Happy Gilmore 2, Adam Sandler, Netflix

It’s all in the hips! The time has finally come for Adam Sandler to return to the links for Happy Gilmore 2! With the highly-anticipated sequel in production, the Sandman’s swing looks crisp while traversing sand traps and several crew members to reprise his iconic role as the hockey goon turned golf pro. In a gallery of behind-the-scenes images on Facebook, Sandler takes a “comfort first” approach to shooting by dressing in a snug hoodie and striped bathrobe. While the hoodie resembles Sandler’s everyday attire, the robe serves a dual purpose by protecting his character’s iconic Boston Bruins jersey.

Kyle Newacheck (Murder MysteryGhostedWorkaholics) directs Happy Gilmore 2 from a script by Sandler and his trusty collaborator Tim Herlihy (The Wedding SingerPixelsHubie Halloween). In addition to Adam Sandler and Christopher McDonald returning as Happy Gilmore and Shooter McGavin, respectively, Julie Bowen reprises her role as Virginia Venit. NFL star (and Taylor Swift’s arm candy) Travis Kelce and Benny Safdie (OppenheimerUncut GemsThe Curse) appear in the comedic sequel, with Nick Swarsdon (Grandma’s BoyJack and JillThe Benchwarmers) playing a caddy.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter in August, Sandler expressed his excitement for Happy Gilmore 2, saying, “The idea that me and my buddy Tim Herlihy had and the more we talked about it and scene to scene worked on it, it built, and we feel very strong about the movie itself,” Sandler said. “We’re happy where it’s at and this is an exciting time for us. I don’t know how all of a sudden our brains said, ‘Let’s do that.’ It just kind of happened.”

Happy Gilmore focuses on Happy, a hockey player with anger management issues who, with the help of golf legend Chubbs Peterson (Carl Weathers), joins the PGA Tour to earn enough money to save his grandmother’s house. Happy isn’t precisely a conventional golfer, and his aggressive, slapshot style of play clashes with PGA favorite Shooter McGavin, a self-important asshat in desperate need of a kick in the golf balls. As Happy and Shooter prepare to face one another for the top prize, Shooter uses every dirty trick in the book to keep his title and sabotage Happy’s possible victory.

Plot details for Happy Gilmore 2 remain a mystery, though with Shooter Gavin returning to the course, we could be in for a spot of revenge on the green.

Back in 2020, Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia made his feature directorial debut (after a couple decades of making short films) with the thriller The Platform, which was released through the Netflix streaming service. You can read my very positive review of that film at THIS LINK, but the gist of it is that I was very impressed and was left eager to see what Gaztelu-Urrutia would make next. He was assembling a film called Rich Flu before the strikes last year, but it turns out that the next movie we’ll see from him is a sequel to his debut, The Platform 2. This one will also be heading out into the world courtesy of Netflix – and the streamer will be releasing the film on October 4th, helping kick off the Halloween season. With that date just a couple of weeks away, Netflix has shared a clip from the film, and that can be viewed in the embed above. This clip basically serves as an introduction to the sequel’s lead character.

Directed by Gaztelu-Urrutia from a screenplay by David Desola and Pedro Rivero, The Platform told the following story: A vertical prison with one cell per level. Two people per cell. Only one food platform and two minutes per day to feed. An endless nightmare trapped in The Hole. Variety provides the reminder, “The tower’s real name is the Vertical Self-Management Center and it works by allocating a handful of prisoners to each floor. When it comes to meals, a platform abundant with food slowly descends, stopping at each floor for a specific amount of time. But inevitably it means those at the top get first pick – while those at the bottom are lucky to get anything to eat at all.

Gaztelu-Urrutia, Desola, and Rivero share writing credit on The Platform 2 with Egoitz Moreno. Here’s the synopsis: Do you think you can enforce justice in the hell of The Platform? And if you try, who’s going to enforce it? As a mysterious leader imposes their rule in the Platform, a new resident becomes embroiled in the battle against this controversial method to fight the brutal feeding system. But when eating from the wrong plate becomes a death sentence, how far would you be willing to go to save your life? The sequel stars Milena Smit (Tin & Tina), Hovik Keuchkerian (Red Queen), Natalia Tena (Game of Thrones), and Óscar Jaenada (Luis Miguel: The Series).

Gaztelu-Urrutia produced The Platform 2 with Carlos Júarez and Raquel Perea.

Who’s ready to re-enter the lion’s den for a high-stakes heist with enemies closing in on all sides? Gerard Butler (GreenlandAngel Has Fallen) and O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton), that’s who! The dynamic duo returns for another action-packed mission from director Christian Gudegast (Den of Thieves, Plane, London Has Fallen), whose 2018 crime thriller, Den of Thieves, is a favorite here at JoBlo. So, when a Den of Thieves 2: Pantera trailer hits the scene, we’re there.

Directed and written by Christian Gudegast, the Den of Thieves 2: Pantera trailer presents a balls-to-the-wall diamond heist in Europe, with ‘Big Nick’ O’Brien (Butler) and Donnie Wilson (Jackson Jr.) burying the hatchet for a bullet-chewing-caper that could set them up for life.

Here’s the official synopsis for Den of Thieves 2: Pantera:

In Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, Big Nick is back on the hunt on the mean streets of Europe, closing in on Donnie, who is embroiled in the dangerous world of diamond thieves and the infamous Panther mafia, as they plot a massive heist of the world’s biggest diamond exchange.

Jordan Bridges (Den of Thieves, Mona Lisa Smile), Swen Temmel (The Covenant, Boss Level), Evin Ahmad (Snabba Cash, Beyond Dreams), Yaen Zates Atour (The Witcher, Robin Hood), Salvatore Esposito (Fargo, The Perfect Dinner), Orli Shuka (Gangs of London, War Machine), and Rico Verhoeven (Black Lotus, Undercover) star alongside Butler and Jackson Jr. as primary cast members.

“We are tremendous fans of Gerard Butler, who we’ve worked with numerous times, and are so thrilled to be on board with him, Christian Gudegast, Producer Tucker Tooley and the amazing supporting cast. Films like this make going to the theater fun, and we can’t wait to give moviegoers the chance to see it on the big screen,” said Briarcliff’s CEO Tom Ortenberg about the sequel in May 2023.

“We are thrilled to be working with Tom and his team on Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. Today’s theatrical landscape is tricky, and it takes innovation to break through. With Tom’s incredible track record and experience we feel like this exciting sequel will be in good hands,” added producer Tucker Tooley.

Matt Reeves take on The Batman brought us Colin Farrell. The actor blew me away. His performance as Oz Cobb/The Penguin was exceptional thanks to the many elements with it. It was a sublime introduction to an intriguing character. And I’m extremely happy that the Max TV series The Penguin, which follows the events of the 2022 film, is outstanding on every level. From the first episode, you get a sense of how deeply they explore every single character. Mr. Farrell gives one of his best performances. And frankly, this is one of the most complex and fascinating villain stories I’ve beyond enjoyed tuning into. You can check out Alex Maidy’s rave review here. In it, he calls it a masterpiece. I tend to agree.

I first had the opportunity to meet and interview Colin Farrell back with In Bruges. Throughout the years, I’ve grown to genuinely admire and respect him. Farrell is an exceptional talented actor. As well, he is a supremely kind human being with a generous and giving nature. As evidence, he created the Colin Farrell Foundation in hopes of making the lives of those with Intellectual Disabilities much easier “through education, advocacy, and innovative programs.” Something that means a whole lot.

For us at JoBlo we’d like to thank Mr. Farrell for an amazing chat. As always, it was wonderful to see him. A great actor, great human being, and someone I love talking to. As we began our conversation, Colin gave one of the best responses to any question regarding his hope that people enjoy The Penguin. He talked about bringing all of the elements together, and the amazing cast and crew that have gathered to tell this crime story. The man is one of my favorite guys in Hollywood. And one hell of a fantastic actor.

The Penguin premieres this Thursday, September 19th.

The stylish neo-noir thriller Magpie is set to play on the big screen in New York, Los Angeles, and select U.S. cities starting on October 25th, and with that theatrical release date just one month away, Shout! Studios has unveiled a poster and a trailer for the film. The trailer can be viewed in the embed above, and the poster can be found at the bottom of this article.

Directed by Sam Yates (VANYA, The Hope Rooms) from a screenplay by Tom Bateman (Murder on the Orient ExpressThirteen Lives) that was based on an original idea by star Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Magpie has the following synopsis: The lives of married couple Anette and Ben begin to fracture when their daughter is cast alongside a glamorous movie star, Alicia. As Anette’s suspicions of Ben’s infatuation with Alicia intensify, their secrets and lies threaten to burst to the surface and destroy them all.

Ridley plays Anette and is joined in the cast by Shazad Latif (Penny Dreadful) as Ben and Matilda Lutz (Revenge) as Alicia. Also in the cast are Pippa Bennett-Warner (Gangs of London), newcomer Hiba Ahmed, Cherrelle Skeete (The Midwich Cuckoos), Alistair Petrie (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Niall Wright (6Degrees), Jenny Galloway (Wicked Little Letters), Andy M Milligan (Dead Hot), Emmet Kirwan (Dublin Oldschool), Matthew Spencer (Trying), and Karel Bojan Hutter (Another God).

Magpie is coming our way from Align, in association with The Veterans, A Werewolf Films, and 55 Films. Ridley and Bateman produced with Kate Solomon, Camilla Bray, Nadia Khamlichi, and Sierra Garcia. Adrian Politowski, Martin Metz, Nessa McGill, and Clare Hardwick served as executive producers.

Ridley recently revealed that she has been diagnosed with Graves’ disease, with the symptoms first showing up while she was working on Magpie. She has a role in the survival thriller We Bury the Dead, which will be premiering soon, and she’s set to star in another Star Wars movie.

What did you think of the Magpie trailer? Does this look like a movie you’d like to watch next month? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

PLUS AN ALL-NEW POST-CREDIT SCENE

The new post-credit scene is an interesting announcement. It will likely be a tease for a future sequel as this film became one of the year’s few box office hits. The directors, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, have also said they’d like to make Bad Boys 5 a more international story. Fallah stated, “What we want [is] to go around the world with them.”

El Arbi added, “In every country we were imagining, how would Mike and Marcus be in France, or how would they be in the U.K., or how would they be in Dubai, or in Morocco, or in Africa, or in Asia? There’s a lot of interesting comedy that you could do with them. We’ve gotta push it to the next level in terms of action.” The directors added that they hadn’t heard anything about a potential sequel from Sony other than Tom Rothman emailing congratulations on the success of Ride or Die. If they return to direct Bad Boys 5, they will have directed more franchise installments than Michael Bay.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has dominated the box office the last two weekends, emerging as one of the year’s biggest blockbusters. However, its reign at the top of the box office heap seems bound to (maybe) end this weekend with the release of Paramount’s Transformers One. This animated prequel has to overcome the fact that some degree of franchise fatigue has started to set in, with Bumblebee, Transformers: The Last Knight and Rise of the Beasts all struggling to break even at the domestic box office, even if internationally, the grosses remain strong.

What makes Transformers One different is that this is a departure from live-action, with it being the first animated movie in the franchise since 1986’s Transformers: The Movie. The estimates for the film are relatively weak, with only a $30 million (or so) weekend looking likely. I personally loved the film (check out my review) and even got quoted in the final trailer. Here’s the thing – it’s going to have a soft opening. It’s just a fact. But word of mouth is going to be great. When I attended a word-of-mouth screening here in Montreal, the audience cheered when it ended. The last time I remember that happening was at Black Panther. The CinemaScore is going to be great, so hopefully, word of this great little animated flick will spread. However, it also has big competition next week with The Wild Robot (which is apparently also great).

Transformers One should be able to eke out a victory over Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, with that one looking at about $25 million this weekend, although it’s not impossible the sequel could repeat at the top of the charts

Third place should go to Lionsgate’s Never Let Go, which is looking at a modest $6 million weekend. The studio is suffering one of the worst runs at the box office in recent memory, and while Halle Berry’s star power might bring in an audience, I think horror fans are waiting until October to really get in the spirit of the spooky season. It could even get beaten by Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil in week 2.

Firth place is a total crapshoot. It could be Deadpool & Wolverine with about $3 million, but it could also go to Matt Walsh’s controversial Am I Racist, which made a surprising amount of money last weekend. I’m betting on Deadpool as I think that movie was front-loaded.

Here are my predictions:

  1. Transformers One: $30 million
  2. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: $25 million
  3. Never Let Go: $6 million
  4. Speak No Evil: $5 million
  5. Deadpool & Wolverine: $3 million

Emma Corrin

A seventh season of the anthology series Black Mirror will be making its way to the Netflix streaming service sometime in 2025 – and today, Netflix revealed the names of 19 Black Mirror season 7 cast members! Here’s the line-up: Awkwafina (Jackpot), Milanka Brooks (Mum and I Don’t Talk Anymore), Peter Capaldi (Doctor Who), Emma Corrin (Deadpool and Wolverine), Patsy Ferran (Firebrand), Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers), Lewis Gribben (Blade Runner 2099), Osy Ikhile (Citadel), Rashida Jones (Sunny), Siena Kelly (Domino Day), Billy Magnussen (Road House), Rosy McEwen (Blue Jean), Cristin Milioti (The Penguin), Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids), Issa Rae (Barbie), Paul G. Raymond (Horrible Histories), Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish), Jimmi Simpson (Westworld), and Harriet Walter (Succession). Information on the specific episodes they’ll be in and the characters they’ll be playing is being kept under wraps.

Black Mirror season 7 will consist of six episodes, one of which will be a sequel to the popular season 4 episode USS Callister! We even have a short synopsis for that one: “Robert Daly is dead, but for the crew of the USS Callister, their problems are just beginning.“ Directed by Toby Haynes from a script written by William Bridges and Brooker, the season 4 USS Callister episode told the story of a gaming company’s CTO. He is the mastermind behind a popular multiplayer game and has a private copy of it, which he uses to torment his colleagues who fail to show him respect in the office. The episode had a running time of 76 minutes and starred Jesse Plemons, Cristin Milioti, Billy Magnussen, Jimmi Simpson, Michaela Coel, Milanka Brooks, Osy Ikhile, Paul G. Raymond, Hammed Animashaun, Tom Mulheron, and Aaron Paul. Given that several of those actors are named on the season 7 cast list, we probably know which episode they’re appearing in…

Created and written by Brooker, Black Mirror is an anthology series that taps into our collective unease with the modern world, with each stand-alone episode a sharp, suspenseful tale exploring themes of contemporary techno-paranoia leading to an unforgettable – and sometimes unsettling – conclusion. Without questioning it, technology has transformed all aspects of our lives; in every home; on every desk; in every palm – a plasma screen; a monitor; a Smartphone – a Black Mirror reflecting our 21st Century existence back at us.

Coming our way from the Broke & Bones production company, Black Mirror season 7 is being executive produced by Brooker, Jessica Rhoades, and Annabel Jones.

    Rope, david fincher

A rumor had been going around that Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope was being developed into a remake. And World of Reel is now confirming that the project is indeed happening and the film may be securing David Fincher to direct. Fincher was recently trying to develop a remake of another Alfred Hitchcock classic, Strangers on a Train, which was said to be eyeing Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck to star. However, now it seems as though Fincher is instead opting to remake Rope as, according to Netflix’s Kasey Moore, the film is moving forward. Denzel Washington and/or Charlize Theron may be up for roles in the film.

The plot synopsis for the Alfred Hitchcock original reads,
“Just before hosting a dinner party, Philip Morgan (Farley Granger) and Brandon Shaw (John Dall) strangle a mutual friend to death with a piece of rope, purely as a Nietzsche-inspired philosophical exercise. Hiding the body in a chest upon which they then arrange a buffet dinner, the pair welcome their guests, including the victim’s oblivious fiancée (Joan Chandler) and the college professor (James Stewart) whose lectures inadvertently inspired the killing.”

Meanwhile, Netflix is extremely interested in hiring David Fincher to be heavily involved with an English-language spin-off, tentatively titled Squid Game: America. While there hasn’t been confirmation whether Squid Game: America will be a closely tied spin-off, it is expected the project will more likely be part of the original Squid Game world rather than an out-and-out remake. According to rumor podcast TheInSneider“Netflix is courting DAVID FINCHER to produce and direct an American take on SQUID GAME. No idea whether he’s engaging, but they want him to tackle this project BADLY, per multiple sources.” It is also being said that Dennis Kelly, a British writer and producer, who is best known for stage plays Debris and Utopia and movies like Matilda the Musical and Black Sea, will be set to write the project.

What’s on Netflix had conveyed that Fincher has at least four projects in development at Netflix, which includes Squid Game: America. There is also his Robert Towne-penned Chinatown prequel, a project titled Bitterroot, and “an untitled crime thriller.” The untitled crime thriller is believed to be the yet-to-be-announced Rope remake.

    Nosferatu Lily-Rose Depp

The WitchThe Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it HERE) is set to reach theatres on Wednesday, December 25th – and today, a poster for the film has arrived online. It features the vampire character Count Orlok, but it doesn’t want to give too much away about him just yet, keeping him shrouded in darkness. You can take a look at the poster at the bottom of this article.

An unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the original Nosferatu has the following synopsis: In this highly influential silent horror film, the mysterious Count Orlok (Max Schreck) summons Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim) to his remote Transylvanian castle in the mountains. The eerie Orlok seeks to buy a house near Hutter and his wife, Ellen (Greta Schroeder). After Orlok reveals his vampire nature, Hutter struggles to escape the castle, knowing that Ellen is in grave danger. Meanwhile Orlok’s servant, Knock (Alexander Granach), prepares for his master to arrive at his new home.

Eggers’ Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman in 19th century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him.

The film stars Bill Skarsgard (It) as the title character, Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man: No Way Home) as crazy vampire hunter Von Franz, Lily-Rose Depp (The Idol) as Ellen Hutter and Nicholas Hoult (Renfield) as her husband Thomas – a role Skarsgard was going to play at one point. Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Bullet Train) is in there as Thomas’s friend Friedrich Harding, with Emma Corrin (The Crown) as Friedrich’s wife Anna, Ralph Ineson (The Witch) as Von Franz’s cohort Dr. Wilhelm Sievers, and Simon McBurney (The Conjuring 2) in an unspecified role. Skarsgard has said that playing Nosferatu / Count Orlok was like “conjuring pure evil. It took a while for me to shake off the demon that had been conjured inside of me. … I do not think people are gonna recognize me in it.

Are you looking forward to the Nosferatu remake? Take a look at the poster, then let us know by leaving a comment below.
