Josh Brolin

Josh Brolin, who plays Gurney Halleck in director Denis Villeneuve’s two-part adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel Dune, let it be known that he thought the Academy “blew it” when Villeneuve didn’t receive a Best Director Oscar nomination for his work on the first Dune, and now he has told Variety that he feels so strongly that Villeneuve deserves an Oscar nomination for Dune Part Two, that he will quit acting if the Academy doesn’t show the director some love

Scripted by Villeneuve, Eric Roth, and Jon Spaihts, Dune Part One introduced viewers to Paul Atreides (played by Timothée Chalamet), “a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding”, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence – a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential – only those who can conquer their fear will survive. Coming to us from Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment, Dune Part Two explores the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a path of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.

Chalamet and Brolin are joined in the cast by Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Charlotte Rampling, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Javier Bardem, Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Tim Blake Nelson, Christopher Walken, Souheila Yacoub, and Léa Seydoux.

Brolin told Variety, “If (Denis Villeneuve) doesn’t get nominated this year, I’ll quit acting. (Dune Part Two) was a better movie than the first one. When I watched it, it felt like my brain was broken open. It’s masterful, and Denis is one of our master filmmakers. If the Academy Awards have any meaning whatsoever, they’ll recognize him.

Two weeks before Dune Part Two reached theatres earlier this year, Brolin pitched the movie in an epic way: “Robot Lady and Wonka fall in love. Then Elvis tries to f*ck it all up while his bad dad floats in a pool of pond scum. The WWE dude from Guardians gets super pissed while Midsommer hottie puts the eyes on Wonka Obi Wan just after his Mom gets caught taking LSD in a sandy bathroom. Chigurh still doesnt like the guy from The Goonies. I mean who doesn’t want to see all that on IMAX?

Are you hoping to see Dune Part Two and Denis Villeneuve get Oscar nominations so Josh Brolin can continue acting? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.

fox parkinsons

As much as we still see Michael J. Fox at various events – whether to bring awareness to Parkinson’s or partake in Back to the Future reunions – we still miss him. That is, we miss seeing him perform. While Fox hasn’t had a substantial role on the big screen since 1996’s The Frighteners – made a few years after his Parkinson’s diagnosis and two years before he even announced it – he has leaned into television with recurring roles on shows like Boston Legal, Rescue Me and The Good Wife, all of which earned him acclaim. And just like we miss seeing him on screens both big and small, Fox himself misses certain aspects of the art.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Michael J. Fox said what really misses about acting is the collaborative process that a set brings, saying, “You go into something and you say, ‘I know what to do here, I know what to bring to it.’ And then sharing your talent, your energy…That’s the great thing about acting, is it’s collaborative.”

Of course, now Michael J. Fox is collaborating heavily with his namesake foundation, which has raised over $2 billion in research programs for Parkinson’s. His commitment – and that which he has drawn out of people all over – has made him one of the most inspiring figures in pop culture.

Fox even hinted at a possible return to acting, something he has spoken about before. “I would do acting if someone came up that I could put my realities into and my challenges into…” As you might remember, Michael J. Fox did just this in season eight of Curb Your Enthusiasm, where he made light and use of his Parkinson’s diagnosis, much to Larry David’s skepticism. (He would even receive an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.) Fox added, “I could see that…I was good at it…It’s fun to be good at things, it’s really nice.”

Actually getting Michael J. Fox back on the screen doesn’t seem too optimistic, all things considered, but we’ll always have the likes of Marty McFly, Max Eriksson, Alex P. Keaton, Mike Flaherty, and so many more.

After the glitch-ridden presentation of the questionable fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson, audiences are primed and ready for more brutal displays of power in the squared circle. Thankfully, Lionsgate is hitting them with a haymaker courtesy of today’s Uppercut trailer, featuring Ving Rhames as a trainer who agrees to mold the mind and body of a new female fighter.

Uppercut marks German writer-director Torsten Ruether’s English-language debut for the adaptation of the filmmaker’s 2021 film Leberhaken. The original film’s star, Luiii, aka Luise Großmann, a former professional pole vaulter-turned-actress, is duking it out alongside Rhames in the upcoming sports thriller. Joanna Cassidy (Who Framed Roger RabbitBlade Runner) and Jordan E. Cooper (PoseWolfMama Got a Cough) add more power to the project’s punch.

Here’s the official synopsis for Uppercut courtesy of Lionsgate:

“Golden Globe winner Ving Rhames and Luise Grossmann star in an electrifying film about Toni, a determined female boxer, trying to break down barriers as she redefines what it means to be a woman in today’s world. When Elliott (Rhames), a tough ex-boxing champion, accepts the challenge to train Toni (Grossmann), the two mismatched characters form an unlikely alliance. Their sparring and Elliott’s keen insights show the resilient young fighter that real strength comes from the challenges you overcome when life throws its biggest punches your way.”

Today’s Uppercut trailer takes place in New York City in 2014. The hard-hitting tale focuses on Toni (Luii) as she seeks wisdom from Elliott (Rhames), a former boxer turned gym owner in Bushwick. Reluctant to train her, Elliott’s guard eventually breaks, and the two form an unlikely union while exploring social, racial, and personal boundaries. The Uppercut trailer depicts a complicated relationship as Elliot hesitates to train Toni after his experiences on the boxing beat, but she’s not about to back down. Toni is determined to rise above people’s expectations to become a fantastic fighter and then pass that knowledge on to the next would-be champion.

What do you think about Torsten Ruether’s Uppercut trailer? Did you see that fight between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano before Paul and Tyson locked horns? I think the Taylor and Serrano bout was the most intense event of the evening, and I look forward to their rematch if one happens.

Uppercut comes to theaters, Digital, and On Demand on February 28, 2025.

Charlie Hunnam

The ten-episode series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (read our review HERE) was such a huge success for the Netflix streaming service back in 2022 that Netflix ordered two more seasons of the show from its creators, Ian Brennan and American Horror Story co-creator Ryan Murphy. Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story was recently released, and has had quite an impact on the real lives of the title characters… and right before that season premiered in September, it was announced that Sons of Anarchy‘s Charlie Hunnam had signed on to play murderer and graverobber Ed Gein in Monster season 3. As it turns out, Monster season 3 (which is apparently called The Original Monster) was very close to starting production when that announcement was made, because Hunnam has now been spotted on the set of the show in his Gein wardrobe!

Check it out:

Here are some more images of Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein:

I know there were some complaints that Hunnam was too handsome to play Gein, but they seem to have Geined him up well enough.

When the project was announced, Variety reminded us that Ed Gein, who also hailed from Wisconsin like Dahmer, became infamous in the 1950s when authorities discovered that he not only had killed multiple people, but had dug up graves from a cemetery near his home and fashioned all manner of household items and clothing from human remains. Gein’s case served as an inspiration for several major pop culture characters later on, including Norman Bates in Psycho, Leatherface and his family in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs.

Hunnam is joined in the cast by Laurie Metcalf (Scream 2) as Augusta Wilhelmine Gein, Ed Gein’s mother; Tom Hollander (Feud) as iconic director Alfred Hitchcock, and Olivia Williams (Rushmore) as Alma Reville, Hitchcock’s wife.

Have you been watching the Monster series on Netflix, and are you looking forward to seeing Charlie Hunnam play Ed Gein in season 3, The Original Monster? What do you think of the images of him in his Gein wardrobe? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

PLOT: During the WW2 bombing of Britain, a young mother (Saoirse Ronan) sends her young son, Georgie (Elliott Heffernan), off to the countryside for his own safety. Angry at being separated from his mother and used to being taunted for his mixed-race heritage, he jumps off the train to the countryside and embarks on an odyssey through a bombed-out London to reunite with his family.

REVIEW: Blitz wasn’t what I expected from director Steve McQueen. One of the most potent directors in the business, Hunger, Shame, 12 Years a Slave, Widows and Small Axe were all dazzlingly well-directed, but there was nothing in any of them which made me think McQueen had a family film in him. Blitz, which carries a PG-13 rating, is his most accessible film to date, with it a soft-hearted journey through London which sometimes feels almost Spielbergian. While it’s not as good as his other films and is almost shockingly conventional at times, one can’t deny it’s an entertaining odyssey and an enjoyable, educational watch for young viewers.

I’m actually surprised that in modern times there haven’t been more movies about the Battle of Britain, with it a terrifying event that seems ripe with storytelling potential. McQueen’s film takes place through the eyes of young Georgie, who’s perhaps too young to know the mortal danger he’s in just being in London during the time of the Blitz. The movie opens with a chaotic bombing, as Ronan’s Rita struggles to protect her son in an overwhelmed shelter.

Moments like these prove its director is a master of immersive set-pieces, but the movie still often comes up short because the focus is too fractured. Some of it works tremendously well, such as a touching interlude when Georgie is befriended by a black soldier, Ife (Benjamin Clementine), who, for the first time, provides him with an inspirational black male role model. Yet, other parts, such as when he falls in with a gang of thieves (headed by Stephen Graham channelling James Cagney in White Heat), feel like they came out of Oliver Twist and are entirely random.

Yet, some arresting moments drive home just how dangerous Georgie’s journey is, with the cruel hand of fate not sparing many of the film’s most sympathetic characters. Elliott Heffernan is impressive as the headstrong and tough Georgie, while Ronan is excellent as his devoted mother, who works as a riveter for the war effort and is also a popular chanteuse. Harris Dickinson also has a nice part as a young soldier with eyes for Rita, who helps her look for Georgie and proves to be a true blue sort of guy. Paul Weller, the lead singer of The Jam, is likewise terrific as Georgie’s adoring grandfather.

As usual, McQueen’s set pieces are second to none. The bombing scenes are immersive and impeccably mounted, and Hans Zimmer contributes an intense score. It’s too bad Blitz will mostly be seen via streaming (it drops on Apple TV Plus tomorrow) because it was clearly made with a big-screen canvas in mind.

While uneven and surprisingly schmaltzy at times, McQueen remains a master of visceral storytelling, and while Blitz isn’t his best work, it’s perhaps the easiest movie to sit through that he’s ever made. With this, McQueen simply wants to entertain, inspire, and shine a nostalgic light on the everyday heroism of those tested by the terror of the Blitz. He does so through a unique perspective, and even if it’s not perfect, it’s well worth checking out.

The game is afoot again as Boiling Point director Philip Barantini boards the next installment of Netflix and Legendary’s Enola Holmes franchise. The studios expect Millie Bobby Brown to return for the sleuth-inspired sequel, Enola Holmes 3, but deals have yet to close. If Brown signs on the dotted line, Enola Holmes 3 would become her next feature project after concluding her long-standing role as Eleven on the final season of Stranger Things. In addition to her starring role, Millie Bobby Brown will produce Enola Holmes 3 alongside Bobby Brown through their PCMA Productions.

Based on the YA novel series by Nancy Springer, the first two Enola Holmes movies find a young Enola Holmes following in the footsteps of her older brother, Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill). The first film finds Enola unraveling a dangerous conspiracy while searching for her missing mother, while the sequel has Enola looking for a missing girl. The franchise imagines Enola Holmes as a savvy detective-for-hire in a harsh England populated by criminals, kidnappers, and thieves. Enola often teams up with her brother, Sherlock, but in the end, Enola solves the mystery and saves the day.

Plot details for Enola Holmes 3 remain a mystery. However, Deadline says sources close to the project suggest the threequel will be darker and more mature, much like the trajectory of the Harry Potter film series. A darker tone could serve the Enola Holmes franchise well, as Springer’s books lean in a more mature direction with each installment.

Millie Bobby Brown’s next Netflix project is Anthony and Joe Russo’s The Electric State, a dystopian sci-fi epic starring Brown, Chris Pratt, Woody Harrelson, Ke Huy Quan, and more. The story focuses on an orphaned teenager who traverses the American West with a sweet but mysterious robot and an eccentric drifter in search of her younger brother.

Philip Barantini’s next project, the TV mini-series Adolescence, hails from Netflix. The four-episode crime drama depicts what happens when a family’s world turns upside down after 13-year-old Jamie Miller is arrested for murdering a schoolmate. The charges against their son force them to confront every parent’s worst nightmare.

Are you a fan of Netflix and Legendary’s Enola Holmes series? I’ve read all the books with my niece and look forward to seeing Barantini’s take on the character, especially if they choose a darker tone for the sequel.

DiCaprio Winslet

In the ‘90s, there was no greater romance on the screen than that of Jack and Rose, the Romeo and Juliet of the North Atlantic Ocean. Doomed as they were, their love captured a moment that hasn’t entirely been replicated since. And both Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet have remained close ever since first working on 1997’s Titanic, with their latest reunion occurring just this week.

Appearing ahead of a screening of Lee, in which Winslet stars as photojournalist Lee Miller, DiCaprio honored his co-star by saying, “Kate Winslet has dedicated herself to the film and to honoring Lee’s legacy for over the course of nine years. I remember her speaking about this to me personally. This has been a massive passion project for her, and it’s a journey that speaks to the depth of Kate’s passion and her dedication to telling stories that need to be remembered.”

DiCaprio added to his admiration for Winslet, saying, “Kate, my dear friend, your work in this film has been nothing short of transformative. I continue to be awestruck, I continue to admire your strength, your integrity, your talent, and your passion to every single project that you create. So without further ado, one of the great talents of my generation, the one and only Kate Winslet.” Winslet then took the stage and did her best to hold back tears.

The lighting in a bottle (or would it be iceberg in an ocean?) of Titanic sent both Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet into the stratosphere. Although both had been on the scene for a handful of years – DiCaprio even snagging an Oscar nomination a couple years prior for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape – nothing could compare to that. That said, their chemistry and performances in Sam Mendes’ Revolutionary Road made that film one of the best of its year and one of the most underappreciated films of this century so far. We highly recommend you pick up the film on Blu-ray or track it down on any number of streaming services.

Would you like to see Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet work together again? What sort of project would best suit them? Give us your thoughts below!

A series like The Office or Parks and Recreation has the ability to make the ordinary, funny. Or at least help you find the humor. Last week, we were introduced to the staff at St. Denis Medical. The half hour comedy tells the tale of a small group of health care workers dealing with the inane and the insane. The cast includes the very funny David Alan Grier, Allison Tolman, and Wendi McLendon-Covey. The story of an underfunded hospital, and all the problems that go with it also includes Josh Lawson, Kaliko Kauahi, Kahyun Kim, and Mekki Lepper. You can check out new episodes on Tuesday, at 8 PM ET.

I recently had a bunch of laughs with the cast, and spoke to Allison and crew about working at “St Denis Medical.” While I wasn’t familiar with all of their work, the conversations ended up being very engaging. Partnered together, I spoke with the Kahyun Kim and Mekki Lepper who were both a joy to chat with. Next up, Josh Lawson and Kaliko Kauahi stepped in. It was nice to find another cinephile in Mr. Lawson. And finally, I spoke to Allison Tolman about taking on the more grounded character in the series. And she is certainly terrific here. It was such a treat chatting with such a variety of talent. And each one was incredibly down to Earth and charming.

Finally, we spoke with the series creators, Eric Ledgin and Spitzer. The two opened up about bringing the charm of series like Superstore to a medical center. The two were a pleasure to speak with. If you need a laugh, check out St. Denis Medical on NBC on Tuesdays at 8 PM ET.

Reacher season 3

What Do We Know About the upcoming third season of Prime Video’s hit series Reacher? More than you may think. A hit from the moment it premiered, Reacher brought to screen a more faithful adaptation of the Lee Child novels than we got from the Tom Cruise films. With some info on the third and fourth seasons and a spin-off series, we know some good stuff about what is on the way. Let’s dive in and take a look at what is coming up next in the Reacher franchise.

Which novel will be adapted?

The third season will be based on the novel Persuader, the seventh Reacher novel. The novel follows Reacher as he goes undercover to rescue an informant held by a haunting foe from his past. The official book synopsis has some more detail and describes Persuader: “Ten years ago, a key investigation went sour, and someone got away with murder. Now, a chance encounter brings it all back. Now Reacher sees his one last shot. Some would call it vengeance. Some would call it redemption. Reacher would call it … justice.”

Who is joining the cast, and who is returning?

Alan Ritchson was one of the few characters who carried over from season one to season two, which will likely be the same for this season. Maria Sten will once again join Ritchson as Frances Neagley, Reacher’s close military comrade, but she may be the only familiar face. New cast members include Anthony Michael Hall, who is playing a potential antagonist named Zachary Beck, with Sonya Cassidy joining as DEA agent Susan Duffy, a tough but witty foil and possible love interest for Reacher. We will also see Brian Tee play Quinn, Johnny Berchtold as Beck’s son Richard, Roberto Montesinos, and Daniel David Stewart as DEA agents Guillermo Villanueva and Steven Elliot. Oliver Ritchers will play bodybuilder Paulie, and Paul Masserella will play Beck’s bodyguard.

Reacher

The books and series do not share the same timeline.

The chronology of the Reacher series and novels does not match up, which may confuse some viewers. The series’ first season was based on the first novel, Killing Floor, which was chronologically the fifth outing for the character. Season two was based on Bad Luck and Trouble, the eleventh novel published and fourteenth chronologically. Persuader is the seventh book published and the eleventh chronologically, so expect lots of changes and adjustments to fit the narrative flow of the series.

Neagley was not originally in the plot

While Maria Sten is returning as Frances Neagley, her character does not appear in Persuader. Her addition is likely to boost her announced spin-off series, which may be built into the third season’s plot. It remains to be seen whether the Neagley series will debut between the third and fourth season or after the now-greenlit fourth run. It is also unknown whether Neagley will be based on an existing novel or if it will be a fully original project.

Reacher

Season 4 is already greenlit

Reacher‘s renewal pattern has been tightening each year, with the series getting a fourth season pick-up months before the third season even debuts. There was concern about the fate of the popular series in the wake of Paramount’s attempted sale and merger, which dominated the news over the last several months. With cross-studio projects first to be in danger, learning that Paramount and Prime Video are cementing a fourth season for Reacher is a good sign. While it does not indicate when development will begin, I would venture to guess that showrunner Nick Santora is already working with his writing team to select the source novel for the next narrative arc.

When will we see it?

Back in February, Alan Ritchson told Jimmy Fallon that production on the third season was almost done. Ritchson also posted on social media that he was preparing for a role in the film Motor City in July 2024 and said he only had limited time to prep for that project as Reacher recently wrapped. Like any big-budget series, Reacher has a fair amount of post-production work needed to ready it for screens, but odds are that that work is either done or wrapping up. We could potentially see the third season before the end of 2024, but with no marketing to speak of, odds are we will see it in early 2025.

Stay tuned to JoBlo.com as we learn more about the next season of Reacher and all your other favorite shows. What do you expect to see in the upcoming season of Reacher?

Have you ever been so desperate to escape the planet that you wished upon a star for aliens to come and take you away? No? Just me? At any rate, Pixar’s latest feature finds a lonely young boy wanting abduction as the humans he lives among continue to disappoint and ignore him. Thankfully, he’s about to get his wish as Pixar‘s Elio trailer takes us on an adventure to the stars.

Here’s the official synopsis for Eilio:

“For centuries, people have called out to the universe looking for answers—in Disney and Pixar’s all-new movie “Elio,” the universe calls back! The original feature film introduces Elio, an underdog with an active imagination who finds himself inadvertently beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from galaxies far and wide. Mistakenly identified as Earth’s ambassador to the rest of the universe and completely unprepared for that kind of pressure, Elio must form new bonds with eccentric alien lifeforms, survive a series of formidable trials and somehow discover who he is truly meant to be.”

Elio, Pixar, trailer

In today’s Elio trailer, a case of mistaken identity finds a young boy, Elio, being beamed aboard an alien craft and placed before a gathering of creatures from beyond the stars. The aliens think Elio is the ambassador of Earth, but Elio knows better, or does he? Once his survival instinct kicks in, Elio leans into the lie, becoming Earth’s sole representative and only hope for a peaceful alliance with beings beyond our understanding.

Domee Shi, Adrian Molina, and Madeline Sharafian direct Elio from Molina’s screenplay. The beatific animated epic stars Yonas Kibreab (Sweet Tooth, Into the Dark) as Elio. Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy, Columbiana, Avatar), Brad Garett (Everybody Loves Raymond, Christopher Robin, Tangled), and Jameela Jamil (The Good Place, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Star Trek: Prodigy) also star as primary cast members.

Today’s Eilio trailer takes us to the cosmos as Elio joins a galactic summit populated by alien ambassadors, all looking to hobnob with their interplanetary neighbors. Because he’s terrified by his circumstances, Elio lies about being Earth’s representative, which I can only imagine leads to chaos as he figures out a way to get home before the truth comes out. In true Pixar fashion, Elio looks breathtaking in every regard, with the legendary studio pushing the limits of their technology for another CGI animated marvel.

Pixar’s Elio beams up to cinemas on June 13, 2025. What do you think about Pixar’s latest Elio trailer? Are audiences ready for another jaw-dropping and emotional film after the monumental success of Inside Out 2? We’ll find out next year.
