Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, sequel

It didn’t take Sony Pictures long to get the ball rolling on Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire after the release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, so another sequel will likely follow. Nothing has been officially announced at this point, but Frozen Empire director Gil Kenan already has a few ideas ready to go for the next installment.

Jason [Reitman] and I really love Ghostbusters,” Gil Kenan told Total Film. “We love these characters and we would be really happy if audiences were down to keep going on adventures with them. If audiences feel this way, then we know what the next stories are going to be.Frozen Empire does look fun, so if the film is a success, we probably have another Ghostbusters sequel in store.

The Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire cast are also keen to return for more, with Carrie Coon saying, “Absolutely! There’s something so thrilling about working on these movies, especially as a woman. We’re not often asked to participate in the adventure or the physical elements of movies like this. We’re often just on the sidelines, so to be thrown into the action has been a real thrill. On top of that… Well, it’s already going to be in my obituary, so I might as well lean in.

Per the official Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire synopsis: “The Spengler family returns to where it all started – the iconic New York City firehouse – to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.Frozen Empire stars Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, Celeste O’Connor, Logan Kim, and Annie Potts. The original Ghostbusters, consisting of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson, will also appear, and Kenan has said that they will be treated as “actual characters” this time around.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will hit theaters on March 22nd.

NCIS, spinoff, Tony, Ziva, Michael Weatherly, Cote de Pablo

There’s really no stopping the NCIS franchise. CBS Studios is developing yet another NCIS spinoff series, but this one will bring back two fan-favourite characters from the original series. Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo are set to reprise their roles of Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David for a 10-episode series destined for the Paramount+ streaming service.

Cote de Pablo departed NCIS in 2013, with Michael Weatherly leaving two years later. After Ziva supposedly died, Tony left the service to raise their daughter, but when Ziva was found to be alive, the pair reunited in Paris after completing a final mission. That’s where the new show will pick up. Per the show’s logline, “When Tony’s security company is attacked, they must go on the run across Europe, try to figure out who is after them and maybe even learn to trust each other again so that they can finally have their unconventional happily ever after.

We’ve been talking about this story for many years, and now with John McNamara at the helm, we are ready,” Weatherly and de Pablo said in a joint statement. “The world of Tony and Ziva (and daughter Tali) promises to be an action-packed roller coaster fueled by love, danger, tears and laughter. We also want to acknowledge and thank the fans from around the world who supported the ‘Tiva’ movement for years. To this day, they say hello in grocery stores and on the street to tell us how much these characters mean to them and ask what Tony and Ziva are up to now. This is for you!

The NCIS spinoff is set to kick off production later this year and has been written by John McNamara, who will executive produce alongside Weatherly and De Pablo. “I’m incredibly excited to step into the NCIS universe with Cote and Michael and thrilled to explore it from a few new angles,” McNamara said. “Given that the franchise is such a global sensation, I think it’s phenomenal that CBS Studios and Paramount+ have given us the greenlight to shoot in Europe. As to the title of this series, if I told you what it is, I’d be violating the Espionage Act.

This isn’t the only new NCIS project in the works, as CBS Studios gave a straight-to-series order to NCIS: Origins earlier this year, a prequel series about young Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

Blue Harbor Entertainment has picked up the U.S. distribution rights to the horror thriller Trim Season, Variety reports, and they’re planning to give the film – which stars Alex Essoe of Starry Eyes, Midnight Mass, and The Pope’s Exorcist and Bex Taylor-Klaus of Hell Fest, The Killing, and the Scream TV series – a theatrical and VOD release sometime in June.

Directed by award-winning producer and production designer Ariel Vida, who made her feature directorial debut with the 2022 mystery thriller Vide Noir, Trim Season has the following synopsis: Emma, jobless and searching for purpose, joins a group of twenty-somethings from Los Angeles and heads up the coast to make quick cash trimming marijuana on a secluded farm in Northern California. Cut off from the rest of the world, they soon realize that the estate is harboring darker secrets than any of them could imagine, and it becomes a race against time for Emma and her friends to escape the dense woods with their lives. The screenplay for this one was crafted by Vida and David Blair, working from a story by Sean E. DeMott, Cullen Poythress, and Megan Sutherland.

Essoe and Taylor-Klaus are joined in the cast by Bethlehem Million (Sick, pictured below), Ally Ioannides (Into the Badlands), Jane Badler (V), Juliette Kenn De Balinthazy (Evil), Ryan Donowho (Beyond Paranormal), Cory Hart (Fear the Walking Dead), Paris Warner (Once I Was a Beehive), and Essoe’s Starry Eyes co-star Marc Senter.

Trim Season was produced by Aaron B. Koontz of Paper Street Pictures, Sean E. DeMott of Execution Style Entertainment, Paul Holbrook of Hlbrk Ent., and Badler, who produced through MeJane Productions. Leal Naim served as executive producer, with Cameron Burns co-producing.

Vida had this to say about the film’s distribution deal: “I’m thrilled that Blue Harbor is bringing this team’s work to audiences, whom I hope resonate with our film’s themes of power, agency, friendship, and loss — as well as the stylized lens through which we sought to paint both the horrifying and the heartrending.

Does Trim Season sound interesting to you? Let us know by leaving a comment below. This one has a solid cast, so I look forward to seeing what it’s like.

Tulsa King, Taylor Sheridan, Sylvester Stallone

After adding impressive viewership numbers to CBS‘s broadcast presentation of Yellowstone, Taylor Sheridan’s Tulsa King is making a similar move this summer. The acclaimed original Paramount+ drama Tulsa King, starring Sylvester Stallone, will air its first season on CBS ahead of its Season 2 premiere this fall exclusively on Paramount+.

The move to bring Tulsa King to CBS hails from Paramount Global. Like Yellowstone’s CBS screenings, Paramount hopes to rope more people into watching Tulsa King. The original crime drama plays exceptionally well with Paramount+ subscribers, and expanding to CBS should increase the show’s power and influence before Season 2. The goal is to whet viewers’ whistles with the first season and hopefully entice them to subscribe to Paramount+ for the second. Hey, it worked for Yellowstone.

“I think it just speaks to that the company is working across all different parts right now as much as possible, and we’re all looking for those wins together,” CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach told Deadline about expanding the reach of its original programming across other platforms.

Sylvester Stallone stars in Tulsa King as Dwight “The General” Manfredi, a New York mafia capo. After he’s released from prison, Dwight is unceremoniously exiled by his boss to set up shop in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Realizing that his mob family may not have his best interests in mind, Dwight slowly builds a crew from a group of unlikely characters to help him establish a new criminal empire in a place that might as well be another planet.

“Tulsa King scored as the #1 new series of the year, topping all others including the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, with its preview on Paramount Network, and on Paramount+, it shattered records, driving us to our biggest new sign-up day in history – which is why we instantly greenlit season two,” said Chris McCarthy, President/CEO, Paramount Media Networks & MTV Entertainment Studios in 2022 after Tulsa King’s outstanding launch. “Tulsa King together with Mayor of Kingstown, 1883 and the upcoming 1923, undeniably confirm the success of our strategy to franchise Yellowstone and use it to supercharge streaming growth – none of which would be possible without the creative mastermind of Taylor Sheridan.”

Does Tulsa King‘s move to CBS encourage you to check it out? Let us know in the comments section below.

A couple months ago, we learned that Alexander Skarsgard of SuccessionThe Legend of Tarzan, and The Northman had signed on to star in the ten-episode sci-fi series Murderbot, which is set up at Apple TV+. (Despite sharing a title with a recently released movie from Full Moon and director Jim Wynorski, this project is actually based on Martha Wells’ bestselling, Hugo and Nebula Award-winning book series The Murderbot Diaries.) Now Deadline reports that David Dastmalchian of The Suicide Squad, the Ant-Man series, and the upcoming horror film Late Night with the Devil is joining Skarsgard in the cast. Dastmalchian will be playing a character named Gurathin.

The sibling duo of Chris and Paul Weitz (About a Boy) are writing, directing, and executive producing Murderbot under their Depth of Field banner. Andrew Miano is also executive producing for Depth of Field, while David S. Goyer executive produces alongside Keith Levine for Phantom Four. Wells is on board as consulting producer.

Coming our way from Paramount Television Studios, Murderbot is aiming to be action-packed. The 10-episode series will introduce viewers to a self-hacking security android (Skarsgard) who is horrified by human emotion yet drawn to its vulnerable “clients.” Murderbot must hide its free will and complete a dangerous assignment when all it really wants is to be left alone to watch futuristic soap operas and figure out its place in the universe.

Wells’ The Murderbot Diaries series currently consists of seven novels and a few short stories. The novels have the following titles: All Systems RedArtificial ConditionRogue ProtocolExit StrategyNetwork EffectFugitive Telemetry, and System Collapse.

Does this Murderbot series sound interesting to you, and have you read any of The Murderbot Diaries? What do you think of Alexander Skarsgard and David Dastmalchian sharing the screen in a show about an android who takes dangerous assignments and likes to watch soap operas? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

David Dastmalchian is one of my favorite actors, so I count it as good news anytime I see his name come up in connection to a new project.

Paramount is polishing its crystal ball today and looking ahead at some of the films from the studio in the next few years. At least, that’s how it feels when Paramount earnings day comes along. The studio announced a 0.6% increase in stock today, with various release date announcements to whet investor’s whistles. Among the titles mentioned during today’s report, Paramount put dates on projects like Liam Neeson’s Naked Gun reboot, a sequel to 2023’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and more.

The Naked Gun reboot pratfalls into theaters on July 18, 2025, with Liam Neeson starring in the comedic role made famous by the late Leslie Neilsen. Akiva Schaffer directs, and executive produces the Naked Gun reboot, with Dan Gregor and Doug Man writing the script draft alongside Schaffer. One of the reasons this is exciting is that the trio partnered for the way-better-than-anticipated Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers film. If you’ve not seen the Rescue Rangers film, it’s like a spiritual successor to Who Framed Roger Rabbit and worth your attention. The Naked Gun films and Police Squad TV series inspire the Naked Gun reboot.

A sequel to 2023’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem arrives to shell-shock audiences in theaters on October 9, 2026, with Jeff Rowe returning to direct. While the sequel is years away, it’s important to remember that quality animation takes time, and since Mutant Mayhem was the best TMNT movie we’ve gotten since Secret of the Ooze, they should take their time.

PAW Patrol 3 woofs in theaters on July 31, 2026, from Spin Master and Nickelodeon Movies.

Elsewhere, the Robbie Williams original musical feature, Better Man, comes to theaters on Christmas Day, with an expanded release over MLK weekend on January 17, 2025. The project hails from The Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey, with the story inspired by Williams’s life and career.

Paramount looks to put Novocaine in theaters on March 14, 2025. The action-packed project comes from Robert Olsen and Dan Berk, with Jack Quaid and Amber Midthunder leading the cast. Described as a high-concept action film, Novocaine “follows a sheltered bank executive (Quaid) with a rare genetic condition that prevents him from feeling pain. When his bank is robbed and one of his co-workers (Midthunder) is kidnapped, he is forced to act and turn his greatest liability into his greatest strength.”

Finally, Vicious, starring Dakota Fanning, comes to cinemas on August 8, 2025. Bryan Bertino directs from his own script. Here’s the official logline: After a late-night visitor leaves her with a strange present, a young woman must spend the night fighting for her existence as she slips down a disturbing rabbit hole contained inside the gift.

What do you think about Paramount’s theatrical lineup? Are you curious about Liam Neeson’s Naked Gun remake? Can a comedy like that fly in today’s climate? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Neuromancer, Apple TV+, series

Apple TV+ is ready to expand its science-fiction content by decrypting an adaptation of William Gibson’s award-winning novel Neuromancer. The 10-episode series comes from creators Graham Roland (Tom Clancy’s Jack RyanDark Winds) and JD Dillard (DevotionThe OutsiderSleight), with Skydance Television and Anonymous Content co-producing, and production by Drake’s DreamCrew Entertainment. The project’s showrunner is Graham Rolland, with JD Dillard directing the pilot episode.

According to the project’s official synopsis, “The series will follow a damaged, top-rung super-hacker named Case who is thrust into a web of digital espionage and high stakes crime with his partner Molly, a razor-girl assassin with mirrored eyes, aiming to pull a heist on a corporate dynasty with untold secrets.”

For a more detailed description of the plot, here’s a synopsis of William Gibson’s award-winning novel:

Case was the sharpest data thief in the matrix—until he crossed the wrong people, and they crippled his nervous system, banishing him from cyberspace. Now a mysterious new employer has recruited him for a last-chance run at an unthinkably powerful artificial intelligence. With a dead man riding shotgun and Molly, a mirror-eyed street samurai, to watch his back, Case is ready for the adventure that upped the ante on an entire genre of fiction.

Neuromancer was the first fully realized glimpse of humankind’s digital future—a shocking vision that has challenged our assumptions about technology and ourselves, reinvented the way we speak and think, and forever altered the landscape of our imaginations.

Graham Roland and JD Dillard executive produce alongside David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Matt Thunell for Skydance Television; Anonymous Content; Drake, Adel’ Future’ Nur, and Jason Shrier for DreamCrew Entertainment; Zack Hayden and Gibson.

Beloved by science-fiction fans worldwide, Neuromancer is an awards powerhouse with a Nebula Award, Nebula Award, Philip K. Dick Award, and the Hugo Award worn as badges of literary excellence. Neuromancer is the first installment of Gibson’s Sprawl trilogy, with Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive completing the series.

Today’s announcement comes not long after the release of last year’s Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, the acclaimed expansion story for 2020’s Cyberpunk 2077 video game. Developed by CD Projekt RED, Phantom Liberty immerses players in a dystopian cyberpunk universe, with Keanu Reeves and Idris Elba as colorful and mysterious characters in the game.

Just over a year ago, the Peacock streaming service announced they were teaming up with genre filmmaker James Wan for a series adaptation of the 1988 bestseller Stinger, written by Robert R. McCammon (pick up a copy HERE) – and even at the time, it was clear that they wouldn’t be keeping the Stinger title, because the show was being referred to as the Untitled Ian McCulloch Project, since Yellowstone consulting producer Ian McCulloch was on board to write and executive produce the show. The project is now going by the title Teacup, and not only has Peacock given it a straight-to-series order (allowing it to bypass the usual pilot process), but Deadline reports that Yvonne Strahovski, whose credits include Chuck, The Predator, The Handmaid’s TaleStateless, Dexter, The Tomorrow War, and He’s Out There, has signed on to play the series regular role of Maggie Chenoweth. Strahovski will also be a producer on the show.

McCammon’s novel has the following description: The story takes place during a single twenty-four hour period in Inferno, Texas. Inferno is a town in trouble, driven to the brink by racial tension, gang violence, and a collapsing economy. But things can always get worse, and they do so with astonishing speed when an unidentified spacecraft crash lands in the desert outside of town, followed by a second craft bearing the alien being who will soon be known as Stinger. Stinger is a kind of interstellar hunter on a mission he intends to complete, whatever the cost. He brings with him an endless array of technological marvels and an infinite capacity for destruction that threaten the existence of Inferno, its inhabitants, and the larger world beyond.

Teacup will follow a disparate group of people in rural Georgia who must come together in the face of a mysterious threat to survive.

Wan is executive producing Teacup through his company Atomic Monster, alongside Michael Clear and Rob Hackett. As mentioned, McCulloch is also an executive producer on the show, as are McCammon, Francisca X. Hu, Kevin Tancharoen, and E.L. Katz, who will be directing the first episode. Danielle Bozzone is overseeing the project for Atomic Monster. The show is coming our way from UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group.

Have you read McCammon’s novel, and if so, what do you think of Stinger serving as the basis for a Peacock series? What do you think of the Teacup title, and the fact that Yvonne Strahovski will be playing a series regular? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

gunmen 1994

The other day, one of our writers sat down with Mario Van Peebles to talk about his upcoming spiritual sequel to Posse, Outlaw Posse. In the pretty awesome conversation, we asked Mario about what we consider a pretty underrated movie of his, Gunmen. This 1994 action flick paired him with Christopher Lambert, with an all-star cast that included Denis Leary as the film’s villain, Patrick Stewart, and nineties dream girl Brenda Bakke, as well as 90s rappers like Big Daddy Kane, Eric B, Rakim, Doctor Dre and Ed Lover – who all played themselves. It’s a tough movie to find these days, but Peebles had fond memories of what they were trying to accomplish with it.

Gunmen tips a hat to The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. My character, Christophe’s character, and the other character have a piece of the puzzle as to where the cachet of gold is. And we also have serious trust issues, but for good reasons…”

Indeed, Peebles is playing an Eastwood-esque figure (The Good) while Lambert is like the movie’s version of Eli Wallach (The Ugly), and Leary is definitely Lee Van Cleef (The Bad). Peebles mentioned that one of the best things about making that movie was the friendship he developed with Lambert, with the two getting along so well Peebles and him re-teamed immediately after for Highlander: The Final Dimension (which we just did a WTF episode about).

“Lambert was fun. We had a blast on that movie,” remembered Peebles. “And you can never understand him (laughs), the guy should have subtitles. I go to talk to him, ‘Chris what did you think’, and he goes  ‘Oui, tres, tres bien, we go over there Mario – you know what I’m saying! (Mario throws his hands up in confusion). No one knows what he said!”

Despite language issues, Peebles had nothing but love for his co-star. “But we had so much fun. We had this scene – we just made up stuff – there’s a scene where he’s trying to get the information on this gold, but he has me prisoner and we’re by this campfire at night. And my character’s asleep, and I’m chained up so he won’t let me free,” he remembers. “So I doze off and he’s trying to stay awake so he can talk to me because I’m sleep-talking. So I’m talking to him in my sleep, ‘the gold, the gold,’ so he comes right up to my face, ‘yes, yes, where is the gold’ and I start going, ‘Ooh baby, I’ll tell ya, just gimme a kiss,’ and he starts leaning in to kiss me, and I go, ‘you would have kissed me, you stupid son-of-a- (starts laughing) and we messed with each other. In life, we did that because we just clowned out and crazy stuff we did would come out, so it was a really fun time. We shot it down in Puerto Vallarta, and we just had a blast, man!”
