We have some very sad news to report today, as the family of David Lynch has taken to social media to confirm that the legendary filmmaker, who would have turned 79 on January 20th, has passed away. His family wrote, “It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.“
Just last year, Lynch revealed that he was homebound and on oxygen due to emphysema – but that didn’t mean he had any intention of retiring. Although Lynch hadn’t directed a feature film since Inland Empire in 2006, but he did follow that up with many short films, as well as all 18 episodes of Twin Peaks: The Return and videos for some of the songs from Cellophane Memories, the new music album he sent out into the world last summer with Chrystabell (copies of the album are available to order at THIS LINK). Even though he would only be able to direct remotely, he was interested in doing more. He had also let it be known that he was hoping to make an animated film called Snootworld, which was rejected by the Netflix streaming service, but that he was thinking of passing the helm of that one over to a different director.
Born in Missoula, Montana on January 20, 1946, Lynch got his filmmaking career started by making shorts in the late ’60s. Over the decades, he went on to direct the likes of, among many other credits, Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Dune, Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, Lost Highway, The Straight Story, Mulholland Drive, the aforementioned Inland Empire, and episodes of the Twin Peaks TV series, which he co-created with Mark Frost. Lynch also wrote the scripts for many of his directorial efforts.
As it turns out, a brief cameo in Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans would be the last cinematic contribution from an artist whose legacy will be felt for generations to come.
Outside of film, he was a painter and enjoyed working on music projects. A student and advocate for transcendental meditation. Lynch was known for having a bizarre public persona that was vastly different from the actual down-to-earth man behind the pompadour and dark clothes.
Lynch was married four times and is survived by his last wife, Emily Stofle, as well as his four children: Jennifer, Austin Jack, Riley, and Lula.
Our sincere condolences go out to David Lynch’s family, friends, and fans. Cinema has lost a giant and a pioneer.

Summon the lawyers! After months of rumors, accusations, and disagreements about what happened between Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively on the It Ends With Us set and beyond, Baldoni is taking the feud to another level by suing Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, for $400M. Baldoni, who directed and starred alongside Lively in the 2024 romantic drama, filed the lawsuit in New York on Thursday, alleging extortion, defamation, and claims related to a breach of contract, among other complaints. In Baldoni’s corner are his film studio, Wayfarer and its chief executive, Jamey Heath, and their public relations representatives, Melissa Nathan and Jennifer Abel.
The lawsuit names Leslie Sloane, Lively’s public relations representative at Vision PR, in addition to Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds. Bryan Freedman, Baldoni’s lawyer, stated the lawsuit, saying the case is “based on an overwhelming amount of untampered evidence detailing Blake Lively and her team’s duplicitous attempt to destroy Justin Baldoni, his team and their respective companies by disseminating grossly edited, unsubstantiated, new and doctored information to the media.”
Baldoni’s lawyer didn’t stop there. “It is clear based on our own all out willingness to provide all complete text messages, emails, video footage and other documentary evidence that was shared between the parties in real time, that this is a battle she will not win and will certainly regret,” Freedman said, adding fuel to the fire.
The drama surrounding It Ends With Us reportedly began when Baldoni became upset about not getting photographed with the cast at the film’s New York premiere. Baldoni then failed to present the film alongside Lively and Hoover at the illustrious event. Oddly, none of the film’s stars follow Baldoni on social media, save for Hasan Minhaj. Social media is a significant part of PR for cinema, with cast and crew sharing photos, leaving comments, and hyping the project’s release. Baldoni was not a part of that process, or at least that’s how it appeared to fans online. Watercooler whispers also point to Lively and Baldoni having disagreements about the film’s final cut, with Lively’s version ultimately being the one to play in theaters.
To complicate matters, Ryan Reynolds reportedly helped Lively write a scene in the film’s final cut, possibly raising credit issues with the WGA. There’s also the matter of production for It Ends With Us, which started three days after the WGA strike began. Reynolds is a proud member of the WGA. He could have violated the organization’s rules if he had helped write a scene after the strike began. Baldoni’s Wayfarer Studios also holds the cinematic writes to It Ends With Us as if those issues were insufficient.
Additionally, Baldoni takes umbrage with Reynolds’ Nicepool character from last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine. According to Freedman, Justin believes the character is an attempt to mock him on a grand scale. As reported by Variety, Freedman sent a litigation hold letter to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Disney CEO Bob Iger, demanding that the studio “preserve evidence” related to the character of Nicepool, including:
The letter also asks for “all documents and communications relating to complaints of sexual or other harassment asserted against Ryan Reynolds by any person.” During an appearance on The Megyn Kelly Show, Freedman said that he plans to sue Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively “into oblivion.”
We know now that Baldoni is making good on that promise by suing Lively, Reynolds, and others for $400M. Window watchers can expect the dispute to get uglier as it rages on, with lawyers on both sides digging their heels in to emerge victorious.

Last March, we heard that production had wrapped on the Stephen King adaptation The Monkey, which is coming our way from the team of producer / genre regular James Wan and director Osgood Perkins, whose credits include The Blackcoat’s Daughter (a.k.a. February), I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, Gretel & Hansel, and the recent Nicolas Cage horror film Longlegs (you can read our review HERE). Longlegs was released by Neon – and they’ll also be giving The Monkey a theatrical release on February 21, 2025. We’ve seen a teaser trailer for the movie before and today (eight days later than expected), a full trailer for the film has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.
Perkins wrote the screenplay for The Monkey, working from a King short story. The film will tell the following story: When twin brothers Hal and Bill discover their father’s old monkey toy in the attic, a series of gruesome deaths starts occurring all around them. The brothers decide to throw the monkey away and move on with their lives, growing apart over the years. But when the mysterious deaths begin again, the brothers must reunite to find a way to destroy the monkey for good before it takes the lives of everyone close to them.
Theo James (The White Lotus) plays the twins in later years, while Christian Convery (Sweet Tooth) plays them in their younger days. Also in the cast are Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings), Tatiana Maslany (She–Hulk: Attorney at Law), Colin O’Brien (Wonka), Rohan Campbell (Halloween Ends), and Sarah Levy (Schitt’s Creek).
James Wan and Michael Clear are producing The Monkey for Atomic Monster, while Jason Cloth and Dave Caplan produce for C2 Motion Picture Group. Executive producers include Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Fred Berger of Automatik, Peter Luo and Nancy Xu of Stars Collective, John Friedberg of Black Bear, and Chris Ferguson. Atomic Monster and Stars Collective developed the project, and C2 Motion Picture Group provided the financing.
Wan previously provided the following statement: “Stephen King is the godfather of the horror genre. He had a huge influence on me as a child and throughout my career and it’s always been a dream to help bring one of his stories to life. The Monkey is a personal favorite, with its simple, iconic, and incredibly marketable conceit. And I can’t imagine anyone better than a visionary and lifelong genre fan like Osgood to bring this to life.“
In addition to directing the films mentioned at the top of this article, Perkins directed an episode of the recent revival of The Twilight Zone. He has also worked on the screenplays for the thriller Removal, the crime thriller Cold Comes the Night, and the horror film The Girl in the Photographs.
The Motion Picture Association ratings board has given The Monkey an R rating for strong bloody violent content, gore, language throughout and some sexual references.

Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures once intended to make a Scream 7 that would have starred Scream (2022) and Scream VI leads Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, with Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon at the helm. But then Ortega allegedly asked for a substantial pay raise – and as we saw when Neve Campbell dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute, these pay issues don’t tend to work out. Then Barrera was fired from the project after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass. Landon dropped out the of the project soon after. So Scream 7 has been re-developed, Campbell has signed on to return as franchise heroine Sidney Prescott, back in the lead role, while Kevin Williamson, who wrote the screenplay for the original Scream, directs the film from a screenplay by 2022’s Scream and Scream VI writer Guy Busick, who crafted the story with his co-writer on the fifth and sixth films, James Vanderbilt. (Vanderbilt is also a producer on the most recent sequels.) Scream 7 is set to reach theatres on February 27, 2026 and filming is now underway – and in this film, we’ll be meeting Sidney’s husband. Deadline reports that the character is named Mark Evans, and he’s set to be played by Joel McHale (Community).
In Scream (2022), we learned that Sidney had three kids with a man named Mark – and when fans heard that name, they immediately jumped to the conclusion that Mark must be her Scream 3 love interest Mark Kincaid, who was played by Patrick Dempsey. Obviously, that’s not the case. Scream 7 will show us that she’s married to Mark Evans. We know that Dempsey has had discussions about reprising his Scream 3 role in Scream 7, he was just waiting to see the script… but we haven’t heard if he signed a deal or not. There’s a chance that Dempsey’s deal fell through and Mark Kincaid had to be replaced by Mark Evans in a rewrite. But there’s also a chance that we could see Sidney’s husband Mark share the screen with her former love interest Mark. We’ll have to wait and see how it all works out.
Neve Campbell and Joel McHale are joined in the cast by Isabel May of the Yellowstone prequel 1883, who has signed on to play Sidney’s daughter; Mckenna Grace of the Ghostbusters franchise, Grace’s Ghostbusters co-star Celeste O’Connor, Gen V‘s Asa Germann, The Fabelmans‘ Sam Rechner, Pitch Perfect‘s Anna Camp, fellow franchise star Courteney Cox, who reprises the role of reporter / author Gale Weathers, and Mason Gooding of 2022’s Scream and Scream VI, back as Chad Meeks-Martin.
Want to hear some rumors / possible character spoilers? A while back, industry scooper Daniel Richtman claimed that Scream 7 has the following character line-up: Taylor (17-18) – Sidney’s daughter. Brian (17-18) – is Taylor’s boyfriend. Chelsea (17-18) – the heartbreaker of the group. Holly (17-18) – Taylor’s rich friend, the queen bee of the group. Logan (17-18) – Taylor’s hot, but creepy neighbor with a Ted Bundy vibe. Jennifer (40s-50s) – Logan’s mom and Sidney’s friend. So look over the cast list and see which actor you think matches which character.
In addition to writing the original Scream, Williamson has also written I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream 2, The Faculty, and Halloween H20 (where his script contributions were uncredited). He wrote the initial drafts of Scream 3 and Scream 4, then those both received some major rewrites. Williamson made his directing debut with the 1999 thriller Teaching Mrs. Tingle. Scream 7 will be his second directing credit.
