Henry Cavill, sex scenes, The Witcher

Sex scenes in movies and television have come under fire more often recently, and it turns out that you can count Henry Cavill among those who aren’t a fan of them.

Henry Cavill appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast alongside Argylle director Matthew Vaughn, where he admitted that he feels sex scenes should be left to our imaginations.

I don’t understand them, I’m not a fan,” Cavill said. “I think there are circumstances where a sex scene actually is beneficial to a movie, rather than just the audience, but I think sometimes they’re overused these days. It’s when you have a sense where you’re going, ‘Is this really necessary or is it just people with less clothing on?’ And that’s when you start to get more uncomfortable and you’re thinking, ‘There’s not a performance here, there’s not a piece which is going to carry through to the rest of the movie.’

Cavill noted that “sex scenes can be great in a movie and can really help with the storytelling,” but that “most of the time the human imagination is going to trump it. So it can be a little bit of a cop out if a TV show or a movie is just filled with gyrating bodies and you’re going, ‘Okay, but what is this doing for us apart from the idea of, ‘oh naked person, great.’

Henry Cavill can currently be seen starring in Argylle, which stars Bryce Dallas Howard as Elly Conway, a reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books — which center on secret agent Argylle (Cavill) and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate — begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past. Sam Rockwell also stars as Aiden, a cat-allergic spy who races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur. Argylle is now playing in theaters, so be sure to check out a review from our own Chris Bumbray right here.

Do you agree with Henry Cavill? Are sex scenes largely unnecessary in most movies and TV shows these days?

The Terror, season 3

It’s been five years since the last installment of The Terror, but season 3 is finally on the way.

AMC has ordered The Terror: Devil in Silver, a six-part series based on the novel written by Victor LaValle. The story follows Pepper, “a working-class moving man who, through a combination of bad luck and a bad temper, finds himself wrongfully committed to New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital – an institution filled with the people society would rather forget. There, he must contend with patients who work against him, doctors who harbor grim secrets and perhaps even the very devil himself. As Pepper navigates a hellscape where nothing is as it seems, he finds that the only path to freedom is to face down the entity that thrives on the suffering within New Hyde’s walls. But doing so might prove that the worst demons of all live inside him.

The first season of The Terror debuted in 2018 and dealt with two ships embarking on a perilous voyage into uncharted territory in the 1840s to discover the Northwest Passage. After becoming trapped in the ice, the frozen and isolated crew find themselves faced with treacherous conditions, limited resources, and a deadly unseen terror stalking them. The second season, The Terror: Infamy, was set during World War II and centered on a series of bizarre deaths that haunt a Japanese-American community.

Victor LaValle will write The Terror season 3 alongside Chris Cantwell (Halt and Catch Fire), with Karyn Kusama (Yellowjackets) directing the first two episodes and executive producing alongside LaValle, Cantwell, David Zucker, Alexandra Milchan, Guymon Casady, and Scott Lambert. AMC was considering a third season back in 2020, but I think fans believed the series was dead when they didn’t hear anything else.

The Terror anthology series has already delivered to fans two unforgettable seasons of storytelling that blend real-world events and characters with a terrifying and mysterious supernatural element,” said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks. “The Devil in Silver offers a perfect opportunity for a new installment of this popular and critically acclaimed anthology. We are looking forward to once again working with Chris Cantwell, who we partnered with so successfully on Halt and Catch Fire, Victor LaValle, Karyn Kusama and this great producing team to share our version of Victor’s heralded and disturbing novel.

Megalopolis, first look image, Francis Ford Coppola

Francis Ford Coppola has been hard at work on Megalopolis, his sci-fi epic that has been decades in the making. The director took to Instagram to unveil the first look at Megalopolis, which shows a dingy, rain-soaked alley with a collapsed statue in the center. The image features the title “Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis.”

It’s not much, but the first look at Megalopolis does potentially show that the project is on track to be released later this year. Plot details have largely been kept under wraps, but the film is said to center on an architect who seeks to rebuild New York City as a utopia after a disaster. The director did offer a few more details two years ago, but they’re fairly ambiguous.

It’s a love story…A woman is divided between loyalties to two men. But not only two men. Each man comes with a philosophical principle. One is her father who raised her, who taught her Latin on his lap and is devoted to a much more classical view of society, the Marcus Aurelius kind of view,” Coppola explained. “The other one, who is the lover, is the enemy of the father but is dedicated to a much more progressive ‘Let’s leap into the future, let’s leap over all of this garbage that has contaminated humanity for 10,000 years. Let’s find what we really are, which are an enlightened, friendly, joyous species.’

The film also boasts quite a star-studded ensemble cast, which features Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Giancarlo Esposito, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Chloe Fineman, Kathryn Hunter, Dustin Hoffman, DB Sweeney, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Bailey Ives, Grace Vanderwaal, and James Remar.

Francis Ford Coppola began writing Megalopolis in the 1980s but recognized that it would require a huge budget to match its massive scope, so it sat on a shelf for decades. Once production finally kicked off, there were reports that the budget had grown out of control, which Coppola denied. “I’ve never worked on a film where I was so happy with the cast,” Coppola said. “I am so happy with the look and that we are so on schedule. These reports never say who these sources are. To them, I say, ha, ha, just wait and see. Because this is a beautiful film and primarily so because the cast is so great. I’ve never enjoyed working with a cast who are so hardworking and so willing to go search for the unconventional, to come upon hidden solutions. It is a thrill to work with these actors and the photography is everything I could hope for. The dailies are great. So if we’re on schedule, and I love the actors and the look is great, I don’t know what anyone’s talking about here.

Afterburn, Dave Bautista, Samuel L. Jackson

Deadline reports that Dave Bautista will star in Afterburn alongside Samuel. L Jackson. The project is a sci-fi action movie based on the graphic novel series of the same name written by Scott Chitwood & Paul Ens and illustrated by Wayne Nichols.

Afterburn takes place in a post-apocalyptic world ten years after a solar flare has wiped out technology across the globe. Dave Bautista will play Jake, an ex-soldier who “works as a treasure hunter recovering valuable objects from the old world for powerful clients. His latest mission is to team up with freedom fighter Drea to recover the Mona Lisa before an unhinged warlord gets there first.” Samuel L. Jackson will play a freedom fighter by the name of Valentine. The film will be directed by J.J. Perry, who made his feature directorial debut with Day Shift, an action comedy starring Jamie Foxx, Dave Franco, and Snoop Dogg released on Netflix in 2022.

Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe will produce for Original Films, with Steve Richards also producing for Endurance Media and Dave Bautista through Dogbone Entertainment. The producers have been trying to get this project off the ground for the last six years.

Black Bear’s Josh Friedberg, who is handling international sales for the movie, added, “The combination of Dave Bautista and Sam Jackson in an epic adventure is a sure-fire proposition for the international marketplace” added Black Bear’s Friedberg, “With an action master like J.J. at the helm, and incredible producers in Steve, Neal and Toby, this is going to be a spectacular cinematic event.” Production is expected to kick off in April in Europe, so we should hear some more casting news soon.

Samuel L. Jackson was most recently seen in Argylle, which is now playing in theaters, while Dave Bautista will next be seen in Dune: Part Two, which is slated to hit theaters on March 1st.

Four years ago, actor Dave Franco made his feature directorial debut with the horror film The Rental, which happened to star his wife Alison Brie. Now Deadline reports that Franco and Brie are set to share the screen in the upcoming horror film Together, which they will also be producing, with first-time feature filmmaker Michael Shanks writing and directing.

Tango, Picturestart, and 30West are providing the financing, while Picturestart, Tango, 1.21, and Princess Pictures produce alongside Franco and Brie.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but Deadline was able to learn that Together is about “the horror of co-dependency, told in a unique way.” Of course, they’re not ready to tell us just how the film will be approaching this subject matter in a unique way.

Franco and Brie clearly love working together. In addition to The Rental, they’ve also co-starred in The Little Hours, The Disaster Artist (which was directed by Dave’s brother James Franco), and Horse Girl (which Brie co-wrote). Franco and Brie also collaborated on the screenplay for his second directorial effort, Somebody I Used to Know, which Brie starred in.

Since we don’t know much about Together yet, this is a good time to remind everyone that The Rental was a pretty solid horror movie. (You can read our review of that one HERE.) Written by Franco and Joe Swanberg, the film told the following story: Two couples looking to celebrate their seed money from a new business venture, embark on a weekend getaway to a seemingly perfect house they’ve booked online. But what begins as a festive weekend for the four close friends turns into something far more sinister as secrets they’ve kept from each other are exposed and paranoia grows that they may not be alone. Brie was joined in the cast by Jeremy Allen White, Toby Huss, Sheila Vand, and Dan Stevens.

I’m sure Together will be quite different from The Rental, but if it’s as good as The Rental, it’s something to look forward to.

How does Together sound to you? Are you a fan of Dave Franco and Alison Brie? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Gina Carano, Disney, Elon Musk, sue, The Mandalorian

Gina Carano is suing Disney and Lucasfilm for discrimination and wrongful termination in a lawsuit with X Owner Elon Musk funding the actress’s fight against both studios.

In a complaint filed on Tuesday in California federal court, Carano alleges she was fired for voicing right-wing opinions on social media and is seeking a court order to force Lucasfilm to recast her. Carano brings a powerful friend to her side with Elon Musk, who vowed to help fund legal actions for users of his social media platform who claim they’ve been discriminated against.

“As a sign of X Corp’s commitment to free speech, we’re proud to provide financial support for Gina Carano’s lawsuit, empowering her to seek vindication of her free speech rights on X and the ability to work without bullying, harassment, or discrimination,” said X’s head of business operations Joe Benarroch.

In 2021, Carano, who played Rebel shock trooper Cara Dune on The Mandalorian, was fired by Lucasfilm due to a series of controversial social media posts, including a comment implying that being a Republican is like being Jewish during the Holocaust. The comment was one of many to land Carano in hot water, such as the actress’s mocking of COVID-19 mask mandates and controversial comments surrounding the 2020 presidential election. Since being let go from the Star Wars spin-off, Carano was dropped by the UTA (United Talent Agency) and had her action figure canceled by Hasbro.

According to the complaint, Carano claims Disney and Lucasfilm harassed and defamed her for refusing to conform to their viewpoints regarding Black Lives Matter, an individual’s preferred use of pronouns, and other hot-button issues. Carano argues that the witchhunt against her is gender-related, saying her male co-stars did not receive the same punishment for making similar comments against right-wingers.

Carano seeks $75,000, plus punitive damages from Lucasfilm for wrongful discharge and sex discrimination.

“Some of us have been unjustly singled out, harassed, persecuted, and had our livelihoods stripped away because we dared to encourage conversation, ask questions, and refused to go along with the mob,” Carano said in a statement.

The 59-page filing details Carano’s complaints against the studios and her post-Star Wars journey of online harassment. As part of a recent incident, FAN EXPO Calgary announced Carano as a special guest at the fan-fueled con, to which many who had already bought tickets to the event demanded refunds because of her involvement.

Nine months ago, it was announced that Elisabeth Moss (The Invisible Man), Kate Hudson (Almost Famous), and Kaia Gerber (Babylon) had signed on to star in the “sexy psychological thriller” Shell, with Teen Spirit‘s Max Minghella directing from a screenplay written by Jack Stanley (Lou). Now production on Shell has just wrapped in Los Angeles, and along with the end of filming comes to the reveal that Moss, Hudson, and Gerber are joined in the cast by Arian Moayed (Succession), musician and composer Este Haim (Licorice Pizza), Lionel Boyce (The Bear), author/comedian Ziwe (ZIWE), Amy Landecker (Transparent), Peter MacNicol (Ally McBeal), Blake Lee (Cruel Summer), Dustin Milligan (Schitt’s Creek), Peri Gilpin (Frasier), and Mary Lynn Rajskub (24).

Shell is “set in a near future, when humanity’s cultural obsession with youth and beauty has been taken to new extremes“. Here’s the synopsis: Struggling actress Samantha (Elisabeth Moss) is given an opportunity to get a free trial at Shell, a pioneering health and beauty company which promises to keep its clients looking young forever. Samantha’s life and career is transformed by the treatment, and she develops a burgeoning friendship with Shell’s CEO, the ultra-glamorous Zoe Shannon (Kate Hudson). When a string of former Shell patients go missing under mysterious circumstances, including popular social media star Chloe Benson (Kaia Gerber), Samantha starts to fear she may be in danger herself.

Dark Castle Entertainment provided the financing for Shell. Elisabeth Moss and Lindsey McManus are producing Shell for Love & Squalor Pictures. Also producing the film are Range’s Fred Berger and Brian Kavanaugh, Blank Tape’s Max Minghella, Hal Sadoff and Norman Golightly of Dark Castle, and Alicia Van Couvering. Jamie Bell and Jack Stanley serve as executive producers. A press release informs us, “Black Bear is representing the international rights and will be distributing directly in the UK and Ireland. CAA Media Finance and WME Independent are co-repping the domestic rights.”

When the project was first announced, Minghella had this to say about it: “Shell packs a wildly entertaining genre movie with iconic characters and universal themes that are bound to have people talking long after they leave the theater. I’m so thrilled to be bringing it to life with this extraordinary cast and the incredible support of Black Bear International, Love & Squalor and Range.

Moss added: “This is one of the most unique, entertaining and special scripts I’ve ever read and I am so honored to be a part of it as an actor and flattered that Max came to me with this character, who’s unlike anyone I’ve ever played before. Having worked with Max for years on The Handmaid’s Tale, I’m so thrilled to now be directed by him as I’m a huge fan of his as a filmmaker. We at Love & Squalor are also excited to be working alongside Range and Black Bear, two companies we very much admire.

I haven’t seen Minghella’s feature directorial debut Teen Spirit, but the cast he has assembled for Shell is enough to sell me on his second feature. I look forward to seeing how this one has turned out.

Are you interested in Shell? What do you think of the cast Minghella brought together? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Deadline reports that a sci-fi action movie called Osiris has flown under the radar all the way through production – an impressive feat, given that it happens to star Max Martini (Pacific Rim), Brianna Hildebrand (Deadpool), LaMonica Garrett (1883), and Linda Hamilton (The Terminator). Apparently filming wrapped in New Orleans back at the end of last year. XYZ Films will be handling the worldwide distribution sales, and they have also unveiled a first look image, which you can check out at the bottom of this article.

Directed by William Kaufman (The Channel), who also wrote the screenplay with Paul Reichelt, Osiris tells the story of a team of Special Forces commandos who are in the middle of an operation when they’re abducted by a mysterious spacecraft. When they wake up aboard the ship, they quickly discover they are being hunted by a merciless alien race.

Martini is producing the film with Jon Wroblewski and Christian Sosa of Roosevelt Film Lab, as well as Andrew and Isaac Lewis of Denton Film. Reichelt serves as executive producer. The producers provided the following statement: “XYZ Films is the perfect partner who shares our sentiment for iconic alien thrillers much like we all grew up with, standing in line at the theaters to watch with state-of-the-art creature designs and visual effects that thrill audiences everywhere. We didn’t hold back our nostalgia for the genre, and teaming up again with Max Martini alongside the legendary Linda Hamilton was a huge gift for this movie. We can’t wait to show the world and wrap post-production this spring.

As Deadline points out, this is the first movie Linda Hamilton has worked on in the five years since the release of Terminator: Dark Fate. She has been working in TV since then, and next up for her is a role in the fifth and final season of the Netflix series Stranger Things, which is now filming.

Does Osiris sound interesting to you? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.

I was sold on this project as soon as I read that it was about these cast members being abducted by and having to battle aliens.

Wonder Man, Marvel Studios, Yahya Abdul Mateen II

An awful accident resulting in the death of a crew member has hit the production of the Marvel Studios series Wonder Man. According to Deadline, a rigger working at CBS Redford Studios fell off the rafters this morning and sadly passed away. The individual was not filming then, and an investigation is forthcoming.

A Marvel spokesperson for the Wonder Man production shared a statement on the studio’s behalf: “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family and friends, and our support is behind the investigation into the circumstances of this accident.”

Wonder Man stars Yahya Abdul Mateen II (AquamanCandyman) as Simon Williams, aka Wonder Man. Lauren Glazier (MindhunterGone GirlTales of the Walking Dead), Sir Ben Kingsley (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsIron Man 3), and Stella Meghie (The PhotographThe Weekend) also star.

Wonder Man is one of Marvel’s oldest characters, dating back to 1964 in the pages of Avengers #9. He began his comic book career as a villain but got reintroduced as a hero in the late 1970s. Wonder Man’s civilian name is Simon Williams, and he was a founding member of the Los Angeles-based West Coast Avengers. As an actor and stuntman, Williams’ look included wearing a turtleneck, a red jacket, and sunglasses. Wonder Man strongly relates to Marvel characters Vision and Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. The trio shared several adventures, with Wonder Man and Vision thinking of each other as brothers in action. After Vision was dismantled, the villain-turned-hero developed intense feelings for Wanda.

Marvel could take Wonder Man in several directions, given that he’s a relatively unknown character. Will they treat him like a brand-new hero or slide him into place alongside Wanda after the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness? Could it be Wonder Man who eventually frees Wanda from her self-inflicted incarceration? We’ll need to wait and see. According to Scarlet Witch actress Elizabeth Olsen, she’s enjoyed her time as the character but is looking to move on from Marvel. Could Marvel convince her to return for Wonder Man or some other superhero-related project? Your guess is as good as ours.

We want to express our condolences to the crew member’s family, friends, and co-workers. Please be careful as production for Wonder Man continues, and take care of one another.
