Nemiroff, we know where Fincher’s head is at with the restoration of Se7en, a film many consider a pillar of the crime-thriller genre.

Concerning Fincher’s approach to restoring a classic, he explained to Nemiroff where he feels he must draw the line, careful not to lose the integrity of the original while offering something polished. There’s lots of movie magic that goes into restoration, and if you know the tricks, you can execute some clever workarounds. For example, Fincher told Nemiroff about a scene where two unnamed actors (wink) are meeting at a bar to discuss their collective ennui about the case in front of them.

“In this case, there was this unasked-for and unearned camera pan where a character moved, and then the camera panned over to follow them but followed them late and overshot them and ended up seeing more of the bar than was intended,” Fincher explained. “But the performance in it was so good that we went with it. Well, in this case, we can take that and go, ‘What’s the issue here with stabilizing this pan that happens at such an inopportune time?’ There was no issue in terms of the background. We had enough of the background, but at the beginning of it, we had cleaved off one of the actor’s shoulders, and he’s wearing a black leather jacket, and there’s no data. We don’t know how that shoulder connects to the sleeve and the kind of supple wrinkling and deformation of the leather in that jacket. So I asked, ‘Based on these other takes that we have, can we restore this jacket so that I can take this pan out because this pan happens at such a clumsy time? It’s right as I want to watch a reaction, and the camera’s moving.” And we didn’t know if we could.”

Thankfully, Fincher has roughly four or five great shots of the jacket. He used AI to replicate the article of clothing, creating a complete look for the scene. Fincher says the process is the “most thrillingly stupid fix” for a problem that would have been increasingly difficult to eliminate before advanced AI techniques. While filmmakers can use AI for evil, especially in the interest of art theft and generative art tool training, it’s nice to hear there are less nefarious uses for the technology.

Will you watch David Fincher’s 4K restoration of Se7en when it hits shelves? What other film in Fincher’s library would you like to get the 4K treatment? Let us know in the comments section below.

Brec Bassinger

The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that production has wrapped on Grizzly Night, a fact-based “nature run amok” movie that marks the first feature project for a newly launched production company called FourJFilms. The film stars Charles Esten (Outer Banks), Brec Bassinger (Stargirl), Oded Fehr (The Mummy), Jack Griffo (The Thundermans), Josh Zuckerman (Oppenheimer), Joel Johnstone (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), and Matt Lintz (Ms. Marvel).

Directed by Burke Doeren, Grizzly Night centers on the courageous actions of a young Glacier National Park ranger to help keep visitors safe amid two grizzly bear attacks in the summer of 1967.

Doeren and Kellie Doeren of 22 Waves Creative are producing the film with Lauren Call. Tyson Call, the founder of FourJFilms, serves as an executive producer. Grizzly Night filmed outside of Park City, Utah, and The Hollywood Reporter notes that FourJFilms “aims to prioritize productions that will shoot in Utah, with a focus on independent filmmakers and message-driven dramas.”

Tyson Call provided the following statement: “We are thrilled to share Grizzly Night with audiences. This project is the culmination of years of passion and dedication, and I am excited to continue creating impactful stories through this new production company. Collaborating with such a talented cast and crew, as well as working alongside Burke, Kellie and Lauren, has been a remarkable journey.

Burke Doeren added, “Grizzly Night is a film that carries an important message of respecting nature and wildlife — and that’s absolutely what drew us to want to tell this story as a feature film. We only have one planet, and we need to respect it and the animals who inhabit it with us. We’re very thankful that our brilliant cast and crew connected so deeply with this story and that we’re able to bring it to the screen.

While it doesn’t sound like this will be quite the rampaging, bloodthirsty bear movie I would like to see (you know, something along the lines of Grizzly and Cocaine Bear), it could still turn out to be something interesting.

Viola Davis, G20, thriller, release date

While many of us are used to seeing Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, a ruthless woman craving power and control in the DC Universe, the Academy Award-winning actress is capable of multitudes. Viola Davis constantly reinvents herself to bring powerhouse performances to audiences, and in Patricia Riggen’s upcoming action-thriller G20, she takes a presidential role not to be taken lightly. On Thursday, Prime Video announced an April 10, 2025, release date for G20, alongside other details.

Patricia Riggen (The 33, Under the Same Moon, Girl in Progress) directs G20 from a script by Caitlin Parrish, Erica Weiss, Logan Miller, and Noah Miller, with a story by Logan Miller and Noah Miller. According to Prime Video’s official description, G20 follows U.S. President Danielle Sutton (Viola Davis), who becomes the number one target after the G20 summit – an intergovernmental forum comprising 19 sovereign countries, the European Union (EU), and the African Union (AU) – comes under siege. After evading capture by the attackers, she must outsmart the enemy to protect her family, defend her country, and safeguard world leaders. The film will be available to stream in over 240 countries and territories worldwide.

“This is Viola Davis as you’ve never seen her—heroically kicking tons of ass in a global thrill ride,” said Riggen. “With G20, I wanted to make the kind of classic, edge-of-your-seat action film that I’ve always been such a fan of, but one that draws on the high stakes of our modern and technologically advanced world we live in. I hope to give audiences an experience that will captivate them from start to finish.”

Starring alongside Viola Davis in G20 are Anthony Anderson as Derek Sutton, Marsai Martin as Serena Sutton, Ramón Rodríguez as Agent Manny Ruiz, Douglas Hodge as Oliver Everett, Elizabeth Marvel as Joanna Worth, Sabrina Impacciatore as Elena Romano, Christopher Farrar as Demetrius Sutton, and Antony Starr as Rutledge.

G20 is a high-stakes action film with a lot of heart,” said producers Davis and Julius Tennon. “It boasts a fantastic ensemble cast, and is rooted in the fundamental drive we all have to protect the people and places that matter most to us,” said producer Andrew Lazar.

I don’t know about any terrorists, but I would not want to mess with Viola Davis on any day of the week. I enjoy watching her in positions of power, and I could see her playing a world leader on par with Harrison Ford’s President James Marshall from Wolfgang Petersen’s Air Force One. If Davis screams, “Get out of my summit,” and kicks a terrorist in the breadbasket, I’m going to lose my mind.
