Dune: Part Two, Anya Taylor-Joy

Surprise! The rumors about Anya Taylor-Joy starring in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two are true! Earlier today, the Queen’s Gambit and Furiosa actor walked the red carpet at the anticipated sequel’s world premiere in London, England, confirming suspicions about her participation. Reports have not spoiled her character’s identity; we’ll do the same. We hear Taylor-Joy plays a significant role in the upcoming follow-up to Villeneuve’s 2022 science-fiction epic.

Holy sandworms! It’s as if the cast for Dune: Part Two couldn’t get any better, right? The sequel stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, Rebecca Ferguson as Jessica, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Dave Bautista as Beast Rabban, Christopher Walken as Emperor, Léa Seydoux as Lady Margot Fenring, Stellan Skarsgård as Baron Harkonen, and more, if you can believe that!

Denis Villeneuve directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jon Spaihts based on Frank Herbert’s novel. Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Villeneuve, Tanya Lapointe, and Patrick McCormick produce. The executive producers are Josh Grode, Herbert W. Gains, Jon Spaihts, Thomas Tull, Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, and Kim Herbert, with Kevin J. Anderson as a creative consultant.

It’s possible that Dune: Part Two will not be the end of the saga, as Villeneuve has teased a third movie based on Dune Messiah. “If I succeed in making a trilogy, that would be the dream,” Villeneuve said. “Dune Messiah was written in reaction to the fact that people perceived Paul Atreides as a hero…Which is not what he wanted to do. My adaptation [of Dune] is closer to his idea that it’s actually a warning.”

Dune: Part Two will “explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a path of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.” The film was supposed to have hit theaters last month, but WB pushed the release back to March 1, 2024.

Are you excited about Anya Taylor-Joy joining the cast of Dune: Part Two? Who do you think she plays in the film? Let’s see your predictions in the comments section below.

Sixteen years have passed since Spawn creator Todd McFarlane announced he was going to make sure a new Spawn movie was going to be made, even if he had to produce, direct, and finance it himself. Blumhouse Productions has been helping McFarlane develop the project since 2017, and even though he had written a script himself, they’ve also hired multiple screenwriters to do further work on the script, most recently the trio of Scott Silver (Joker), Malcolm Spellman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), and Matthew Mixom (Yesterday Was Everything). Jamie Foxx has been attached to play Spawn in the new film since 2018, with Jeremy Renner on board to play homicide detective Maximilian “Twitch” Williams III. JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols recently had the chance to talk to McFarlane, and while that EXCLUSIVE interview will be available to watch here on JoBlo.com soon, there is a bit of information we wanted to share before the full interview goes up: while talking to Tyler, McFarlane confirmed that Foxx and Renner are still attached to the Spawn reboot, and also said that he thinks the October release of the Joker sequel Joker: Folie a Deux will help Spawn get rolling.

About Foxx and Renner’s involvement, Renner said, “Until somebody says otherwise (they’re still attached). What ends up happening– again, Hollywood is in an interesting place that actors, writers, directors, producers, they all have schedules, and the windows of opportunities open and close and open and close, right? You’ve heard about it before. Plenty of people have projects and then other stuff comes along and something gets delayed and you just got to show your schedule. So until somebody tells me in my ear that these gentlemen are not involved for whatever reason, then I assume I haven’t heard otherwise. Nobody’s nobody’s talking to me about anybody being replaced.

As for how Joker: Folie a Deux could help Spawn; McFarlane believes that film will make studios more willing to take on R-rated movies based on comic books. Plus, it helps that Scott Silver is a writer on both of these projects. As McFarlane put it, “What does Scott [Silver] want to do next? And depending on whether we sold Spawn prior to that or we sell it the Monday after Joker 2 comes out, you know what we all want to do and Scott is attached to it and you guys are all wondering, right? It’s this thing called Spawn.

Blumhouse founder Jason Blum has said he’s hoping Spawn will be released sometime in 2025. A while back, we heard the movie might focus on Twitch after he loses his daughter to gang violence. He then begins his quest for revenge by enlisting the help of his ex-partner Danny to aid in his investigation of the criminal factions in New York. Twitch quickly realizes he’s in over his head as he learns that two of the largest organizations are teaming up to take over the criminal underworld of the city. That’s where Spawn comes in. Twitch is visited by Al, a mysterious man who has knowledge of his daughter’s death. It quickly becomes clear that Al is not who he appears to be as he reveals himself to be Spawn, a messenger from Hell who can aid Twitch in his search for justice. But that was several years ago, so the story could be completely different by this point.

Spawn previously received a feature film adaptation in 1997, but that movie didn’t go over very well. There was a well regarded animated series that ran for three seasons – and McFarlane has previously said he’s hoping to get some new animated Spawn projects off the ground.

Are you hoping to see the Spawn reboot make it into production soon? Are you glad to hear that Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner are still attached, and do you agree that Joker: Folie a Deux having a successful release could be beneficial for this project? HBO has released a new trailer and announced a premiere date for The Sympathizer, infiltrating the network’s Max streaming service on April 14. The limited series based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel looks like a must-watch event for spy thriller fans who enjoy infiltration with a comedic edge. Today’s The Sympathizer trailer is a hoot and a half. Try to spot all the incarnations of Robert Downey Jr. before the reveal at the end!

The series is an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his resulting exile in the United States. Hoa Xuande leads the series, with Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Vy Le, Alan Trong, Vy Le, Ky Duyen, and Sandra Oh. Robert Downey Jr. pops up in multiple roles, but could they all be the same character in disguise?

The series hails from Park Chan-wook, best known for the Vengeance Trilogy consisting of Sympathy for Mr. VengeanceOldboy, and Lady Vengeance. He serves as co-showrunner and co-writer of The Sympathizer alongside Don McKellar and also serves as executive producer and director of the first three episodes. Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, and Amanda Burrell executive produce through their Team Downey banner. Other executive producers include Kim Ly and Niv Fichman for Rhombus Media, Ron Schmidt, and Jisun Back for Moho Film, and author Viet Thanh Nguyen. Fernando Meirelles and Marc Munden directed the remaining episodes of the miniseries.

The Sympathizer premieres on Max on April 14, with the last episode of the seven-part series hitting on May 26.

What do you think about The Sympathizer trailer? Honestly, I only recognized Robert Downey Jr. once the credits listed his name at the end. I’d be ashamed if the effects team didn’t do such an incredible job transforming RDJ into multiple identities throughout the series. I’m adding this to my must-watch list for 2024, as I’ve been in the mood for a solid spy thriller. How about you? Will you watch The Sympathizer when it premieres in April on Max? The latest genre movie from Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, the directing duo behind the disturbing horror films Goodnight Mommy (the original, not the Naomi Watts remake) and The Lodge, is The Devil’s Bath, which is set to have its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival this month. Before the movie’s festival screening, Variety reports that the Shudder streaming service has already picked up the rights to release The Devil’s Bath in North America, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand sometime this summer. Variety also reports that Franz and Fiala have signed on to direct the psychological horror movie A Head Full of Ghosts, which is based on a novel by Paul Tremblay (you can pick up a copy of the book HERE). Another novel written by Tremblay was The Cabin at the End of the World, which M. Night Shyamalan turned into Knock at the Cabin.

The Devil’s Bath – which has been described as “utterly harrowing”, “chilling”, and “impactful” – is a German-language film that is set in 1750 Austria, at a time when villages were surrounded by deep forests. There, a deeply religious woman has married her beloved, but her mind and heart soon grow heavy as her life becomes a long list of chores and expectations. Day after day, she is increasingly trapped in a murky and lonely path leading to evil thoughts, until the possibility of committing a shocking act of violence seems like the only way out of her turmoil. Franz and Fiala said it’s “a movie that tackles the horrors of depression and aims to give a voice to women who have been unheard throughout history.”

Anja Plaschg, David Scheid, Maria Hofstätter, Camilla Schielin, and Lorenz Tröbinger star. The film was produced by Ulrich Seidl Productions, as a co-production with Heimatfilm and Coop99 Filmproduktion.

As for A Head Full of Ghosts, that one follows the Barretts, whose normal suburban New England life is torn apart when their teenage daughter shows signs of acute schizophrenia, reluctantly leading them to be the subjects of a reality show, “The Possession.” Some 15 years later, Merry faces her family’s haunting past when a journalist is assigned to help tell her side of the story and uncovers the very nature of evil.

Coming our way from Team Downey and The Allegiance Theater, with Fifth Season financing development and production, the Tremblay adaptation is being produced by Daniel Dubiecki and Lara Alameddine of The Allegiance Theater, Susan Downey and Robert Downey Jr. of Team Downey, and David Gambino.

A Head Full of Ghosts has been in development for years. Back in 2018, Osgood Perkins was attached to write and direct the film. In 2020, Scott Cooper came on board to direct and rewrite Perkins’ script, while Margaret Qualley was set to star in it. The producers are hoping the project will finally get into production later this year, with Franz and Fiala at the helm.

Are you glad to hear we have two new Franz and Fiala movies on the way? Share your thoughts on The Devil’s Bath and A Head Full of Ghosts by leaving a comment below.

The Paramount+ streaming service has unveiled a teaser trailer for season 4 of the supernatural drama series Evil – and while doing so, they have confirmed (via Deadline) that they have also cancelled the show. The fourth season of Evil will also be its last, and to make sure the showrunners will be able to properly wrap up the story, Paramount+ has ordered four bonus episodes that will be added to the new / final season. You can watch the teaser trailer in the embed above.

Evil season 4 will start streaming sometime in May.

Evil follows a skeptical female forensic psychologist who joins a priest-in-training and a blue-collar contractor as they investigate supposed miracles, demonic possessions, and other extraordinary occurrences to see if there’s a scientific explanation or if something truly supernatural is at work. The first season of the show originally aired on CBS, then it moved over to Paramount+.

The cast includes Katja Herbers, Mike Colter, Aasif Mandvi, Michael Emerson, Andrea Martin, Kurt Fuller, Christine Lahti, Brooklyn Shuck, Skylar Gray, Maddy Crocco, and Dalya Knapp.

Jeff Grossman, Executive Vice President, Programming, Paramount+ had this to say: “Robert and Michelle King created a unique and deeply entertaining way of exploring the intersection of religion and science. We thank Robert, Michelle and the immensely talented cast and crew of Evil and are incredibly proud of their collective work on the series. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for these characters, in what is sure to be a nail-biting, wild ride of a final season.

David Stapf, President of CBS Studios, added: “It’s hard to underscore the ability of Robert and Michelle King to cleverly craft thought-provoking stories that push creative boundaries time and time again, and Evil is no exception. We’re proud to call them partners, and want to thank them both, Liz Glotzer, the entire cast and the crew for bringing these complex characters to life year after year as we celebrate this final season of Evil.

Creators/showrunners/executive producers Robert and Michelle King provided the following statement: “We want to thank Paramount+ for giving us four bonus episodes to end Evil in the world in style. We will miss this show and cast. In many ways it was a dream project, but sadly evil will outlast Evil. See you in May.

We’ve been tracking the progress of Wyrmwood Road of the Dead and Wyrmwood: Apocalypse director Kiah Roache-Turner’s latest horror movie, the spider-themed Sting, since it was first announced, and we have a major update to share today: not only has Well Go USA confirmed that they’ll be bringing the Australian production to North American theatres on April 12th, but they’ve also unveiled a trailer for the film, which you can check out in the embed above, and a poster, which can be found at the bottom of this article.

Scripted by Roache-Turner, Sting has the following lengthy synopsis: One cold, stormy night in New York City, a mysterious object falls from the sky and smashes through the window of a rundown apartment building. It is an egg, and from this egg emerges a strange little spider… The creature is discovered by Charlotte, a rebellious 12-year-old girl obsessed with comic books. Despite her stepfather Ethan’s best efforts to connect with her through their comic book co-creation Fang Girl, Charlotte feels isolated. Her mother and Ethan are distracted by their new baby and are struggling to cope, leaving Charlotte to bond with the spider. Keeping it as a secret pet, she names it Sting. As Charlotte’s fascination with Sting increases, so does its size. Growing at a monstrous rate, Sting’s appetite for blood becomes insatiable. Neighbors’ pets start to go missing, and then the neighbors themselves. Soon Charlotte’s family and the eccentric characters of the building realize that they are all trapped, hunted by a ravenous supersized arachnid with a taste for human flesh… and Charlotte is the only one who knows how to stop it.

Despite the New York City setting, Sting was filmed in Sydney.

The film stars Ryan Corr (House of the Dragon), Alyla Browne (Three Thousand Years of Longing), Penelope Mitchell (Hellboy), Robyn Nevin (Top of the Lake), Noni Hazlehurst (The End), and Jermaine Fowler (Retreat).

Sting was produced by Jamie Hilton and Michael Pontin of See Pictures and Chris Brown of Pictures in Paradise. Funding was provided by create NSW, cumulous VFX, Spectrum Entertainment, Align, and Screen Australia.

Barbie Allan

Allan was one of the runaway characters in Barbie. Introduced by Mattel as a bit of a supporting character to a supporting character — he was first labeled as “Ken’s buddy” — Michael Cera’s interpretation of him proved to be a scene stealer. But could Allan be the one most deserving of a Barbie spin-off? Probably not, but there might be an audience for Cera standing around awkwardly for two hours.

Appearing on The Tonight Show, Cera was asked about Allan being the lead in a Barbie follow-up, to which he replied, “I think it would be kind of a weird movie, but I’m there…He’s kind of like an inactive character. He kind of just stands [there].” This tied directly into Cera’s inspiration for Allan, an unlikely source from Springfield. “For me, the biggest inspiration for the character was Hans Moleman, that character in The Simpsons. He just stands there all the time. For me, that’s like the core of the character.” Unfortunately, Allan doesn’t once get hit in the groin with a football.

Michael Cera wasn’t the first choice for Allan (it was actually Broadway star Jonathan Groff, who turned it down) and so feels even luckier to have been part of the Barbie ensemble. Cera is nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Recently announced was an equivalent Oscar category, which Barbie no doubt would have been a shoo-in to win.

Barbie cast members Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera and Kate McKinnon recently reprised their characters for an ad promoting next month’s Oscars, partly to react to the Greta Gerwig’s Best Director “snub”. Unfortunately, Allan was apparently back in the toy chest.

Allan might be too minor of a character to warrant a Barbie spin-off, but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t turn up in a sequel if one ever does happen. As of now, there has been no official word on one, with even star/producer Margot Robbie — who took in a reported $50 million from the movie — saying it would be unnecessary.

Would you welcome back Michael Cera’s Allan for another Barbie movie? Let us know in the comments section below.

John Wick Experience, Las Vegas, Lionsgate

Lionsgate is partnering with AREA15 to hit the Las Vegas Strip with another attraction that brings you closer to the studio’s films. What are they up to this time? Oh, just a little event called the John Wick Experience! You heard me! It’s time to get fitted for bulletproof attire, leave your pup with a friendly concierge, and take your seat at the High Table! John Wick mastermind Chad Stahelski and his 87Eleven Entertainment team are on the ground floor of the activation’s design, alongside Egan Productions for 12K square feet of space on the AREA15 campus.

The John Wick Experience welcomes guests through the Las Vegas Continental doors and into a world where bartenders serve death with chilled wine, and allegiances are as fragile as a Faberge egg. As a part of the experience, guests navigate an intense adventure and visit a themed bar and retail shop open to the public.

Each group of guests accepts distinctive missions related to the John Wick mythology, with many familiar elements from the billion-dollar-grossing film franchise. Missions include social elements like canoodling with Continental staff members, assassins, crime bosses, and other shady characters roaming the hallowed halls of the fabled hotel.

“It’s always gratifying to see people embrace your story and characters, whether on the big screen or with a fully immersive experience like this one,” said Stahelski about expanding the John Wick universe to an interactive experience. “The teams at Lionsgate, AREA15 and Egan really dive into this world, and I’m excited that fans will experience it live in Vegas.”

“One of the things I love about the John Wick franchise is the idea that there’s a whole world of alliances and vengeance hiding in plain sight – all converging within the worldwide locations of the Continental. This experience draws fans into that world like never before, and AREA15 is an ideal place for fans to live out the fantasy, action and danger portrayed in the films,” said Jenefer Brown, EVP & Head of Global Products and Experiences at Lionsgate.

The John Wick Experience joins Lionsgate’s other activations, including attractions for SawBlair Witch, and The Hunger Games. The latest addition to Lionsgate’s Vegas offerings is as close as you can get to feeling like you’re a part of the John Wick universe without getting arrested or hunted by your associates. Good luck!
