The Night Agent, season 3, renewed, Netflix

If you’re a fan of The Night Agent, you’ll be pleased to know that the Netflix action-thriller series has received a very early season 3 renewal. However, there is some bad news. The second season, which was originally slated to be released this year, has been pushed back to winter 2025. That will make the gap between seasons almost two years. Quite the wait.

Thankfully, fans won’t have to wait as long for The Night Agent season 3. Production is aiming to kick off in Istanbul by the end of the year, followed by a New York shoot in 2025. Based on the novel by Matthew Quirk, The Night Agent is “a sophisticated, character-based, action-thriller centering on a low level FBI Agent who works in the basement of the White House, manning a phone that never rings — until the night that it does, propelling him into a fast moving and dangerous conspiracy that ultimately leads all the way to the Oval Office.” The series stars Gabriel Basso, Luciane Buchanan, Hong Chau, D.B. Woodside, Eve Harlow, Sarah Desjardins, and more.

Netflix also dropped a few first-look images for The Night Agent season 2, which you can check out below.

The first season of The Night Agent was hugely popular upon release, with 98.2M views in its first 91 days. It currently occupies the #7 spot on Netflix’s Top 10 Most Popular (English) TV Shows of all time, standing alongside Netflix heavyweights such as Stranger Things, Bridgerton, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, and Wednesday.

While many obviously people tuned in for the first season of The Night Agent, our own Alex Maidy wasn’t a fan. “Despite solid chemistry from the leads and a couple of surprising supporting performances, The Night Agent is a ploddingly dull series that fails to capitalize on the talented actors on screen by placing them into a predictable and overlong origin story that could have worked better as a feature film,” wrote Maidy in his review of the series. Here’s hoping he finds the second season to be an improvement.

Are you looking forward to season 2 (and season 3) of The Night Agent?

Jonathan Pryce

The hit Paramount Network series Yellowstone will soon be coming to an end, and while Kelly Reilly is expected to reprise the role of Beth Dutton on the follow-up series that’s now going by the title The Madison, she’s also making some time to star in the Sky Original crime thriller series Under Salt Marsh, which is expected to start filming later this year. Today, The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Reilly is being joined in the cast by Rafe Spall (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), Jonathan Pryce (Tomorrow Never Dies), Naomi Yang (Nightsleeper), Harry Lawtey (Joker: Folie à Deux), Dinita Gohil (Sandman), Brian Gleeson (Phantom Thread), Kimberley Nixon (Fresh Meat), Mark Stanley (Happy Valley), Dino Fetscher (Fool Me Once), Lizzie Annis (The Witcher: Blood Origin), Rhodri Meilir (Tree on a Hill), and Julian Lewis Jones (House of the Dragon).

Written, created, and executive produced by Claire Oakley (Make Up), who will also direct the series, Under Salt Marsh is set in the fictional Welsh town of Morfa Halen, a tight-knit community nestled between mountains and a fast-encroaching sea that threatens its very existence. As a once-in-a-generation storm begins to gather far out at sea, former detective turned teacher Jackie Ellis (Reilly) discovers the body of her eight-year-old pupil, Cefin, seemingly drowned. The discovery sends shockwaves through the community, reviving the ghost of an unsolved cold case that rocked the town three years prior — the disappearance of Jackie’s niece, Nessa, which cost her career. Cefin’s death summons Jackie’s former partner, Detective Eric Bull (Spall), back to Morfa Halen to lead the investigation into a community he failed once before. Convinced the cases are linked, Jackie and Eric must reconcile to uncover long-buried secrets inside Morfa, before the storm breaks and all the evidence is gone for good.

Oakley previously provided the following statement: “Under Salt Marsh is a crime thriller set in a community deeply connected to its environment, and interwoven with the heartache, fears, dreams and secrets of its people. At the heart of it all is Jackie, a character who embodies the wildness of the place we’re depicting. She’s free-spirited, compassionate, and determined, with a steely resolve that makes her truly of the land. We’re absolutely thrilled to have Kelly Reilly bringing Jackie to life.

The series is being produced by Little Door Productions, in association with Sky Studios. Oakley wrote the scripts alongside Jonathan Harbottle and Nikita Lalwani. Oakley is also the lead director, with Mary Nighy on board to direct the third and fourth episodes. The Hollywood Reporter informs us that Under Salt Marsh will be available on Sky and the streaming service Now in the U.K., Ireland, and Italy. NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution will handle the international sales.

Elwen Rowlands, executive producer and CEO, Little Door, had this to say: “We are incredibly fortunate to have such a talented cast bringing these characters to life, Claire’s compelling scripts tell a thrilling story of a community deeply connected with its environment, raw with emotion, and beautifully mirrored by the stunning backdrop of North Wales where the story unfolds.

In a fast-moving, ever-evolving world plagued by struggles and sensationalism, it’s easy to forget the sacrifices made by people belonging to an older generation. Many young people have no appreciation for the trauma endured by soldiers of near-forgotten wars. They are too busy stunting for likes and subscribers while desperately craving the approval of strangers who could care less. However, those who fought for freedom remember the deafening bomb blasts, burying friends far too soon, and what the word honor truly represents. In Samuel Goldwyn Films‘s The Last Rifleman trailer, Pierce Brosnan plays a WWII veteran determined to return to Ireland on the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings, but does he still have what it takes to make the journey?

Terry Loane (Agatha and the Truth of Murder, Mille Inbetween, Just Johnny) directs The Last Rifleman from a screenplay by Kevin Fitzpatrick (The Last Letter). Inspired by a true story, Brosnan plays Artie Crawford, a World War II veteran living in a care home in Northern Ireland who has just lost his wife. On the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings, he decides to escape his care home and embarks on a journey to France to pay his final respects.

The Last Rifleman, trailer, Pierce Brosnan

Pierce Brosnan (Mrs. Doubtfire, The World Is Not Enough, Die Another Day) leads The Last Rifleman, which also stars Clémence Poésy, John Amos, Ian McElhinney, and Desmond Eastwood. Katy Jackson and John Leslie produce it from Wee Buns (Zoo). It is co-produced by Jacqueline Kerrin and Dominic Wright from Ripple World Pictures (Never Grow Old). Mark Huffam (The Martian), Kevin Jackson (Zoo), Nick Leese, Eloise Singer (Rare Beasts), and Tommy Curran are executive producing.

“We’re thrilled to bring this heartwarming and poignant story of a war veteran to audiences in the U.S. We’re confident this crowd-pleasing true story will have universal appeal across the whole country.” said SGF president Peter Goldwyn.

The Last Rifleman trailer presents Pierce Brosnan in a truly transformative performance as the near-93-year-old war veteran Private Artie Crawford. Artie’s inspirational journey highlights the fortitude of those who have served, their sense of duty, and their respect for their fallen brethren. The Last Rifleman arrives in theaters, Digital, and On Demand on November 8th.

Companion Drew Hancock Sophie Thatcher

Earlier this week, New Line Cinema unveiled a teaser trailer for the sci-fi thriller Companion, which is coming our way from writer/director Drew Hancock and the team behind the 2022 horror hit Barbarian. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Hancock has signed on to write and direct a supernatural horror film called My Wife and I Bought a Ranch for Amazon MGM Studios.

My Wife and I Bought a Ranch is based on a short story by Matt Query that first appeared on Reddit. Working with his brother Harrison, Query later expanded the story to novel length, and the novel was published with the title Old Country. Hancock’s adaptation will follow a couple who move into their dream home in Idaho only to discover that a malevolent spirit inhabits their valley. This is the second time we’ve heard of a Query novel adaptation this year, as Pet Sematary: Bloodlines director Lindsey Anderson Beer is producing a film based on their book Wilderness Reform, which is set up at Paramount.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that the My Wife and I Bought a Ranch adaptation was once set up at the Netflix streaming service (they picked up the rights back in 2021), but “has renewed energy now that Amazon and Hancock are involved.” Producers on this project include 21 Laps, which is run by Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, and Dan Levine, as well as James Wan and Michael Clear of Atomic Monster. Scott Glassgold of Ground Control is also producing.

Hancock’s previous writing credits include episodes of Supah Ninjas, Blue Mountain State, Fred: The Show, Suburgatory, Faking It, Mr. Pickles, and My Dead Ex (which he co-created), as well as the movie Fred 3: Camp Fred. While he never directed a movie before Companion, he has directed episodes of Acceptable TV and Jimmy Kimmel Live!, as well as a Tenacious D music video.

While we wait to see how My Wife and I Bought a Ranch is going to turn out, we’ll have the chance to see what Hancock did with Companion when the movie reaches theatres on January 10th.

Squaring off against criminals in any situation is harrowing enough without adding an armored car and a narrow bridge. The environment is a significant part of the strategic means to potentially violent ends, and Sylvester Stallone did not come to play in Lionsgate‘s Armor trailer.

Justin Routt (The Test, CIA MIAMI) directs Armor from a screenplay by Adrian Speckert and Corey Todd Hughes. Academy Award nominee Sylvester Stallone and Jason Patric star in Routt’s action-packed thriller about the lengths one man will go to save what’s left of his family and reclaim his own life. James and his son Casey are armored truck drivers tasked with delivering a suspicious package. After a violent ambush on the road, James and Casey become trapped until they discover the value of what they have been carrying and join forces to outgun and outwit their attackers.

Armor stars Sylvester Stallone (Tulsa King, Demolition Man, Cobra), Jason Patric (The Lost Boys, The Losers, Speed 2: Cruise Control), Dash Mihok (Ray Donovan, The Thin Red Line, Romeo + Juliet), Josh Wiggins (Giant Little Ones, Walking Out, Mean Dreams), Blake Shields (Heroes, The Hollow, Boys and Girls), Erin Ownbey (Atlanta, Echo, Panhandle).

Lionsgate’s Armor trailer starts innocently enough: a father and son drive an armored car with secretive and precious cargo. With the world’s weight resting on their shoulders, the familial duo attempts to steal the transport’s mysterious cargo. Unfortunately for them, Stallone and his crew of lethal protectors are willing to raise hell if it means recovering the truck’s contents. The situation becomes a moral dilemma as Stallone and his team strategize about the conflict, knowing it could all end in disaster and lives lost. Can the team infiltrate the truck without harming the family members inside? Will Stallone sympathize with the duo and let them walk away, their pockets filled with gold coins? Once the team breaches the truck and guns go silent, the outcomes will stop piling up.

Armor arrives in theaters, Digital, and On Demand on November 22, 2024. What do you think about today’s Armor trailer? Do you believe Stallone will let the father and son duo slide after such a violent confrontation? Let us know in the comments section below.

PLOT: Hellboy and a rookie B.P.R.D. agent in the 1950s are sent to the Appalachians, where they discover a remote community dominated by witches and led by the sinister local demon, the Crooked Man.

REVIEW: The Hellboy series has struggled ever since its inception. It was never financial dynamite for the studio, despite its clear fanbase. So now filmmakers are taking a different approach. Hellboy: The Crooked Man is much more in line with the graphic novels from Mike Mignola than anything we’ve seen before. He’s more of a paranormal detective with the scope being much more street-level. There are still fantastical creatures to fight, but it’s more location shooting and less crazy action set pieces. This is certainly not the Guillermo Del Toro movies, which went for a more large-scale, fantastical world. And it really worked for me!

Having low expectations can often help a movie out and I’m not sure my expectations could be lower after that first trailer. But the film itself really managed to appeal to the indie horror fan in me. Hellboy: The Crooked Man follows Hellboy and his team from the BRPD as they head to the Appalachians. It’s the 1950’s and they find a community of witches, with the mysterious Crooked Man at the forefront. I think most need to go into this with the proper expectations as this is a slow burn. Unlike the other which go further into the action, this leans heavily on folk horror. I watch a lot of indie horror, so I felt properly prepared for the structure at play. But those expecting large action beats and jokes will be disappointed.

Jack Kesy is pretty good as Hellboy. He has that trademark sardonic dry wit and annoyance with the world around him. Unlike the trailers that had a fanfilm look to them, he fits in well with the world here. The makeup grew on me, mostly because his performance just nails the Hellboy spirit. Most of the other characters are pretty bland, with no one really getting a chance to stand out. They are simply pawns in the story between Hellboy and the Crooked Man. A little more characterization would have gone a long way. I couldn’t tell you the name of anyone outside of our hero and villain. I definitely was missing Abe Sapien and Liz.

The Crooked Man takes advantage of the gothic horror aesthetic, complete with large spiders, decrepit buildings, and cemeteries. There are some really cool gags like a witch returning to her body and repopulating her skin, all in-camera. The CGI certainly isn’t Hollywood blockbuster level but it’s completely competent. There are some larger-than-life visuals and mostly shoots around its limitations. The filmmakers do a good job of setting up the Crooked Man as a force to be reckoned with. His presence is felt long before he appears on camera. He’s framed by other characters as evil incarnate and he’s properly creepy. Once we meet him, he falls into more generic territory.

When I think of writer/director Brian Taylor, I think of the high-octane action of the Crank franchise or the utter insanity of Mom and Dad. But he dials things back here, focusing on interesting shots that feel straight out of a comic panel. And despite the low budget, the sets never feel cheap. Everything feels very old and lived in. I was constantly impressed with the beautifully creepy visuals on display. The R Rating is pretty well utilized with some eye gouges, squished heads, and some swear words. But I definitely could have used more.

To be sure, The Crooked Man is going to have a steep hill to climb with general audiences. This is a very different style than the one fans of the Del Toro films will be used to. While it doesn’t entirely come together with some shoddy acting and some cringy dialogue, the gothic horror and atmosphere is fantastic. Despite the simple story, I really enjoyed my time with this. I think you have to go into it with the right mindset because this is very much an indie horror film and not an action blockbuster. Watching it overwhelmed me with the same sense of dread I had when reading the graphic novels. I really appreciated the low-budget approach and think they stretched the dollar well. While I doubt we’ll see more, I’m appreciative that we finally got this version of the character on the screen.

Interstellar, Christopher Nolan, IMAX, anniversary

One of Christopher Nolan’s most enigmatic films, Interstellar, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, and Paramount Pictures is marking the momentous occasion with limited screenings in IMAX cinemas this December. The exclusive limited engagement of Interstellar blasts off on December 6, 2024, with tickets going on sale on November 7. In addition, a Collector’s Edition 4K Ultra HD set will arrive on December 10, 2024.

In Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, a team of pioneers undertakes the most important mission in human history—to discover whether mankind has a future among the stars. Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey stars as the ex-pilot turned farmer who is forced to leave his family and a foundering Earth behind to lead an expedition traveling beyond this galaxy.

Known as one of the headiest dramas in science-fiction cinema, Interstellar distorts time and space to deliver a heartfelt story about family, connections through time, and unbreakable familial bonds. Nolan’s cerebral epic earned $730 million worldwide and five Oscar nominations, with a win for Best Visual Effects. The film features an extraordinary cast, including Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon, John Lithgow, Michael Caine, Timothée Chalamet, Ellen Burstyn, Bill Irwin, Wes Bentley, David Oyelowo, Casey Affleck, and more.

Paramount shared details about Interstellar’s 10th Anniversary Collector’s Edition on Tuesday, saying, “This must-own, limited-edition set includes the iconic film on both 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Disc, as well as a third Blu-ray with more than two hours of new and legacy bonus content that delves into the science of the film, its groundbreaking production, and a brand-new discussion of the film’s impact ten years later. The set also includes access to a Digital copy of the film, reproductions of five costume patches, five theatrical poster reproductions, and a never-before-seen storyboard sequence from the director’s archives.”

Prey Amber Midthunder

The first season of Legendary’s MonsterVerse TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters ran on Apple TV+ from November into January (you can read our own Alex Maidy’s review of the first batch of episodes HERE), and now the showrunners are moving ahead on a season 2 that’s aiming to be bigger and better. Today, the first bit of major news about the new season has dropped online, as Variety has revealed that Amber Midthunder of the Predator movie Prey has been cast in a heavily recurring role! Midthunder will be playing a character named Isabel, who is described as being “an intelligent and powerful businesswoman.”

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is the latest chapter in Legendary Entertainment’s MonsterVerse series, which currently consists of Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. KongGodzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and the Netflix animated series Skull Island.

The ten episode first season was set after “the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking revelation that monsters are real” (as seen in Godzilla 2014). It tracks two siblings following in their father’s footsteps to uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch. Clues lead them into the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw, taking place in the 1950s and half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows. The dramatic saga – spanning three generations – reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives.

The cast includes Anna Sawai, Kurt Russell, Wyatt Russell, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett, and Elisa Lasowski.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters comes our way from Legendary Television. Matt Shakman (WandaVision) directed the first two episodes. Black, Fraction, and Shakman executive produce the series with Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell from Safehouse Pictures, as well as Andy Goddard, Brad Van Arragon, and Andrew Colville. Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita executive produce on behalf of Toho Co., Ltd., the owner of the Godzilla character.

The Housemaid, Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, Paul Feig

After playing a dangerous lottery game with John Cena and Awkwafina for the action comedy Jackpot!, Paul Feig could tackle the upcoming Lionsgate feature The Housemaid, starring Sydney Sweeney (Anyone But You, Madame Web) and Amanda Seyfried (Mean Girls, The Crowded Room) about family secrets coming to light. Sweeney and Seyfried are in final negotiations to join the Hidden Pictures/Feigco Entertainment thriller written by Rebecca Sonnenshine, based on the bestselling novel by Freida McFadden.

In addition to their starring roles, Sweeney and Seyfried executive produce alongside Alex Young and McFadden. Hidden Pictures’ Todd Lieberman will produce.

Here is the official logline for The Housemaid courtesy of Lionsgate:

In the film, Sweeney will play Millie, a struggling young woman who is relieved to get a fresh start as a housemaid to Nina (Seyfried) and Andrew, an upscale, wealthy couple… but soon learns that the family’s secrets are far more dangerous than her own.

“I’m thrilled to have The Housemaid join our upcoming slate. A great filmmaker and a great cast with a great script from a great book is a terrific place to start. My prior work experiences with Paul and Amanda have been nothing short of spectacular, and Sydney is as talented and compelling as can be,” said Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.

Erin Westerman, co-president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, added, “The Housemaid is a certified phenomenon with over a year on the New York Times Bestsellers list, millions of copies sold, and a place on numerous critics’ choice lists. Part of the fun of the book was imagining the cast while we read it, and Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried are perfect for Millie and Nina – they’re both mysterious, nuanced, and incredibly skilled at becoming characters who don’t reveal everything right away. We’re thrilled to team them with Paul Feig, who we worked with on A Simple Favor and its upcoming sequel, and has a proven track record of developing stories with dynamic female leads.”

Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried approach The Housemaid after two significant wins for their outstanding careers. Sweeney revitalized the romantic comedy genre with her 2023 film Anyone But You, starring Sweeney and Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick, Twisters) as a combative couple trying to pose as lovers. Meanwhile, Seyfried won an Emmy for her show-stopping role as Elizabeth Holmes in the Hulu medical drama The Dropout.

The Housemaid should provide Sweeney and Seyfried with lots of space to strut their acting chops, as dark secrets tend to bring out the worst in those who try to keep skeletons in closets.

We’ve seen vampires take many different forms over the years. We’ve got the more classic monster types and the more seductive, sexy types. As a big Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan, I’ve always liked a combination of both. Based on the 2010 novel of the same name, The Radleys follows a family in Britain as they try to hide the fact that they’re vampires. And I use the term vampire loosely because, while they may feature similar attributes, there are nearly just as many traits given to the vampires that don’t exactly fit the lore. I’m not sure I can ever jive with that style but those less into the horror side of things may get a kick out of it. While I loved some of the performances, the movie didn’t entirely land with me.

I talked to star Damian Lewis about his role(s) in The Radleys. See, Damian plays twin vampires and they could not be more different. Peter is more levelheaded and boring, making the decision to not drink blood anymore for his family. But his twin Will is absolutely diabolical. So I had fun picking Damian’s brain about playing the two characters. As expected, there seemed to be a slight favorability towards evil Will. He was also sure to praise his co-star Kelly Macdonald who is great as wife, Helen. Check out the interview above!

THE RADLEYS plot synopsis:

Award-winning actors Kelly Macdonald (No Country For Old Men) and Damian Lewis (“Billions,” Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood) star in a dark comedy- thriller about a seemingly average suburban family with a juicy secret: they are vampires. In the light of day, the Radleys might seem normal, but they can only abstain from their natural cravings for so long until the bloody truth bubbles to the surface and turns their quiet country life upside down.

THE RADLEYS will be in Theaters, On Digital and On Demand October 4, 2024.
