Jasmin Savoy Brown, Scream 7

Variety reports that Jasmin Savoy Brown has officially signed on to return as Mindy Meeks-Martin in Scream 7. She joins Mason Gooding, who plays Mindy’s brother Chad.

Scream 7 will see the return of Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott. After playing the role in the first five Scream movies, she was expected to return for the sixth until the studio low-balled her. “As a woman, I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream,” Campbell said. “I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise. It’s been a very difficult decision to move on.Courteney Cox is also back as Gale Weathers, which will make her the only actor (with the exception of Ghostface voice artist Roger L. Jackson) to appear in every Scream movie.

Isabel May (Yellowstone: 1883) will play Sidney’s teenage daughter, with Celeste O’Connor (Madame Web), Mckenna Grace (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire), Sam Rechner (The Fabelmans), Asa Germaan (Gen V), and Anna Camp (True Blood) also signing on. It was originally believed that Patrick Dempsey might be returning as Mark Kincaid from Scream 3, but it didn’t happen. Joel McHale (Community) recently signed on to play Mark Evans, Sidney’s husband.

The original plan for Scream 7 would have seen Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega returning as Sam and Tara Carpenter, but Spyglass Media fired Barrera after a few pro-Palestinian social media posts that they deemed anti-Semitic. The very next day, it was revealed that Ortega had exited the project as well. It was initially reported that this was due to scheduling conflicts with the second season of Wednesday, but it later emerged that she had wanted a substantial salary increase, which Spyglass refused, so she walked.

That wasn’t the end of the drama either. Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day) was set to direct the movie, but he also departed, calling it a “dream job that turned into a nightmare.Scream 7 is slated for a February 27, 2026 release.

David Lynch, Kyle MacLachlan

We lost the great David Lynch today, and of the many actors he worked with throughout his long career, Kyle MacLachlan is perhaps the most synonymous with the director’s work. MacLachlan played Paul Atreides in Dune, Jeffrey Beaumont in Blue Velvet, and FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper in Twin Peaks. In a post on Instagram, MacLachlan paid a touching tribute to his friend.

Forty-two years ago, for reasons beyond my comprehension, David Lynch plucked me out of obscurity to star in his first and last big budget movie. He clearly saw something in me that even I didn’t recognize. I owe my entire career, and life really, to his vision,” MacLachlan wrote in the caption. “What I saw in him was an enigmatic and intuitive man with a creative ocean bursting forth inside of him. He was in touch with something the rest of us wish we could get to.

MacLachlan continued, “Our friendship blossomed on Blue Velvet and then Twin Peaks and I always found him to be the most authentically alive person I’d ever met. David was in tune with the universe and his own imagination on a level that seemed to be the best version of human. He was not interested in answers because he understood that questions are the drive that make us who we are. They are our breath.

While the world has lost a remarkable artist, I’ve lost a dear friend who imagined a future for me and allowed me to travel in worlds I could never have conceived on my own,” MacLachlan wrote. “I can see him now, standing up to greet me in his backyard, with a warm smile and big hug and that Great Plains honk of a voice. We’d talk coffee, the joy of the unexpected, the beauty of the world, and laugh. His love for me and mine for him came out of the cosmic fate of two people who saw the best things about themselves in each other. I will miss him more than the limits of my language can tell and my heart can bear. My world is that much fuller because I knew him and that much emptier now that he’s gone. David, I remain forever changed, and forever your Kale. Thank you for everything.

A very sad day.

Bruce Willis, video, first responders

The Los Angeles wildfires have been extraordinarily destructive, but the first responders have done incredible work. They have not only fought the fires themselves but also assisted the evacuees, who, in some cases, have lost everything they have. In a video posted on Instagram, Bruce Willis made a rare public appearance to thank the first responders.

Spotting a first responder, Bruce never missed a chance to show his gratitude with a heartfelt handshake and a ‘thank you for your service.’ Yesterday was no different,” wrote Emma Heming Willis in the caption.

Bruce Willis was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia over two years ago, prompting him to step away from Hollywood. His ex-wife, Demi Moore, updated fans on his condition last month. “Given the givens, he’s in a very stable place at the moment,” Moore said. “And I’ve shared this before, but I really mean this so sincerely. It’s so important for anybody who’s dealing with this to really meet them where they’re at, and from that place, there is such loving and joy.” However, she also said that watching someone you love struggle with the condition is “very difficult” and “not what I would wish upon anymore.“ Moore continued, “There is great loss, but there is also great beauty and gifts that can come from it.

In the last few years before his retirement, Willis performed in many direct-to-video movies, which he was criticized for at the time. However, Quentin Tarantino defended the movies, saying he was “really impressed” by Willis. “I thought he was really charming in them. He’s really fun,” Tarantino said, although he admitted it was obvious that Willis was operating with an earpiece. “You can never have a scene where he says a line, somebody else says a line, and he says a line back,” he explained. “You’re getting one line out of him at a time, so there’s always a cut. But he’s making it work. He’s not phoning in his performances.

Sterling K. Brown is about to discover that some secrets are better left unsaid, and tinfoil hats aren’t just for crackpots. The number of things the government doesn’t share with the public would fill the Grand Canyon to overflow, and the trailer for Hulu‘s upcoming series, Paradise, pulls the curtain back on a startling truth that could change the course of American history.

From the mind of Dan Fogelman, the upcoming drama series stars Sterling K. Brown (Black Panther, The Predator, Brooklyn Nine-Nine), James Marsden (Sonic the Hedgehog 3, X-Men, Enchanted), and Julianne Nicholson (Blonde, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, Dream Scenario), among others. Paradise “is set in a serene community inhabited by some of the world’s most prominent individuals. But this tranquility explodes when a shocking murder occurs and a high-stakes investigation unfolds.”

Paradise, Hulu, trailer

In Hulu’s Paradise trailer, Agent Collins (Sterling K. Brown) is the only person the president (James Marsden) can trust on the White House staff. After the president arranges for Agent Collins to learn secret national security information, the truth about our nation’s security starts to unravel, and there’s no going back to blissful ignorance.

Unfortunately, shortly after learning the hard truth, Agent Collins finds the president dead. Now, he’s the number one suspect in what officials suspect is foul play, and someone needs to be held accountable. What does Agent Collins know? Who’s responsible for the president’s death? What secret is worth killing for? We’ll find out when Paradise comes to Hulu on January 28.

What strikes me as odd is the moment in the Paradise trailer when the president tells Agent Collins it’s a good thing he doesn’t plan to bring any more children into the world. What does he know? What’s the dark secret lurking in the black box? How will Agent Collins prove his innocence? Is Collins able to keep the secret, or will the president’s death change how he feels about holding to his word? I must admit I’m excited to find out.

What do you think about Hulu’s Paradise trailer? Will you watch the series when it premieres later this month? Let us know in the comments section below.

One of the all-time greats is gone. That thought went through my head this afternoon when word came down that David Lynch, the incredible mind behind Twin Peaks, Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, and so many more, was no longer with us. The news was a shock as, despite his fragile health, Lynch was still pretty active, teasing potential new projects and also receiving rave reviews for his acting turn as John Ford in Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans

Of course, with this news, it’s time to take a look back at the master’s work, and lucky for us, he leaves an incredible cinematic legacy behind. We all have our favorite David Lynch movies, but here are my top 5 picks:

Lost Highway (1997):

JoBlo's own Lance Vlcek takes a look at the best scene from director David Lynch's 1997 cult classic Lost Highway

This was an important movie in my cinematic education. It came out in the late nineties, at a time when I was coming of age as a potential cinephile. Growing up, I had a sister who was a few years older than me, and she loved Lynch. She encouraged me to take a break from my repeated viewings of the Star Wars trilogy and try a Lynch movie. So, as a teenager, I gave Lost Highway a go on VHS and had my mind blown by Lynch’s nightmarish odyssey into madness. So many things about this film stuck with me, from David Bowie’s theme song, “I’m Deranged” (which I’m listening to as I write this) to Patricia Arquette in a dual role opposite the unforgettable Robert Blake, and so much more. But, above everything else, it taught me that movies didn’t have to be linear or even make a lick of sense. Lost Highway was a nightmare put to film, and even about a quarter century later, that first viewing of it has stuck with me.

Blue Velvet (1986):

Of course, having loved Lost Highway, I next had to trek to my neighborhood video store and pick up Blue Velvet. In many ways, this is the definitive David Lynch movie, mixing small-town Americana with a seedy, surreal underbelly that’s uglier than anything we could ever imagine. Kyle MacLachlan, who remains Lynch’s definitive on-screen collaborator, is superb as the all-American college boy who returns to his hometown and finds himself engrossed in a mystery that repels and seduces him. Like Lost Highway, there are moments in this that will stick with you forever, from Dennis Hopper inhaling gas (“mommy!!!”), to Dean Stockwell lip-synching to Roy Orbison’s “In Dreams.”

The Elephant Man (1980):

Yet, there was more to Lynch than his darker fare. Indeed, he made one of the most heartbreaking films I’ve ever seen – The Elephant Man – which is based on the true story of John Merrick, who was born with a disfiguring condition and made a circus freak until being taken in by a kindly Victorian doctor. In the title role, John Hurt was nominated for an Oscar, and many believe that its makeup effects being overlooked for an Oscar led to the creation of the Best MakeUp award the following year. This was produced by the great Mel Brooks, who famously described Lynch as “Jimmy Stewart from Mars.”

Mulholland Drive (2001):

For me, Mulholland Drive is very much a companion piece to Lost Highway, but that might also be because, as a young man, I would often watch both films back-to-back, forever associating the two. This is the film that introduced us to Naomi Watts. Infamously, the film was conceived as a TV pilot before ABC got cold feet. Its rejection was probably the best thing that ever could have happened to it, as Lynch was able to reformat it into a surrealistic masterpiece, and for a while, it was his most widely seen film.

Twin Peaks (1990- 2017):

Kyle MacLachlan, perhaps best known as Dale Cooper from Twin Peaks, has joined the cast of Amazon's Fallout series, based on the games.

Of course, Lynch will always be best known for Twin Peaks, which began life as an ABC series before being cancelled, leading to a movie (Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me) and an eventual sequel series, Twin Peaks: The Return, which stands as the director’s last major work. Watching the whole thing together, it’s an essential piece of our shared pop culture and will undoubtedly be seen as Lynch’s Magnum Opus. My only complaint is that I always hoped Lynch would return to that world again for yet another chapter, but as far as endings go, you can’t go out on a much higher note.

Bob Uecker, Makor League

One of baseball’s most iconic voices is now silent after Bob Uecker, the famous Baseball Hall of Famer, Milwaukee Brewers announcer, and actor, died on Thursday. According to Uecker’s family, he dies after losing a battle with small-cell lung cancer. He was 90.

The Brewers announced Uecker’s passing on Thursday, releasing the following statement:

“Today, we take on the heaviest of burdens. Today, we say goodbye to our beloved friend, Bob Uecker.

“Ueck was the light of the Brewers, the soundtrack of our summers, the laughter in our hearts, and his passing is a profound loss. He was the heart and soul of Wisconsin and a dear friend. Bob loved people; his presence warmed every room, and he had a way of welcoming all of us into his world as if we were lifelong friends.

“Saying goodbye to Bob shakes us all. He was so much more than a Milwaukee Brewers icon. He was a national treasure. Bob entertained us with his words and storytelling, so it is no surprise that his passing now leaves us at a loss for our own words.

“There is no describing the impact Ueck had on so many, and no words for how much he was loved. We are left with a giant void in our hearts, but also remember the laughter and joy he brought to our lives throughout the years.”

While Uecker’s six-year baseball career wasn’t the stuff of legend, he steadily grew into an icon thanks to his warm demeanor, detailed play-by-play commentary, and love of the game. Before joining the Atlanta Braves broadcast team, he was a scout, then acted as the Brewers announcer in 1971.

In addition to his legendary contributions to the sport, Uecker played a disheveled sportswriter named George Owens on Mr. Belvedere from 1985-1990. While the sitcom never rose to the top of the evening entertainment food chain, Mr. Belvedere lasted for six seasons and is beloved by many to this day. He also played Harry Doyle, an ornery play-by-play announcer in David S. Ward’s 1989 sports comedy Major League. In the film, the new owner of the Cleveland Indians puts together a purposely horrible team so they’ll lose, and she can move the team. But they start winning to spite her after discovering the plot. Major League stars Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen, Corbin Bernsen, Margaret Whitton, Rene Russo, Wesley Snipes, James Gammon, and more.

Uecker was a Jack of many trades, and we will miss his insightful commentary, expertise, and engaging stories. We want to extend our condolences to Mr. Uecker’s family, friends, and fans. Rest well, sir.

David Lynch

We have some very sad news to report today, as the family of David Lynch has taken to social media to confirm that the legendary filmmaker, who would have turned 79 on January 20th, has passed away. His family wrote, “It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.

Just last year, Lynch revealed that he was homebound and on oxygen due to emphysema – but that didn’t mean he had any intention of retiring. Although Lynch hadn’t directed a feature film since Inland Empire in 2006, but he did follow that up with many short films, as well as all 18 episodes of Twin Peaks: The Return and videos for some of the songs from Cellophane Memories, the new music album he sent out into the world last summer with Chrystabell (copies of the album are available to order at THIS LINK). Even though he would only be able to direct remotely, he was interested in doing more. He had also let it be known that he was hoping to make an animated film called Snootworld, which was rejected by the Netflix streaming service, but that he was thinking of passing the helm of that one over to a different director.

Born in Missoula, Montana on January 20, 1946, Lynch got his filmmaking career started by making shorts in the late ’60s. Over the decades, he went on to direct the likes of, among many other credits, Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Dune, Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, Lost Highway, The Straight Story, Mulholland Drive, the aforementioned Inland Empire, and episodes of the Twin Peaks TV series, which he co-created with Mark Frost. Lynch also wrote the scripts for many of his directorial efforts.

As it turns out, a brief cameo in Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans would be the last cinematic contribution from an artist whose legacy will be felt for generations to come.

Outside of film, he was a painter and enjoyed working on music projects. A student and advocate for transcendental meditation. Lynch was known for having a bizarre public persona that was vastly different from the actual down-to-earth man behind the pompadour and dark clothes.

Lynch was married four times and is survived by his last wife, Emily Stofle, as well as his four children: Jennifer, Austin Jack, Riley, and Lula.

Our sincere condolences go out to David Lynch’s family, friends, and fans. Cinema has lost a giant and a pioneer.

Summon the lawyers! After months of rumors, accusations, and disagreements about what happened between Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively on the It Ends With Us set and beyond, Baldoni is taking the feud to another level by suing Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, for $400M. Baldoni, who directed and starred alongside Lively in the 2024 romantic drama, filed the lawsuit in New York on Thursday, alleging extortion, defamation, and claims related to a breach of contract, among other complaints. In Baldoni’s corner are his film studio, Wayfarer and its chief executive, Jamey Heath, and their public relations representatives, Melissa Nathan and Jennifer Abel.

The lawsuit names Leslie Sloane, Lively’s public relations representative at Vision PR, in addition to Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds. Bryan Freedman, Baldoni’s lawyer, stated the lawsuit, saying the case is “based on an overwhelming amount of untampered evidence detailing Blake Lively and her team’s duplicitous attempt to destroy Justin Baldoni, his team and their respective companies by disseminating grossly edited, unsubstantiated, new and doctored information to the media.”

Baldoni’s lawyer didn’t stop there. “It is clear based on our own all out willingness to provide all complete text messages, emails, video footage and other documentary evidence that was shared between the parties in real time, that this is a battle she will not win and will certainly regret,” Freedman said, adding fuel to the fire.

The drama surrounding It Ends With Us reportedly began when Baldoni became upset about not getting photographed with the cast at the film’s New York premiere. Baldoni then failed to present the film alongside Lively and Hoover at the illustrious event. Oddly, none of the film’s stars follow Baldoni on social media, save for Hasan Minhaj. Social media is a significant part of PR for cinema, with cast and crew sharing photos, leaving comments, and hyping the project’s release. Baldoni was not a part of that process, or at least that’s how it appeared to fans online. Watercooler whispers also point to Lively and Baldoni having disagreements about the film’s final cut, with Lively’s version ultimately being the one to play in theaters.

To complicate matters, Ryan Reynolds reportedly helped Lively write a scene in the film’s final cut, possibly raising credit issues with the WGA. There’s also the matter of production for It Ends With Us, which started three days after the WGA strike began. Reynolds is a proud member of the WGA. He could have violated the organization’s rules if he had helped write a scene after the strike began. Baldoni’s Wayfarer Studios also holds the cinematic writes to It Ends With Us as if those issues were insufficient.

Additionally, Baldoni takes umbrage with Reynolds’ Nicepool character from last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine. According to Freedman, Justin believes the character is an attempt to mock him on a grand scale. As reported by Variety, Freedman sent a litigation hold letter to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Disney CEO Bob Iger, demanding that the studio “preserve evidence” related to the character of Nicepool, including:

  • Any and all documents relating to the development of the “Nicepool” character in Deadpool & Wolverine, including without limitation all documents and communications relating to the development, writing, and filming of storylines and scenes featuring “Nicepool’
  • Any and all documents relating to or reflecting any deliberate attempt to link the character of “Nicepool” to Justin Baldoni
  • Any and all documents relating to or reflecting a deliberate attempt to mock, harass, ridicule, intimidate, or bully Baldoni through the character of “Nicepool

The letter also asks for “all documents and communications relating to complaints of sexual or other harassment asserted against Ryan Reynolds by any person.” During an appearance on The Megyn Kelly Show, Freedman said that he plans to sue Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively “into oblivion.”

We know now that Baldoni is making good on that promise by suing Lively, Reynolds, and others for $400M. Window watchers can expect the dispute to get uglier as it rages on, with lawyers on both sides digging their heels in to emerge victorious.

Last March, we heard that production had wrapped on the Stephen King adaptation The Monkey, which is coming our way from the team of producer / genre regular James Wan and director Osgood Perkins, whose credits include The Blackcoat’s Daughter (a.k.a. February), I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the HouseGretel & Hansel, and the recent Nicolas Cage horror film Longlegs (you can read our review HERE). Longlegs was released by Neon – and they’ll also be giving The Monkey a theatrical release on February 21, 2025. We’ve seen a teaser trailer for the movie before and today (eight days later than expected), a full trailer for the film has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

Perkins wrote the screenplay for The Monkey, working from a King short story. The film will tell the following story: When twin brothers Hal and Bill discover their father’s old monkey toy in the attic, a series of gruesome deaths starts occurring all around them. The brothers decide to throw the monkey away and move on with their lives, growing apart over the years. But when the mysterious deaths begin again, the brothers must reunite to find a way to destroy the monkey for good before it takes the lives of everyone close to them.

Theo James (The White Lotus) plays the twins in later years, while Christian Convery (Sweet Tooth) plays them in their younger days. Also in the cast are Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings), Tatiana Maslany (SheHulkAttorney at Law), Colin O’Brien (Wonka), Rohan Campbell (Halloween Ends), and Sarah Levy (Schitt’s Creek).

James Wan and Michael Clear are producing The Monkey for Atomic Monster, while Jason Cloth and Dave Caplan produce for C2 Motion Picture Group. Executive producers include Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Fred Berger of Automatik, Peter Luo and Nancy Xu of Stars Collective, John Friedberg of Black Bear, and Chris Ferguson. Atomic Monster and Stars Collective developed the project, and C2 Motion Picture Group provided the financing.

Wan previously provided the following statement: “Stephen King is the godfather of the horror genre. He had a huge influence on me as a child and throughout my career and it’s always been a dream to help bring one of his stories to life. The Monkey is a personal favorite, with its simple, iconic, and incredibly marketable conceit. And I can’t imagine anyone better than a visionary and lifelong genre fan like Osgood to bring this to life.

In addition to directing the films mentioned at the top of this article, Perkins directed an episode of the recent revival of The Twilight Zone. He has also worked on the screenplays for the thriller Removal, the crime thriller Cold Comes the Night, and the horror film The Girl in the Photographs.

The Motion Picture Association ratings board has given The Monkey an R rating for strong bloody violent content, gore, language throughout and some sexual references.

Joel McHale

Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures once intended to make a Scream 7 that would have starred Scream (2022) and Scream VI leads Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, with Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon at the helm. But then Ortega allegedly asked for a substantial pay raise – and as we saw when Neve Campbell dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute, these pay issues don’t tend to work out. Then Barrera was fired from the project after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass. Landon dropped out the of the project soon after. So Scream 7 has been re-developed, Campbell has signed on to return as franchise heroine Sidney Prescott, back in the lead role, while Kevin Williamson, who wrote the screenplay for the original Scream, directs the film from a screenplay by 2022’s Scream and Scream VI writer Guy Busick, who crafted the story with his co-writer on the fifth and sixth films, James Vanderbilt. (Vanderbilt is also a producer on the most recent sequels.) Scream 7 is set to reach theatres on February 27, 2026 and filming is now underway – and in this film, we’ll be meeting Sidney’s husband. Deadline reports that the character is named Mark Evans, and he’s set to be played by Joel McHale (Community).

In Scream (2022), we learned that Sidney had three kids with a man named Mark – and when fans heard that name, they immediately jumped to the conclusion that Mark must be her Scream 3 love interest Mark Kincaid, who was played by Patrick Dempsey. Obviously, that’s not the case. Scream 7 will show us that she’s married to Mark Evans. We know that Dempsey has had discussions about reprising his Scream 3 role in Scream 7, he was just waiting to see the script… but we haven’t heard if he signed a deal or not. There’s a chance that Dempsey’s deal fell through and Mark Kincaid had to be replaced by Mark Evans in a rewrite. But there’s also a chance that we could see Sidney’s husband Mark share the screen with her former love interest Mark. We’ll have to wait and see how it all works out.

Neve Campbell and Joel McHale are joined in the cast by Isabel May of the Yellowstone prequel 1883, who has signed on to play Sidney’s daughter; Mckenna Grace of the Ghostbusters franchise, Grace’s Ghostbusters co-star Celeste O’Connor, Gen V‘s Asa Germann, The Fabelmans‘ Sam Rechner, Pitch Perfect‘s Anna Camp, fellow franchise star Courteney Cox, who reprises the role of reporter / author Gale Weathers, and Mason Gooding of 2022’s Scream and Scream VI, back as Chad Meeks-Martin.

Want to hear some rumors / possible character spoilers? A while back, industry scooper Daniel Richtman claimed that Scream 7 has the following character line-up: Taylor (17-18) – Sidney’s daughter. Brian (17-18) – is Taylor’s boyfriend. Chelsea (17-18) – the heartbreaker of the group. Holly (17-18) – Taylor’s rich friend, the queen bee of the group. Logan (17-18) – Taylor’s hot, but creepy neighbor with a Ted Bundy vibe. Jennifer (40s-50s) – Logan’s mom and Sidney’s friend. So look over the cast list and see which actor you think matches which character.

In addition to writing the original Scream, Williamson has also written I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream 2, The Faculty, and Halloween H20 (where his script contributions were uncredited). He wrote the initial drafts of Scream 3 and Scream 4, then those both received some major rewrites. Williamson made his directing debut with the 1999 thriller Teaching Mrs. TingleScream 7 will be his second directing credit.

What do you think of Joel McHale being cast as Mark in Scream 7? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
