Kyle Chandler, Lanterns, HBO, Green Lantern

Just last month, Kyle Chandler was in talks to star in HBO’s Lanterns, and now it’s official. Meet your new Hal Jordan!

The live-action Green Lantern series is said to have a True Detective vibe as it “follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.” It was confirmed yesterday that Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) would also star as John Stewart. I’m excited about this one.

Chris Mundy (Ozark) will serve as showrunner and executive producer and will co-write the series alongside Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers) and Tom King (Supergirl), who will also executive produce. James Hawes, a prolific TV director best known for Black Mirror and Slow Horses, will helm the first two episodes.

Josh Brolin was originally in talks to play Hal Jordan, but he recently said it didn’t work out. “You know what? Green Lantern didn’t work out, but that’s okay,” Brolin said. “It’s working out. Who is it going to be, Kyle Chandler? I love him as an actor, I think he’s wonderful, actually. And, you know, we’ll see what’s down the line, man.

Lanterns was given an eight-episode straight-to-series order earlier this summer. Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content, said: “We are elated to be reuniting with both Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof as they partner with Tom for this fresh take on DC’s ‘Green Lantern.’ As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live action series will mark an exciting new era.

In a joint statement, James Gunn and Peter Safran, co-chairmen and co-CEOs of DC Studios, added: “We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm. John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and LANTERNS brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with ‘Superman.’

Now that it’s official, how do you feel about Kyle Chandler playing Hal Jordan in Lanterns?

Peacock has dropped the new trailer for The Day of the Jackal, a TV series based on Frederick Forsyth’s iconic spy novel of the same name.

The globe-trotting thriller stars Eddie Redmayne as an unrivalled and highly elusive assassin known only as the Jackal, who makes his living carrying out hits for the highest fee. But following his latest kill, he meets his match in a tenacious British intelligence officer (Lashana Lynch) who starts to track down the Jackal in a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase across Europe, leaving destruction in its wake.

In addition to Redmayne and Lynch, the series stars Úrsula Corberó (Snake Eyes), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Richard Dormer (Fortitude), Chukwudi Iwuji (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3), Lia Williams (The Crown), Khalid Abdalla (United 93), Eleanor Matsuura (The Walking Dead), and Jonjo O’Neill (Pennyworth). Ronan Bennett (Gunpowder) serves as writer and showrunner, with Brian Kirk (Game of Thrones) directing.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly last month, Redmayne said the series will give more insight into his character than the 1973 movie was able to. “One of the things that appealed to me about doing this series was, in Edward Fox’s version — it’s two hours, that movie — Edward is so filled with charisma… and kind of wit and elegance, but you never get to learn anything about it,” Redmayne said. “I wanted to see if through this 10-hour thing, we could get to know someone, but always be second guessing.” Redmayne added that the 1973 film was “one of those movies that my family would watch again and again and again.

And so I thought, wow, this is bold, that they’re going to try and reimagine this. And what I read, I just found completely thrilling and compelling, and at each moment it threw me off course and it kind of discombobulated me, but I couldn’t stop turning the pages,” Redmayne said. “I hadn’t done television for a few years, but the idea of getting to spend a proper amount of time with this enigma felt like great material to mine.

The first five episodes of The Day of the Jackal will premiere on Peacock on November 14th, followed by weekly episodes until the double-episode finale on December 12th. In the UK, the series will premiere on Sky on November 7th.

Kelly Ripa

Marie Still’s serial killer thriller novel My Darlings only just reached store shelves this week (you can pick up a copy at THIS LINK), but Milojo Productions – the company headed up by talk show host / actress Kelly Ripa and her co-host / actor husband Mark Consuelos – has already scooped up the TV series adaptation rights and got the project set up at Amazon MGM Studios.

Justin W. Lo and Leo Richardson of the Netflix series You are writing the adaptation and will serve as executive producers alongside Ripa, Consuelos, and Milojo Productions’ Albert Bianchini. James Griffiths is on board to direct and executive produce through his company Fee Fi Fo Films. Lindsay Maizel is a co-executive producer. Michael Halpern, vp production and development at Milojo, will be overseeing the project for the company.

Griffiths’ previous directing credits include episodes of The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, Stumptown, A Million Little Things, and Black-ish, among others.

My Darlings is described as being a satirical thriller. The story centers on Eloise Williams, an interior designer, doting wife and mother, and queen bee of her social circle — who is also a serial killer. When a mysterious blackmailer threatens to expose her past, murder becomes not just a desire, but a necessity.

Still’s novel has the following description: ABC’s Desperate Housewives meets HBO’s Dexter, My Darlings, a chilling suburban noir set in the deceptively serene Washington D.C. suburbs, where a respected philanthropist and PTO president’s secret life as a serial killer enthralls readers seeking a deep, psychological thrill.

No one was supposed to know. I’ve always been so careful. My Darlings, how did we get here? Evil lurks behind the perfectly manicured lawns, ornate iron gates, and long winding driveways of affluent DC–but not for long. Stay-at-home mom Eloise Williams is PTO president and a respected local philanthropist who sits on the boards of many distinguished charities. In addition to being a doting wife and mother, she is also a serial killer. But Eloise isn’t the only lady in society playing a part. As the hidden lives of Eloise’s inner circle are exposed, the body count rises. When stalkers becomes prey, Eloise desperately clings to control. Money and power can only buy influence and safety for so long. Eventually, the curtains lift, exposing the chilling reality hiding in plain sight. This dark thriller has numerous content warnings: child death, suicide, hazing, bullying, murder, infidelity, brutal slayings, domestic abuse/violence, child abuse, torture.

Still provided The Hollywood Reporter with the following statement: “I could not imagine a more talented team to bring Eloise, the serial killing mom, and her story to life. I’m thrilled to work with Leo Richardson, Justin W. Lo, Kelly Ripa, Mark Consuelos and the team at Milojo, and James Griffiths and the team at Fee Fi Fo Films, whose vision I’m confident will resonate with viewers and be utterly binge-worthy.

Bruce Campbell

When Sam Raimi signed on to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it was pretty much a given that he was going to give his longtime friend and Evil Dead franchise star Bruce Campbell a cameo somewhere in the film, just like he had Campbell appear in each one of the Spider-Man movies he directed. (Campbell was a ring announcer in the first Spider-Man, a theater usher in the second, and a maître d’ in the third). Sure enough, Campbell showed up in the Doctor Strange movie as a character called Pizza Poppa – and in interviews given since then, Campbell has stated that not only his Pizza Poppa a variant of his Spider-Man character(s), but he also has a future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

Over a year after the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Campbell told ComicBook.com, “The cameos are like, in the Spider-Man movies — if you know anything about the multiverse, you know now, retroactively, I’m in the multiverse now because of Doctor Strange. I’m not a pizza vendor, okay? That would be a massive mistake to think I’m just a pizza vendor, or an usher, or a ring announcer, or a maître d’. It’s called the multiverse, my friend. So, yes, he is the same character, but we don’t know who he really is. It has not been revealed yet. I just got off the phone with the guys at Marvel, and we’re getting close to finding out.Spider-Man: No Way Home did open portals in the multiverse that allowed the MCU’s Spider-Man (played by Tom Holland) to interact with Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man from the Amazing Spider-Man movies and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man from Raimi’s trilogy – and if Maguire’s Spidey is out there, so are (or so is) the Campbell character(s) he interacted with.

In a new interview with Variety, Campbell added, “I play the Pizza Poppa, but ask yourself: Really? In the Marvel timeline, I’m just a Pizza Poppa? Please don’t kid yourself. My contract is that thick for that movie. You think I’d sign a contract that thick for that simple little throwaway character? What did I do in that movie? I delayed Doctor Strange. I didn’t defeat him, we didn’t fight. I delayed him from what? Did I just save Doctor Strange’s life? The Marvel world really is just starting and, again, I can only comment so much.

Of course, Campbell is just kidding around about all of this, but it would be great to see him go on to play a more substantial role in the MCU somehow. And if Sam Raimi does come back for Doctor Strange 3, as is rumored, chances are good that Campbell will be showing up in that film as well. In the meantime, we’ll get to watch him on the Peacock series Hysteria!

Peacemaker, James Gunn, Season 2

Gather ’round the campfire, Peacemaker fans, and join me for a guessing game in which we will try to identify a new character coming to the second season of DC and Max‘s Peacemaker series. James Gunn took time out of his busy schedule on Wednesday to tease fans of the John Cena-led series with an image that’s as dark as it is mysterious. In the photo, a buff individual sits with their back turned to the camera, a blazing campfire illuminating their chiseled physique. The character’s braided grey hair dangles from their skull as feathers attached to their bulging biceps dance against a brisk wind. With little else to give us clues about their identity, the game is afoot, and Peacemaker Season 2 is closer than you think.

According to online detectives, many believe the character is Long Shadow, a former member of the Ultimen and an update to the Native American superhero Apache Chief from the Super Friends. Project Cadmus genetically engineered Long Shadow to serve the U.S. government, which is… yeah. Meanwhile, one Twitter user jokes the character could be Nightwolf, a character introduced in the Mortal Kombat 3 video game. Nightwolf feels unlikely, regardless of DC teaming up with Mortal Kombat for the fan-favorite DC vs. Mortal Kombat game franchise.

When James Gunn’s Superman production was in full swing, the DC Studios chief said he was working on scripts for Peacemaker Season 2 during downtime. According to Gunn, the show’s transition from the defunct DCEU to the shiny new DCU “won’t be confusing.” When asked why he didn’t make a different show to avoid bewilderment, Gunn said, “Because it’s my favorite thing to do, it’s the biggest original Max show ever, and I have a way in. It won’t be confusing.”

What do you make of today’s Peacemaker Season 2 tease? Is that Long Shadow roasting marshmallows in the middle of the woods, or does Gunn have another character up his sleeve? Although Gunn enjoys threading the needle when presenting the unexpected, Apache Chief and Long Shadow are controversial characters. Is Gunn willing to wade into those dark waters? We’ll keep our eyes peeled for confirmation about the character’s identity.

Anything for Jackson

Justin G. Dyck has almost 40 directing credits to his name, and most of those credits have been on TV movie romances with titles like Christmas Wedding Planning, Christmas with a View, A Very Country Wedding, and Art of Falling in Love… but recently, Dyck has been shifting gears. In 2020, he brought us the supernatural horror movie Anything for Jackson (pictured above), which was released through the Shudder streaming service. He went on to contribute to episodes of Shudder’s Creepshow series. Last month, we heard he will be directing the horror film The Casket Girls, starring Gabrielle Union. Now, Deadline reports that Dyck will be directing the haunted house movie William for Aperture Entertainment.

William is an adaptation of a novel by Andrew Pyper, which was written under the author’s sci-fi/thriller pen name Mason Coile. Pyper is writing the screenplay with Chris Sivertson, whose previous writing credits include The Image of You, Wicked Lake, Marauders, Sorority Sister Killer, and Margaux. Sivertson also directed The Lost, All Cheerleaders Die, I Know Who Killed Me, and Monstrous, among other films.

William is said to be a contained sci-fi horror film that blends the worlds of Ex Machina and The Amityville Horror, set in a timely haunted house story in which the haunting is AI. Here’s the book’s description: Henry is a brilliant engineer who, after untold hours spent in his home lab, has achieved the breakthrough of his career—he’s created an artificially intelligent consciousness. He calls the half-formed robot William. No one knows about William. Henry’s agoraphobia keeps him inside the house, and his fixation on his project keeps him up in the attic, away from everyone, including his pregnant wife, Lily. When Lily’s coworkers show up, wanting to finally meet Henry and see the new house—the smartest of smart homes—Henry decides to introduce them to William, and things go from strange to much worse. Soon Henry and Lily discover the security upgrades intended to keep danger out of the house are even better at locking it in.

Copies of the novel can be purchased at THIS LINK.

Alyssa Limperis

The sixth season of the FX series What We Do in the Shadows will also be the show’s last. The final batch of episodes are scheduled to start airing on October 21st at 10 p.m. ET/PT… and fans will have the chance to watch the first three episodes that night! The remaining eight episodes of the 11-episode season will be released on a weekly basis, and will be available to stream the next day on Hulu. They’ll be available to stream internationally on Disney+ at a later date. When the new episodes do air, viewers will be introduced to a new character: someone named Lisa, who “works in a corporate environment,” and today Deadline revealed that Lisa will be played by comedian Alyssa Limperis.

Limperis’ previous credits include Flatbush MisdemeanorsThe List, Aunty Donna’s House, and Too Late. She also voices multiple characters on the Cartoon Network show We Baby Bears. Deadline notes that she is best known for her viral mom videos and also has an hourlong comedy special about losing her dad called No Bad Days on Peacock.

A spin-off from Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s horror-comedy mockumentary film of the same title, What We Do in the Shadows centers on three vampires who live together: Laszlo (Matt Berry), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), and Nandor (Kayvan Novak) — the former two are husband and wife. Also living with them is a fourth vampire named Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), who’s an “energy vampire.” Instead of blood, he sucks the energy out of his victims by boring them to death with mundane anecdotes and bad jokes. The office is his feeding ground, but his powers also work on his vampire roomies.

Limperis joins a cast that includes Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou, Harvey Guillen, Mark Proksch, and Kristen Schaal.

Here’s the official synopsis for season 6: After a very brief stint as a full-blown vampire, Guillermo is re-evaluating his life. Who is he if not a familiar who will do anything to please his Master in hopes of one day being turned into a vampire? Meanwhile, the vampires are reevaluating, too. When their former roommate reappears after a 50-year nap, they realize how little they’ve done in half a century — not one goal accomplished, not one dream pursued, not one part of the New World conquered (except for their street and part of Ashley Street).

What We Do in the Shadows is executive produced by Taika Waititi, Jemaine Clement, Paul Simms, Scott Rudin, Eli Bush, and Garrett Basch.

Three years have gone by since it was announced that Edgar Wright was coming on board to direct a new take on the novel The Running Man, which was written by Stephen King under his Richard Bachman pen name. The Running Man was, of course, previously turned into a film back in 1987 that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and had little to do with the source material. Earlier this year, it was announced that Glen Powell of Top Gun: MaverickHit Man, and Twisters is following in the footsteps of Schwarzenegger to play the lead role in the new adaptation – and now we’re starting to hear the names of some of his co-stars. Last week, it was announced that Katy O’Brian, who had a breakthrough role in Love Lies Bleeding and shared the screen with Powell in Twisters, had signed on to play one of the contestants in the film. Now, Deadline has reported that Daniel Ezra, who played the character Spencer James on 106 episodes of the CW series All American, has also joined the cast. Details on his character were not revealed.

King’s novel has the following description: It was the ultimate death game in a nightmare future America. The year is 2025 and reality TV has grown to the point where people are willing to wager their lives for a chance at a billion-dollar jackpot. Ben Richards is desperate – he needs money to treat his daughter’s illness. His last chance is entering a game show called The Running Man where the goal is to avoid capture by Hunters who are employed to kill him. Surviving this month-long chase is another issue when everyone else on the planet is watching – and willing to turn him in for the reward.

During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast last year, Wright said he was drawn to The Running Man because, “I like the film but I like the book more, and they didn’t really adapt the book. Even as a teenager when I saw the Schwarzenegger film I was like, ‘Oh, this isn’t like the book at all!’ And I think, ‘Nobody’s [done] that book.’ So when that came up, I was thinking, and Simon Kinberg says, ‘Do you have any interest in The Running Man?’ I said, ‘You know what? I’ve often thought that that book is something crying out to be adapted.’ Now, that doesn’t mean that it’s easy! [Laughs] But it’s something that we are working on, yes.”

Wright is directing The Running Man from a script he co-wrote with Michael Bacall and is producing the film with Nira Park and Simon Kinberg.

Jinkies indeed! After two divisive seasons, Max won’t be renewing Mindy Kaling’s adult animated series Velma for another season. The show, starring Kaling as the voice of Velma Dinkley, lasted for two seasons before Max ripped off its mask, revealing a cancelation notice where a mustache-twirling villain’s head should be. The cancelation of Velma hits hard for fans of the series who genuinely enjoy Kaling’s unique spin on the Scooby gang and their darkly-themed misadventures.

“Over the past two seasons, Mindy [Kaling] and Charlie [Grandy] have created an incredibly fun and fresh world within the iconic whodunit franchise,” Max said in a statement. “While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we thank them for their compelling coming-of-age storytelling, unrivaled clues, and hilarious hijinks.”

Velma found the brainy Scooby-Doo character, striving to balance her detective work with her newfound popularity while surrounded by people who want her to fail. The show features members of Mystery Inc., including Fred (Glen Howerton), Daphne (Constance Wu), and Norville (Sam Richardson), with guest actors Jane Lynch, Wanda Sykes, Russell Peters, Melissa Fumero, Stephen Root, Gary Cole, Ken Leung, Cherry Jones, Frank Welker, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Fortune Feimster, Yvonne Orji, Sarayu Blue, Nicole Byer, Ming-Na Wen, Shay Mitchell, Debby Ryan, Kulap Vilaysak, and Karl-Anthony Towns.

Velma got off to a rocky start in January 2023 when a vocal contingency of viewers criticized the show’s changes to classic characters. In addition to confirming Velma’s liking for the ladies (which we always knew was the case), the show introduced Norville Rogers as a stand-in for the property’s lanky sandwich-stacking stoner, Shaggy Rogers. Despite the show’s effort to appeal to audiences outside those who grew up watching Scooby-Doo, Where Are You, Velma struggled to find dedicated viewers.

“It is a tremendous privilege to build on the 100-year plus legacy of ‘cartoons’ at this company. We can draw a straight line from our hundreds of childhood hours spent watching Bugs outwit Elmer to the current slate of adult animated projects we are building here at HBO Max and we think fans will agree,” Suzanna Makkos, the EVP of Original Comedy and Adult Animation, at HBO Max, said when the show launched in 2023.

“We are proud to introduce this distinctive group of series from a wide range of diverse creators that will form a first stop destination for animation lovers everywhere.”

Pour one out for Velma, friends. It was fun while it lasted.

Lanterns, Aaron Pierre, HBO, DC

Rebel Ridge star Aaron Pierre will go from a corrupt town in Louisiana to patrolling the cosmos for HBO‘s upcoming Green Lantern series, Lanterns. Pierre wields a power ring as John Stewart for the forthcoming series, a fan-favorite character many have waited with bated breath to see as a part of this ambitious project. Kyle Chandler is negotiating to play fellow Lantern Hal Jordan for the series, with insiders expecting the deal to close.

The search for an actor to play John Stewart has been epic. After an extensive search, the two frontrunners were Pierre and Stephen James (If Beale Street Could Talk, 12 Bridges). John Stewart is one of Earth’s Green Lanterns, the leader of the Green Lantern Corps, and a member of the organization’s Honor Guard. Stewart specializes in sharp-shooting and is a skilled architect, making the objects he manifests with his power ring intricate and multi-functioning.

Lanterns has officially been given an eight-episode straight-to-series order by HBO, Warner Bros. Television, and DC Studios. Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country) will serve as showrunner and executive producer and will co-write the series alongside Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers) and Tom King (Supergirl), who will also executive produce.

The series “follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.” Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, said, “We are elated to be reuniting with both Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof as they partner with Tom for this fresh take on DC’s Green Lantern. As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live-action series will mark an exciting new era.”

Aaron Pierre stars alongside Don Johnson and AnnaSophia Robb in 2024’s Rebel Ridge, a one-person-army drama about a former Marine grappling with a web of small-town corruption while attempting to post bail for his cousin. The ordeal escalates into a violent standoff with the local police chief.

The wait to find out who’s playing John Stewart for Lanterns is finally over! How do you feel about Aaron Pierre joining the show as John Stewart? Let us know in the comments section below.
