ballerina, john wick, ana de armas

There are three generally accepted rules for living a long and happy life. 1) You don’t spit into the wind. That’s really just common sense. 2) You don’t tug on Superman’s cape. 3) By God, if you really want to live a long life, you 100%, not under any circumstances, for any reason, F*ck with John Wick’s dog. We have all learned nothing good happens from making John Wick angry. While we’ve already had one spin-off of the successful franchise, the upcoming film Ballerina promises to take us even further into the crazy underworld of one of the most fascinating franchises to emerge in a long time.

John Wick: Chapter 4 shut a few chapters for the franchise, but it's opened up plenty of new ones - where will the franchise go from here?

Where Did Ballerina Come From?

This film began life way back in 2017 as a stand-alone film. Shay Hatten wrote an action script with a female lead called Ballerina. The lead would be a ballerina assassin who goes on a revenge killing spree. Lionsgate picked up the script and decided to bring Hatten on board to rewrite it to make it part of the John Wick universe.

To give it a proper jumping-off point, the ballerina program was shown in John Wick 3, with Anjelica Huston leading the group as The Director. This was used to draw in the audience and make them curious about this other organization. The film was officially pushed forward as Len Wiseman (Underworld) was brought on to serve as director.

Anjelica Huston, Ballerina, Ana de Armas, John Wick

What’s It About?

From the little information available about the film, it seems to be a revenge film set within the John Wick universe. Rooney is our title ballerina who this ruthless organization is training. She plans to use these newly acquired skills to hunt down the people responsible for murdering her family. Nothing quells the soul quite like good old bloody revenge. If the action scenes in the previous Wick films are anything to go by, we’re in for a wild ride.

Ana de Armas, Ballerina, John Wick, Keanu Reeves

Who’s In It?

Once the script was set, it was time to find some actors. Even before Len Wiseman joined the project, it was thought that Lady Gaga might be brought in for the lead role. Once Wiseman was on the project, it was said they were using actress Chloë Grace Moretz as the template for what they were looking for. Her turn in Kick-Ass as Hit Girl had set her up as a badass fighter, and the studio wanted someone similar.

Ana de Armas

Ana de Armas

In 2022, it was announced that Armas had secured the lead role and would lead this new hopeful franchise. The character of Rooney had a small cameo in John Wick 3 but was played by ballerina Unity Phelan. The filmmakers decided to recast her with someone who had more experience. Armas entered negotiations, and with her strong turn in the last James Bond film, it’s easy to see why they chose her.

Anjelica Huston

Anjelica Huston

The legendary actress returns in her role as the Director. This shady organization seems in line with the Black Widow program we saw in the MCU. They take young women and teach them how to become the perfect assassins. Having Huston in this role is excellent and gives it a nice balance with Ian McShane’s character from the Wick movies.

Norman Reedus Daryl

Norman Reedus

While Reedus has had major roles in films like The Boondock Saints and Blade II, he gained popularity in The Walking Dead as Daryl Dixon. He hasn’t done many film roles since, but this is one of his highest-profile roles since the end of the main Walking Dead series. Much hasn’t been released about his role, but it is thought he could be Rooney’s main physical adversary throughout the film.

Hereditary

Gabriel Byrne

Legendary actor Gabriel Byrne will lend his talents as the man behind everything that has gone wrong in Rooney’s life. He brings a grand presence to everything he’s in and will be great in this role. Looking at his range from movies like The Usual Suspects, End of Days, and Hereditary, you know he will bring something unique to the character.

ballerina keanu reeves lance reddick cameos

Returning Characters

Ballerina will be set between John Wick 3 and 4, allowing a few familiar characters to appear even if they are no longer living in the proper series. Ian McShane will be back as the head of the Continental Hotel. Lance Reddick will be seen in his last on-screen role after his sudden death last year. Of course, the biggest appearance will be Keanu Reeves dropping in as John Wick one more time. This is possible due to the film being set before the events of John Wick 4 since we apparently saw his death.

Ian McShane

When Can We See It?

Well, we were originally supposed to see it in June of this year. In February, it was announced that the film would be pushed back by a whole year to June 6, 2025. The reasoning was said to be that they had devised some new action scenes that they wanted to include. Ian McShane, on the other hand, said that after seeing the first cut of the film, they brought in Wick mainstay and Ballerina producer Chad Stahelski to redo large parts of the film to “protect the franchise.” With this extra year, it looks like they were hoping to shore up any weak points. Let’s hope it’s worth it, as extensive re-shoots are not usually seen as a good thing.

Lady Gaga

If you’re gonna have someone like Lady Gaga star in your movie, it only makes sense to have her contribute, in some way, to the soundtrack. Indeed, when she did A Star is Born, Gaga received a Best Actress Oscar nomination, but she also won the award for her contribution to the soundtrack, “Shallow.” While Joker: Folie a Deux is being called a jukebox musical, in that most of the songs are covers of already existing tracks, Gaga has nonetheless recorded a ton of music inspired by the film and the character she plays (Harleen “Lee” Quinzel aka Harley Quinn), and now has announced a companion album called Harlequin, which is a pretty apropos title.

The singer made the announcement via Instagram.

In the posted artwork, Gaga is shown dressed in a very Harley Quinn-esque outfit, with her wearing a life preserver under a running shower head that seems to be washing away her character’s makeup. This marks Gaga’s first release since 2021 when she bowed the album “Love for Sale,” which was an album of duets with the late Tony Bennett. Her last mainstream pop album was 2020’s “Chromatica:, although she had a major hit with her contribution to the Top Gun: Maverick soundtrack, “Hold My Hand”, which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.

Only time will tell whether or not Gaga’s role in Joker: Folie a Deux will live up to her other hit star turns in A Star is Born and House of Gucci (a rare pandemic-era hit). The film was initially tracking for a pretty big box office debut, but industry estimates have cooled ever since word of mouth started to sour around the time it debuted at the Venice Film Festival. Whatever the case, the album “Harlequin” comes out on September 27th, with Joker: Folie a Deux set to premiere on October 4th.

The Exorcist: Believer Ann Dowd David Gordon Green

Universal Pictures and Peacock forked over an amount somewhere in the range of $400 million to acquire the rights to distribute a trilogy of sequels to the 1973 classic The Exorcist, which were going to be another collaboration between Blumhouse Productions and director David Gordon Green (who previously delivered a trilogy of Halloween sequels for Blumhouse and Universal). By the time Green’s first Exorcist movie, The Exorcist: Believer, reached theatres last October, the script for a sequel titled The Exorcist: Deceiver, which was scheduled for an April 18, 2025 theatrical release, was ready and the story of the third film was mapped out… Believer‘s box office numbers were okay, the movie pulled in $137 million on a $30 million budget, but Universal was hoping for a lot better than “okay,” and the reactions were largely negative. (You can read our 4/10 review HERE.) So the plans for The Exorcist: Deceiver were set aside and Green left the project. During a recent interview with IndieWire, Green addressed his departure from the Exorcist franchise and revealed that the second film in his trilogy would have followed Ann Dowd’s character Ann, a former prospective nun turned nurse, and would have been filmed in Europe.

Green crafted the story for The Exorcist: Believer with Danny McBride (who wrote all three of the new Halloweens with him) and their Halloween Kills co-writer Scott Teems, then wrote the screenplay with Peter Sattler (Broken Diamonds). Here’s the synopsis: Since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Victor Fielding has raised their daughter on his own. But when Angela and her friend Katherine, disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil.

Speaking with IndieWire, Green had this to say about what happened behind the scenes as the franchise started to move forward: “It’s complicated. It’s long and complicated. We had our next one written and had it mapped out for the third one. Again, it was ambitious, complicated. We were going to Europe for some pretty extraordinary backdrops. It was one of those things where all of the creative parties got together. What I’m pitching, in terms of my professional ambition is, I need the creative freedom and give me the budgetary constraints so I can keep control of that. That’s something we learned pretty quickly, [with] expectations that are limitless and really daunting. So, for me to keep that creative freedom and be able to make the choices I wanted to make… As you see with the Halloween movies, the choices I make aren’t always the most popular ones. So it’s trying to make something that me, and my great friends at Blumhouse and Morgan Creek, want [for] that property to be fulfilled, as much as the audience is there and has the appetite for it. I don’t think they were on the journey I was excited about taking. … (The Exorcist: Deceiver) was going to follow Ann Dowd’s character.

He went on to say, “All I know is, give me some boundaries and let me loose. If there are a lot of people poking me about ideas and thoughts and notes? I’m not best in those environments. It’s just trying to make everybody get what they need. I’ve made such great friends with so many executives at Universal and Blumhouse and Morgan Creek, I just want to make sure they’re doing what they feel confident in and makes them the most money. Or whatever it is they’re looking for in their satisfying experience. For me, it’s creative freedom. Every time. And I’ll always turn a corner and figure out where the freedom is. And also where the spontaneity is. I like to reinvent myself. … And the other part of me thinks, well, shit, if I could have finished that Exorcist trilogy, I could be financing my own movies for the rest of my life. And that would be super cool if I could have turned that into what I had imagined it being, both creatively and financially. It would have been an amazing opportunity for me as a benefactor to indie movies and my own creative projects. So, that was kind of the goal in mind and it just seemed like that was going to not happen, so I took a different route.

Blumhouse, Universal, and Peacock still intend to complete the trilogy of Exorcist sequels, just without Green’s input. Genre regular Mike Flanagan has since been hired to write and direct an Exorcist film that’s hoping to make the scariest film of his career.

What do you think of what David Gordon Green had to say about The Exorcist: Deceiver falling apart? Would you have liked to see what the film had in store for us, with Ann Dowd returning and European filming locations? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

vince mcmahon

There’s a bit of irony that Vince McMahon — as his character Mr. McMahon — got off on telling people, “You’re firrrred!” and his essentially forced exit from the WWE, which he had founded more than 40 years ago. And the timing couldn’t have been worse, as the six-part documentary Mr. McMahon was intended to go one way but ended up submitting to another: that is, the even darker side of the wrestling icon. And now Vince McMahon is taking aim at the doc, saying it’s an unfair depiction.

Vince McMahon took to social media this week – just a few days ahead of Mr. McMahon’s September 25th debut on Netflix – to dispute the content and reputability of it, saying he saw an early cut that had worked in the new revelations about his life. “I don’t regret participating in this Netflix documentary. The producers had an opportunity to tell an objective story about my life and the incredible business I built, which were equally filled with excitement, drama, fun, and a fair amount of controversy and life lessons. Unfortunately, based on an early partial cut I’ve seen, this doc falls short and takes the predictable path of conflating the “Mr. McMahon” character with my true self, Vince. The title and promos alone make that evident.”

This is something that has been a topic for wrestling fans for quite some time now: where did Vince McMahon end and Mr. McMahon begin? How much crossover was there after all? The more and more WWE fans thought about it – and considered some of the truly gross angles involving the likes of Trish Stratus and Sable, just to name two that involved him directly on camera – it became clear to many that there never really was a distinction.

Vince McMahon added, “A lot has been misrepresented or left out entirely in an effort to leave viewers intentionally confused. The producers use typical editing tricks with out of context footage and dated soundbites etc. to distort the viewers’ perception and support a deceptive narrative. In an attempt to further their misleading account, the producers use a lawsuit based on an affair I ended as evidence that I am, in fact, “Mr. McMahon”. I hope the viewer will keep an open mind and remember that there are two sides to every story.”

The Mr. McMahon persona is a complicated one, but he can really be boiled down to the archetype of the power-tripping boss who will stop at nothing to make sure everyone serves him. Vince McMahon took the character on in 1997 as the Attitude Era — a time when more violence, vulgarity and sexuality was being featured in WWE (then WWF) — dawned. This persona allowed him to engage in feuds with the likes of Bret Hart and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin but also actively engage in storylines that pushed female superstars into more sex-driven content. He also allowed himself to win the 1999 Royal Rumble, but that’s the least of the offenses here…

What do you expect to see in the documentary Mr. McMahon? Are you surprised by Vince McMahon’s tumble?

Almost two years have gone by since A24 announced that production was underway on the psychological horror film The Front Room, with Brandy Norwood (Queens, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer) taking on the lead role and Max and Sam Eggers – the younger brothers of The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman director Robert Eggers – at the helm. The movie made its way out into the world with a theatrical release earlier this month (on September 6th, to be exact), and now it has been given a digital release. It’s available for purchase for the price of $24.99 on Amazon’s Prime Video, or it can be rented for $19.99.

Our review of the film can be found HERE, and you can watch our interview with the leads at THIS LINK.

Based on a short story by Susan Hill, The Front Room has the following synopsis: Everything goes to hell for newly-pregnant Belinda (Brandy) after her mother-in-law (Kathryn Hunter) moves in. As the diabolical guest tries to get her claws on the child, Belinda must draw the line somewhere… If you would like to read the short story source material, it can be found in Hill’s collection The Travelling Bag and Other Ghostly Stories. Copies can be purchased at THIS LINK.

Norwood is joined in the cast by Kathryn Hunter (The Tragedy of Macbeth), Andrew Burnap (WeCrashed), and Neal Huff (Spotlight).

The Front Room was produced by A24, along with Lucan Toh, Babak Anvari, and Bryan Sonderman of Two & Two Pictures, as well as Julia Oh and David Hinojosa of 2AM. A24 financed the project and handled the worldwide theatrical release. The film has received an R rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board for language, some violent/disturbing content, brief sexuality and nudity.

Max Eggers co-wrote The Lighthouse with his brother Robert and was a production assistant on Robert’s 2008 short film adaptation of the Edgar Allan Poe story The Tell-Tale Heart. Sam Eggers was also a production assistant on that short film, and on The Witch. Sam also co-wrote and co-edited the 2018 documentary Olympia, about actress Olympia Dukakis.

Johnny depp

With Amber Heard behind him – and even having retreated to Spain for some time – Johnny Depp is looking to move on. As such, after that much-publicized and -mocked trial between the two, Depp has been pushing through with his career. While his projects may not exactly harken back to the days of Captain Jack Sparrow, he has committed to doing things his own way, something that isn’t exactly out of the ordinary for him. But as he gears up for press for Modì, he couldn’t help but take a dig at the circus that surrounded his scandalous trial.

Appearing at the San Sebastian Film Festival – where Modì (officially titled Modì – Three Days of the Wing of Madness is premiering – Johnny Depp worked in a reference to his issues with ex-wife Amber Heard, saying, “Each [character] has their story because I’m sure we can say that I’ve been through number of things here and there…Maybe yours didn’t turn into a soap opera. I mean, literally, televised.” The trial between Depp and Heard wasn’t only televised, but chronicled in a multi-part Netflix documentary and a ridiculous Tubi movie.

Johnny Depp continued his statement, also reminiscing about his days trying to make it in the business. “But we all go through what we go through. So to see these people on the verge of earning their stripes…There’s something beautiful to me about those days living in a tiny studio apartment just off Hollywood Boulevard in a dangerous neighborhood. They were tough. They were rough, ugly; they were weird, all kinds of stuff, but they were beautiful.”

Modì marks the first time Johnny Depp has directed a feature since 1997’s The Brave. Unlike that film, however, Depp doesn’t appear in Modì, with Riccardo Scamarcio playing titular Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani. The cast also features Al Pacino, Stephen Graham, Antonia Desplat, Batrice Hastings, and Bruno Gouery. The film will be released on December 5th following a showing at the Rome Film Festival.

Johnny Depp most recently played Louis XV for director Maïwenn in Jeanne du Barry, with his continued industry support facing backlash from fans of Amber Heard.

Do you think Johnny Depp will have a full rebound within the public eye? What do you hope he explores next?

Frank Grillo has had quite an interesting film career. Appearing in various roles since the 90s, 2011 saw him breaking out in both Warrior and The Grey. Following an appearance in the MCU as Crossbones, Grillo started to find his niche in the action genre. Now, he’s prepping to join the DC film world as Rick Flagg Sr in Creature Commandos as well as Season 2 of Peacemaker. His latest film, Long Gone Heroes, sees Grillo rescuing his niece from a hostage situation in Venezuela. Given the insanity going on in that country, it’s a very modern story, and you can check out my glowing review.

There are times in life when you just kind of have to pinch yourself and make sure you’re not dreaming. I was lucky enough to have one such moment with actor Frank Grillo during a recent interview. The director had sent him my review of the film and he was very appreciative, and happy he could thank me face to face. We also talked about Geezer Teasers, what makes Long Gone Heroes so special, and his excitement about joining James Gunn‘s DC film universe. It was a great chat and shows what a good dude Grillo is. So make sure to check out Long Gone Heroes as well as his appearance is Rick Flagg Sr in the DCU.

Long Gone Heroes plot: Gunner, a special forces soldier who has witnessed the darkest side of country and combat, is forced back into the field of battle to save his niece, who is being held in South America. As the fight intensifies, Gunner and his team discover that her disappearance is part of a corrupt private operation that hits way too close to home. Acclaimed actors Andy Garcia, Melissa Leo, Josh Hutcherson, and Frank Grillo star in a nonstop action-thriller that will leave you breathless.

LONG GONE HEROES IS IN THEATERS, ON DEMAND, AND DIGITAL ON SEPTEMBER 20TH, 2024.

The 4:30 Movie, the sixteenth feature film from director Kevin Smith, received a theatrical release on September 13th, and now it has been revealed that the movie is coming to 4K and Blu-ray on November 5th! Copies of the physical media versions of the movie are available for pre-order on Amazon – including an Amazon-exclusive steelbook edition where the case is designed to look like a large VHS tape and the discs look like VHS tape spools! A fitting design for a movie that’s set in 1986. Images of the steelbook design can be seen right here:

The 4:30 Movie is a coming-of-age comedy that follows three sixteen-year-old friends who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local multiplex. But when one of the guys also invites the girl of his dreams to see the latest comedy, each of the teens will learn something serious about life and love before the credits roll.

Austin Zajur (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark), Nicholas Cirillo (Outer Banks), and Reed Northrup (High Maintenance) play the sixteen year old friends, with Siena Agudong (Resident Evil) as the dream girl. Ken Jeong (The Hangover), Genesis Rodriguez (Tusk), Justin Long (Barbarian), Sam Richardson (Veep), Jason Lee (Almost Famous), Rachel Dratch (I Love My Dad), Kate Micucci (The Big Bang Theory), Adam Pally (Sonic the Hedgehog), Harley Quinn Smith (Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood), Jason Biggs (American Pie), and Method Man (How High) are also in the cast.

The 4:30 Movie was filmed at Smodcastle Cinemas in New Jersey, a theatre Smith now co-owns and used to hang out in every weekend when he was a teenager. Liz Destro, Josh Bachove, and Jordan Monsanto produced, with Bill Bromiley, Shanan Becker, and Jonathan Saba executive producing.

JoBlo’s own Alex Maidy and I were both fans of The 4:30 Movie and rank it highly as one of the best movies Smith has ever made. You can read Alex’s review HERE. I will definitely be adding a copy of this one to my collection of Kevin Smith movies on physical media. A collection that’s only lacking KillRoy Was Here, since that one was released as an NFT.

The back of the 4K release reveals that bonus features include an audio commentary with Kevin Smith and a making of featurette, as well as the trailer.

The Penguin, Scarface, HBO series

The Batman‘s universe continues strong. HBO’s The Penguin is earning positive reviews with a certified fresh rating of 94% with critics and an audience score of 89%. In his review, our Alex Maidy stated, The Penguin easily becomes the best DC or Marvel television series to date, with the bar being raised substantially. Colin Farrell’s performance will easily earn the actor a slew of awards, and it is another jewel in the long-running streak of top-caliber HBO original series. A couple of key moments towards the end of the series will shake up audiences who are unprepared for where The Penguin is headed. Still, it also provides some references that tease us into how these characters will factor into The Batman Part II. Not a single moment in these eight episodes feels wasted or padded, which is surprising since every episode comes close to a full hour, with the premiere and finale going longer than sixty minutes.”

Variety has now revealed that The Penguin has become quite a hit with the Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti show opening to 5.3 million U.S. viewers across all platforms since it debuted on September 19. This figure also includes repeat airings on the premium channel HBO, as well as multiple viewing streams. These numbers make the show a bigger hit than the final season premiere of the Emmy-winning Succession, which had brought in 4.9 million viewers, and the second season premiere of the comedy, The White Lotus, which came to about 4.1 million. However, The Batman spin-off would come just behind the premiere of the crime series True Detective: Night Country, which attracted around 5.7 million viewers. The series would also accumulate the biggest 4-day audience for a new series on Max in every region globally since the adaptation of The Last of Us from January 2023.

As delicious of a role as this is for Colin Farrell, the Irish actor doesn’t see himself continuing to reprise him beyond the show. “Don’t get me wrong – I loved it – but it got in on me a little bit. By the end of it, I was bitching and moaning to anyone who would listen to me that I f*cking wanted it to be finished. I tried to remind them that I had ‘grumpy gratitude.’ I was still grateful, and still honored – I grew up watching Burgess Meredith, and then Danny DeVito was my Penguin – so being a part of the lineage of that storytelling, I really did feel privileged. But by the end of it…”

That’s not a guaranteed no but Colin Farrell’s hesitation at this point to return for a second season of The Penguin isn’t looking good. Thankfully, he at least wasn’t constantly taking the character home with him or getting involved to the point where he started embodying Oz. “It’s not like I didn’t know who I was and I was going out and burning cars and shit, but…if you take what Matt Reeves created and then what Lauren [LeFranc, showrunner] did and what Mike [Marino, prosthetics and make-up designer] did and put them all together, it was a really powerful experience.”
