Deadpool & Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Shawn Levy, leaks

Deadpool & Wolverine proved that Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman (as well as director Shawn Levy) are a force to be reckoned with. It’s only a matter of time before the trio reunite, and that could be coming sooner than we think.

During a recent interview for the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Reynolds revealed that he will be spending the year “writing a movie for myself, Hugh [Jackman] and Shawn [Levy] to do that is not Marvel.” He wouldn’t elaborate on what type of project this is, but Variety notes that “his enthusiasm hinted at something fresh and unexpected.

Although this project isn’t a Marvel movie, there has been speculation that Reynolds and Jackman could return to the MCU for the upcoming Avengers movies. As Deadpool & Wolverine gave Marvel its biggest success in several years, I can’t imagine we’ve seen the last of them.

Taking place six years after the events of the last movie, Deadpool & Wolverine finds Wade Wilson (Reynolds) toiling away in civilian life with his days as Deadpool behind him. But when his homeworld faces an existential threat, he must suit up once again and convince a reluctant Wolverine (Jackman) to help save his universe. In addition to Reynolds and Jackman, the cast also includes Matthew Macfadyen, Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Brianna Hildebrand, Shioli Kutsuna, Rob Delany, Stefan Kapičić, and more.

Our own Chris Bumbray had a lot of fun with Deadpool & Wolverine, which sounds like a real crowd-pleaser. “Have you ever been to a concert and wished that your favourite band would stop playing their not-as-good new stuff and play the hits? That’s exactly what Marvel is doing with Deadpool & Wolverine,” Bumbray wrote in his review. “After a rough run of movies, with many saying their Phase 5 has been disastrous, this feels like an everything but the kitchen-sink attempt by the company to win back those fans who feel alienated by the new direction the company seemed to be heading in. With this, you have a rock ‘em, sock ‘em thrill ride that delivers fans exactly the movie they wanted to see, with nary a message to be found amidst all the charred, sliced and diced corpses our heroes leave in their wake. It’s glorious fun.” The film is now available on 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray/DVD, and will be coming to Disney+ on November 12th.

hulk hogan biopic

Whatcha gonna do, when your biopic gets canceled on you? The once-planned Hulk Hogan biopic which was set to star Chris Hemsworth looks to have been leg dropped into oblivion, disappearing without much fuss. Now, Terry Bollea himself is running wild on just what happened with the movie.

Appearing on the PBD podcast (via Wrestlezone), Hulk Hogan said the now-scrapped biopic ran into issues with dropping the ball over legal matters with Netflix. “They kind of missed a beat in the contract. Yeah…There was a payment that wasn’t placed at the right time. The script was amazing. Scott Silver, who wrote the script for Joker, Wolf of Wall Street,  a bunch of other movies, said, ‘This is the best thing I’ve ever written.’ When I read it, I’m like, oh my god, this is really good. At the time, I was in a space where I told him the positive stuff about wrestling.”

Hulk Hogan added that he was a fan of how the biopic was shaping up, hyping it up as a potential Oscar contender. “Spent about three years with this writer going back and forth. When I read it, it was just very, very dark, if that would be the right word, but it was probably what the public may want to see. When I read it, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, if this thing comes out,’ there was talk that Chris Hemsworth had never played a real person before and he could probably win an Oscar, this thing is so powerful. I said, ‘That’s great, everybody’s gonna do really great,’ then I’m gonna be left here alone, and that might be the last thing people remember me for, so I just was moving forward at the time, and when they business-wise missed a date, there was an option for me to pull out, and I did. I pulled out.”

Hulk Hogan also noted that his biopic would have ended during his infamous heel turn, in which he formed the New World Order with Scott Hall and Kevin Nash at 1996. Sorry, wrestlemaniacs, no Fingerpoke of Doom!

No doubt Hulk Hogan would be one of the top wrestlers to warrant a biopic; not only did he help put professional wrestling on the map, but his life and career was filled with controversies, from the steroid trial of 1994 to his lawsuit with Gawker to well beyond. As it stands, talk has circulated about Gus Van Sant, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon working on a movie that centers around the aforementioned Gawker trial.

Do you think there’s an interest in a Hulk Hogan biopic? Who would be an ideal star?

Agatha All Along, Wanda

Marvel’s Agatha All Along series came to a close on Disney+ last week, and despite speculation that Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) might appear (or be resurrected), it didn’t happen. While speaking with THR, showrunner Jac Schaeffer explained how close they actually got to including Wanda in the series.

It wasn’t really a for-real conversation, and to speak plainly, it’s a larger conversation of casting, logistics, availability, and budget,” Schaeffer said. “Also, to me, on a creative level, it didn’t feel fair to the character of Agatha. This is her story, and the idea of bringing Wanda back felt like it would upend that in a way. I love Wanda desperately, and I feel she is a part of the show in that the repercussions of her actions ripple throughout this chapter. Of course, we also have her son, and we positioned him to have big feelings about Wanda and to not be lined up to immediately embrace her. So I’m interested to see where that thread goes in the MCU.

Schaeffer also recently said they originally wanted to add Hulkling to the series, but Marvel told them they couldn’t.

Our own Alex Maidy enjoyed Agatha All Along, saying it “connects the supernatural elements of the MCU with a fun, horror-tinged concept that plays like a cross between the tone of the MCU’s Werewolf By Night and the sassy humor of Disney’s fan-favorite Hocus Pocus.” He also had plenty of praise for Kathryn Hahn, who is able to “dig into Agatha’s backstory in a way similar to how Tom Hiddleston explored Loki in his namesake series.

Agatha All Along is a nice entry for new fans and longtime Marvel fans alike to enjoy an engaging series that boasts solid special effects, creepy visuals, crackling dialogue, and a unique foray into the supernatural that will have ripples for the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years to come,” Maidy wrote. “Agatha All Along is a solid outing from the uneven recent phases of the MCU that works because it does not require a backlog of research to enjoy it.” You can check out the rest of Maidy’s review right here.

The Afterparty, Tiffany Haddish

Lil Rel Howery has starred in comedies like Vacation Friends and Reunion, and he has also dealt with darker material in the likes of Get Out and The Mill. Now he’ll be pulling from both his comedy and horror experiences to direct the horror comedy Haunted Heist, which he’ll also be starring in – and Deadline reports that he’s being joined in the cast by Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip, The Afterparty, Haunted Mansion).

Howery will be making his directorial debut on this film, working from a screenplay by Carl Reid, writer of the recent Hulu horror movie Mr. Crocket. The story Reid crafted for this one begins when four estranged friends reunite at what appears to be a typical house. But one friend has ulterior motives; he plans to rob the place and needs their help to find an antique worth a fortune. But the house is straight up haunted, and the group must squash their differences to survive the night and an insane pack of ghosts.

The Coven will be launching world distribution sales at the American Film Market, which is happening this week in Las Vegas. Haunted Heist is expected to go into production in January. Howery is producing Haunted Heist with Death Ground’s Josh Feldman and Sean King O’Grady (the team behind The Mill and Mr. Crocket) and Robinwood7’s Feras Majid Shammami and Jesse Ford. Priscilla Ross Smith and Kendall Anlian serve as executive producers.

Howery provided the following statement: “I’m so excited to be working on this project in front and behind the camera. It’s going to be so much fun.

The Coven’s Priscilla Ross Smith added, “We are always looking for something fun and fresh. The best Saturday night movie that an audience could hope for. Haddish and Howery will knock this out of the park.Haunted Heist will be the second film to be produced by The Coven; the first was the upcoming exorcism horror movie Shadow of God.

Heretic, box office, Venom: The Last Dance

A24 isn’t done scaring up dollars at the box office as the studio’s horror thriller, Heretic, looks to convert $10M during the film’s box-office launch. Analysts see the chilling feature starring Hugh Grant at $8-10M from 3,200 cinemas, especially if audiences still feel spooky after the Halloween holiday. In contrast, Lionsgate’s faith-based family film The Best Christmas Pageant Ever could pull a cheerful $6 million to $8 million during its debut from 3,000 theaters.

While new films are typically the cat’s pajamas at the box office, analysts predict Sony’s Venom: The Last Dance will take another bite out of the top spot. The symbiotic sequel could drop 40% to 50% from the weekend before, resulting in $13 million to $15 million in upcoming ticket sales. Venom: The Last Dance is holding onto screens after earning $318M worldwide, compared to 2018’s Venom ($856M) and 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage ($506M). The third (and final) Venom film only cost $120M to produce, so it’s not a total loss.

If positive word of mouth spreads, there’s a chance Heretic and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever could exceed expectations. Election cycles are always emotionally taxing on all sides, and audiences could look to theaters for a respite from the tension. Thankfully, cinemas are always waiting with comfy seats, booming sound systems, and snacks to bring good vibes.

Scott Beck and Bryan Woods directed Heretic from their script. In the film, two religious women are drawn into a cat-and-mouse game in a strange man’s house. Hugh Grant leads the film alongside Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East. Topher Grace and Elle Young also star as primary cast members.

As for Venom: The Last Dance, Tom Hardy returns as Venom, one of Marvel’s greatest and most complex characters, for the final film in the trilogy. Eddie and Venom are on the run. Hunted by both of their worlds and with the net closing in, the duo is forced into a devastating decision that will bring the curtains down on Venom and Eddie’s last dance.

Are you planning to check out Heretic this weekend? How about Venom 3? Let us know in the comments section below.

Ernie Hudson seems to have a love-hate relationship with the entire Ghostbusters series, acknowledging its significance in his career but also recognizing that the studio crossed the streams when it came to promoting the movies. But one aspect that shines above the rest is his admiration for Peter Venkman himself, Bill Murray, who he recognizes helped him star onboard for the 1989 sequel.

Appearing at the Rhode Island Comic Con over the weekend (via People), Ernie Hudson remembered that his casting in Ghostbusters II wasn’t exactly a guarantee. “Bill Murray is the only actor I think I’ve ever worked with who when they tried to get him to do another [Ghostbusters] — remember it was about 20 years before we came back with another movie after the second movie. But Bill just basically said, ‘If Ernie Hudson’s not in it, I’m not doing it.’ There are not many people who sort of stand up for you. And that was just very, very special. So I love all the guys. They’re very, very supportive.”

Considering the issues Ernie Hudson had with the first Ghostbusters – which found Columbia only boasting Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis on the poster instead of also featuring Hudson – it’s nice that he recognizes the people would still go to bat for him for the sequel. It also paints Bill Murray in a solid light and shows him as one of the most loyal guys in the business (provided you’re not on his bad side). Hudson, too, would go on to praise his other castmates, saying, “I had been acting for, I don’t know, a lot of years before I even did Ghostbusters. The studio was really not as welcoming, but the guys were. When we do a scene, the guys would say, ‘Wait a minute, Ernie’s not saying anything. So let’s make sure he’s included.’ So a lot of those lines probably could have gone to somebody else, but they were kind enough to make sure that I was always included.”

Even though Winston Zeddemore was a late addition to the original Ghostbusters gang, his – and those of Ernie Hudson – contributions can’t go unnoticed. Not only would he be needed for the first sequel, but he was absolutely essential for both Afterlife and Frozen Empire to help the passing of the proton packs be successful…2016’s version, not so much.

Ernie Hudson definitely has some choice words for certain elements of the Ghostbusters series, but it’s entirely impossible to imagine them taking on the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man or Vigo the Carpatian without the help of Winston. And hey, for a steady paycheck, that’s not too bad of a reputation.

Hoyeon

Last week, it was announced that Theo James of The Gentlemen, the Divergent films, and the upcoming Osgood Perkins / Stephen King movie The Monkey is set to star in a film called The Hole, which is coming our way from South Korean director Kim Jee-woon. Now, the name of James’ first co-star has been revealed, and that co-star is Emmy-nominated Korean actress and model Hoyeon, who made her screen debut in the hit Netflix series Squid Game

James is taking on the role of Owen, a successful professor living abroad in South Korea, who is bedridden after a devastating car accident that killed his wife, Sandy. He is left under the care of Yuna, his Korean mother-in-law — but when she starts to unravel the devastating truth behind Owen and Sandy’s marriage, and Owen himself, his road to recovery is threatened. Hoyeon will be playing Sandy.

Scripted by Christopher Chen, The Hole is based on the 2017 Shirley Jackson Award winning novel of the same name by Hye-young Pyun. This adaptation is being produced by Esmail Corp, K Period Media, and Anthology Studios. The Veterans will be representing international distribution rights at the American Film Market next week. CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group are representing the US rights. Individual producers are Sam Esmail, Chad Hamilton, and Nick Krishnamurthy of Esmail Corp; Kimberly Steward and Alex Foster of K Period Media, and Andy Sorgie of Paisan. Jee-woon is also producing, as is Jay Choi. Soon Ho Song who will serve as a co-producer for Anthology Studios.

Press release note that the story will be told in a combination of English and Korean, as it takes place in both the United States and South Korea. Filming will take place in both countries, with production expected to start in the first or second quarter of 2025.

The novel had the following description: Oghi has woken from a coma after causing a devastating car accident that took his wife’s life and left him paralyzed and badly disfigured. His caretaker is his mother-in-law, a widow grieving the loss of her only child. Oghi is neglected and left alone in his bed. His world shrinks to the room he lies in and his memories of his troubled relationship with his wife, a sensitive, intelligent woman who found all of her life goals thwarted except for one: cultivating the garden in front of their house. But soon Oghi notices his mother-in-law in the abandoned garden, uprooting what his wife had worked so hard to plant and obsessively digging larger and larger holes. When asked, she answers only that she is finishing what her daughter started. A bestseller in Korea, award-winning author Hye-young Pyun’s The Hole is a superbly crafted and deeply unnerving novel about the horrors of isolation and neglect in all of its banal and brutal forms. As Oghi desperately searches for a way to escape, he discovers the difficult truth about his wife and the toll their life together took on her.

Kim Jee-woon’s previous directing credits include The Quiet Family, The Foul King, A Tale of Two Sisters, A Bittersweet Life, The Good the Bad the Weird, I Saw the Devil, the Arnold Schwarzenegger film The Last Stand, The Age of Shadows, Ilang: The Wolf Brigade, Untact, and Cobweb (the South Korean movie, not the horror film produced by Seth Rogen).

Joker: Folie à Deux, ending, Todd Phillips, PVOD

Joker: Folie à Deux will go down as one of the biggest failures at the 2024 box office after its dismal earnings and speedy debut on PVOD. Todd Phillips’ musical sequel earned $204M worldwide, paling compared to the original’s staggering $1B+ blockbuster performance. Opinions differ significantly about the film’s quality (depending on who you talk to). However, most say they feel betrayed by the follow-up, saying it lacks the spirit of the original. Regardless of how you think about the film, money talks in Hollywood, and right now, the Joker sequel comes off like a bad joke. When the film failed to launch above expectations (or remotely close), WB announced a digital release date less than a week into the drama’s theatrical run. Unfortunately, Fandango says sales for Joker: Folie à Deux match the underwhelming performance of its cinematic showing.

Joker: Folie à Deux limped onto the iTunes and Fandango charts in fourth place, positioned behind the excellent Demi Moore body horror The Substance, Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine, and Tim Burton’s surprisingly stellar Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

Joker: Folie à Deux’s failure isn’t the only reason Todd Phillips is making headlines. Speaking with Empire, Phillips griped about the screening of ads ahead of feature films in theaters, saying, “Stop showing commercials before the movies. We’ve paid for our tickets. We’re excited to be there. The commercials tend to take the air out of the room.”

While I, too, loathe sitting through insufferable advertisements at the cinema, they’re a necessary evil if theater owners wish to keep the lights on. Partnerships and advertisements help pay for silver screen real estate, with sponsorships adding to a theater’s coffers. You’d think the outrageous concessions prices would be enough, but alas. I love a limited-time popcorn bucket as much as the next cinephile, but commercials bring in the big bucks from car manufacturers, cheerfully advertised pharmaceuticals and other companies.
