Some of you may not know this, but a few of us here on JoBlo have our roots in Montreal. I’m certainly one of them and one of the things I most remember about growing up in the city during the nineties was going to see baseball games at the Olympic stadium with my father on Friday nights. Indeed, I was always excited to see the Montreal Expos play, and for a lot of us, losing our baseball franchise was traumatic, with the team departing in 2004 to become the Washington Nationals.

Now, Netflix is green-lighting a documentary series about that infamous event, with the streamer making the announcement today. The series will be produced in Montreal by a local company called Attraction, which was signed recently to produce French-language docs for the streamer. It’s unknown if this will be done in French, English or – in true Montreal fashion – a mixture of both.

Netflix has been on a roll recently with sports docs, including Formula 1: Drive To Survive, Full Swing, NASCAR: Full Speed, Untold, Quarterback, Tour de France: Unchained, Under Pressure: The U.S. Women’s World Cup Team, Six Nations: Full Contact and more.

In the press release, Attraction president Richard Speer noted, “It is with great pride and enthusiasm that Attraction announces the first project to result from our partnership with Netflix. The Expos were the first MLB team outside of the US, and despite their departure from Montreal, they continue to have passionate fans to this day. This film will tell the story of the team through the eyes of those who lived it.”

Ironically, the Expos have recently come up in local news here in Montreal, with the city planning a controversial $870 million roof replacement on the Olympic Stadium. Folks in town are upset, wishing it would be demolished instead, although apparently, that would cost a stunning $2 billion to do, making the roof replacement more economically feasible, or so they say.

Anyone reading this remember the Expos? Let us know in the comments!

once upon a time in the west

Although collecting physical media doesn’t have the convenience appeal of streaming films, there is now sort of a stigma with purchasing movies through online platforms. Although its possible to compile a collection of movies through an online library, consumers will ultimately be at the whim of the service should it choose to keep the title available on their server. The seemingly iron-clad way to have a movie ready-to-watch is if you can have it at your fingertips. Additionally, there are a number of titles that don’t happen to find their way to have streaming access and physical media distributors like Shout and Vinegar Syndrome have dedicated their business to some overlooked titles.

There are also classic, prestige movie titles that studios are proud to remaster for a new, modern way of viewing. You can now catch a new upcoming release of Once Upon a Time in the West from legendary Italian director Sergio Leone from the specialty Paramount Presents label. Blu-ray.com has announced that Paramount Home Media Distribution is preparing a 4K Blu-ray release of the famous spaghetti western starring Charles Bronson, Claudia Cardinale, Henry Fonda, Jason Robards, and Gabriele Ferzetti. The release of this limited edition Blu-ray is scheduled to arrive on the market on May 14.

The synopsis reads, “One of the most iconic, and influential, movies ever made, Sergio Leone’s monumental epic comes to 4K Blu-ray. Set in the dying days of the Old West, a struggle to control water in a dusty desert town embroils three hard-bitten gunmen in an epic clash of greed, honor, and revenge.”

Blu-ray.com reveals that this definitive Paramount Presents limited edition includes both HDR10 and Dolby Vision, restored from the original camera negative by Paramount’s archive team, L’immagine Ritrovata and The Film Foundation. The site also gives special thanks to Martin Scorsese for his consultation on this restoration.

Bam Margera

Bam Margera may be moving out of his jackass phase, posting videos this week that showed he still has chops on the skateboard. At 44 and with far too many years of substance abuse to his name, Margera may not move as quickly as he once did, but it is awesome to see he can still work the deck.

Bam Margera posted two videos on Instagram this week, continuing a steady run of clips that have given fans promising updates on his health, both physically and mentally. And his followers have been extremely supportive, saying the videos remind them of Margera’s better days. Check out Margera’s moves below:

A staple of MTV’s Jackass, Bam Margera stood out in a stable of dudes that would do anything – and we do mean anything – for a laugh or to gross people out. While Margera undoubtedly had his outrageous moments, a lot of his antics revolved around his passion for skateboarding…and also harassing his parents on his namesake Viva La Bam.

But continued substance abuse – only escalating after the 2011 death of his close friend Ryan Dunn – pushed Bam Margera into a deeper tailspin that found him in numerous rehab stints, a custody battle and too many leaked videos of his erratic behavior in public. He, too, would have a major falling out with his Jackass pals, even being fired from 2022’s Jackass Forever, a situation that resulted in him filing a lawsuit against co-creators Johnny Knoxville, Jeff Tremaine and Spike Jonze.

Bam Margera has had some reconciliation within his former circle, however, appearing on Steve-O’s podcast to reveal that he was legally dead following a bout of “gnarly COVID.”

Despite his struggles, it does seem as if Bam Margera wants to focus on the positive; and while addiction never truly goes away, it appears he may be going in the right direction based on his social media posts as of late. They are most definitely a far cry from than last year’s comments that he would smoke crack until he died unless he was allowed to see his son…We here at JoBlo.com certainly hope Bam Margera continues to rebound from his issues and get his life back in order.

What do you hope Bam Margera does throughout his continued recovery? Do you want to see him in more mainstream projects? Share your thoughts below.

Mickey 17, Robert Pattinson, Bong Joon-ho, release date

Mickey 17, the upcoming project from Bong Joon-ho, has reportedly been moved to January of next year, marking a rather curious release date for such a high-profile project, especially considering it will be the long-awaited follow-up to the director’s Best Picture winner Parasite.

Originally, Mickey 17 was slated for a March 29th, 2024 release date but was moved back once it was announced last month that Warner Bros. – who is also distributing Mickey 17 – would be putting out Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire on that date. While a studio directly clashing with itself wouldn’t make sense, that Warner Bros. has moved the movie so far back definitely feels like cause for concern. Added to that, January is typically seen as a dumping ground for movies, a place to toss the leftovers that never had any awards potential to begin with.

The plot of Mickey 17: “Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous—even suicidal—the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal…and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.” In addition to Pattinson, Mickey 17 has a wealth of other talents on board, including Steven Yeun, Tony Collette, Naomi Ackie, and Mark Ruffalo.

Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite would be nominated for six Academy Awards, taking home four: the aforementioned top honor, Best Editing, Best International Feature, and Best Director, marking one of the few times an Asian filmmaker has taken home that trophy. But it’s extremely unlikely now that Bong Joon-ho will be headed to the Oscars again – not because we expect Mickey 17 to be a bad movie but because movies released in the first months of the year rarely have the legs to make it through awards season. Just for reference, Parasite premiered at May’s Cannes Film Festival, itself giving the movie a leg up as far as prestige.

With this release date shift, the gap between Parasite and Mickey 17 will be the largest between any Bong Joon-ho films, as it will be just under six years between the two.

Are you concerned for Mickey 17 over its new release date? Will you still catch it in theaters next year? Let us know below.

Robin Hood, Russell Crowe, broken legs

I’ve never broken a bone in my life. That said, it always struck me as something you would know when it happened, but apparently not. Russell Crowe revealed to People that he actually broke both his legs during a stunt on the set of Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood, but didn’t discover the extent of his injuries until a decade later.

I jumped off a castle portcullis onto rock-hard uneven ground,” Crowe said. “We should have prepped the ground and buried a pad but we were in a rush to get the shot done in the fading light.” As he jumped, Crowe said that he knew it was going to hurt before he landed heel-first on the ground below. “It was like an electric shock bursting up through my body,” he said. “We were shooting a big movie, so you just struggle through, but the last month of that job was very tricky. There was a number of weeks where even walking was a challenge.

Despite the pain, Russell Crowe didn’t tell anyone and just kept working on Robin Hood. It wasn’t until he began having some strange pains in his legs a decade later that he realized what had happened. After getting an MRI and X-rays, the doctor asked him when he had broken his legs. “Apparently he could see the remnants of fractures in both shin bones,” Crowe said. “To jog my memory he said, ‘Would have been maybe 10 years ago?’” Crowe added, “Apparently I finished that movie with two broken legs. All for art. No cast, no splints, no painkillers, just kept going to work and over time they healed themselves.

Russell Crowe can currently be seen starring alongside Liam Hemsworth in Land of Bad. When an Army ODA team is ambushed, their only hope lies with an Air Force JTAC (Hemsworth) and a drone pilot (Crowe) to guide them through a brutal 48-hour battle for survival. You can check out a review from our own Tyler Nichols right here, but it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Crowe seems to be the only highlight of the movie.

Gareth Edwards, Jurassic World

From Jedi to dinosaurs. Rogue One director Gareth Edwards has been tapped to helm the new Jurassic World movie after a deal couldn’t be reached with David Leitch.

The new Jurassic World movie will relaunch the franchise with a fresh take, which means that neither Chris Pratt nor Bryce Dallas Howard are expected to return. The original trilogy group consisting of Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill, and Laura Dern isn’t likely to be back either. However, there will be a blast from the past behind the scenes as original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp has signed on to pen the script. The new Jurassic World movie has already been slated for a July 2, 2025 release, which means that Gareth Edwards will likely be getting right to work before the ink has even dried.

Although Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Jurassic World: Dominion didn’t receive the best reviews upon release, they did quite well at the box office, earning $1.3 billion and $1 billion, respectively. Universal clearly believes that there’s plenty of juice left in the franchise.

Even before the release of Jurassic World: Dominion, franchise producer Frank Marshall was already keen on continuing the series. “[Dominion] is going to wrap up this [Jurassic World] trilogy, but we’re not resting on our laurels,” Marshall said. “We’re going to sit down, and we’re going to see what the future is. We have that wonderful series, Camp Cretaceous, on Netflix. We obviously want to make quality, good movies with great storytelling, great writers and directors, but we’re definitely looking to do more in the Jurassic world.

Gareth Edwards is hot off the release of The Creator, his first movie since Rogue One. The film starred John David Washington as an ex-special forces agent who is recruited to hunt down a mysterious creator who has developed a super weapon with the power to end a war between humanity and artificial intelligence. Our own Chris Bumbray was a fan, saying that it was “one of the better science-fiction movies to come along in the last few years and should elevate Edwards’ status as one of the best genre directors in the biz” in his review.

Are you down with Gareth Edwards directing the next Jurassic World movie?

Tony Ganios, dead, Porky's

Tony Ganios, best known for playing Anthony ‘Meat’ Tuperello in Porky’s, is dead at the age of 64. According to the actor’s fiancée Amanda, Tony was admitted to a hospital in New York on Saturday with a severe spinal cord infection but passed away of heart failure following surgery on Sunday.

The last words we said to each other were, ‘I love you,’” Amanda wrote on X. “Love is an understatement. You are everything to me. My heart, my soul and my best friend.

He made his feature-film debut in Philip Kaufman’s coming-of-age comedy-drama The Wanderers, which followed a group of Italian-American teenagers and their power struggles against rival gangs in the Bronx in 1963. The film was a success upon release, but its popularity grew over the decades as it developed a passionate following, even leading Warner Bros. to re-release the movie in 1996.

Ganios made a name for himself with Porky’s, one of the most influential teen sex comedies of the ’80s. He would reprise his role of Anthony ‘Meat’ Tuperello in the two sequels, Porky’s II: The Next Day and Porky’s Revenge. The success of the film came as a surprise to Gianos. “As ridiculous as this seems, it was difficult for me to shake the gnawing suspicion that our inveterate pranksters had somehow rigged the trade papers to reflect the film’s incredible box office figures,” Gianos said in a 2015 interview. “But this feeling quickly faded as excited fans began to waylay us on the street, shouting out our character names and reciting lines from the movie. It was a bit overwhelming, but I would be lying if I said we didn’t get a kick out of all the acclaim. It felt great to know we touched so many lives, and were part of something that made so many people happy.

He also made appearances in movies such as Back Roads, Continental Divide, Body Rock, and The Taking of Beverly Hills. He also made a memorable appearance in Die Hard 2 as Baker, one of Colonel Stuart’s mercenaries. After running into John McClane, he was killed with an icicle through the eye. Ganios made his final big-screen appearance in 1993 with a small role in Rising Sun, a buddy cop crime thriller starring Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes. On the small screen, Gianos popped up in Scarecrow and Mrs. King, The Equalizer, The Ring of the Musketeers, and five episodes of Wiseguys.

True Detective: Night Country, Nic Pizzolatto

Now that True Detective: Night Country has wrapped up its six-episode run, Nic Pizzolatto is taking another jab at the anthology series he created.

Following the season finale of True Detective: Night Country, Nic Pizzolatto chose to commemorate the occasion by sharing negative reactions from fans on Instagram. Those reactions called the latest season a “hot mess” that was “disrespectful and insulting” to Pizzolatto’s work. Night Country did make a few connections to the first season of True Detective, including a repeat of the “time is a flat circle” line, but that caused certain fans to accuse showrunner Issa López of butchering Pizzolatto’s dialogue.

In response to one fan who said that Pizzolatto probably couldn’t see how good the new season was due to being blinded by his horrible misogyny and massive ego, the True Detective creator said, “Of course, anyone who doesn’t like the show must be a misogynist. And have a small penis. And something something ‘muh patriachy’. Nobody cares about your opinion policing, you brain-broken misandrist.

Kali Reis, who stars in Night Country alongside Jodie Foster, responded to Pizzolatto’s comments on X: “That’s a damn shame…but hey I guess ‘if you don’t have anything good to share, shit on others’ is the new wave.

While Pizzolatto does have an executive producer credit on the new season, he wasn’t involved creatively. He had previously called the show’s connection to the first season “so stupid,” which prompted a response from López. “I believe that every storyteller has a very specific, peculiar, and unique relation to the stories they create, and whatever his reactions are, he’s entitled to them,” she said. “That’s his prerogative. I wrote this with profound love for the work he made and love for the people that loved it. And it is a reinvention, and it is different, and it’s done with the idea of sitting down around the fire, and [let’s] have some fun and have some feelings and have some thoughts. And anybody that wants to join is welcome.

All episodes of True Detective: Night Country are now streaming, and you can check out a review from our own Alex Maidy right here.

Martin Scorsese, Jesus Christ movie

Martin Scorsese recently spoke at the Berlin Film Festival, where he discussed his upcoming movie chronicling the life of Jesus Christ.

The Jesus Christ movie could be Martin Scorsese’s next project, but the director is still in the process of figuring it out. “I’m contemplating it right now,” Scorsese said. “What kind of film I’m not quite sure, but I want to make something unique and different that could be thought-provoking and I hope also entertaining. I’m not quite sure yet how to go about it.

Once the awards tour for Killers of the Flower Moon is behind him, Scorsese hopes to resume work on the project. “Maybe I’ll get some sleep and then wake up and I’ll have this fresh idea of how to do it,” he said. While it seems like there’s still a lot to do before the project moves forward, the film is expected to be based on Shūsaku Endō’s book A Life of Jesus, who also wrote the novel on which Silence was based.

Speaking of Silence, it was that film which put Scorsese in touch with Pope Francis, which sparked a desire to make another movie about Jesus. “That was viewed by the Vatican and so I met the Pope a couple of times based on that and at one point in a meeting he also talked about fresher ways of thinking about of Christianity, the essentials of it,” Scorsese said. “I’m always interested in that.

The last time Martin Scorsese tackled Jesus Christ, he was the focus of a large amount of outrage. The Last Temptation of Christ starred Willem Dafoe as Christ, who found himself struggling with various forms of temptation, including lust, fear, and doubt. As a result, it came under fire from Christian groups, who went so far as to claim the movie was blasphemy.

With this film, the director has previously said that he hopes to make religion a little more accessible. “I’m trying to find a new way to make it more accessible and take away the negative onus of what has been associated with organized religion,” Scorsese said. “Right now, ‘religion,’ you say that word and everyone is up in arms because it’s failed in so many ways. But that doesn’t mean necessarily that the initial impulse was wrong. Let’s get back. Let’s just think about it. You may reject it. But it might make a difference in how you live your life — even in rejecting it. Don’t dismiss it offhand. That’s all I’m talking about. And I’m saying that as a person who’s going to be 81 in a couple of days. You know what I’m saying?

We’ve been keeping an eye on the progress of writer/director Craig Rees’ film Goldilocks and the Three Bears: Death and Porridge, which puts a horror thriller twist on a classic children’s story, ever since it was first announced several months ago. We still don’t know of a release date for this one, but there is a positive update to share, as Variety has reported that international sales company Iuvit Media Sales has secured distribution deals for Goldilocks and the Three Bears: Death and Porridge in multiple territories while presenting it to potential buyers at the European Film Market. Buyers include Gussi Films for Latin America, Pioneer for the Philippines, and Front Row for the Middle East.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears: Death and Porridge has a short and simple synopsis: Never enter into someone’s house without permission. Variety has another synopsis: Goldilocks and the three bears live together in an isolated house in the woods. When a group of friends enter their home, Goldilocks, leader of the bears’ pack, decides to get rid of the intruders. Rees has compared the film to movies like The Strangers and The Purge.

Most of us already know the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. A young girl called Goldilocks wanders into a house in the woods, helps herself to some porridge, sits in the chairs, tries out the beds. Then the home’s inhabitants – a family of bears – get home and chase her away. As the Variety synopsis gives away, Death and Porridge switches things around by following a group of characters who settle into a home in the woods… then four people (three wearing bear masks, one wearing a Goldilocks mask) show up to give them grief.

Olha Solomakhina (To Happiness) stars as Goldilocks and is joined in the cast by Julian Amos (Get Millie Black), FlexSingh (Tough World), Jimmy Roberts (Once Upon a Time in Frickley), and newcomers Abigail Huxley and Susan Franks, with Robson Medler (In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats) as Daddy Bear, newcomer Jack Barry as Mama Bear, and special makeup effects artist Grace Darling Smith as Baby Bear.

Iuvit said that with this movie, “a growing suspense drives the audience from a contained thriller to an authentic slasher.” They attributed the fact that fairy tales are inspiring so many horror movies these days to directors like Rees seeing “the value of adapting these tales for horror fans, who are responding in numbers at the respective theatrical releases, to experience in full the slasher experience, with an honest and entertaining horror tale.

Are you interested in Goldilocks and the Three Bears: Death and Porridge, and are you glad to hear it’s securing distribution deals? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
