The X-Files, reboot, Chris Carter, Ryan Coogler

The X-Files creator Chris Carter revealed last year that Black Panther director Ryan Coogler was developing a reboot of the iconic series, but how involved will Carter be in this new take on his creation?

Chris Carter spoke with The Wrap at the opening of his art exhibit in Los Angeles over the weekend, where he revealed that he’s not involved with the X-Files reboot beyond giving it his blessing and acting as its cheerleader. “I wouldn’t [be involved],” Carter said. “Only as a cheerleader. They don’t need my blessing. 20th Century Fox and Disney owns the show. They are free to do with it what they believe. I’m honored that they came to me and asked me, not for my permission, but my blessing.

The X-Files creator said that he spoke with Ryan Coogler about the reboot but couldn’t spill any details. “I’m not supposed to be talking about it, according to Disney. But I’ll tell you, yes. I’ve had a conversation with him,” he said. “Yes, he likes to go with a diverse cast. And he’s got some good ideas.” Depending on your feelings towards Carter, knowing he won’t be creatively involved in the new project might be a good thing.

As for whether he would like to continue with his X-Files series, Carter said only if David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson would want to do it. While I doubt that we will ever see the classic X-Files team reunite, I think we’ve learned never to say never. Even Anderson, who famously said she was done with the character, did seem at least receptive to the idea of a return provided it was under new management. “[The X-Files] just feels like such an old idea. I’ve done it, I did it for so many years, and it also ended on such an unfortunate note (Scully’s pregnancy reveal),” Anderson said in 2022. “In order to even begin to have that conversation (about another season) there would need to be a whole new set of writers and the baton would need to be handed on for it to feel like it was new and progressive.

The X-Files remains one of my favourite TV shows of all time, and it’s one of the few I can return to again and again. While the idea of a reboot may seem sacrilegious to some, I am curious to see what Ryan Coogler can do with the concept. It’s a very different world than in 1993, so the time could be right for new mysteries, conspiracies, and monsters.

The horror comedy Lisa Frankenstein (you can read our review HERE), which came to us from director Zelda Williams (making her feature directorial debut) and screenwriter Diablo Cody, just reached theatres on February 9th… and it hasn’t exactly been a smash, drawing just $9 million at the domestic box office so far. Maybe now it will be able to draw in more viewers, as they’re going to have the chance to watch the movie in the comfort of their own homes: Universal Pictures has already given Lisa Frankenstein a digital release, and it’s available to watch through sites like Amazon.

Set in 1989, Lisa Frankenstein has the following synopsis: A coming of RAGE love story from acclaimed writer Diablo Cody about a misunderstood teenager and her high school crush, who happens to be a handsome corpse. After a set of playfully horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a murderous journey to find love, happiness… and a few missing body parts along the way.

Kathryn Newton (Freaky) and Cole Sprouse (Riverdale) have the lead roles and are joined in the cast by Carla Gugino (Gerald’s Game), Liza Soberano (Alone/Together), Joe Chrest (Stranger Things), and Henry Eikenberry (The Crowded Room). Newton is playing Lisa Frankenstein, Sprouse is the handsome Victorian corpse, and Chrest will be playing Lisa’s father Dale. Soberano’s character is named Taffy and Gugino is playing Janet.

Cody produced Lisa Frankenstein with Mason Novick. A press release notes that they have previously collaborated on films including Tully, Young Adult, Jennifer’s Body, and Juno, which earned Cody an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Jeff Lampert serves as executive producer, while Focus Features’ Vice President of Production and Development, Michelle Momplaisir, was the creative executive on the project. Focus Features will distribute the film in the United States, and Universal Pictures International is the international distributor. Filming took place in New Orleans.

Williams previously directed a horror comedy short called Kappa Kappa Die (which was scripted by Piranha 3D and Saw X writers Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg).

Drax, Dave Bautista, superhero

Dave Bautista’s transformation from a former wrestling superstar to a feature film powerhouse starring in some of Hollywood’s most significant blockbusters is incredible. While other stars on a similar path have stumbled, Bautista continues to boost his credibility with projects like Blade Runner 2049Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune series, to name a few. One of his more notable roles in recent years is for Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Dave Bautista plays Drax the Destroyer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. a role he’s retired after appearing in multiple films, ending with 2023’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Bautista says that while he’s no longer playing Drax, he’s open to playing more roles in superhero cinema. He’s simply waiting for the opportunity.

Speaking with Gizmodo, Bautista says he’s been in contact with Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige about starring in other projects. While Bautista is one of Marvel’s more recognizable stars, he’s covered from head to toe in makeup while playing Drax. If Marvel plays their cards right and makes him look different enough, Bautista could play another character in the MCU.

“When I said that I was done, I was really just done with my journey as Drax,” Bautista said. “I still have a relationship with Marvel. I’ve seen Kevin Feige again, Lou [D’Esposito] as recently as two weeks ago. And they know that I would be up for a role. I love the universe — the superhero universe, I love it. I’m a fan. So Marvel or DC, if they call, I would answer the phone. And if the role makes sense, I’d be all over it.”

“I just would like the opportunity to do a bigger role, a different role,” he continued. “Maybe a deeper role. I’d love to have the opportunity to play, like, an ominous villain in the superhero universe. … I’m not done with it. But my journey with Drax is over.”

Last year, Dave Bautista told GQ Magazine playing Drax wasn’t all roses and daffodils. The makeup process for the character was an undertaking, with hours spent each day to complete the look. While Bautista is incredibly grateful for his time as Drax, he doesn’t want the character to be his legacy. He wants to expand and be known for more than being the other big green guy in the MCU.

You can catch Dave Bautista in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, which is coming to theaters on March 1. Bautista plays Beast Rabban in the larger-than-life science-fiction spectacle alongside Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux, and Stellan Skarsgård. Reviews for Dune: Part Two continue to pour in, with our Editor-in-Chief, Chris Bumbray, giving the sequel a 10/10 in his official review.

Who should Dave Bautista play in another superhero movie or franchise? Let us know in the comments section below.

Producer Jason Blum had said the Paranormal Activity franchise went dormant for a while after the release of 2015’s Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension because he felt the series had gotten tired – and it wasn’t his idea to make Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, a failed attempt at a revival (that he described as “terrible”), back in 2021. He has been open about the fact that he feels there has been “enough already” when it comes to Paranormal Activity movies. But that doesn’t mean the franchise can’t continue in other ways. A few months back, we heard there’s a stage play in development, and now Variety has broken the news that a Paranormal Activity video game will be released in 2026!

A collaboration between Paramount Game Studios and DreadXP, the publisher of the hit horror game The Mortuary Assistant, the Paranormal Activity video game will “bring the franchise’s groundbreaking found-footage style to horror enthusiasts in surprising new ways, immersing them in a story that expands upon the lore and world of the films.” The game will be available across multiple platforms and will include “an advanced version of the Haunt System that will dynamically alter the types and intensity of scares players will encounter based on their actions.” Development is being headed up by DreadXP co-director and creative director Brian Clarke (DarkStone Digital), who was also the main developer on The Mortuary Assistant.

Epic Pictures CEO and DreadXP producer Patrick Ewald provided the following statement: “We are thrilled to work with Paramount Game Studios and to have the opportunity to bring the world of Paranormal Activity to gamers everywhere. The films are steeped in rich lore and creative scares, and under the stewardship of creative director Brian Clarke, DreadXP’s Paranormal Activity video game will honor those core tenets and offer horror fans one of our most terrifying games yet.

Clarke added: “The success of the Paranormal Activity franchise epitomizes the power and reach of the horror genre. If you thought The Mortuary Assistant was scary, we’re taking what we learned during the development of that title and cranking it up with a more reactive and horrifying haunting system. It’s going to be intense!

I can’t say the idea of a Paranormal Activity video game gets me as hyped as I was when I heard there was going to be a Friday the 13th, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, or Killer Klowns from Outer Space video game, but it could be interesting.

Would you play a Paranormal Activity video game? Let us know by leaving a comment.

Here’s a teaser for the game:

Coppola AMA

If you could sit down with Francis Ford Coppola – one of the greatest titans and entrepreneurs in movie history – what would you ask him? His best advice for a young filmmaker? His favorite movies? Perhaps his go-to ice cream flavor? Well, the director had all that and more to share during a recent Instagram AMA session; yes, Coppola has Instagram, and yes, you can ask him anything.

First and foremost, during the AMA, Coppola was asked what his favorite movies of his daughter Sofia’s were, in which he rattled off her debut, 1999’s Virgin Suicides, 2003’s Lost in Translation, 2006’s Marie Antoinette, and 2010’s Somewhere. That’s half of her filmography – Francis is such a dad! As for his own pictures, Coppola didn’t cite The Godfather or Apocalypse Now or Jack but rather 1983’s Rumble Fish, his second S.E. Hinton movie after The Outsiders (also out in ‘83). As for other directors’ works, he chose Eraserhead and The Elephant Man as his favorite of David Lynch’s.

Francis Ford Coppola also used his AMA time to give some advice on filmmaking, such as informing aspiring directors to do the research and write about what they love. Coppola is certainly taking his own advice, finally moving forward with his long-gestating passion project Megalopolis, which has a massive cast that includes Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jason Schwartzman, Dustin Hoffman, and so, so many more. Coppola even had thoughts on the casting process as a whole, saying, “I never make detailed notes, because the type of person who “sticks in your mind” has that unique ingredient, which also sticks in the audience’s mind.”

While Coppola didn’t appear to stick around all that long for his AMA session, it is pretty amazing to see the 84-year-old embracing social media and his fanbase (now, if we can just get him on Letterboxd). After all, how else would we know that the maestro loves him some pistachio ice cream?

Coppola hasn’t released a movie since 2011’s Twixt, only adding to the anticipation of Megalopolis. Coppola described the film as such: “It’s a love story…A woman is divided between loyalties to two men. But not only two men. Each man comes with a philosophical principle. One is her father who raised her, who taught her Latin on his lap and is devoted to a much more classical view of society, the Marcus Aurelius kind of view…The other one, who is the lover, is the enemy of the father but is dedicated to a much more progressive ‘Let’s leap into the future, let’s leap over all of this garbage that has contaminated humanity for 10,000 years. Let’s find what we really are, which are an enlightened, friendly, joyous species.’”

The Department, Michael Fassbender, George Clooney

The Killer and Prometheus star Michael Fassbender could go behind enemy lines for The Department, a forthcoming espionage thriller series with George Clooney (The Boys in the Boat) at the helm. With Clooney in the director’s chair, filming for The Department kicks off in London this spring. The project, which has a straight-to-series order by Showtime, is based on “The Bureau,” the hit French spy show created by Eric Rochant. In addition to his role as the project’s director, Clooney is producing alongside Grant Heslov’s Smokehouse Pictures, MTV Entertainment Studios, and 101 Studios.

The original French show starred the “bureau des légendes,” Matthieu Kassovitz as Guillaume Debailly — alias Paul Lefebvre, alias Malotru – a member of the “bureau des légendes,” the mythical powerhouse within the French Secret Service and its daredevil ghost agents. Malotru returns home after completing a six-year mission in Damascus. While struggling to retire his false identity and heated relationship with a Syrian woman, Malotru attempts to balance a double-agent game between the French Secret Services (DGSE) and the CIA.

Praised for exploring the psychology associated with covert agents and their ability to straddle double lives, The Bureau is known for keeping its finger on the pulse of geopolitical affairs, never shying away from hot-button topics or societal divides.

Michael Fassbender recently starred in David Fincher’s The Killer, focusing on an assassin who, after a near-miss, battles his employers and himself during an international manhunt. Tilda Swinton, Charles Parnell, Arliss Howard, and Kerry O’Malley star alongside Fassbender as primary cast members. After The Killer, Fassbender starred in Taika Waititi’s Next Goal Wins, telling the story of the infamously terrible American Samoa soccer team, known for a brutal 2001 FIFA match they lost 31-0.

According to IMDBKung Fury 2 is in post-production, but I’ll believe it when I see a trailer. The sequel, starring Michael Fassbender, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Alexandra Shipp, David Sandberg, David Hasselhoff, and more, focuses on Kung Fury’s universe with no real connection to the short movie other than the lead character.

What do you think about Michael Fassbender and George Clooney teaming up for The Department? Do you like it when Clooney directs, or would you rather see him in front of the camera? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, poster, Guy Ritchie

Creating eye-catching movie posters is an art. In the past, we’ve all seen some gnarly one-sheets that miss the mark due to formulaic layouts or studio interference. Thankfully, today’s new poster for The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (shown below) is on target, with cast members looking cool, dangerous, and ready for action. In the explosive poster, members of the film’s murder squad brandish weapons in preparation to punch holes in the enemy, and they’re not about to take any prisoners. The poster implies a fun, action-filled romp with Ritchie’s flare for ensemble dynamics.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, courtesy of Lionsgate:

Based upon recently declassified files of the British War Department and inspired by true events, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is an action-comedy that tells the story of the first-ever special forces organization formed during WWII by UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill and a small group of military officials including author Ian Fleming. The top-secret combat unit, composed of a motley crew of rogues and mavericks, goes on a daring mission against the Nazis using entirely unconventional and utterly “ungentlemanly” fighting techniques. Ultimately, their audacious approach changed the course of the war and laid the foundation for the British SAS and modern Black Ops warfare.

The all-star movie features Cavill as the head of a Dirty Dozen-like team that neutralizes German U-boats in the North Atlantic. The story is loosely based on a real special forces team from WWII, which, among its members, included James Bond creator Ian Fleming. Of course, being a Guy Ritchie movie produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, expect less intrigue and more firepower, with the trailer scored by Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” and having a body count already in the dozens.

Directed and co-written for the screen by Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes, The Gentlemen, Wrath of Man), and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer (Top Gun: Maverick, Pirates of the Caribbean, National Treasure), The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare stars Henry Cavill (Man of Steel, Mission: Impossible – Fallout), Eiza González (Baby Driver), Alan Ritchson (TV’s Reacher), Alex Pettyfer (In Time), Hero Fiennes Tiffin (After series), Babs Olusamokun (Dune), Henrique Zaga (Beyond the Universe), Til Schweiger (Inglourious Basterds), with Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians) and Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride).

Based on the book “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare: How Churchill’s Secret Warriors Set Europe Ablaze and Gave Birth to Modern Black Ops” by Damien Lewis, the film opens in theaters on April 19th.

A24 and We’re All Going to the World’s Fair director Jane Schoenbrun have teamed up for a new horror movie called I Saw the TV Glow, which JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to see at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (you can read his 5/10 review at THIS LINK). A24 hasn’t announced a release date for the film just yet, but they might be revealing their plans soon, as they have unveiled a poster for I Saw the TV Glow today, and along with the poster comes the promise that a trailer for the film will be making its way online tomorrow. So scroll down to the bottom of this article to take a look at the poster, then come back to JoBlo.com tomorrow to watch the trailer.

Written and directed by Schoenbrun, I Saw the TV Glow tells the story of two teenage outcasts who bond over their shared love of a scary television show. However, the boundary between TV and reality begins to blur after it is mysteriously canceled.

Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Dominion) and Brigette Lundy-Paine (Bill & Ted Face the Music) play the teenage outcasts and are joined in the cast by Helena Howard (The Wilds), Danielle Deadwyler (The Harder They Fall), Amber Benson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Ian Foreman (The Holiday Switch), Michael C. Maronna (The Adventures of Pete & Pete), Conner O’Malley (Palm Springs), Emma Portner (Ghostbusters: Afterlife), and Danny Tamberelli (also of The Adventures of Pete & Pete).

I Saw the TV Glow is being produced by Emma Stone through her company Fruit Tree, along with her Fruit Tree partners Dave McCary and Ali Herting. Sam Intili and Smudge Films’ Sarah Winshall are producing as well. A24 handled the financing and will also be handling the worldwide distribution.

Bumbray said in his review that the film is “so experimental that it feels like a half-baked attempt at a genre version of Inland Empire-era David Lynch.”

The post A24 unveils a poster for I Saw the TV Glow, trailer is coming tomorrow appeared first on JoBlo.

Last month, Doug Liman said he’s boycotting the upcoming SXSW premiere of his Road House remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal. In a statement, Liman said he was unhappy with Amazon’s decision to forgo a theatrical release and stream the film exclusively on Prime Video. Liman says he agreed to make a theatrical motion picture for MGM, but when Amazon bought MGM, the streaming giant told Liman, “Make a great film and we will see what happens” regarding its release. While Liman disapproves of MGM’s actions, Jake Gyllenhaal says “Amazon was always clear” about where the Road House remake would screen.

For context, here is Liman’sLiman’s statement concerning his plans to boycott the SXSW premiere:

“When Road House opens the SXSW film festival, I won’twon’t be attending. The movie is fantastic, maybe my best, and I’m sure it will bring the house down and possibly have the audience dancing in their seats during the end credits. But I will not be there,” Liman said. “My plan had been to silently protest Amazon’sAmazon’s decision to stream a movie so clearly made for the big screen. But Amazon is hurting way more than just me and my film. If I don’t speak up about Amazon, who will? So here we go.”

“Contrary to their public statements, Amazon has no interest in supporting cinemas,” Liman adds. “Amazon will exclusively stream Road House on Amazon Prime. Amazon asked me and the film community to trust them and their public statements about supporting cinemas, and then they turned around and are using Road House to sell plumbing fixtures.”

Since Liman’s comments, a report from Variety claims Liman and the film’s team, including Jake Gyllenhaal, were given options regarding the film’s release. They could accept $60 million for a theatrical release or $85 million for the Road House remake to go to Prime Video. The article says they opted to take the streaming deal.

Speaking with Total Film about Liman’s comments and decision to boycott the film’s SXSW premiere, Gyllenhaal said, “I adore Doug’s tenacity, and I think he is advocating for filmmakers, and film in the cinema, and theatrical releases. But, I mean, Amazon was always clear that it was streaming. I just want as many people to see it as possible. And I think we’re living in a world that’s changing in how we see and watch movies, and how they’re made. What’s clear to me, and what I loved so much, was [Liman’s] deep love for this movie, and his pride at how much he cares for it, how good he feels it is, and how much people should see it.”

Gyllenhaal also told the outlet that he loves seeing films at the cinema. However, he also says he’s watched movies on various platforms and has been profoundly moved by them, regardless of how the content is delivered. “I’m a deep lover of cinema and the theatrical release – but I also do really embrace the streaming world,” Gyllenhaal said.

What do you think about Gyllenhaal’s statement? Are you disappointed that Doug Liman’s Road House remake will not play in theaters? Does watching a film on streaming detract from the experience? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
