Obi-Wan Kenobi, 4K Blu-ray release

It’s unfortunate, but most streaming shows (and movies for that matter) never get a physical release, but thankfully, Disney has been releasing some of their most popular Marvel and Star Wars shows on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray. Following in the footsteps of Loki season 1, WandaVision, and the first two seasons of The Mandalorian, Disney announced today that they will be releasing collector’s editions of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Moon Knight, Andor, and Obi-Wan Kenobi on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray. Hurray for physical media!

You can check out the Steelbook cover art for each of the releases below, as well as the special features which will be included, courtesy of the Disney press-release. All four titles will be released on April 30th, with pre-orders going up on March 12th.

Disney, Bob Iger, killed projects

Not every movie is going to cross the finish line, but studios such as Warner Bros. have come under fire for publically scrapping movies such as Batgirl, Coyote vs. ACME, and more. Per Deadline, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that his studio has done the same thing; they just haven’t been as public about it.

Bob Iger said that Disney has “killed a few projects already that we just didn’t feel were strong enough,” but didn’t elaborate on which projects those were or how far along they were. “We’re doing a lot. When we talk about improving our film slate, there are really three approaches,” Iger said. “One is you have to kill things you no longer believe. And that’s not easy in this business. Because either you’ve gotten started, you have some … costs. It’s a relationship with either your employees or with a creative community. And it’s not an easy thing. But you got to make those tough calls.

Iger continued, “We’ve actually made those tough calls. We’ve not been that public about it. You have to look at everything you’re making, that you do believe in. And you have to take a position that good is not good enough. You have to basically strive for perfection.

Disney has been struggling at the box office with some notable misfires over the last year, but Iger is confident that the studio will be able to return to past glories. “As a studio, that was number one at the box office for seven out of eight years, that was not an accident,” Iger said. “That’s a combination of both, obviously, the IP that we have, but also the execution — both the management execution, the execution from the creative side.” In an effort to get things back on track, Iger said that they would be “spending a lot of time with the creators, watching these films, giving detailed notes … engaging in a respectful process that results in improvement. And actually, when I talked about being relentless, it’s not letting certain things get in the way of making something great. Whether it’s more resources … or more time… You have to put into the pipeline things you really do believe in. And we know we’re working on that as well.

Scream (2022) and Scream VI star Melissa Barrera – who was fired from Scream 7 when comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass Media – has the lead role in the film Your Monster, a project she had previously described as a “horror rom-com musical.” JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to see the movie at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and wrote a 6/10 review you can read at THIS LINK. We still don’t know when a wider audience is going to have the opportunity to watch the movie, but it has just taken a positive step forward: Deadline reports that Vertical has acquired the North American distribution rights.

The feature directorial debut of Caroline Lindy, who wrote the film based on her 2019 short of the same name, Your Monster centers on soft-spoken actor Laura Franco, who is dumped by her longtime boyfriend while recovering from surgery and retreats to her childhood home to recover. With her future looking bleak, insult is added to injury when Laura discovers her ex is staging a musical that she helped him develop. But out of these gut-wrenching life changes emerges a monster with whom she finds a connection, encouraging Laura to follow her dreams, open her heart and fall in love with her inner rage.

Barrera plays Laura Franco, with Tommy Dewey (Casual) as the monster. Edmund Donovan (Tell Me Lies), Meghann Fahy (The White Lotus), and Kayla Foster (The Deuce) are also in the cast.

Speaking with Digital Spy, Barrera said Your Monster is “a horror rom-com musical. My character is a musical theatre actor, so there’s a musical in the movie. There’s a lot of singing and dancing in it. And it’s like a rom-com with elements of horror. It’s scary at times, and really funny at times. And it’s everything that I love in a movie combined into one.

Vertical Partner Peter Jarowey had this to say about the distribution deal: “We were captivated by Caroline’s film at Sundance and thrilled it has made a home here at Vertical. Marking her directorial feature debut, she has created a fantastic, fresh, genre-defying film that perfectly balances the mix of comedy, romance and horror topped off with a dash of musical theater that will captivate and delight audiences later this year.

Lindy added, “I’m beyond thrilled to collaborate with Vertical on the release of Your Monster. Their strategies and commitment to innovative distribution aligns perfectly with our movie, and their passion for the film and desire to support my first feature means the world to me. The Sundance crowds were incredible, and I’m excited that more audiences will soon have a chance to see Your Monster in theaters and beyond.

Lindy and Foster produced the film with Shannon Reilly of Bombo Sports and Entertainment and Kira Carstensen and Melanie Donkers from Mermade, “a division of Sharon Horgan and Clelia Mountfor’s entertainment company Merman, which focuses on projects from emerging creators.” Dewey serves as an executive producer with Bombo’s Bob Potter. Jackson Sinder and Mermade’s Jack Taylor Cox are co-producers.

The cast of Steven Soderbergh’s spy thriller Black Bag expands today with Regé-Jean Page joining Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett. Soderbergh directs from a script by David Koepp, with Caset Silver and Greg Jacobs producing. Focus Features is setting up Black Bag, with filming happening in London. Plot details remain a mystery. However, the film’s story is a spy thriller unfolding in the United Kingdom.

As The Hollywood Reporter pointed out in January, Soderbergh and Blanchett previously worked together on his 2006 noir thriller The Good German. Blanchett played a part in the film Ocean’s 8, as part of Soderbergh’s Ocean’s 11 franchise. Soderbergh produced Ocean’s 8 but didn’t direct that one. He and Fassbender previously worked together on his 2011 action thriller Haywire. And in addition to collaborating on Presence, Soderbergh and Koepp also worked together on the 2022 thriller Kimi.

Kimi told the following story: A tech worker with agoraphobia discovers recorded evidence of a violent crime but is met with resistance when she tries to report it. Seeking justice, she must do the thing she fears the most: she must leave her apartment. Kimi stars Zoë Kravitz as the agoraphobic Angela Childs, with Byron Bowers playing Terry Hughes and Rita Wilson starring as Natalie Chowdhury.

Here’s the synopsis for Presence: A family moves into a suburban house and becomes convinced they are not alone. A supernatural force has infiltrated the house, taking a specific interest in the couple’s daughter.

In addition to Black Bag, David Koepp is ready to walk with dinosaurs for a new entry in Universal‘s Jurassic World franchise. Initially, David Leitch was slated to direct the new Jurassic film but was replaced by The Creator filmmaker Gareth Edwards. Leitch exited the project amicably, citing creative differences for the franchise’s new direction. The studio is fast-tracking the Jurassic project, creating an all-hands-on-deck situation.

What do you think about this development for Soderbergh’s forthcoming project? Are Michael Fassbender, Cate Blanchett, and Regé-Jean Page enough of a triple threat to excite you about the filmmaker’s Black Bag? Let us know if you want to learn more about Black Bag in the comments section below.

Individuals like Andy Kaufman, Richard Pryor, John Candy, Sam Kinison, Bill Hicks, Robin Williams, Gilda Radner, George Carlin, and Gene Wilder come to mind in a list of late comedic greats who changed the comedy landscape. Their influence remains a part of the art, with up-and-coming joke-slingers citing them as sources of inspiration. Sometimes, it’s good to reflect on the contributions of comedy’s titans. So Kino Lorder is proud to present Ron Frank’s Remembering Gene Wilder trailer, celebrating the life and career of the curly-haired clown alongside notable friends.

Remembering Gene Wilder is a heartfelt documentary and entertaining portrait of the life and career of the beloved actor, featuring an extensive array of highlights from Wilder’s most memorable films and interviews with his closest friends, family, and fellow comics.

Remembering Gene Wilder, Gene Wilder, trailer

Here’s the official description for Remembering Gene Wilder:

Remembering Gene Wilder is a loving tribute to Gene Wilder that celebrates his life and legacy as the comic genius behind an extraordinary string of film roles, from his collaborations with Mel Brooks in The ProducersYoung Frankenstein, and Blazing Saddles to his inspired on-screen partnership with Richard Pryor in movies like Silver Streak, to originating the strange and magical title role of the mysterious chocolatier in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Alongside his brilliant career, Remembering Gene Wilder also captures intimate moments from Wilder’s private life, including his Jewish upbringing in Milwaukee, his marriage to Gilda Radner, and his final chapter, living with Alzheimer’s. Illustrated by a variety of touching and hilarious clips and outtakes from Willy WonkaBlazing Saddles, and more; never-before-seen home movies; narration by Wilder himself from the audiobook of his memoir; and interviews with some of his most brilliant friends and collaborators, including Mel Brooks, Alan Alda, Carol Kane, and his widow Karen Boyer Wilder, Remembering Gene Wilder reminds us what an essential performer, writer, and director Gene Wilder was, an all-around mensch beloved by all those whose lives he touched.

Today’s Remembering Gene Wilder trailer is giving me flashbacks to my youth. I can’t tell you how many VCRs I destroyed by watching several of his films repeatedly. My first exposure to Wilder was Mel Stuart’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, followed by Blazing SaddlesYoung FrankensteinSilver Streak, Stir Crazy, and The Woman in Red. Then came his 1986 comedy Haunted Honeymoon, directed by and starring Wilder, with Gilda Radner and Dom DeLuise. One of my favorites was his buddy comedy with Richard Pryor, See No Evil, Speak No Evil. Wilder never failed to bring the laughs with his unhinged approach to comedy and doe-eyes sincerity when things got serious. Remembering Gene Wilder is a great opportunity to honor this legendary titan of comedy, and I can’t wait to see it.

Yesterday, an image cinematographer Christian Sebaldt shared on Instagram indicated that Final Destination 6 (which is going by the title Final Destination: Bloodlines) is finally, after years of development and a thirteen year gap between sequels, heading into production. Now franchise producer Craig Perry has taken to social media to confirm that Final Destination: Bloodlines is indeed filming, the aim being to get this one into theatres in 2025 – in time to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of the original film. It will even be on IMAX screens!

Perry wrote, “After a long, hard slog through the pandemic and the strikes, Day One is finally in the can. 2025 will mark the 25th anniversary of the release of the first installment in the franchise. To honor the occasion with another worldwide theatrical release (in IMAX, no less) is a rare and wonderful thing. I’m wholly grateful for the opportunity, and humbly appreciate the sublimely talented team that has worked so hard to bring this to life. See you next year!

PS: I know, I know — Pet Sematary: Bloodlines. But this is the title we’ve had for three years, and we’re keeping it… for now.

Beyond Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, there has also been Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines and Tremors 5: Bloodlines, to name just a few… so yeah, I would suggest changing the title before carrying this Bloodlines subtitle much further.

According to entertainment industry scooper Daniel Richtman, Final Destination: Bloodlines has the following synopsis: Just as she’s about to leave home for college, 18 year old STEFANI, who’s been having horrific nightmares about dying in a tower accident in the 1960s, discovers that her dream is actually a premonition that happened to her grandmother, Esther, who thwarted death fifty years ago but is now running out of time. Stefani learns that though her grandmother thwarted Death (until she died in her 80s), and Death has been going after the would-have-been victims of that long-ago catastrophe, killing them off and then going after their children. Stefani and her family realize that their bloodline isn’t safe from Death, who will take them violently and gruesomely, in order, unless someone like Stefani figures out a way to stop it.

Jon Watts, director of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far from Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, is producing the film with Perry, Dianne McGunigle, and Sheila Hanahan Taylor. Watts also wrote the initial treatment, which was fleshed out into a screenplay by Lori Evans Taylor and Guy Busick. The directing duo of Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, who previously directed the 2018 film Freaks (starring Emile Hirsch and Bruce Dern) and the 2019 live-action Kim Possible movie, are at the helm.

We’ve previously heard that Tony Todd will be reprising the role of mortician Bludworth in this film.

Are you glad to hear we’ll have Final Destination 6 / Final Destination: Bloodlines to watch sometime in 2025? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.

madame web, Dakota Johnson, Marvel, Sony

Dakota Johnson, who’s routinely taken semi-reserved pot-shots at her ill-received superhero movie Madame Web, is taking off the gloves. Speaking with Bustle, the Fifty Shades of Grey actress described her nightmarish experience while making Madame Web, saying the end product was nothing like what she and the team set out to make.

“It was definitely an experience for me to make that movie,” Johnson told Bustle. “I had never done anything like it before. I probably will never do anything like it again, because I don’t make sense in that world. And I know that now. But sometimes in this industry, you sign on to something, and it’s one thing and then as you’re making it, it becomes a completely different thing, and you’re like, ‘Wait, what?’ But it was a real learning experience, and of course it’s not nice to be a part of something that’s ripped to shreds, but I can’t say that I don’t understand.”

“It’s so hard to get movies made, and in these big movies that get made — and it’s even starting to happen with the little ones, which is what’s really freaking me out — decisions are being made by committees, and art does not do well when it’s made by committee,” she added. “Films are made by a filmmaker and a team of artists around them. You cannot make art based on numbers and algorithms. My feeling has been for a long time that audiences are extremely smart, and executives have started to believe that they’re not. Audiences will always be able to sniff out bullshitEven if films start to be made with AI, humans aren’t going to fucking want to see those.”

Unfortunately, Dakota’s assessment of Madame Web is spot on. The movie is abysmal, and I say this as a die-hard fan of superhero cinema. The casting ingredients are there, with Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Celeste O’Connor, and Adam Scott being actors capable of delivering stand-out performances. Madame Web fails to take advantage of their talents, presenting a lackluster snoozefest of a film, resulting in arguably the worst superhero film of recent memory, certainly in Sony’s live-action Spider-Verse. Yes, it’s worse than Morbius.

Dakota Johnson is clearly aware of how fans have received Madame Web. She’s also keen on the “gotcha” headlines (see above), framing her reaction to the blowback as outrageous. I don’t believe that’s the case. It’s refreshing to hear an actor talk about their disappointment in the failure of what was supposed to be a franchise-launching film. Johnson poked fun at the stories hitting news sites after the film’s release during her chat with Bustle, saying, “Like, ‘Dakota Johnson Breaks Her Silence On Madame Web’s Fucking Box Office Failure,’” she said, laughing. “It’s like, ‘No, I’m not breaking any silence. I’m just talking.’”

I’m confident Johnson and her co-stars can recover from Madame Web, though I’m not sure we can say the same about Sony’s live-action Spider-Verse. I think Venom 3 will put asses in seats, but what about Kraven the Hunter, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Sergei Kravinoff. It’s been months since the red-band trailer for Kraven dropped, and we’ve not heard a peep since. It will be interesting to see how Sony presents that part of its plan in the wake of Morbius and Madame Web.

Sometimes, it’s easy to forget the world is a beautiful place filled with unimaginable beauty and wonders beneath every shadow, racing riverbed, and endless sky. We need to remember how nature came first and what the world could look like if it were to retake its course. Thankfully, Dreamworks Animation‘s The Wild Robot trailer reminds us of Mother Nature’s grand and beguiling majesty, even if that vision is through the eyes of a character made of metal and wires.

The Wild Robot is an adaptation of Peter Brown’s award-winning #1 New York Times best-seller. The series has three books: The Wild RobotThe Wild Robot Escapes, and The Wild Robot Protects. The story follows a robot – ROZZUM unit 7134, “Roz” for short – that becomes shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must adapt to its new surroundings to survive. Throughout ROZZUM’s epic journey, the curious automaton forms relationships with woodland creatures, braves unpredictable elements, and becomes the adoptive parent of a gosling.

Though The Wild Robot trailer is dialogue-less, the film stars Lupita Nyong’o (UsLittle Monsters), Pedro Pascal (The Last of UsThe Mandalorian), Kit Connor (HeartstopperHis Dark Materials), Bill Nighy (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s ChestPage Eight), Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All At OnceJoy Ride), Mark Hamill (Masters of the Universe: RevolutionThe Sandman), and Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s CreekBeetlejuice 2).

Chris Sanders (The CroodsThe Call of the WildLilo & Stitch) directs The Wild Robot from a script based on Peter Brown’s novel. Speaking of which, awards for The Wild Robot series extend beyond its position on the New York Times chart, including prizes for a Horn Book Award, two E.B. White Awards, two E.B. White Honors, a Children’s Choice Award for Illustrator of the Year, two Irma Black Honors, a Golden Kite Award and a New York Times Best Illustrated Book Award.

The Wild Robot trailer depicts one of the most impressive previews for an animated film I’ve seen recently. The color palette is endless, the animation is smooth and adventurous, and the story looks like it will hit me right in the feels. My body is ready. Production on MaXXXine, the sequel to director Ti West‘s films Pearl (watch it HERE) and X (watch that one at THIS LINK), is said to have wrapped last May, and we’ve been anxiously waiting to hear a release date announcement ever since. Now, the news we’ve been waiting for has finally arrived! A24 has announced (via Deadline) that they will be giving the film a theatrical release on July 5th!

MaXXXine is written and directed by West. Mia Goth reprises the role of X survivor Maxine Minx, a burlesque performer and adult film actress with the goal of being a star. The film will follow Maxine, after the events of X, as the sole survivor who continues her journey towards fame, setting out to make it as an actress in 1980s Los Angeles.

The horror magazine Scream learned that the film is described as being “a good old whodunit slasher,” while Goth described it as “a superhero movie.” She said that because, “Maxine, as a character, has come a long way. She’s a survivor, she’s gone through a lot. When we meet her again, in this new world that she’s in, she’s really fought for everything that she has, and she’s not about to give that up. She’s going to fight for what she has. She’s a badass. There’s a strength to her. And she’s a really proactive, determined, focused woman. She goes after what she wants, and she’s not really going to take no for an answer.

Goth and singer Halsey (who can be seen with Goth in the first look image at the bottom of this article) are joined in the cast by Kevin Bacon (Tremors), Elizabeth Debicki (Tenet), singer Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), Bobby Cannavale (Netflix’s The Watcher), Lily Collins (Emily in Paris), and Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad. The Hollywood Reporter noted that Esposito will be playing an agent for adult film and Z-list movie actors, Debicki’s character is a film director, Monaghan and Canavale are playing LAPD detectives, and Bacon is playing a private detective.

MaXXXine is being produced by A24, Ti West, Jacob Jaffke, Kevin Turen, and Harrison Kreiss. Mia Goth serves as executive producer.

What do you think of MaXXXine getting a July 5th release? Are you glad to hear the film is just four months away? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

No one expected Sound of Freedom to make such a big splash at the North American box office last summer. Nevertheless, this long-shelved drama starring Jim Caviezel as Tim Ballard, the controversial head of Operation Underground Railroad, out-grossed Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, as well as Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning. But, the film wasn’t without controversy, with many online assuming it was somehow linked to QAnon, something the director Alejandro Monteverde denied, saying the goal of the movie was to expose child sex trafficking and that it was never intended to be a political film.

Now, Monteverde is back with perhaps an even more ambitious film, Cabrini, which is based on the life of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, the first American citizen ever to be canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church. To mark the film’s release, we sat down with Monteverde to discuss what drew him to the project. Interestingly, Monteverde somewhat takes issue with the “faith-based” label, arguing that movies such as Martin Scorsese’s Silence, which is also about catholicism, are never stigmatized by this label. He reveals that originally he sought to do something a little different after Sound of Freedom, but felt this story case him to a certain degree, with Scorsese himself having been linked to a different version of this project years ago. In this interesting interview he discusses that, along with he racial prejudice Italians faced int he late 19th/ early 20th century, and how he hope audiences react to the film.

Cabrini opens wide in theaters this Friday! For more about Sound of Freedom and the controversy surrounding it, check out this article
