Timothée Chalamet, A Complete Unknown, SNL

Very few people serve as both host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live. When it does happen, the host/musical guests are icons such as Elton John, Taylor Swift, Ray Charles, Paul Simon, or Britney Spears. In the history of SNL, only four of the double-duty hosts have been non-professional musicians, with the last being Deion Sanders in 1995 (although Bon Jovi also performed that night). We can soon add Timothée Chalamet to that list as the star of A Complete Unknown will host and serve as the musical guest on the January 25th episode of SNL.

Given the dozens of Bob Dylan tunes Chalamet sings in A Complete Unknown, it’s reasonable to assume that he’ll belt out a few of those, but the actor is also a big fan of rap music, so anything could happen. Might we witness the return of ‘Lil Timmy Tim?

Our own Chris Bumbray was a big fan of A Complete Unknown, particularly the performance of the leading man. “Chalamet is the real deal,” Bumbray wrote. “He makes for a perfect Dylan, with him channelling the man’s iconic appearance and voice without ever coming off like he’s doing a caricature.” Bumbray added that the film is “thoroughly entertaining and really gives you an appreciation for Dylan’s craft and importance, with the film packed with impressively mounted performances of his most essential songs. A Complete Unknown should do what Walk the Line did: it will expose Dylan’s music to a younger audience, as the film plays well to Dylan aficionados, more casual fans (such as myself) and even those who’ve never heard of him. It’s one of the year’s most entertaining movies, with Mangold’s film so good that I hope he’s got a few Dylan sequels in him, as it truly left me wanting more.” You can check out the rest of his review right here

Although Chalamet didn’t take home the Golden Globe, he may still have a shot at an Oscar. If he won, he would become the youngest best-actor Oscar winner in history, beating Adrian Brody by just a few days.

Here’s the official synopsis: “Set in the influential New York music scene of the early 60s, A Complete Unknown follows 19-year-old Minnesota musician Bob Dylan’s (Timothée Chalamet) meteoric rise as a folk singer to concert halls and the top of the charts – his songs and mystique becoming a worldwide sensation – culminating in his groundbreaking electric rock and roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.” In addition to Chalamet, A Complete Unknown stars Edward Norton, Elle Fanning and Monica Barbaro. The film also co-stars Boyd Holbrook, Dan Fogler, Norbert Leo Butz, and Scoot McNairy.

Alien: Romulus

Director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus (you can read our review HERE), had only been in theatres for a matter of hours before it stirred up a SPOILERy controversy on social media. That’s because one of the film’s cast members has been dead for several years, so Álvarez and his collaborators decided to resurrect them with CGI… and the CGI wasn’t exactly convincing. Alien: Romulus has since made its way to home video – and if you have watched it in the comfort of your own home, you may have noticed that an attempt was made to fix that unconvincing CGI.

Of course, what we’re talking about here is the fact that the android character Rook was given the face of the late, great Ian Holm (with his estate’s permission), who played the android Ash in the original Alien. Discussing the look of Rook, Álvarez told Empire, “We just ran out of time in post-production to get it right. I wasn’t 100 percent happy with some of the shots, where you could feel a bit more the CG intervention. So, for people that react negatively, I don’t blame them.” But, for the home video release, “We fixed it. We made it better for the release right now. I convinced the studio we need to spend the money and make sure we give the companies that were involved in making it the proper time to finish it and do it right. It’s so much better. [Animatronic puppeteer] Shane Mahan actually did this animatronic of Ian Holm based on a head cast from Lord of the Rings, and that was the only one in existence. What we did [for the home entertainment version] was revert a lot more to the puppet. It’s way better.

It has been said that the story Alvarez and co-writer Rodo Sayagues crafted for Alien: Romulus is not directly connected to the other films in the Alien franchise (which isn’t exactly true), but it’s not ignoring any of the other entries, either. Alvarez has been clear about the fact that his story takes place within the established franchise continuity. In fact, it slots right in between the events of Alien and Aliens. It has the following official logline: The sci-fi/horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful “Alien” franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.

The cast includes Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), Isabela Merced (Madame Web), David Jonsson (Industry), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Spike Fearn (The Batman), and Aileen Wu (Away from Home).

Did you notice an improvement in the Rook effects, with less CGI used, on the home video release of Alien: Romulus? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.

Christopher Nolan, The Odyssey

Shatter your banks and collect the couch change, Universal, because the budget for Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey is shaping up to be his most expensive film ever. According to Matthew Belloni’s Puck newsletter report, Nolan’s upcoming epic could cost $250 million, similar to The Dark Knight’s $250-300 million budget. While $250 million is on par with Nolan’s second Batman film, that number could go higher as unexpected costs and marketing dollars come into play.

While many of us could only dream about that kind of cash, it reminds me that 2015’s Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens, cost a reported $440 million to produce. Imagine coughing up that amount of scratch for anything, let alone a new Star Wars film. Nolan’s supposed budget for The Odyssey doesn’t come close to the amount for The Force Awakens. Still, the project’s hefty price tag speaks volumes about Universal’s confidence in the filmmaker’s ability to deliver a box-office blockbuster.

The Odyssey is an ancient Greek poem by Homer that tells the tale of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his journey home after the ten-year Trojan War. The trip was perilous, including encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the witch-goddess Circe. At home, Odysseus is presumed dead, and his wife Penelope and son Telemachus must contend with groups of unruly suitors who each want Penelope’s hand in marriage to control the kingdom.

The Odyssey features an all-star cast that includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, and Zendaya. Could Damon play Odysseus? We’ll need to wait and see.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey plans to shoot around the globe using new IMAX technology, a prospect with cinephiles salivating. Nolan, of course, is one of the biggest proponents of the IMAX film format. He’s known to push the limits of what IMAX can capture on screens, pairing superior visual presentation with dynamic audio design that leaves general theater sound systems in the dust.

Are you at all surprised by the budget for The Odyssey? What do you think the final cost of the film will be? Let us know in the comments section below.

American Psycho

2025 marks the 25th anniversary of director Mary Harron’s Bret Easton Ellis adaptation American Psycho (watch it HERE), which has come to be known as a cult classic – and for a while, news reports made it seem that, as an anniversary gift, we’d be getting an American Psycho remake from director Luca Guadagnino, whose credits include ChallengersCall Me By Your NameBones and AllQueer, and the Suspiria remake. Guadagnino reportedly signed on to direct the film from a screenplay by Scott Z. Burns (Contagion) back in October, and in December we heard that Austin Butler (Elvis) and Jacob Elordi (Saltburn) were being considered for the lead role of Patrick Bateman, the character who was played by Christian Bale in Harron’s film. But then, Ellis said on his podcast that he thought the remake talk was “fake news” and that deals hadn’t even been secured with Guadagnino or Burns yet. Now, Guadagnino has dodged a question about the project.

Harron’s American Psycho had the following synopsis: Patrick Bateman is a young, handsome, Harvard educated Wall Street success, seemingly perfect with his stunning fiancé and entourage of high-powered friends. But his circle of friends doesn’t know the other Patrick Bateman, the one who lusts for more than status and material things. With a detective hot on his trail and temptation everywhere, Patrick Bateman can’t fight his terrible urges that take him on the pursuit of women, greed and the ultimate crime – murder! Based on the controversial book by Bret Easton Ellis, American Psycho is a sexy thriller that sets forth a vision that is both terrifying and chilling. Harron wrote the screenplay with Guinevere Turner.

During an interview with GQ, Guadagnino was asked why he would want to make an American Psycho remake. He replied, “Any director, in this moment, they are all developing projects. Sometimes you develop with Hollywood, sometimes you have material being handed to you by a studio, by a producer. And I think all of us do make two, three, four, five, six, seven developments…” Question successfully dodged. He did add, “Bret Easton Ellis is one of the greatest American writers alive.

Guadagnino is known to have multiple projects currently in development. In addition to American Psycho, he has the Pier Vittorio Tondelli adaptation Separate Rooms, Christopher Castellani’s Tennessee Williams story Leading Men, the Thomas Mann adaptation Buddenbrooks, the DC Comics movie Sgt. Rock (which would star his Queer lead Daniel Craig and might actually end up being his next film), and he has long been attached to make a new version of William Golding’s Lord of the Flies. He’s got a whole bunch of adaptations on his plate.

Opus

More than a year has gone by since we last heard anything about Opus, a mysterious horror project that’s set up at A24, and at that time, the project was assembling its cast. Now, USA Today has unveiled an image from the film that gives a glimpse of the characters played by Ayo Edebiri (The Bear) and John Malkovich (Billions), and you can check it out in this article.

The feature debut of writer/director Mark Anthony Green, Opus was being kept shrouded in secrecy, but Deadline did previously hear that the story centers on an iconic pop star’s return following his decades-long disappearance. USA Today elaborates, The horror film centers on an ambitious young writer (Ayo Edebiri) invited to the isolated compound of an iconic pop star (John Malkovich) who mysteriously disappeared and hasn’t been seen in three decades. There she discovers, surrounded by the musician’s cult of followers, the twisted machinations behind his grand return.

Edebiri and Malkovich are joined in the cast by Amber Midthunder (Prey), Stephanie Suganami (Power Book II: Ghost), Young Mazino (Beef), Tatanka Means (Killers of the Flower Moon), Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus), and Juliette Lewis (Yellowjackets).

A24 is producing and financing the film, and will be handling its global distribution. Opus is being produced by Collin Creighton and Brad Weston of Makeready, Poppy Hanks and Jelani Johnson of Macro Film Studios, and Josh Bachove. Macro’s Charles D. King serves as an executive producer with Sara Newkirk Simon and musical artists The-Dream and Nile Rodgers, who won a Grammy for their work on the Beyonce song “Cuff It”. As a follow-up to that win, The-Dream and Nile Rodgers wrote original songs for this horror movie.

Mark Anthony Green previously directed the award-winning comedy short Trapeze, U.S.A., but he’s probably better known for his work in the fashion industry. According to Deadline, he was the Special Projects Director at GQ Magazine, “making him one of the magazine’s leading fashion and culture voices.” So now that he has let the world know his fashion taste, he’s ready to show us what he can do at the helm of a horror movie.

Are you interested in Opus? Take a look at the image, then let us know by leaving a comment below. The film has a release date of March 14th.

Kraven the Hunter, digital, Sony

Beware! The movie that killed Sony’s villain-focused Spider-Verse is reportedly coming home to digital platforms. According to Where to Stream, Kraven the Hunter has January 14, 2025, in its crosshairs, and no one is safe from its wrath. You could choose not to watch it, but morbid curiosity is one hell of a drug. Imagine inviting your friends for the ultimate movie night trilogy with Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter queued up and ready to devour your souls.

Gentle ribbing aside, Kraven the Hunter’s digital release date gives Marvel fans another chance to catch the action and become mesmerized by Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s hypnotic abs. Kraven the Hunter is the action-packed, R-rated, standalone story of how one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Kraven, a man whose complex relationship with his ruthless gangster father, Nikolai Kravinoff (Russell Crowe), starts him down a path of vengeance with brutal consequences, motivating him to become not only the greatest hunter in the world but also one of its most feared.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the title character and is joined in the cast by Ariana DeBose as voodoo priestess Calypso Ezili, Fred Hechinger as Kraven’s estranged brother and master of disguise Dmitri Smerdyakov / Chameleon, Alessandro Nivola as Russian mercenary and human-rhino hybrid Aleksei Sytsevich / Rhino, Christopher Abbott as a mercenary and assassin known as the Foreigner, and Russell Crowe as Kraven’s estranged father, the ruthless crime lord Nikolai Kravinoff.

Unfortunately for Sony, Kraven the Hunter only grossed $59M at the global box office. The movie’s failed reception has Sony taking an arrow to the knee on its expanded live-action Spider-Verse franchise, with Morbius and Madame Web bombing at the box office. Kraven‘s failure effectively killed Sony’s plans to bring other Spider-Man-related characters to theaters alongside long-gestating rumors of a Sinister Six movie. Sony even tried releasing the first 8 minutes of Kraven the Hunter to entice audiences, though it appeared only to confirm suspicions about the film’s quality.

Despite my razzing the title, I plan to watch Kraven the Hunter when it arrives on digital platforms. Straight up, Sony’s “bad” Spider-Man-less Spider-Man movies always leave an impression, and I enjoy comic book-related cinema in all its forms. Will you watch Kraven the Hunter when it comes to digital platforms? Let us know in the comments section below.

Alec baldwin lawsuit

It was just last month that Alec Baldwin teased that he had a few things up his sleeve when it came to how he would handle the aftermath of his involuntary manslaughter charges being dismissed over the accidental shooting death of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Now, it looks like Alec Baldwin is making good on that, launching a lawsuit potentially putting himself in even better position to clear his name.

This week, Alec Baldwin filed a civil rights violations lawsuit against prosecutors who came after him. It reads, in part (via Deadline): “Defendants sought at every turn to scapegoat Baldwin for the acts and omissions of others, regardless of the evidence or the law. Although no verdict in this civil case can undo the trauma the State’s threat of conviction and incarceration has inflicted, Alec Baldwin has filed this action to hold Defendants responsible for their appalling violations of the laws that governed their work…Because Defendants’ actions were motivated by evil motive or intent and involved a reckless or callous indifference to Baldwin’s federally protected rights, an award of punitive damages is appropriate to the fullest extent permitted by law…Defendants’ misconduct in their pursuit of Baldwin, and the trial judge’s condemnation of them, has already drawn world-wide attention. But this action is necessary to vindicate Baldwin’s rights and deter Defendants from attempting to do this to anyone else.”

This lawsuit shows that Alec Baldwin wasn’t messing around and won’t just take the persecution as is. Not only were the involuntary manslaughter charges against Baldwin dropped back in April 2024, but just ahead of the holiday season, all appeals were withdrawn. That cleared Alec Baldwin of any wrongdoing on that large of a scale. But for the actor, he’s out to make a point that you can’t just go around labeling people as guilty, especially when it comes to the death of another human. Some might think Baldwin is just continuing to stir up press or that the “scapegoat” angle stinks of ego, but he has every right to pursue action on his own part. As for how he’ll come out of this one, only time will tell but this will undoubtedly be an interesting one to keep an eye on.

Do you agree with Alec Baldwin’s pursuit against prosecutors? Give us your take and your prediction of the outcome in the comments section below.

JoBlo TV

At the end of September, JoBlo Media and Octane Multimedia teamed up to launch a new YouTube channel named JoBlo TV, which hosts multiple feature films to watch for free throughout the week. The genres we’ll be focusing on at JoBlo TV are Action, Horror, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Thrillers – and the free movies we shared this week were all about the horror!

This week’s line-up consisted of Dead Voices, The Thing Inside Us, and Demons Inside Me. Here’s some information on each of them:

Directed by genre regular William Butler (who, as an actor, faced off with Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, with Leatherface in Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, Romero zombies in Night of the Living Dead ’90, the ghoulies in Ghoulies II… the list goes on…) Dead Voices shows what happens when two sisters discover a dark secret while making a documentary about mediums for a college final. Jacob Kyle Young wrote the screenplay and stars in the film alongside Angelica Briones, Lauren Albo, Jack Buckley, Naama Silver, and Cody Anderson.

Written and directed by Paul Catalanotto, The Thing Inside Us has the following synopsis: Daniel and Shelly have lost everything to the LV pandemic that has currently engulfed the world. Most show no symptoms to the disease, but Daniel barely survived the infection. Shelly seems fine except for a strange case of sleepwalking. The doctors can’t help her, so Daniel decides to document his wife’s illness for evidence. What he finds could not only destroy his relationship, but the world itself. Chad Graham, Christine Tonry, Escalante Lundy, Taylor Elizabeth Bennett, Ruben Juarbe, Dustin Reno, and Jim Winter star.

Demons Inside Me (which is also known as Jade’s Asylum) was written and directed by Alexandre Carrière. Here’s the synopsis: In the heart of the Costa Rican jungle, a group of hedonistic playboys descend for a debauched getaway of drugs, parties, and easy conquests. But when their callous disregard for a vulnerable woman unleashes a torrent of her repressed rage, the idyllic vacation descends into a bloodbath. As Jade spirals into a psychotic breakdown, ancient evil stirs beneath the surface. Demonic creatures, grotesque and fungal, erupt from the jungle depths, claiming the lives of the oblivious revelers one by one. Now, trapped in a nightmare of their own making, they must fight for survival against the forces of nature and the terrifying consequences of their own cruelty. Morgan Kohan, Roc Lafortune, Sebastian Pigott, Drew Nelson, Gregory Wilson, Tomas Chovanec, Jeff Teravainen, Kjartan Hewitt, Deanna Jarvis, Mauricio Morales, Diana Marcela Aguilar Chavez, Martin Moses, and Holden Sears Schoepflin star.

A batch of exclusive images from Den of Thieves 2: Pantera feature the characters played by Gerard Butler and O'Shea Jackson Jr.

January releases are here. Normally, the month is a dumping ground for films that studios have little faith in to become moneymakers. However, that is not to say that enjoyable films can’t come out in January. Den of Thieves 2: Pantera was enjoyed by our Chris Bumbray in his review despite not being a big fan of the first film. Other critics have been giving the action heist sequel a lukewarm reception as the movie currently sports a fresh 67% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Deadline now reports that the Thursday previews for the Gerard Butler/O’shea Jackson Jr. film has taken in $1.35 million in early Thursday previews. Showtimes started yesterday at 6 pm and the appeal of the sequel doesn’t cast a notably wide net as an R-rated heist film. Additionally, Los Angeles, which is the largest market in the country, will affect the numbers as the city is currently in a state of emergency. Other places in the U.S. are also being hit with winter weather that discourages people from leaving home. The movie is projected to hit $11 million-$13 million at 3,008 theaters.

In his review, our EIC had a blast with the movie as he says, “I enjoyed Den of Thieves 2: Pantera much more than I thought I would. With the sunny European locales and international flavor, it’s the perfect mid-level January release and should prove popular enough among Butler’s fans that I wouldn’t be surprised if we eventually get a third movie in the series. It’s surprisingly fun!”

And recently, the film’s star, Butler, revealed that he was coming off of surgery when filming the movie. “This was a weird time for me at the beginning of this movie because I’d been through a pretty intense surgery, and then I tore my ACL fully about a month later and then started this movie,” Butler said. “So I was not in the best shape, and it was a pretty physical movie, and I didn’t have a chance to get the surgery on my ACL, so I made this movie with a freshly torn ACL, and it was pretty rough.“

Butler continued, “But yeah… I wanted to put a ‘but’ in to make it sound positive, but it wasn’t positive; it was a nightmare! And I was a whiny little bitch!“

Hulk

What’s going on with the incredible Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Although his adversaries Red Hulk and The Leader (as well as his ex-girlfriend Betty Ross) are known to be in Captain America: Brave New World, it doesn’t seem that he’s going to show up in the movie – and if he does, it’s likely to just be a cameo. Last time we saw him, he was still in “Smart Hulk” mode but also equipped with a Hulk Inhibitor Device that allowed him to turn back into his regular human form. He served as a mentor to his cousin Jennifer Walters on She-Hulk, where he also introduced his son Skaar. We’re likely to see him again in Avengers: Doomsday (coming May 1, 2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (coming May 7, 2027) – but now, there are RUMORS that Marvel may also be developing a World War Hulk movie (with George Miller in the running to direct it!) and hoping to have Hulk face off with Spider-Man and The Punisher in the fourth Spider-Man film!

The World War Hulk rumor began with a Production Weekly listing that claims Marvel plans to get the film into production by the end of 2025. World of Reel‘s sources told them that these plans are not “official” yet, but Marvel is indeed hoping to put World War Hulk on the fast track. They wrote, “Mark Ruffalo is set to come back in the titular role, and his character will have a very busy year as this coming February’s Captain America: Brave New World will set up World War Hulk for him, and a few months later, Thunderbolts* will be the ‘connecting branch’ for the character’s solo MCU movie.” They added that Chris Hemsworth set up a meeting between his Furiosa director George Miller and Marvel head Kevin Feige, putting the Mad Max franchise creator (who was attached to make a Justice League movie about 15 years ago) in the running to direct either World War Hulk or Thor 5. Miller has previously said he is an MCU fan and watches all of the movies. The World War Hulk comic follows the tragic death of Hulk’s wife. A more powerful Hulk then vows vengeance against the Illuminati and Earth’s heroes, and wreaks havoc against waves of Earth’s mightiest defenders, taking out a slew of targets on his chaotic path.

Industry scoopers Jeff Sneider and John Rocha discussed the World War Hulk / George Miller rumor on their podcast The Hot Mic, and along the way, Rocha dropped a rumor of his own: “From what I hear from a very strong source in the business, the plan for the new Spider-Man movie was Spider-Man fighting the Hulk with the Punisher. So it was going to be ground-based, but he was gonna fight the Hulk because Marvel wants to move away from the intelligent Hulk we saw in the Avengers movies and make him much more of the brutish Hulk, the violent Hulk, the rage Hulk. That seems to be the approach they want to go in.” Rocha doesn’t know if Spider-Man 4 has changed, but that was apparently the plan for it at some point.

We know that Spider-Man 4 is on track for a July 24, 2026 release date, with Tom Holland back as the title character, but nothing is known for sure about the plot. There have been rumors about a Daredevil team-up and a Venom crossover, there have even been rumblings about Mephisto (who is expected to make his MCU debut in the Disney+ series Ironheart, which is set to premiere on June 24, 2025)… but Sneider felt the Hulk / Punisher rumor has a ring of truth to it, because the deal Marvel and Sony have for producing these Spider-Man movies is that Marvel has to have at least one of their other marquee characters appear in each movie. This is why Iron Man was in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Nick Fury in Spider-Man: Far from Home, and Doctor Strange in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Mephisto may not be popular enough to live up to the requirement, but Hulk certainly is, and the Punisher would be a nice added bonus.

Played by Jon Bernthal, The Punisher will be appearing in the Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again, which premiers on March 4, 2025. There’s a rumor that he might be getting his own show again, and Marvel Head of Television and Streaming Brad Winderbaum has said there’s “absolutely a future for him in the MCU.” So maybe he will be showing up in Spider-Man 4. It would be fitting – after all, the character was introduced in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #129.
