Superman, sneak preview, Puppy Bowl

Many studios choose to unveil big new trailers during the Super Bowl, but Warner Bros. Discovery will reveal the latest look at one of their most anticipated movies of the year during the Puppy Bowl instead. THR reports that a special sneak preview of Superman will debut during the Puppy Bowl, with James Gunn set to appear with his dog Ozu, who was the inspiration for Krypto. The Superman director will also deliver a “special message” to viewers.

The Puppy Bowl (and the Super Bowl, if you’re into that) will air on February 9th. The event features a number of puppies playing with balls and toys in their own little stadium as it raises adoption awareness. “Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl serves as an annual pop culture programming event that continues to expand in reach, awareness and of course, puppies, every year,” said Howard Lee, chief creative officer of U.S. networks and president of Discovery Networks. “Win or lose, Puppy Bowl XXI will have the cutest players in the game on Sunday, February 9 and will inspire families across the country to adopt a new furry friend.

The first teaser trailer for Superman was viewed over 250 million times in the first 24 hours after its release, becoming the most viewed and talked-about trailer in DC and Warner Bros’ history.

Superman stars David Corenswet (Pearl) as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Ms. Maisel) as Lois Lane. The cast also includes Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Guy Gardner, a charismatic and slightly obnoxious member of the Green Lantern Corps; Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as Mister Terrific; Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho; María Gabriela de Faría (Deadly Class) as The Engineer, a member of The Authority; Sara Sampaio (At Midnight) as Eve Teschmacher; Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones) as Jimmy Olsen; Wendell Pierce (The Wire) as Perry White; Neva Howell (Logan Lucky) as Martha Kent; Pruitt Taylor-Vince (The Walking Dead) as Jonathan Kent; and Nicholas Hoult (The Great) as Lex Luthor. Superman is slated to hit theaters on July 11th.

Shrek 5, release delay

The grand return of Shrek will have to wait a little longer. Universal Pictures has pushed back the release of Shrek 5, which will now open on December 23, 2026, instead of July 1, 2025.

Taking Shrek‘s old release date will be Illumination’s Minions 3. The film was previously slated for June 30, 2027, but will now hit theaters on July 1, 2026. An untitled Illumination event movie has also shifted, moving from March 19, 2027 to June 30, 2027.

It’s been fifteen years since the release of Shrek Forever Ever, but the gang is all back for the new sequel. Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz are returning to reprise their roles as Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona, with Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon set to direct. Dohrn worked as a writer on Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third and was also head of story on the fourth movie. He also voiced Rumpelstiltskin. Vernon previously co-directed Shrek 2 and provided the voice of the Gingerbread Man.

Murphy previously teased that he’d already done some recording on Shrek 5 last year and revealed that a Donkey spinoff movie is also in the works. “We started doing Shrek 4 or [Shrek] 5 months ago. I did this, I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up,” Murphy said. “Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a Shrek, and we’re doing a Donkey [movie].

While it’s been a long time since the last Shrek movie, fans did return to the fairy tale universe in 2022 with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The spinoff movie found Antonio Banderas reprising his role as the swashbuckling feline alongside Salma Hayek as Kitty Softpaws and Harvey Guillén as Perrito. In the film, Puss discovers that he’s burned through eight of his nine lives, and in order to get them back, he must find the Last Wish of the fallen Wishing Star. Other fairy tale characters are after the same prize, and Puss is also being stalked by a mysterious wolf.

Mel Gibson, The Last Temptation of Christ, Martin Scorsese

According to Mel Gibson, Martin Scorsese wanted him to star in The Last Temptation of Christ, but the Lethal Weapon actor wasn’t interested.

Interestingly enough, I was in a hotel room in the Savoy and I had food poisoning. I was near dead from it. I ate a bad oyster in London and I was dying in a hotel room and I couldn’t even leave. It was the worst,” Gibson said on the Joe Rogen Experience podcast. “While I was there, Scorsese calls the room and says, ‘Come here, I want to talk to you.’ I go and I talk to Martin and he’s in his room and all the windows, the screens, he’s drawn on. He’s got 18 different TVs going on at the same time in this dark room. He’s talking to me about the ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’ and he wants me to play Jesus and I said, ‘Wow. I’m not doing that.’

Although Gibson didn’t want to take part in the movie, he did praise Willem Dafoe for his performance. “He did something that I think nobody else did and I think he pulled it off because I totally believed it,” Gibson said. “He emptied himself out. He invited something else in. He meditated and let Christ in.The Last Temptation of Christ, which found the biblical figure struggling with lust, fear, and doubt, came under fire from Christian groups upon release, who went so far as to claim the movie was blasphemy.

Gibson went on to direct his own Jesus Christ film, The Passion of the Christ, and is currently working on a sequel that he hopes to shoot next year.

Our next helping of Gibson will arrive with Flight Risk, an action thriller he directed from a script by Jared Rosenberg. The film stars Mark Wahlberg as a pilot transporting an Air Marshall (Michelle Dockery) who is accompanying a fugitive (Topher Grace) to trial. As they cross the Alaskan wilderness, tensions soar, and trust is tested, as not everyone on board is who they seem. The film will hit theaters on January 24th.

Timothée Chalamet, A Complete Unknown, SNL

Very few people serve as both host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live. When it does happen, the host/musical guests are icons such as Elton John, Taylor Swift, Ray Charles, Paul Simon, or Britney Spears. In the history of SNL, only four of the double-duty hosts have been non-professional musicians, with the last being Deion Sanders in 1995 (although Bon Jovi also performed that night). We can soon add Timothée Chalamet to that list as the star of A Complete Unknown will host and serve as the musical guest on the January 25th episode of SNL.

Given the dozens of Bob Dylan tunes Chalamet sings in A Complete Unknown, it’s reasonable to assume that he’ll belt out a few of those, but the actor is also a big fan of rap music, so anything could happen. Might we witness the return of ‘Lil Timmy Tim?

Our own Chris Bumbray was a big fan of A Complete Unknown, particularly the performance of the leading man. “Chalamet is the real deal,” Bumbray wrote. “He makes for a perfect Dylan, with him channelling the man’s iconic appearance and voice without ever coming off like he’s doing a caricature.” Bumbray added that the film is “thoroughly entertaining and really gives you an appreciation for Dylan’s craft and importance, with the film packed with impressively mounted performances of his most essential songs. A Complete Unknown should do what Walk the Line did: it will expose Dylan’s music to a younger audience, as the film plays well to Dylan aficionados, more casual fans (such as myself) and even those who’ve never heard of him. It’s one of the year’s most entertaining movies, with Mangold’s film so good that I hope he’s got a few Dylan sequels in him, as it truly left me wanting more.” You can check out the rest of his review right here

Although Chalamet didn’t take home the Golden Globe, he may still have a shot at an Oscar. If he won, he would become the youngest best-actor Oscar winner in history, beating Adrian Brody by just a few days.

Here’s the official synopsis: “Set in the influential New York music scene of the early 60s, A Complete Unknown follows 19-year-old Minnesota musician Bob Dylan’s (Timothée Chalamet) meteoric rise as a folk singer to concert halls and the top of the charts – his songs and mystique becoming a worldwide sensation – culminating in his groundbreaking electric rock and roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.” In addition to Chalamet, A Complete Unknown stars Edward Norton, Elle Fanning and Monica Barbaro. The film also co-stars Boyd Holbrook, Dan Fogler, Norbert Leo Butz, and Scoot McNairy.
